  • This study was carried out the design and analysis of solar thermal system with preheating of returning district heating water for the Chung-ju district heating and cooling system. Two different types of solar collectors are used for this system. TRNSYS simulation program was used for the analysis. As a results, the solar system efficiency is $35.8\%$ for the plate type and $45.1\%$ for the evacuated type solar collector in the case of $50^{\circ}C$ for the returning district heating water temperature. The returning district heating water temperature is on of the very important factors that is influence on the system efficiency. So the effect of the returning district heating water temperature on the system efficiency is analyzed in this study.

  • This study was carried out solar heating system design for district heating and it's the performance analysis by experiment. This experimental system was installed in Bundang district heating area in the end of 2006. The flat plate and vacuum tube solar collector are combined in one system. So district heating water is heated first by flat plate solar collector and than by vacuum tube solar collector. This solar heating system has not a solar buffer tank and is operating with variable flow rate to obtain a setting temperature of $90{\sim}95^{\circ}C$. As a result, the daily solar thermal collection efficiency is about 30 to 40% for the plate type and 50 to 55% for the vacuum tube solar collector. It varied especially depend on the weather condition like as solar radiation and ambient temperature. This variable flow rate system can be also reduced much pumping power more than 50%.

  • In this study the thermal performance and economic analysis program of solar heating system for district heating was developed. This program, named SOLAN-DHS and based on TRNSYS, consisted of four modules like as user's interface for system input/output, library, and utilities and a calculating engine. SOLAN-DHS simplifies user's input data through the database of most system engineering data including weather data of 17 areas in Korea. Five different types of solar systems which can be applicable to district heating system were presented in this program. Due to the user-friendly layout, all design parameters can be changed quickly and easily for the influence on system efficiency. The reliability of SOLAN-DHS was finally verified by the experiments.

  • In this study, the design of the solar heating system for district heating as well as it's operating characteristics and the performance analysis was carried out. This solar district heating system was composed of two different types of solar collector circuit, flat plate and vacuum tube solar collector, in a system. This system supply constant temperature of hot water without solar buffer tank. For this, the proportional(variable flow rate) control was used. The experimental facility for this study was used the Bundang district solar heating system which was installed in the end of 2006. The operating characteristics and behaviour of each collector circuits are investigated especially for the system design and control. The yearly solar thermal efficiency is 47.5% on the basis of aperture area and 39.8% on the basis of gross area of collector. As a result this solar heating system without solar buffer tank and with proportional controller was testified a very effective and simplified system for district heating. It varied especially depend on the weather condition like as solar radiation and ambient temperature.

  • This study analyzed by simulation using TRNSYS as well as by experiment on the solar district heating system installed for the first time for the district heating system in Bundang. Simulation analysis using TRNSYS focused on the thermal behavior and long-term thermal efficiency of solar system. Experiment carried out for the reliability of simulation system. This solar system where the circuits of two different collectors, flat plate and vacuum tube collector, are connected in series by a collector heat exchanger, and the collection characteristics of each circuit varies. Therefore, these differences must be considered for the system's control. This system uses variable flow rate control in order to obtain always setting temperature of hot water by solar system. Specifically, this is a system that heats returning district heating water (DHW) at approximately $60^{\circ}C$ using a solar collector without a storage tank, up to the setting temperature of approximately $85{\sim}95^{\circ}C$ To realize this, a flat plate collector and a vacuum tube collector are used as separate collector loops. The first heating is performed by a flat plate collector loop and the second by a vacuum tube collector loop. In a gross collector area basis, the mean system efficiency, for 4 years, of a flat plate collector is 33.4% and a vacuum tube collector is 41.2%. The yearly total collection energy is 2,342GJ and really collection energy per unit area ($m^2$) is 1.92GJ and 2.37GJ respectively for the flat plate vacuum tube collector. This result is very important on the share of each collector area in this type of solar district heating system.

  • The article deals with system technology of a new solar heating system which systematically combines exiting solar collector technology, auxiliary electrical water heating, floor heating system and well insulated construction method and its application of this system to apartment house heating system in the cold region, and also analyzed performance of the new system in terms of technical and economic feasibility. Results shows that energy efficiency approaches up to 50% of the energy consumption of local construction from 1980 to 1981. The implementation of "DQ technology" to floor heating system achieved from 79% to 85% of the energy-saving benefits comparing to other housing units which were supplied by the local district heating plant.

  • In this study, the performance and behavior of solar heating system according to the system control scheme, variable flow control (proportional control) and constant flow control (on-off control) was carried out by experiment. The on-off control is used generally for solar thermal system by now. But the proportional control is used for the solar district heating system which is supplied the higher temperature of water than that of desired. The proportional control logic that pump speed is varied in an attempt to maintain a specified outlet temperature of solar heating system was developed and tested for the use widely for the small and medium solar thermal system. The results are as following. First, the proportional controller which is made here could be adopted the characteristics for setting temperature control. Second, the proportional control is better than the on-off control in the side of the performance of thermal stratification in storage tank. Third, the operating energy(electricity consumption by pump) of solar thermal system can be saved more than 60% using the proportional control comparing to the on-off control.

  • A simulation program is developed for the optimal design of small scale district heating and cooling system. Main features for the simulation program are the reliability and the easiness for the optimal design of the DHC(District Heating and Cooling) systems. In order for implementing those features, the operational characteristics according to the prime movers is modeled based on the materials of efficiency as a function of operational load. The unit energy load model is also developed extensively for several building types, of which the corresponding district consist, such as apartment complex, hotel, hospital, buildings for business and commercial use respectively. The specific features and the overall procedure of the simulation are described in brief in this paper. The results of the simulation for several test cases will be presented in subsequent study.

  • This paper describes a design strategy at conceptual design stage using RETScreen software tool for building application of renewable energy resources. Currently, government and public buildings are required to adopt renewable energy systems with a minimum requirement for the amount of renewable energy supply. Meanwhile, there is a certificate program for private office buildings to enhance propagation of renewable energy systems. When considering application of renewable energy systems to a building, it is worthwhile developing a method to determine optimal design sizes of renewable energy systems. In the paper, a design strategy is introduced with a couple of case studies to determine optimal capacities of each renewable energy system in a building and suggest to use the method to evaluate the system for the building certificate program and the mandatory renewable target program. Objective functions considered in the study are initial system cost and reduction of CO2 emissions from the system. In the optimization study, it is assumed that solar thermal collectors are installed to satisfy solar fraction of 60%. Other renewable energy systems such as ground-source heat pump, solar PV and non-renewable systems such as electric chiller and gas-fired boiler are sized using an optimal sizing method with RETScreen suggested the authors previously.
