We investigate the solar cycle variation of microwave and extreme ultraviolet (EUV) intensity in latitude to compare microwave polar brightening (MPB) with the EUV polar coronal hole (CH). For this study, we used the full-sun images observed in 17 GHz of the Nobeyama Radioheliograph from 1992 July to 2016 November and in two EUV channels of the Atmospheric Imaging Assembly (AIA) $193{\AA}$ and $171{\AA}$ on the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) from 2011 January to 2016 November. As a result, we found that the polar intensity in EUV is anti-correlated with the polar intensity in microwave. Since the depression of EUV intensity in the pole is mostly owing to the CH appearance and continuation there, the anti-correlation in the intensity implies the intimate association between the polar CH and the MPB. Considering the report of Gopalswamy et al. (1999) that the enhanced microwave brightness in the CH is seen above the enhanced photospheric magnetic field, we suggest that the pole area during the solar minimum has a stronger magnetic field than the quiet sun level and such a strong field in the pole results in the formation of the polar CH. The emission mechanism of the MPB and the physical link with the polar CH are not still fully understood. It is necessary to investigate the MPB using high resolution microwave imaging data, which can be obtained by the high performance large-array radio observatories such as the ALMA project.
In today's age when telecommunications using satellite has become part of our daily lives, one has to be employ preventive measures to avert any possible danger, of which solar activity is the major cause. Coronal mass ejections (CMEs) heading towards the Earth can lead to disturbances in the Earth's magnetosphere, if their magnetic field is oriented southward. Monitoring of solar filaments in this case becomes very very crucial, as their eruption is associated with most of the CMEs. Monitoring of solar filaments in this case becomes very very crucial, as their eruption is associated with most of the CMEs. Also, filaments show activation up to a few hours prior to launch of a CME and thus can provide advance warning. In this study, we present an algorithm for the detection of solar filaments seen in the extreme ultraviolet (EUV) from Atmospheric Imaging Assembly (AIA) on board the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO). Various morphological operations are employed to identify and extract the filaments. These filaments are then tracked in order to determine their size and location continuously.
Space Solar Telescope (SST) is a space project for solar research, its main parameters are that total weight 2.0T, sun synchronous polar circular orbit, altitude of the orbit 730KM, 3 axis stabilized attitude system, power 1200W, telemetry of the downlink rate 30Mb/s, size $5{\ast}2{\ast}2\;M^3$, mission life 3 years. It is expected it will be launched in 2001 or later. The main objective is structure and evolution of solar vector magnetic field with very high spatial resolution. The payloads are consisted of 6 instruments: Main optical telescope with 1-M diameter and diffraction limited resolution 0.1 arc second, EUV imaging telescope with a bundle of four telescopes and 0.5 arc second resolution, spectrometric optical coronagraph, wide band spectrometer, H-alpha and white light telescope and solar and interplanetary radiospectrometer. An assessment study between China and Germany is under operation.
We have intensively carried out numerical calculations on flare predictions from the solar activity data for photospheric sunspots, chromospheric flare and plages, coronal X-ray intensities and 2800MHz radio fluxes, by using multilinear regression method. Intensities of solar flares for the next day have been predicted from the solar data between 1977-1982 and 1993-1996. Firstly, we have calculated flare predictions with the multilinear regression method, by using separate solar data in growth and decay phase of sunspot area and magnetic field strength from the whole data on solar activities. Secondly, the same operations as above have been made for the remaining data after removal of the data with large deviation from the mean calculated by the above prediction method. we have reached a conclusion that average hit ratio of correct predictions to total predictions of flares with class of M5 over has been as high as 70% for the first case and that of correct prediction number to total observation number has been shown as 61%.
