  • Transparent, photocatalytic, and self-cleaning TiO2 thin film is developed by TiO2 sol-gel coating on glass and polycarbonate (PC) substrates. Acetyl acetone (AcAc) suppresses the precipitation of TiO2 by forming a yellowish (complex) transparent sol-gel. XPS analysis confirms the presence of Ti2p and O1s in the thin films on glass and PC substrates. The TiO2-sol is prepared by stabilizing titanium (IV) isopropoxide (TTIP) with diethylamine and methyl alcohol. The addition of AcAcsilane coupling solution to the TiO2-sol instantaneously turns to yellowish color owing to the complexing of titanium with AcAc. The AcAc solution substantially improves the photocatalytic property of the TiO2 coating layer in MB solutions. The coated TiO2 film exhibits super hydrophilicity without and with light irradiation. The TiO2 thin film stabilized by adding 8.7 wt% AcAc shows the highest photo-degradation for methylene blue (MB) solution under UV light irradiation. Also, the optimum photocatalytic activity is obtained for the 8.7 wt% AcAc-stabilized TiO2 coating layer calcined at 450 ℃. The thin-films on glass exhibit fast self-cleaning from oleic acid contamination within 45 min of UV-light irradiation. The appropriate curing time at 140 ℃ improves the anti-fogging and thermal stability of the TiO2 film coated on PC substrate. The watermark-free PC substrate is particularly beneficial to combat fogging problems of transparent substrates.

  • Oxidative dimerization of methane to C2-hydrocarbons was performed over lead aluminate spinel catalysts. These spinel catalysts were prepared by co-precipitation, aerogel, and sol-gel methods. The active phase of lead aluminate oxides was found to be PbAl2O4 spinel. The activities of the catalysts were strongly dependent on the preparation method as well as the composition of PbAl2O4 phase. The proper oxygen mobility of PbAl2O4 spinel oxides appeared to be important to get high catalytic activity and selectivity for C2-hydrocarbon formation.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the effect of multi or single application of fluoride plus 0.05% NaF solution on the remineralization of dental caries lesion. The microhardness changes of enamel surface were measured after application of fluoride and precipitation of 0.05% NaF solution on 6 groups of cow's tooth on which the artificial carious lesions were formed first. Test groups were calssified into two step application with NaF, $SnF_2$ and APF under different application time conditions plus 0.05% NaF solution(group I, II, III, IV) and single application with APF plus 0.05% NaF solution (group V) and control(0.05% NaF solution only, group IV). The obtained results were as follows. 1. Regarding microhardness change of enamel surface. microhardness increments in group I(NaF for 1 minute+APF for 3 minutes+0.05% NaF solution for 1 minute), II($SnF_2$ 1 min+APF 3 min+NaF sol.), III($SnF_2$ 2 min+APF 2 min+NaF sol.), IV(NaF 2 min+APF 2 min+NaF sol.) and V(APF 4 min+NaF sol.) were significantly greater than group VI.(P<0.05) 2. Microhardness changes of shorter application time of $SnF_2$ (group II) were significantly greater than group III. (P<0.05) 3. Microhardness changes were variable with kinds of fluoride, application sequence and application time of fluoride. but had no relation with the number of fluoride application.

  • $UO_2$ microsphere particles, core material of HTGR(High Temperature Gas Reactor) nuclear fuel, were prepared using by the GSP(Gel Supported Precipitation) method which is a modified-method of the wet sol-gel process. The spherical shape of initial liquid ADU droplets from the vibration nozzle system was continuously kept till the conversion to the final $UO_2$ microsphere. But the size of a final $UO_2$ microsphere was shrunken to about 25% of an initial ADU droplet size. Also, we found that the composition of dried-ADU gel particles was constituted of the very complicated phases, coexisted the U=O, C-H, N-H, N-O, and O-H functional groups by FT-IR. The important factors for obtain the no-crack $UO_2$ microsphere during the thermal treatment processes must perfectly wash out the remained-$NH_4NO_3$ within the ADU gel particle in washing process and the selections of an appropriate heating rate at a suitable gas atmosphere, during the calcining of ADU gel particles, the reducing of $UO_3$ particles, and the sintering of $UO_2$ particles, respectively.

