This study was conducted by the slump test and the consistency test of the fiber mixed soil which is soil reinforced with fiber as a reinforced material to investigate and estimate the difficulty degree of work and the proper water content. So I would like to present the fundamental data that establishes the work standard of the fiber mixed soil. In conclusion, in this study the slump value of the fiber mixed soil increases over-all according to the increase of the water content although it has a little difference of the increase range and it is smaller than one of the soil. It is estimated that the aggregating and throwing work of the fiber mixed soil would be fine when it has the about 25 % water content and the wall and floor plastering work is the about 30 % ~ 35 % and the flowing and pouring work is the about 40 % water content as well as the mold compacting work is the about 20 %. There is no decreasing of the workability when the soil is reinforced by the fiber because the workability characteristics of the fiber mixed soil is similar to the one of the soil. Therefore, It is estimated that using the fiber as a reinforced material of soil would be appropriate for the construction.
The mechanical properties of the concrete-frozen soil interface play a significant role in the stability and service performance of construction projects in cold regions. Current research mainly focuses on the precast concrete-frozen soil interface, with limited consideration for the more realistic cast-in-place concrete-frozen soil interface. The two construction methods result in completely different contact surface morphologies and exhibit significant differences in mechanical properties. Therefore, this study selects silty clay as the research object and conducts direct shear tests on the concrete-frozen soil interface under conditions of initial water content ranging from 12% to 24%, normal stress from 50 kPa to 300 kPa, and freezing temperature of -3℃. The results indicate that (1) both interface shear stress-displacement curves can be divided into three stages: rapid growth of shear stress, softening of shear stress after peak, and residual stability; (2) the peak strength of both interfaces increases initially and then decreases with an increase in water content, while residual strength is relatively less affected by water content; (3) peak strength and residual strength are linearly positively correlated with normal stress, and the strength of ice bonding is less affected by normal stress; (4) the mechanical properties of the cast-in-place concrete-frozen soil interface are significantly better than those of the precast concrete-frozen soil interface. However, when the water content is high, the former's mechanical performance deteriorates much more than the latter, leading to severe strength loss. Therefore, in practical engineering, cast-in-place concrete construction is preferred in cases of higher negative temperatures and lower water content, while precast concrete construction is considered in cases of lower negative temperatures and higher water content. This study provides reference for the construction of frozen soil-structure interface in cold regions and basic data support for improving the stability and service performance of cold region engineering.
Purpose: Monitoring and control of environmental condition is highly important for optimum control of the conditions, especially in greenhouses and plant factories, and the condition is not uniform within the facility. Objectives of the study were to investigate variability in soil water content and to provide information useful for better irrigation control. Methods: Experiments were conducted in a strawberry-growing greenhouse (greenhouse 1) and a cherry tomato-growing greenhouse (greenhouse 2) in winter. Soil water content, electrical conductivity (EC), and temperature were measured over the entire area, at different distances from an irrigation pump, and on ridge and furrow areas. Results: When measured over the entire greenhouse area, soil water content decreased and temperature and electrical conductivity increased over time from morning to afternoon after irrigation. Water content decreased by distance from the irrigation pump up to 70 m and increased after that, and temperature showed an inverse pattern. Soil water contents on the ridge were lower than those on the furrow, and the differences were 10.2~18.4%, indicating considerable variability. The lowest EC were observed on the furrow and highest values were observed on the ridge. Soil water contents were less and temperature levels were greater at the window side than in the center locations. Conclusions: Selection of number and location of soil water content sensor would be the first step for better water content monitoring and irrigation control. Results of the study would provide basic data useful for optimum sensor location and control for underground greenhouse environment.

This paper reports the experimental results for the determination of the overall partition coefficient of VOCs in unsaturated soil, A chromatographic method was used for the determination of gaseous partition coefficients to natural soil under various water content conditions. The equilibrium vapor pressure of water over saturated salt solution was used to fix the relative humidity of the air and control the water content of the soil systems. The transport behavior was studied for dichloromethane, trichloroethane and dichlorobenzene pollutants, with log octanol-water partition coefficients(log $K_{ow}$ ) which range from 1.25 to 3.39, or water to soil partitioning which varies by 135 times; water solubility constants which vary by 3 times; and vapor pressures which range from 1 to 362 torr. Water content of the soil had a pronounced effect on the effective partition coefficient(between gas and soil + water stationary phase) as well as on the effective dispersion coefficient.

The characteristics and prediction model of the shear strength for unsaturated residual soils was studied. In order to investigate the influence of the initial water content on the shear strength, unsaturated triaxial tests were carried out varying the initial water content, and the applicability of existing prediction models for the unsaturated shear strength was testified. It was shown that the soil - water characteristic curve and the shear strength of the unsaturated soil varied with the change of the initial water content. A sample compacted in the lower initial water content needs a higher suction to get the same degree of saturation while the shear strength of a sample with the lower initial water content displays a lower value. In order to apply the existing prediction models of the unsaturated shear strength to granite residual soils, a correction coefficient, α, on the internal friction angle, ø'was added.