Recent spectropolarimetric observations with high spatial resolution and high polarization sensitivity have provided us with new insight to better understand the quiet-Sun magnetism. This talk is concerned with the ubiquitous transient horizontal magnetic fields in the quiet-Sun, as revealed by the Solar Optical Telescope (SOT) on board Hinode satellite. Exploiting the SOT data with careful treatment of photon noise, we reveal the enigmatic properties of these horizontal magnetic fields such as lifetime, size, position in terms of granular structure, occurrence rate, three-dimensional structure, total magnetic flux, field strength distribution, relationship with the meso- and super-granulations and so on. Based on these observational consequences, we conjecture that the local dynamo process, which takes place in a relatively shallow layer with the granular size, produces these transient horizontal magnetic fields and that these horizontal magnetic fields contribute to the considerable amount of quiet-Sun magnetic fields. We also estimate the magnetic energy flux carried by these horizontal magnetic fields based on the statistical data, and find that the total magnetic energy is comparable to the total chromospheric and coronal energy loss, implying their important role for the chromospheric heating and dynamism.
The well-known solar cycle controls almost the entire appearance of the solar photosphere. We therefore presume that the continuous emission of visible light from the solar surface follows the solar cyclic variation. In this study, we examine the solar cyclic variation of photospheric brightness in the visible range using solar images taken by the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO)/Michelson Doppler Imager (MDI). The photospheric brightness in the visible range is quantified via the relative intensity acquired from in the raw solar images. In contrast to total solar irradiance, the relative intensity is out of phase with the solar cycle. During the solar minimum of solar cycles 23-24, the relative intensity shows enhanced heliolatitudinal asymmetry due to a positive asymmetry of the sunspot number. This result can be explained by the strength of the solar magnetic field that controls the strength of convection, implying that the emission in the visible range is controlled by the strength of convection. This agrees with the photospheric brightness increasing during a period of long spotless days.

This paper applies the Orbital Geometry-based Bias Estimation Algorithm to the magnetometer measurement data of KOMPSAT-1 and 2 and analyzes the induced magnetic field bias caused by the solar panels and electronics boxes in spacecraft bus. This paper reveals that the estimation and correction of the induced magnetic field bias copes with the aging process of magnetometer and makes it possible to carry on the satellite mission by extending its lifetime.
We have intensively examined the structure of photospheric magnetic fields obtained from the calculation of the polarized radiation transfer for the model atmosphere. To determine more reliable magnetic field in the photospheric region composed of umbra, penumbra and quite area, we have calculated the polarized radiative transfer for a magnetically sensitive spectral line, FeI $6302.5{\AA}$, using our composite model representing three kinds of the atmospheric area distinguished by the pixel value of the Stokes I image over the region. Polarization data of the full Stokes parameters, used in this paper had been obtained from the vector magnetograph on Solar Flare Telescope of National Astronomical Observatory at Mitaka(MTK) in Japan. According to our investigation on the active region in the photosphere, it has been found that the large current density(${\geq}8{\times}10^2A/km^2$) and shear angle(${\geq}85^{\circ}$) should be distributed along the magnetic neutral line. To be compared with the results of MTK, our results in transverse magnetic field strength and direction are similar with those of MTK, however our longitudinal field strength at the center of the spot is somewhat(${\sim}1000$ Gauss) larger than MTK.
Forbush Decreases (FDs) are representative events of abrupt decrease in galactic cosmic ray intensity. They are known to be strongly associated with solar wind events such as interplanetary shock (IP shock) and magnetic cloud (MC). In order to examine effectiveness of the MC on FDs, I studied the 44 MCs that occurred during the 2 years from 1998 to 1999 and investigated the properties of interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) and solar wind. As a result, I found that 11 out of 44 MCs are associated with the FDs. In particularly, it is noted that the FDs are driven by the IP shock sheaths which are associated with over 13 nT of IMF magnitude, 3 nT of IMF turbulence, and 550km/s of solar wind speed. This result indicates that magnetic cloud and its interplanetary shock sheath work as a modulator of the cosmic ray intensity.
The relation between substorm occurrences and HILDCAA events has been an issue. We have studied the association of particle injections with substorm onsets during HILDCAA intervals for the first half of year 2003. The examination of aurora images observed by IMAGE spacecraft and electron flux data measured by LANL satellites exhibits a close association of repetitive particle injections with substorm activity. We also find that HILDCAA events can occur equally frequently during slow speed solar wind streams as long as the interplanetary magnetic field exhibits Alfvenic wave feature.
