Heat transfer characteristics and heat storage rate for vertical cylinder packed with paraffin as a latent heat storage material were theoretically studied. Conduction and convection mechanism were applied to the solid and liquid phase, respectively, and the results were compared with that of pure conduction model. The effects of heating temperature, initial solid temperature and aspect ratio on rate of storage were also studied. In the initial stage of melting, the natural convection is nearly restricted by the friction at the wall and the phase boundary. But it is generated when about 40% of solid melts and again it shrinks by the hot liquid situated on the upper part of the cylinder. So overall melting rate is higher then that for pure conduction model. The increase in heating temperature and aspect ratio activates the natural convection, so melting rate becomes higher. And the larger the aspect ratio, the greater the difference between upper and lower size of the solid. In the initial stage of melting, the initial temperature of solid paraffin has great effect on the melting rate, but as melting proceeds its effect lessens gradually.

In a solar domestic hot water (SDHW) system, solar energy is collected using collector panels, transferred to a circulating heat transfer fluid (brine), and eventually stored in a thermal storage tank (TST) as hot water. In this study, a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model was developed to predict the solar thermal energy storage in a hybrid-type TST equipped with a helical jacket heater (mantle heat exchanger) and an immersed spiral coil heater. The helical jacket heater, which is the brine flow path attached to the side wall of a TST, has advantages including simple system design, low brine flow rate, and enhanced thermal stratification. In addition, the spiral coil heater further enhances the thermal performance and thermal stratification of the TST. The developed model was validated by the good agreement between the CFD results and the experimental results performed with the hybrid-type TST in SDHW settings.
Purpose: The objectives of this study were to construct the solar drying system with evacuated tubular solar collector and to investigate its performance in comparison with indoor and outdoor dryings. Methods: Solar drying system was constructed with using CPC (compound parabolic concentrator) evacuated tubular solar collector. Solar drying system is mainly composed of evacuated tubular solar collector with CPC reflector, storage tank, water-to-air heat exchanger, auxiliary heater, and drying chamber. Performance test of solar drying system was conducted with drying of agricultural products such as sliced radish, potato, carrot, and oyster mushroom. Drying characteristics of agricultural products in solar drying system were compared with those of indoor and outdoor ones. Results: Solar drying system showed considerable effect on reducing the half drying time for all drying samples. However, outdoor drying was more effective than indoor drying on shortening the half drying time for all of drying samples. Solar drying system and outdoor drying for oyster mushroom showed the same half drying time. Conclusions: Oyster mushroom could be dried easily under outdoor drying until MR (Moisture Ratio) was reached to about 0.2. However, solar drying system showed great effect on drying for most samples compared with indoor and outdoor dryings, when MR was less than 0.5.
The tendency to renewables is one of the consequences of changing attitudes towards energy issues. As a result, solar energy, which is the leader among renewable energies based on availability and potential, plays a crucial role in full filing global needs. Significant problems with the solar thermal power plants (STPP) are the operation time, which is limited by daylight and is approximately half of the power plants with fossil fuels, and the capital cost. Exergy analysis survey of STPP hybrid with PCM storage carried out using Engineering Equation Solver (EES) program with genetic algorithm (GA) for three different scenarios, based on eight decision variables, which led us to decrease final product cost (electricity) in optimized scenario up to 30% compare to base case scenario from 28.99 $/kWh to 20.27 $/kWh for the case study. Also, in the optimal third scenario of this plant, the inner carbon dioxide gas cycle produces 1200 kW power with a thermal efficiency of 59% and also 1000 m3/h water with an exergy efficiency of 23.4% and 79.70 kg/h with an overall exergy efficiency of 34% is produced in the tetrageneration plant.
Greenhouse farming was introduced to the Korean farmers in the middle of 1950's and its area has been increased annually. The plastic greenhouse, which is covered with polyethylene or polyvinyl chloride film, has been rapidly spread in greenhouse farming since 1970. The greenhouse farming greatly contributed to the increase of farm household income and the improvement of crop productivity per unit area. Since the greenhouse farming is generally practiced during winter, from November to March, the thermal environment in the plastic greenhouse should be controlled in order to maintain favorable condition for plant growing. Main factors that influence the thermal environment in the plastic greenhouse are solar radiation, convective and radiative heat transfer among the thermal component of the greenhouse, and the use of heat source. The objective of this study was to develop a simulation model for thermal environment of the plastic greenhouse in order to determine the characteristics of heat flow and effects of various ambient environmental conditions upon thermal environments within the plastic greenhouse. The results obtained are summarized as follows: 1. Simulation model for thermal environment of the plastic greenhouse was developed, resulting in a good agreement between the experimental and predicted data. 2. Solar radiation being absorbed in the plant and soil during the daytime was 75 percent of the total solar radiation and the remainder was absorbed in the plastic cover. 3. About 83 percent of the total heat loss was due to convective and radiative heat transfer through the plastic cover. Air ventilation heat loss was 5 to 6 percent of total heat loss during the daytime and 16 to 17 percent during the night. 4. The effectiveness of thermal curtain for the plastic greenhouse at night was significantly increased by the increase of the inside air temperature of the greenhouse due to the supplementary heat. 5. When the temperature difference between the inside and outside of the greenhouse was small, the variation of ambient wind velocity did not greatly affect on the inside air temperature. 6. The more solar radiation in the plastic greenhouse was, the higher the inside air temperature. Because of low heat storage capacity of the plant and soil inside the greenhouse and a relatively high convective heat loss through the plastic cover, the increase of solar radiation during the daytime could not reduce the supplymentary heat requirement for the greenhouse during the night.