The optimal environmental ranges of the establishment phase for the distribution of Zizania latifolia and Typha angustifolia was determined to develop a set of basic data and criteria of planting substrate for the restoration, conservation and management of wetlands. The study was carried at 17 wetlands in the Kyunggi-do and Gyeongsangnam-do region where inland wetlands place intensively in June, 2005. Total 127 quadrats were sets in growing areas of Zizania latifolia and Typha angustifolia. $NO_3-N$, K, Ca, Mg and Na in the water variables and soil texture, LOI (loss on ignition), soil pH and soil conductivity in the soil variables were analyzed. The optimal range of water depth for the distribution of Zizania latifolia was -5~39cm, $NO_3-N$ content of water was <0.01~0.19ppm, K content of water was 0.1~5.9ppm, Ca content of water 0.5~44.9ppm, Mg content of water was 1.2~11.9ppm, Na content of water 3.4~29.9ppm, water conductivity was 48~450${\mu}S$/cm, respectively. The optimal range of LOI for the distribution of Zizania latifolia was 1.7~11.9%, soil conductivity was 25.5~149.9${\mu}S$/cm, respectively. The optimal range of water depth for the distribution of Typha angustifolia was -20~24cm, $NO_3-N$ content of water was <0.01~0.19ppm, K content of water was 0.2~2.9ppm, Ca content of water 0.6~19.9ppm, Mg content of water was 0.2~5.9ppm, Na content of water 3.5~19.9ppm, water conductivity was 96~450${\mu}S$/cm, respectively. The optimal range of LOI for the distribution of Typha angustifolia was 2.4~15.9%, soil conductivity was 17.6~149.9${\mu}S$/cm, respectively. The optimal soil texture were loam, silt loam and sandy loam in both species. The lower water depth (-20~40cm) is appropriate to increase biodiversity in both species dominated community and it is better to maintain water depth of 40~100cm for water purification. Both species appear frequently in the soil with high silt content.
Relationships between soil factors and the growth of annual ring of Pinus densiflora grown on stony mountain were investigated at two sites of the different parent rocks: the one was formed by granite at Mt. Gwanag, Seoul and the other feldspar porphyry at Mt. Bipa, Daegu. The growth of annual ring was influenced by the physical factors of soil, such as soil depth, field caacity and water content of soil, rather than by the KDICical factors, such as total nitrogen, potassium, and calcium of soil. Of the soil factors affecting the growth of annual ring, soil depth, field capacity, water content of soil and organic matter closely interrelated with each other. All of these factors influenced water content of soil which might affect the water potential of Pinus densiflora leaves. In fact, the leaf water potential, affecting as the main factor for the growth of annual ring, of the pine grown in a deep soil was higher than that of the pine in a shallow soil.
Identifying soil water content as a major factor for evaluating irrigation and water resource is a primary module to develop a prediction model. A variety of PTFs (Pedo-Transfer Functions) are applied in the models to estimate soil water content, the analysis techniques, however, which compare the estimated from models and the measured by instruments, are not reached at the level to demonstrate the effectiveness of the PTFs in Korea. Many soil physicians such as Eom, Peterson, Rawls, Saxton, Bruand, Baties, Tomasella & Hodnett (T&H), and Minasny, have developed analytic models using PTFs. Soil data for the analysis used soil water contents on 347 soil series (10 kPa), 358 soil series (33 kPa), 356 soil series (1,500 kPa) established by NAAS (National Academy of Agricultural Science). A coefficient of determination on soil water content at 10, 33 and 1,500 kPa was the highest as 0.5932 in EM (Eom model), 0.6744 in REM (Rawls model) and 0.6108 in REM, respectively. In conclusion, it is strongly suggested that the use of EM or REM is suitable for estimating soil water content in Korea although SM (Saxton model) has been widely used.

Volumetric soil water contents through a soil profile were monitored to identify the effects of tillage systems and soil physico-chemical characteristic on soil water movement from the soil profile. Water content profiles under no tillage (NT) and conventional tillage (CT) practices were compared at two commercial farms in central Illinois from 1992 through 1994, using neutron-scattering techniques in weekly intervals during each growing season. The volumetric water content of surface soil layers was affected more by tillage systems and rainfall amounts, whereas that of the subsoil layers was more strongly affected by soil types. Soil water percolated faster through Saybrook and Catlin soils than through Drummer, Flanagan, and Ipava soils because Saybrook and Catlin soils have lower clay content and water-retention capacity and higher permeability than Drummer, Flanagan, and Ipava soils. Increased soil organic matter (SOM) in Drummer, Flanagan, and Ipava soils would be attributable to the higher soil water retention than other soil types. Soil water contents in the corn root zone were consistently higher under CT plots than under NT plots.

The soil water characteristics curve (SWCC) represents the relation between soil water potential and soil water content. The shape and range of SWCC according to the relation could vary depending on soil characteristics. The objective of the study was to estimate SWCC depending on soil types and layers and to analyze the trend among them. To accomplish this goal, the unsaturated three soils were considered: silty clay loam, loam, and sandy loam soils. Weighable lysimeters were used for exactly measuring soil water content and soil water potential. Two fitting models, van Genuchten and Campbell, were applied. Two models entirely fitted well the measured SWCC, indicating low RMSE and high $R^2$ values. However, the large difference between the measured and the estimated was found at the 30 cm layer of the silty clay loam soil, and the gap was wider as soil water potential increased. In addition, the non-linear decrease of soil water content according to the increase of soil water potential tended to be more distinct in the sandy loam soil and at the 10 cm layer than in the silty clay loam soil and at the lower layers. These might be seen due to the various factors such as not only pore size distribution, but also cracks by high clay content and plow pan layers by compaction. This study clearly showed difficulty in the estimation of SWCC by such kind of factors.
