In this study, a solar light collector that collects and transmits solar light required for crop production in a closed plant production system was developed. The solar light collector consisted of a Fresnel lens for collecting solar light, and a tracking actuator for tracking solar light from sunrise to sunset to increase the light collection efficiency. The optical fiber that transmitted solar light was made of Glass Optical Fiber (GOF), and it had an excellent optical transmission rate. After collecting the solar light, the amount of light was measured at 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, and 30 cm distances from the GOF through the darkroom by using a light sensor logger connected to a quantum and pyranometer sensor. Compared with solar light, the light intensity of pyranometer sensor measured at 5 cm was 114% higher than solar light, and 61% at 10 cm. In addition, it was observed that it is possible to transmit the necessary amount of light for growing crops up to about 15 cm (as over 22%) through GOF. Therefore, adding diffusers to the solar light collector should be expected to replace artificial light in plant factories or plug seedlings nurseries for leafy vegetables. More studies on the solar light collection devices and the light transmission devices that have high light collection efficiency should be conducted.

Localized solar irradiance is normally derived from atmospheric transmission influenced by atmospheric composition and conditions of the target area. Specially, for the area with complex coastal lines such as Taean gun, the accurate estimation of solar irradiance requires for in depth analysis of atmospheric transmission characteristics based on the localized vertical profiles of the key atmospheric parameters. Using MODTRAN (MODerate resolution atmospheric TRANsmission) 6, we report a computational study on clear day atmospheric transmission and direct solar irradiance estimation of Taean gun using the data collected from 3 ground stations and radiosonde measurement over 93 clear days in 2018. The MODTRAN estimated direct solar irradiance is compared with the measurement. The results show that the normalized residual mean (NRM) is 0.28 for the temperature based MODTRAN atmospheric model and 0.32 for the pressure based MODTRAN atmospheric model. These values are larger than 0.1~0.2 of the other study and we understand that such difference represents the local atmospheric characteristics of Taean gun. The results also show that NRM tends to increase noticeably in summer as the temperature increases. Such findings from this study can be very useful for estimation and prediction of the atmospheric condition of the local area with complex coastal lines.
A n-CdS thin films were evaporated by thermal evaporation method and their structure, optical transmission spectra and electrical characteristics were investigated. The photovoltaic characteristics of solar cells which were fabricated in optimum conditions measured. The evaporated CdS thin films showed in hexagonal structure and above 80% of optical transmission spectra regardless of impurity doping. The high quality thin films could be obtained at 150.deg. C temperature of substrate, which is useful for solar cell window layer with low resistivity of 6*10$\^$-2/(.ohm.-cm) by In doping We measured the electrical and optical characteristics of the n-CdS/p-InP heterojunction solar cells. The most efficient photovoltaic characteristics of heterojunction solar cells had the open circuit voltage of 0.66V, short circuit current density of 13.85mA/cm$\^$2/, fill factor of 0.576 and conversion efficiency of 8.78% under 60mW/cm$\^$2/ illumination.
The transmission of solar light according to the distribution of chromophoric dissolved organic matter (CDOM) was measured in the Pacific Arctic Ocean. The Research Vessel Araon visited the ice-covered East Siberian and Chukchi Seas in August 2016. In the Arctic, solar [ultraviolet-A (UV-A), ultraviolet-B (UV-B), and photosynthetically active radiation (PAR)] radiation reaching the surface of the ocean is primarily protected by the distribution of sea ice. The transmission of solar light in the ocean is controlled by sea ice and dissolved organic matter, such as CDOM. The concentration of CDOM is the major factor controlling the penetration depth of UV radiation into the ocean. The relative CDOM concentration of surface sea water was higher in the East Siberian Sea than in the Chukchi Sea. Due to the distribution of CDOM, the penetration depth of solar light in the East Siberian Sea (UV-B, $9{\pm}2m$; UV-A, $13{\pm}2m$; PAR, $36{\pm}4m$) was lower than in the Chukchi Sea (UV-B, $15{\pm}3m$; UV-A, $22{\pm}3m$; PAR, $49{\pm}3m$). Accelerated global warming and the rapid decrease of sea ice in the Arctic have resulted in marine organisms being exposed to increased harmful UV radiation. With changes in sea ice covered areas and concentrations of dissolved organic matter in the Arctic Ocean, marine ecosystems that consist of a variety of species from primary producers to high-trophic-level organisms will be directly or indirectly affected by solar UV radiation.
This study proposed the fabrication and deposition of high purity crystalline $core-TiO_2/shell-Al_2O_3$ nanoparticles. Morphological properties of $core-TiO_2$ and coated $shell-Al_2O_3$ were confirmed by transmission electron microscope (TEM) and transmission electron microscope - energy dispersive spectroscopy (TEM-EDS). The electrical properties of the prepared $core-TiO_2/shell-Al_2O_3$ nanoparticles were evaluated by applying them to a working electrode of a Dye-Sensitized Solar Cell (DSSC). The particle size, growth rate and the main crystal structure of $core-TiO_2$ were analyzed through dynamic light scattering system (DLS), scanning electron microscope (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The $core-TiO_2$, which has a particle size of 17.1 nm, a thin film thickness of $20.1{\mu}m$ and a main crystal structure of anatase, shows higher electrical efficiency than the conventional paste-based dye-sensitized solar cell (DSSC). In addition, the energy conversion efficiency (6.28%) of the dye-sensitized solar cell (DSSC) using the $core-TiO_2/shell-Al_2O_3$ nanoparticles selectively controlled to the working electrode is 26.1% higher than the energy conversion efficiency (4.99%) of the dye-sensitized solar cell (DSSC) using the conventional paste method.