Surface heat balance of the northern sea of Cheju Island for summer in 1993 and 1994 is analyzed using the observation data obtained by Marine Research Institute, Cheju National University. Each flux elements at the sea surface is derived from the marine meteorological reports with application of an aerodynamical bulk method for the turbulent heat fluxes, and empirical formulae for the long-wave radiation heat fluxes. The flux divergence of oceanic heat transport and the rate of heat storage in the ocean are estimated as residual. The features of the surface heat balance are mainly decided by the solar radiation flux and the latent heat flux for 199B. But the Bowen Ratios were large for 1993. This means that the sensible heat fluxes were nearly equal to the latent heat fluxes for 1993. In this period, mean flux divergence of oceanic heat transport is about 130 W/$m^2$.
In order to improve the quality of traditionally sun-dried red peppers and to increase the efficiency of drying performance, three types of solar dryers were designed and built, and drying performance of the solar dryers was compared to traditional sun drying. Results obtained from the experiment are summarized as fallows: 1. The air temperature and relative humidity profiles over a 8-hour period measured at the specified locations in the drying chamber of solar dryers appeared to have large variation in each dryer. The rate of drying increased with the temperature rise in the drying chamber of the solar dryer. 2. In general. drying with solar dryers proceeded faster than traditional sun drying. With A'-type of solar dryer developed in the second experiment it was possible to dry red peppers in seven days from an initial moisture content of 80% to safe storage conditions. The drying time with the A'-type solar drier was 50% shorter compared to traditional sun drying. 3. Red peppers appeared to have an increasing or constant-rate drying period until the weight of the product was reduced to about one half the initial weight, followed by a falling-rate drying period. When the dried red peppers were exposed to the atmospere during the night, the moisture content increased as much as 6%, which is much higher than for the grains. 4. It was suggested from the experiment that either a heat storage system or a supplemental heating system in the solar dryer was desirable for more efficient drying operation. 5. It was shown that the solar dryer developed in this study may be suitable for drying other vegetables and fishes, and also offered additional advantages of saving in drying time, maintaining sanitation and minimizing contamination by dust, insects and unfavorable weather condition.
The greenhouse hulk curing and drying system utilizing the direct solar energy was tested to see how much fuel could be saved for curing flue-cured tobacco at the Daegu Experiment Station, Korea Tobacco Research Institute (North latitute: 35$^{\circ}$49'), in 1979. The structure consists of transparent fiberglass exterior, polyurethan boards covered with galvanized iron as the heat absorbers and insulation boards, air duct in which the air is introduced to the furnace room of bulk curing barn, and gravel heat storage system. All exterior surface of heat absorbers, air duct, and gravels were coated with black paint. The air temperature and total radiation were 20.5 to 35.5$^{\circ}C$ and 1004.2 to 1436.2 cal/$\textrm{cm}^2$ during the 3 replicated curing tests, respectively. The greenhouse bulk curing and drying system was able to cut fuel consumption by 25 percent compared with the conventional bulk curing barn. The maximum temperatures for the top absorber and the inlet air of the system were 89$^{\circ}C$ and 64$^{\circ}C$, respectively, and the average temperature of inlet air was higher than that of conventional one by 18$^{\circ}C$.
In the present investigation, experiments on the melting of a phase change material were performed to research heat transfer phenomena generated by means of conduction and natural convection in the vertical tube at inward melting. The phase change material used in the experiments is 99 percent pure n-Docosane paraffin which is measured melting temperature of $42.5^{\circ}C$, latent heat of 37.5 cal/g, heat conductivity of $0.1505W/m^{\circ}C$. Experiments were performed both in the no-subcooling which is initiating it at melting temperature of phase change material, and in the subcooling which means to initiate it under melting temperature of phase change material, in order to compare and investigate the horizontal temperature history, vertical temperature history, ratio of melting and melted mass, figure of the melting front in the vertical tube. In the experimental results, heat transfer from tube wall to phase change material were due to conduction at early stage and due to natural convection with the passage of time, and then occurred melting downward from surface by volumetric expansion. Natural convection affects temperature distribution in the tube, ratio of melting and melted mass, figure of the melting front and then progress rapidly in case of nosubcooling compared to subcooling.