  • The spinel $LiMn_{2}O_{4}$ powders were synthesized at $480^{\circ}C$ for 12 h in air by a sol-gel method using manganese acetate and lithium hydroxide as starting material and the $Fe_{3}O_{4}$ powders were synthesized by the precipitation method using $0.2M-FeSO_{4}{\cdot}H_{2}O$ and 0.5M-NaOH. The synthesized $Fe_{3}O_{4}$ powders were mixed at portion of 5, 10, 15 and 20 wt% about $LiMn_{2}O_{4}$ powders through ball-milling followed by drying at room temperature for 48 h in air. The mixed catalysts were reduced at $350^{\circ}C$ for 3 h by hydrogen and the decomposition rate of carbon dioxide was measured at $350^{\circ}C$ using the reduced catalysts. As the results of $CO_{2}$ decomposition experiments, the decomposition rates of carbon dioxide were 85% in all catalysts but the initial decomposition rates of $CO_{2}$ were slightly high in the case of the $5%-Fe_{3}O_{4}$ added catalyst.

  • Li1.3Al0.3Ti1.7(PO4)3(LATP) is considered a promising material for all-solid-state lithium batteries owing to its high moisture stability, wide potential window (~6 V), and relatively high ion conductivity (10-3-10-4 S/cm). Solid electrolytes based on LATP are manufactured via sintering, using LATP powder as the starting material. The properties of the starting materials depend on the synthesis conditions, which affect the microstructure and ionic conductivity of the solid electrolytes. In this study, we synthesize the LATP powder using sol-gel and co-precipitation methods and characterize the physical properties of powder, such as size, shape, and crystallinity. In addition, we have prepared a disc-shaped LATP solid electrolyte using LATP powder as the starting material. In addition, X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopic measurements are conducted to analyze the grain size, microstructures, and ion conduction properties. These results indicate that the synthesis conditions of the powder are a crucial factor in creating microstructures and affecting the conduction properties of lithium ions in solid electrolytes.

  • This study investigates the sensitivity of a gas sensor to volatile organic compounds (VOCs) at various operating temperatures and catalysts. Nano-sized powdered $WO_3$ prepared by sol-gel and chemical precipitation methods was mixed with various metal oxides. Next, transition metals (Pt, Ru, Pd, and In) were doped on the surface of the mixture. Metal-$WO_3$ thick films were prepared using the screen-printing method. The physical and chemical properties of the films were studied by SEM/EDS, XRD, and BET techniques. The measured sensitivity to VOCs is defined as the ratio ($R_a/R_g$) of resistance ($R_{air}$) of $WO_3$ film in the air to resistance ($R_{gas}$) of $WO_3$ film in a VOCs test gas. The sensitivity and selectivity of the films were tested with various VOCs such as acetaldehyde, formaldehyde, methyl alcohol, and BTEX. The thick $WO_3$ film containing 1 wt % of Ru and 5 wt % of $SnO_2$ showed the best sensitivity and selectivity to acetaldehyde gas at an operating temperature of 300 $^{\circ}C$.

  • Powders and thin-layers of a hexagonal titanium disulfide phase have been successfully prepared by modifying the sol-gel process. The reaction of titanium isopropoxide with hydrogen sulfide causes the precipitation of a precursor which was converted to the disulfide on heat-treatment in $H_2S$ at various temperatures depending on the solvent adopted, whereas that of titanium 2-methoxyethoxide with $H_2S$ produces a stable solution which was spin-casted onto silicon substrates followed by thermolysis to give thin films. Upon heat-treatment in $H_2S$, the disulfides show interesting morphological variations in the form of their powders and thin films, which were characterized by SEM and X-ray diffractometer.

  • Sericin is usually abandoned after the degumming process. However, it could be a valuable bioresource if an economically efficient recovery process could be set up. In this study, sericin was recovered directly from the degummed waste solution by adding calcium chloride, which induced the precipitation of the surfactant, sodium oleate, by charge interaction. The recovery yield was maximum when 10% of calcium chloride was added. Further increase in the calcium chloride concentration induced the precipitation of sericin. The recovered sericin had a molecular weight distribution similar to that of the hot-water-extracted sericin; but some highmolecular- weight sericin could not be recovered. The secondary structure and amino acid composition of the recovered sericin were similar to those of conventional hot-water-extracted sericin. We expect that sericin recovered from the degummed waste solution could be an alternative to the hot-water-extracted sericin, which is widely used in various applications.

  • Effects of additives on physical properties of dover sole skin gelatin prepared by fractional precipitation with ethanol were investigated to obtain basic data for utilizing as food protein source. Physical properties such as gel strength, melting point, gelling point and viscosity of both ethanol- and non-treated gelatins were improved as ferric ion, sugar and ethanol were added to gelatin sol, but were deteriorated as sodium hydroxide and acids were added. Insignificant difference in effects of physical properties on additives such as ferric ion, sodium chloride, sugar, acids and ethanol between ethanol- and non-treated gelatins were not observed.
