Since the solar energy resource is the main input for sizing any solar energy utilization system, it is essential to utilize the solar radiation data as an application and development of solar energy system increase. It will be necessary to understand and evaluate the insolation data. The Korea Institute of Energy Research(KIER) has begun collecting horizontal global insolation data since May, 1982 at 16 different locations in Korea and for the more detailed analysis, images taken by geostationary satellite may be used to estimate solar irradiance fluxes at earth's surface. It is based on the empirical correlation between a satellite derived cloud index and the irradiance at the ground. From the results, the measured data has been collected at 16 different stations and estimated using satellite at 44 different stations over the Korean peninsula from 1982 to 2010. The Result of analysis shows that the annual-average daily global radiation on the horizontal surface is 3.66 $kWh/m^2/day$ and estimated solar radiation fluxes show reliable results for estimating the global radiation with average deviation of -7.2 to +3.7 % from the measured values.

The reliable Typical Meteorological Year (TMY) data, sometimes called Test Reference Year (TRY) data, are necessary in the feasibility study of renewable energy installation as well as zero energy building. In Korea, there are available TMY data; TMY from Korea Institute of Energy Research (KIER), TRY from the Korean Solar Energy Society (KSES) and TRY from Passive House Institute Korea (PHIKO). This study aims at examining their characteristics by using Principle Component Analysis (PCA) at six ground observing stations. First step is to investigate the annual averages of meteorological elements from TMY data and their standard deviations. Then, PCA is done to find which principle components are derived from different TMY data. Temperature and solar irradiance are determined as the main principle component of TMY data produced by KIER and KSES at all stations whereas TRY data from PHIKO does not show similar result from those by KIER and KSES.
We evaluate the degradation of receiver sensitivity induced by direct and indirect exposure to solar irradiance in free-space optical communication systems. For this purpose, we calculate the variances of numerous noise components arising from solar irradiance, and then estimate the receiver sensitivity penalties for intensity-modulation/direct-detection and coherent systems. The results show that the penalties are less than 1.3 dB when indirect sunlight impinges on the detector, regardless of the system. However, the sensitivity penalties are estimated to be larger than 30 dB when the sunlight is directly incident upon the receiver. These penalties are barely reduced if we insert an optical polarizer, or if we adjust the bandwidth of an optical filter at the receiver to be as narrow as the signal's bandwidth.

Reliable information on the surface solar radiation is indispensable for rebuilding food production system in the famine plagued North Korea. However, transfer of the related modeling technology of South Korea is not possible simply because raw data such as solar radiation or sunshine duration are not available. The objective of this study is restoring solar radiation data at 27 synoptic stations in North Korea by using satellite remote sensing data. We derived relationships between MODIS radiation estimates and the observed solar radiation at 18 locations in South Korea. The relationships were used to adjust the MODIS based radiation data and to restore solar radiation data at those pixels corresponding to the 27 North Korean synoptic stations. Inverse distance weighted averaging of the restored solar radiation data resulted in gridded surfaces of monthly solar radiation for 4 decadal periods (1983-1990, 1991-2000 and 2001-2010), respectively. For a direct application of these products, we produced solar irradiance estimates for each sub-grid cell with a 30 m spacing based on a sun-slope geometry. These products are expected to assist planning of the North Korean agriculture and, if combined with the already prepared South Korean data, can be used for climate change impact assessment across the whole Peninsula.

Normally, PV system is designed using local weather condition like lowest and highest temperature and irradiance. But this might give misleading results because it is not realistic data of PV module itself. To give more specific description of PV system, we tested photovoltaic(PV) modules' temperature, irradiance and maximum power generation characteristics from January to December in 2008 for 3kW PV system. From this, we could deeply analyze the accumulation temperature, electrical characteristics of PV module in various condition. So precise approach to PV system design can be done. The detail description is specified as the following paper.

