  • Since the solar energy resource is the main input for sizing any solar photovoltaic system and solar thermal power system, it is essential to utilize the solar radiation data as a application and development of solar energy system increase. It will be necessary to understand and evaluate the insolation data. The Korea Institute of Energy Research(KIER) has begun collecting horizontal global insolation data since May, 1982 and direct normal insolation data since December 1992 at 16 different locations in Korea. Because of a poor reliability of existing data, KIER's new data will be extensively used by solar energy system users as well as by research institutes. From the results, the yearly averaged horizontal global insolation was turned out 3.60kWh/$m^2$/day and a significant difference of horizontal global insolation is observed between 1982~1990 and 1991~1999, 2000~2008 through 16 different cities in Korea.

  • Since the solar energy resource is the main input for sizing any solar energy utilization system, it is essential to utilize the solar radiation data as an application and development of solar energy system increase. It will be necessary to understand and evaluate the insolation data. The Korea Institute of Energy Research(KIER) has begun collecting horizontal global insolation data since May, 1982 at 16 different locations in Korea and for the more detailed analysis, images taken by geostationary satellite may be used to estimate solar irradiance fluxes at earth's surface. It is based on the empirical correlation between a satellite derived cloud index and the irradiance at the ground. From the results, the measured data has been collected at 16 different stations and estimated using satellite at 44 different stations over the Korean peninsula from 1982 to 2010. The Result of analysis shows that the annual-average daily global radiation on the horizontal surface is 3.66 $kWh/m^2/day$ and estimated solar radiation fluxes show reliable results for estimating the global radiation with average deviation of -7.2 to +3.7 % from the measured values.

  • Renewable energy resources such as wind, wave, solar, micro hydro, tidal and biomass etc. are becoming importance stage by stage because of considering effect of the environment. Solar energy is one of the most successful sources of renewable energy for the production of electrical energy following solar energy. And, the solar/photovoltaic cell generators depend on the solar radiation, which is a random variable so this poses difficulty in the system scheduling and energy dispatching, as the schedule of the photovoltaic cell generators availability is not known in advance. This paper proposes to use the two-layered artificial neural networks for predicting the actual solar radiation from the previous values of the same variable.

  • This study presents the calculation of evapotranspiration using estimated daily incoming solar radiation based on maximum daily temperature and minimum daily temperature. The Thornton and Running method(1999) was used to estimate daily incoming solar radiation and then the resulting solar radiation was compared with the measurements. It showed that the estimated daily solar radiation was within reasonable accuracy. In turn, the estimated daily solar radiation was applied to calculate the daily evapotranspiration using the Priestly-Taylor equation and Penman equation and the general results were that evapotranspiration was overestimated in the Priestly-Taylor equation but that Penman was a good estimator with this approach. It is encouraging that it is possible to use this approach, because the required historical data for its estimation are not extensively available and it is not easy to access the meteorological stations in most areas. The calculated eyapotranspiration was compared with that of Hargreaves which was based on daily temperature, and gives us some intuition in terms of engineering.

The horizontal global insolation data have been measured since May, 1982 and direct normal solar insolation data since December 1990 at 16 different sites all over the country and considerable effort has been made for constructing a standard value from measured data at each station. In the results, the average global total solar radiation of the nation is $3,055kcal/m^2.day(12.79MJ/m^2.day)$ and the average clear day direct normal solar beam radiation was $4,600kcal/m^2.day(19.26MJ/m^2.day)$, which indicates possible solar energy application of medium and high temperature technologies with high concentration.

  • Daily solar radiation is essential for water resources planning and environmental impact assessment. However, radiation data is not commonly available in Korea other than in big cities, and there has been no direct measurement for rural areas where water resources planning and environmental impact assessment is usually most needed. In general, missing radiation data is estimated from nearby regional stations within a certain distance, and this study compared two dominant methods (modified Angstrom equation and transmittance interpolation method) at six stations in Nakdong River watershed area. Two methods shows a similar level of accuracy but the transmittance interpolation method is likely to be superior in that there is no need for any measurement element since the modified Angstrom equation require the sunshine hour measurement. This study will contribute to improve water resource and water quality management in Nakdong River watershed.

  • Since the solar radiation is the main input for sizing any solar system, it will be necessary to understand and evaluate the insolation data. The Korea Institute of Energy and Resources (KIER) has began collecting horizontal insolation data since May, 1982 at 15 different locations. Because of a poor reliability of existing data, KIER's new data will be extensively used by the solar system users as well as by research institutes. Among some significant results, we obtained the good results more than we had expected, it is very encouraging that the mean value of Korea's solar radiation is increased by more than 30%.
