A parabolic dish concentrator used in a high temperature application of solar energy tracks the sun's movement by two axis sun tracking system. In such a system, sun tracking performance affects the system efficiency directly. Generally the higher the tracking accuracy is, the better the system performance is. A large number of parabolic dish type concentrators has been developed and implemented in the world. However none of them clearly provided a qualitative method of how the accuracy of the sun tracking system can be evaluated. The work presented here is the evaluation of sun tracking performance of parabolic dish concentrator, which follows the sun's movement by the sensor, using computer vision system. We install a camera on the parabolic dish concentrator. While the concentrator follows the sun, sun's images are captured continuously. Then the performance of sun tracking system was evaluated by analyzing the variation of the position of the sun in the images.
The intermediate range of temperatures($100{\sim}300^{\circ}C$) which can be achieved with CPCs(Compound Parabolic Concentrators) without tracking device provides both economic and thermal advantages for solar collector design. The present paper summarizes critical design considerations for CPC with cylindrical absorber and its optical performance using ray tracing program. Concentration ratios vary as acceptance half angle, ratio of reflector height to aperture width and ratio of reflector area to aperture area. This effects showed that the concentration ratio was increased as acceptance angle but optimum ratio of reflector height to aperture width existed at critical value. As a result of ray tracing, solar ray losses was maximized at acceptance half angle and this problem was solved by increasing absorber tube diameter. The concentrating flux distribution on the absorber surface was uniform but peak flux existed.
The work presented here is a design and development of sun tracking system for the parabolic dish concentrator. Parabolic dish concentrator is mounted on azimuth and elevation tracking mechanism, and controlled to track the sun with computed and measured sun positions. Sun tracking mechanism is composed of 1/30000 speed reducer(3 stages) and 400W AC servomotor for each axis. The nominal tracking speed of each axis is ${\pm}0.6^{\circ}/sec$ and the system has a driving range of $340^{\circ}$ in azimuth and of $135^{\circ}$ in elevation. Sun tracking control system consists of sun sensor, wind speed and direction measurement system, AC servomotor position control system and personal computer as a master controller. Sun sensor detects the sun located within ${\pm}50^{\circ}$ measured from the sun sensor normal direction. Computer computes the sun position, sunrise and sunset times and controls the orientation of parabolic dish concentrator through the AC servomotor position control system. It also makes a decision of whether the system should follow the sun or not based on the information collected from sun sensor and wind speed and direction measurement system. The sun tracking system developed in this work is implemented for the experimental work and shows a good sun tracking performance.
The most effective methods for utilizing solar energy are to use the sunlight and solar thermal energy such as hybrid panel simultaneously and to use concentrator. From such a view point systems using various kinds of photovoltaic panels are constructed in the world. However, there has not been a hybrid panel with a concentrator. If the sunlight is concentrated on solar cell, cell conversion efficiency increases and the temperature of the solar cell s increases. As the temperature of the solar cells increases, the cell conversion efficiency gradually decreases. For maintaining the cell conversion efficiency constant, it is necessary to keep solar cell at low temperature. In this paper, after designing a concentration rate for concentrating, we propose a model for cooling the cell and for using wasted heat. And, we compare it with conventional panels after calculating the electrical and thermal efficiency, using the energy balance equation.
One of the most effective methods for utilizing solar energy is to combine thermal solar and optical energy simultaneously using a hybrid panel. Many systems using various kinds of photovoltaic panels have already been constructed. But utilizing solar energy by means of a hybrid panel with concentrator has not been to be attempted yet. Normally if sunlight is directed on the solar cell, and there is no increase in temperature, the absorption energy of each cell will increase per unit area. In a silicon solar cell. however, cell conversion efficiency decreases according to the increasing temperature. Therefore, to maintain cell conversion efficiency under normal condition, it is necessary to keep the cell at operating temperature. we design and make new hybrid panel with cooling system to prevent increasing of temperature on cell, collect effectively thermal energy. We compared performance of new hybrid panel with PV module and thermal panel. We also evaluated conversion efficiency, electric power and thermal capacity and confirmed cooling effect from thermal absorption efficiency.

Cylindrical parabolic solar concentrators of small concentration ratio are attractive options for working temperatures around $120^{\circ}C$. The heat gained can be utilized in many applications such as air conditioning, space heating, heating water and many others. These collectors can be easily manufactured and do not need to track the sun continuously. Using a heat pipe as a solar absorber makes the system more compact and easy to install. This study is devoted to modeling a system of cylindrical parabolic solar concentrators of small concentration ratio (around 5) fitted with a heat pipe absorber with a porous wick. The heat pipe is surrounded by evacuated glass tube to reduce thermal losses from the heat pipe. The liquid and vapor flow equations, energy equation, the internal and external boundary conditions were taken into consideration. The system of equations was solved and the numerical results were validated against available experimental and numerical results. The validated heat pipe model was inserted in an evacuated transparent glass tube as the absorber of the cylindrical parabolic collector. A calculation procedure was developed for the system, a computer program was developed and tested and numerical simulations were realized for the whole system. An experimental solar collector of small concentration, fitted with evacuated tube heat pipe absorber was constructed and instrumented. Experiments were realized with the concentrator axis along the E-W direction. Results of the instantaneous efficiency and heat gain were compared with numerical simulations realized under the same conditions and reasonably good agreement was found.
This paper introduces a preliminary work for the design of a mini-dish cluster system for power generation. Each mini-dish [typically has a 20 to 30 cm in diameter] is designed with a simple parabolic profile concentrating sun light [after the glass glazing cover to avoid dust deposition on the reflector and facilitate cleaning] onto a centrally located small plane[or concave] mirror which is placed on the bottom side of a transparent glass cover. The mirror with a mini-dish concentrator is designed to focus beam radiation onto a focal point before it enters a bundle of optical fibers connected to a remote receiver for power generation. Different options are considered in designing a mini-dish concentrator to maximize its effectiveness for the collection and use of solar energy.
This paper shows an application of single crystal metals and Single Shell Polymer Concentrator (SSPC) to Solar Thermal Propulsion (STP). Based on it, we fabricated a breadboard model of STP system (STP-BBM) for microsatellites. We also proposed Eco-Friendly End-of-Life De-Orbiting (EFELDO) by using such a high performance STP system.

In this study, we study of luminescent solar concentrators comprise thick glass with broadband antireflection coating deposited on the top surfaces and inorganic phosphor layers contacted on the bottom surfaces. Solar cells are contacted to the lateral surfaces of the glass. Experimental results show the broadband antireflection coating increased the short-circuit current of the solar cell.