The purpose of this study was to predict road surface temperature using high-resolution solar radiation data. The road surface temperature prediction model (RSTPM) was applied to predict road surface temperature; this model was developed based on the heat-balance method. In addition, using SOLWEIG (SOlar and LongWave Environmental Irradiance Geometry-model), the shadow patterns caused by the terrain effects were analyzed, and high-resolution solar radiation data with 10 m spatial resolution were calculated. To increase the accuracy of the shadow patterns and solar radiation, the day that was modeled had minimal effects from fog, clouds, and precipitation. As a result, shadow areas lasted for a long time at the entrance and exit of a tunnel, and in a high-altitude area. Furthermore, solar radiation clearly decreased in areas affected by shadows, which was reflected in the predicted road surface temperatures. It was confirmed that the road surface temperature should be high at topographically open points and relatively low at higher altitude points. The results of this study could be used to forecast the freezing of sections of road surfaces in winter, and to inform decision making by road managers and drivers.

Spatial interpolation has become a common procedure in converting temperature forecasts and observations at irregular points for use in regional scale ecosystem modeling and the model based decision support systems for resource management. Neglection of terrain effects in most spatial interpolations for short term temperatures may cause erroneous results in mountainous regions, where the observation network hardly covers full features of the complicated terrain. A spatial interpolation model for daytime hourly temperature was formulated based on error analysis of unsampled site with respect to the site topography. The model has a solar irradiance correction scheme in addition to the common backbone of the lapse rate - corrected inverse distance weighting. The solar irradiance scheme calculates the direct, diffuse and reflected components of shortwave radiation over any surfaces based on the sun-slope geometry and compares the sum with that over a reference surface. The deviation from the reference radiation is used to calculate the temperature correction term by an empirical conversion formula between the solar energy and the air temperature on any sloped surfaces at an hourly time scale, which can be prepared seasonally for each land cover type. When this model was applied to a 14 km by 22 km mountainous region at a 10 m horizontal resolution, the estimated hourly temperature surfaces showed a better agreement with the observed distribution than those by a conventional method.
This study was carried out to evaluate the operating performances of the evaporation desalination system with solar energy. This system was designed to use evacuated solar collector as the heat source, supplying the required heat energy and photovoltaic power as the electric source, supplying required power to pumps in the desalination system. The 5kW photovoltaic power generation system to make the electricity, the single-stage fresh water generator with plate heat exchanger, and remote control and monitoring system. Solar desalination system was designed and installed in Jeju-island, Korea in 2006, after about 4 years of operation, usability and stability of solar desalination system was guaranteed. The system comprises of the desalination unit which was designed to have daily fresh water capacity of $2m^3$, a $120m^2$ evacuated tubular solar collector to supply the heat, a $6m^3$ heat storage tank, and a 5.2kW photovoltaic power generation to supply the electricity to hydraulic pumps for the heat medium fluids. On a clear day, average daily solar irradiance in Jeju-island was measured to be $500W/m^2$ and the daily fresh water yield showed to be more than 500 liters under this condition. After around three years of a long term operation of the system from January 2007 to August 2009, average daily freshwater yield was analyzed to be around $330{\ell}$. The relationship equation between solar irradiance and freshwater yield was found to be y=1.1806x - 107.89.
Solar ultraviolet-B (UV-B) irradiances incident on a horizontal surface at Taegu, Korea during 1996-1998 were calculated with 5 minute averages of measurements taken every 30 seconds by a broadband UV-B sensor. The average, maximum and minimum of daily UV-B dose were 11.31, 22.04 and 3.20kJ m$^{-2}$ day$^{-1}$ , respectively, for the measuring period. Variations in stratospheric ozone concentration measured from space explain 85% of changes in the daily UV-B dose. It was expected that decrease of 50 Du in stratospheric ozone cause increase of 24.1% in daily UV-B dose in this study.

In this study, a variable step algorithm is proposed on the basis of the perturb and observe method. The proposed algorithm can follow the maximum power point (MPP) quickly when solar irradiance changes rapidly. The proposed technique uses the voltage change characteristic at the MPP when the environment changes because of insolation or temperature. The MPP is tracked through the voltage control using a variable step method. This method determines the sudden change of solar irradiance by setting the threshold value and operates in fast tracking mode to track the MPP rapidly. When the operation point reaches the MPP, the mode switches to the variable step mode to minimize the steady state error. In addition, the output disturbance is decreased through the optimization of the control method design. The performance of the proposed MPPT algorithm is verified through simulation and experiment.