This study was concerned with the performance of solar air heater using parallel channels. Heat transmission model was developed and fabricated to increase the economic feasibility for solar heating system by using the cheap zinc plate. The prformance was discussed as a function of mass flow rate, and plate, inlet and outlet temperatures. Experimental results show that heat transmission model is sufficient for the analysis of thermal characteristics of air heater and collection efficiency is better than the domestic water heater, as the range 32-49 percent. Collection efficiency in the 2 layers of glass cover is better than that in 1 layer, so it is considered better to use the 2 layers of glass cover during the cold winter season in Korea.

This paper presents the design and simulation of a laser power beaming (LPB) system for an electric vehicle that establishes an optimal power transmission path based on the received signal strength. The LPB system is possible to transfer power from multiple transmitters to a single receiver according to the characteristics of the laser and the solar panel. When the laser beams of multiple transmitters aim at a solar panel at the same time, the received power is the sum of all energy at a solar panel. Our proposed LPB system consists of multiple transmitters and multiple receivers. The transmitter sends its power characteristics as optically coded pulses with a class 1 laser beam and powers as a high-intensity laser beam. By using the attenuated power level, the receiver can estimate the maximum receivable powers from the transmitters and select optimal transmitters. Throughout the simulation, we verified the possibility that different LPB receivers were achieved their required power by the optimal allocation of the transmitter among the various transmitters.

In respect of consuming energy, the optimization is the main objective in the solar energy harvesting sensor system (while battery-based sensor system aims at the minimization), due to the periodicity of solar energy. Aimed at the optimization of the network topology, we suggest 3-level transmission power control algorithm of which level is determined by the amount of residual energy on the rechargeable battery. Additionally, we experiment the effects of our scheme on network-wide performance such as the latency and the duty-cycle, and verify that our scheme shows the best performance in most of the metrics, compared to the schemes with fixed transmission power.
Total solar irradiance (750), total UV irradiunce (TUV) and erythemal UV irradiance (EUV) measured at King Sejong station $(62.22^{\circ}S,\;58.78^{\circ}W)$ in west Antarctica have been used together with total ozone, cloud amount and snow cover to examine the effects of ozone, cloud and snow surface on these surface solar inadiunce over the period of 1998-2003. The data of three solar components for each scan were grouped by cloud amount, n in oktas $(0{\leq}n<3,\;3{\leq}n<4,\;4{\leq}n<5,\;5{\leq}n<6,\;6{\leq}n<7\;and\;7{\leq}n<8)$ and plotted against solar zenith angle (SZA) over the range of $45^{\circ}\;to\;75^{\circ}$. The radiation amplification factor (RAE) is used to quantify ozone effect on EUV. RAF of EUV decreases from 1.51 to 0.94 under clear skies but increases from 0.94 to 1.85 under cloudy skies as SZA increases, and decreases from 1.51 to 1.01 as cloud amount increases. The effects of cloud amount and snow surface on EUV are estimated as a function of SZA and cloud amount after normalization of the data to the reference total ozone of 300 DU. In order to analyse the transmission of solar radiation by cloud, regression analyses have been performed for the maximum values of solar irradiance on clear sky conditions $(0{\leq}n<3)$ and the mean values on cloudy conditions, respectively. The maximum regression values for the clear sky cases were taken to represent minimum aerosol conditions fur the site and thus appropriate for use as a normalization (reference) factor for the other regressions. The overall features for the transmission of the three solar components show a relatively high values around SZAs of $55^{\circ}\;and\;60^{\circ}$ under all sky conditions and cloud amounts $4{\leq}n<5$ and $5{\leq}n<6$. The transmission is, in general, the largest in TUV and the smallest in EUV among the three components of the solar irradiance. If the ground is covered with snow on partly cloudy days $(6{\leq}n<7)$, EUV increases by 20 to 26% compared to snow-free surface around SZA $60^{\circ}-65^{\circ}$, due to multiple reflections and scattering between the surface and the clouds. The relative difference between snow surface and snow-free surface slowly increases from 9% to 20% as total ozone increases from 100 DU to 400 DU under partly cloud conditions $(3{\leq}n<6)$ at SZA $60^{\circ}$. The snow effects on TUV and TSO are relatively high with 32% and 34%, respectively, under clear sky conditions, while the effects changes to 36% and 20% for TUV and TSO, respectively, as cloud amount increases.
