  • This paper shows an application of single crystal metals and Single Shell Polymer Concentrator (SSPC) to Solar Thermal Propulsion (STP). Based on it, we fabricated a breadboard model of STP system (STP-BBM) for microsatellites. We also proposed Eco-Friendly End-of-Life De-Orbiting (EFELDO) by using such a high performance STP system.

  • In this study, a numerical analysis is made of the fluid flow and heat transfer characteristics in the solar arrays of HALE (High Altitude Lond Endurance) UAV. In the stratosphere where UAV operates, high level solar radiation is induced, heat transfer decreases due to natural convection and forced convection is dominated by ambient flow. In order to predict the solar array temperature range in this environment condition, the conjugate heat transfer analysis was carried out for the solar arrays on the main wing. The investigation focused on the temperature distribution of solar array and heat transfer characteristics according to influence of solar energy, flight condition as vehicle speed, air density, temperature.

  • A study of thermal characteristics of the airship considering radiation heat transfer has been conducted by building a numerical model for the airship in order to identify the possibility to obtain the reliable flight performance in severe stratospheric heat conditions. The variations of distributed temperature of the skin and the inner flow by free convection have been calculated according to the change of the solar position. As the results of the analyses, the stratospheric heat conditions slightly have an influence on the flight performance of the airship.

  • This study has been performed on the mechanism of heat transfer between stratospheric airship and its surroundings while the airship is staying in the air at the altitude of 20km. The computational grid of airship has been generated and the results influenced by the number and the shape of grids have been compared. The temperature distributions have been obtained through this thermal analysis considering three modes of heat transfer - conduction, convection and radiation - in stratospheric conditions. Based on the airship's surface and inner temperature variations, the influence of temperature distributions on the helium envelope and the payload has been predicted.

  • A Stratospheric airship should stay long to achieve its original mission. Meanwhile, to obtain what the solar radiation and heat transfer have an effect on Stratospheric condition, heat analysis has been done. For this work, Stratospheric heat condition's been examined and for the numerical analysis, by using Gridgen, grids of airship have been generated. And by using STAR-CD, the study about heat characteristic of airship model was carried out. Especially, with changing the position of the Sun, the temperature change of the airship body was focused on. With this background, the possibility of realizing the simulation of the effects solar radiation have on the Stratospheric airship.

  • COMS (Communication, Ocean and Meteorological Satellite) is a geostationary satellite and developed by KARl for communication, ocean and meteorological observations. It will be tested under vacuum and very low temperature conditions in order to verify thermal design of COMS. The test will be performed by using KARI large thermal vacuum chamber, which was developed by KARI, and the COMS will be the first flight satellite tested in this chamber. The purposes of thermal balance test are to correlate analytical model used for design evaluation and predicting temperatures, and to verify and adjust thermal control concept. KARI has plan to use heating plates to simulate space hot condition especially for radiator panels of satellite such as north and south panels. They will be controlled from 90 K to 273 K by circulating GN2 and LN2 alternatively according to the test phases, while the main shroud of the vacuum chamber will be under constant temperature, 90 K, during all thermal balance test. This paper presents thermal modelling including test chamber, heating plates and the satellite without solar array wing and Ka-band reflectors and discusses temperature prediction during thermal balance test.

  • The new KOMPSAT in preliminary design phase will utilize 4.45 N monopropellant thrusters for attitude and orbit control. In this paper, a numerical plume analysis is performed to verify the effects of thruster plume on the satellite with a 3-D satellite base region model by DSMC. As a result, plume behaviors such as overall plume temperature, total density and thermal radiation to solar array are estimated.
