  • The power output of solar panels highly depends on environmental situations like weather and air pollution. Due to bad weather or air pollution, it is difficult for solar panels to operate at their full potential. Knowing the power output of solar panels in advance helps set up the solar panels correctly and work their possible potential. This paper presents an approach to predict the power output of solar panels based on weather and air pollution features using machine learning methods. We create machine learning models with three kinds set of features, such as weather, air pollution, and weather and air pollution. Our datasets are collected from the area of Seoul, South Korea, between 2017 and 2019. The experimental results show that the weather and air pollution features can be efficient factors to predict the power output of solar panels.

  • Solar panels are modules made up of many cells, like the N-type monosilicon, P-type monosilicon, P-type multisilicon, amorphous thin-film silicon, and CIGS solar cells. An efficient photovoltaic (PV) power is important to use to determine what kind of cell types are used because residential solar systems receive attention. In this study, we used 3-type solar panels - such as N-type monosilicon, P-type monosilicon, and CIGS solar cells - to investigate what kind of solar panel on a house or building performs the best. PV systems were composed of 3-type solar panels on the roof with each ~1.8 kW nominal power. N-type monosilicon solar panel resulted in the best power generation when monitored. Capacity Utilization Factor (CUF) and Performance Ratio (PR) of the N-type Si solar panel were 14.6% and 75% respectively. In comparison, N-type monosilicon and CIGS solar panels showed higher performance in power generation than P-type monosilicon solar power with increasing solar irradiance.

  • Wind tunnel pressure tests were conducted on a 1:100 scale model of a large industrial building with solar panels mounted parallel to the flat roof. The model form was chosen to have the same aspect ratio as the Texas Tech University test building. Pressures were simultaneously measured on the roof, and on the topside and underside of the solar panel, the latter two combining to produce a nett panel pressure. For the configurations tested, varying both the lateral spacing between the panels and the height of the panels above the roof surface had little influence on the measured pressures, except at the leading edge. The orientation of the panels with respect to the wind flow and the proximity of the panels to the leading edge had a greater effect on the measured pressure distributions. The pressure coefficients are compared against the results for the roof with no panels attached. The model results with no panels attached agreed well with full-scale results from the Texas Tech test building.

  • This paper describes an investigation of the net wind loads on solar panels and wind loads on the underlying roof surface for panels mounted parallel to pitched roofs of domestic buildings. Typical solar panel array configurations were studied in a wind tunnel and the aerodynamic shape factors on the panels were put in a form appropriate for the Australian/New Zealand Wind Actions Standard AS/NZS 1170.2:2011. The results can also be used to obtain more refined design data on individual panels within an array. They also suggest values for the aerodynamic shape factors on the roof surface under the panels, based on a gust wind speed at roof height, of ${\pm}0.5$ for wind blowing parallel to the ridge, and ${\pm}0.6$ for wind blowing perpendicular to the ridge. The net loads on solar arrays in the middle portion of the roof are larger than those on the same portion of the roof without any solar panels, thus resulting in increased loads on the underlying roof structure.

  • Solar power is being spotlighted recently as a new energy source due to environmental problems and applications of solar power to curved structures are increasing. Solar panels installed on curved surfaces have different efficiencies depending on its position and the efficient positioning of solar panels plays a critical role in the design of solar power generation systems. In this study, the changing characteristics of solar irradiance were analyzed for hemispherical dome with a large curvature and the positioning of solar panels that can efficiently utilize solar energy was investigated. With an icosahedron-based hemispherical dome consisting of triangular elements as target model, a program for calculating solar irradiance using a normal vector of the solar module on each face was developed. Furthermore, the change of solar irradiance according to the sun's path was analyzed by time and season, and its effects on shades were also examined. From the analysis results, the effective positioning could be determined on the basis of the efficiency of the solar panels installed on the dome surfaces on solar irradiance.

  • Satellites with flexible lightweight solar panels are sensitive to vibration that is caused by internal actuators such as reaction or momentum wheels which are used to control the attitude of the satellite. Any infinitesimal amount of unbalance in the reaction wheels rotors will impose a harmonic excitation which may interact with the solar panels structure. Therefore, quenching the solar panel's vibration is of a practical importance. In the present work, the panels are modeled as laminated composite beam using first-order shear deformation laminated plate theory which accounts for rotational inertia as well as shear deformation effects. The vibration suppression is achieved by bonding patches of piezoelectric material with suitable dimensions at selected locations along the panel. These patches are actuated by driving control voltages. The governing equations for the system are formulated and the dynamic Green's functions are used to present an exact yet simple solution for the problem. A guide lines is proposed for determining the values of the driving voltage in order to suppress the induced vibration.

  • This study aimed to investigate the feasibility and potential applications of utilizing bifacial photovoltaic (PV) panels from an architectural perspective. It also aimed to establish a foundational dataset for installation and operational guidelines for bifacial PV panels through a comparative analysis of energy production performance with single PV panels. The research encompassed several key steps, including a comprehensive literature review, calculation of solar surface radiation values, development of datasets for bifacial and single PV energy production, and a performance comparison between both approaches. The results of the study show that bifacial PV panels exhibit optimized energy production capabilities within the range of 40 to 80 degrees, contingent upon the specific installation location. Consequently, it is recommended that the installation of bifacial PV panels in Korea should primarily focus on southwest-to-west orientation. Furthermore, it was concluded that bifacial PV panels could contribute an equivalent or even superior level of energy production compared to single PV panels, even if their performance exhibited a marginally lower efficiency of 2% to 5% with an 18% power generation efficiency.

  • The angle of solar panels is calculated using solar radiation model for the efficient solar power generation. In ideal state, the time of maximum solar radiation is represented from 12:08 to 12:40 during a year at Gangneung and it save rage time is12:23. The maximum solar radiation is 1012$W/m^2$ and 708$W/m^2$ inc lear sky and cloudy sky, respectively. Solar radiation is more sensitive to North-South (N-S) slope angle than East-West (E-W) azimuth angle. Daily solar radiation on optimum angle of solar panel is higher than that on horizontal surface except for 90 days during summer. In order to apply to the real atmosphere, the TMY (typical meteorological Year) data which obtained from the 22 solar sites operated by KMA(Korea Meteorological Administration) during 11 years(2000 to 2010) is used as the input data of solar radiation model. The distribution of calculated solar radiation is similar to the observation, except in Andong, where it is overestimated, and in Mokpo and Heuksando, where it is underestimated. Statistical analysis is performed on calculated and observed monthly solar radiation on horizontal surface, and the calculation is overestimated from the observation. Correlationis 0.95 and RMSE (Root Mean Square Error) is10.81 MJ. The result shows that optimum N-S slope angles of solar panel are about $2^{\circ}$ lower than station latitude, but E-W slope angles are lower than ${\pm}1^{\circ}$. There are three types of solar panels: horizontal, fixed with optimum slope angle, and panels with tracker system. The energy efficiencies are on average 20% higher on fixed solar panel and 60% higher on tracker solar panel than compared to the horizontal solar panel, respectively.

  • A satellite component must withstand vibration caused when launch vehicle acoustics and engine rumble transfer to it through its structural mount. Components shall be subjected to environmental tests after manufacturing process thus the environmental test conditions are needed for component level test including vibration and shock. This paper deals with derivation of component-level environmental test specifications, especially for solar panels of STSAT-2(Science & Technology SATellite-2). Sine sweep random vibration, and shock test conditions were generated for solar panels by assuming the satellite as single-degree-of-freedom system with a base excitation.
