Soil cement has been the typical material for the pavement and soft ground improvement. It has not been used up to date because that quality control is not easy and durability is not long enough for practical application. Since environmental influence is important, the application of high strength soil cement pavement has been increased for pedestrian roads of the garden, golf courses and sidewalks recently. In this study, the reference table was suggested for mixing design with appling statistical experimental technique to reference table. The reference table showed the relationship among improved strength, Soilcrete stabilizer, fine sand ratio and superplasticizer agent. The objective soil used in this study was the soft marine clay that is widely found in Korea, the compressive strength range of improved soil was between $50{\sim}150kg/cm^2$.

To recover basic functions of river such as water control, irrigation, environment, culture, a national river improvement project, the four river restoration projects were currently planned and under construction in Korea. This project is designed to preserve cultural assets and ecosystem from flooding, for that reason, environmentally friendly materials of construction are strongly emphasized. In this study, the soil and cement admixtures are developed. And, the compaction test and the unconfined compressive strength test to evaluate applicability of probiotics as environmentally friendly materials are conducted the soil and cement admixtures. As a result, the probiotic culture was not active in completely dried specimen to obtain accurate mixing proportion. It indicates that the probiotics cannot influence on the development the soil and cement admixtures. A further research will focus on the effect of response between polysaccharide environmentally friendly soil stabilizer and natural specimen.
Suitable techniques to stabilize organic soil and improve its engineering behaviour are in demand. Despite various alternatives, nano-additives proved to be an effective stabilizer owing to their strength enhancing properties. The study focuses on using nano-silica as a potential stabilizer to improve organic silt. Soil was treated with four dosages of nano-silica namely 0.2%, 0.4%, 0.6% and 0.8% of dry weight of the soil. Nano-silica treated soil showed a strength increase of nearly 25% at a dosage of 0.4% after curing for two hours. Strength of the treated soil improved with age. Strength improved by nearly 62.9% after 28 days of curing and 221.4% after 180 days of curing due to formation of Calcium - Silicate - Hydrate (CSH) gel in the soil matrix. Dosage of 0.6% nano-silica is observed to be the optimum dosage. Coefficient of permeability and compression index showed an increase by 13.32 and 5.5 times respectively owing to aggregation of particles and creation of void spaces as visualized from the scanning electron micrographs. Further model foundation study and numerical parametric studies using PLAXIS 2D indicate that optimized and economic results can be obtained by varying the additive dosage with depth.
This paper presents the engineering property of light weight soil made of soil mixed with recycled stylofoam and stabilizer. Recycled stylofoam beads is able to use by lightweight fill materials because it is light, adiabatic, and effective for vibration interception. Especially, recycled stylofoam beads is easy to supply because stylofoam have been recycle item in 1996. In this study, physical and geotechnical properties of the light weight mixed soil(weathered granite soil mixed with Stylofoam Beads) were analyzed by laboratory experiments to examine its suitability for backfill materials. Laboratory tests were performed to evaluated strength, bearing capacity, weight, permeability, microphotograph analysis with variation of mixing ratio. Based on the results, it is concluded that the use of recycled stylofoam beads is acceptable lightweight fill.
There are several remediation technologies for heavy metal contaminated soils but increasing cost limits the application of the technology if the contaminated area is large. Therefore, stabilization, which blocks the release of heavy metals or makes slow the release, is one of the applicable technology for the heavy metal contaminated soil. Current study is an applicability test for a smelter area with various stabilizer such as magnetite, hematite, zeolite-A, zeolite-X, zeolite-Y, zinc oxide, calcium oxide, carbon trioxide, manganese oxide, manganese dioxide, fish bone, sodium phosphate. The soil contaminated with arsenic, lead, copper, nickel, and zinc could not be stabilized only one stabilizer which is known to have stability for certain metal. Many of the stabilizer works for a few metal but not all of the heavy metal. In several cases, stabilizers increase the release of the other metals while they stabilize some metals. In general, the stabilizing efficiency was increased with time. For Ni, Pb, calcium oxide, carbon trioxide, manganese oxide had good stabilizing effect in water extractable portion. For Cu, manganese oxide, zeolite showed good results especially in the exchangeable portion of the sequential extraction. For As, magnetite had good ability but most of the metal oxide which showed good result for other heavy metals increased with the release of As. Current study suggest that multiple stabilizers are needed for the contaminated soil and dose of the stabilizer and stabilizing time should be carefully considered for the soil contaminated with various metals.
This paper presents an investigation on the properties of two types of cement kiln dust (CKD)-stabilized dredged sediments, silt and clay with a comparison to hydrated lime stabilization. Unconfined compressive strength (UCS) and California bearing ratio (CBR) tests were conducted to examine the optimal stabilizer content and classify the type of highway material. A strength development model of treated dredged sediments was performed. The influences of various stabilizer types and sediment types on UCS were interpreted with the aid of microstructural observations, including X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy analysis. The results of the tests revealed that 6% of lime by dry weight can be suggested as optimal content for the improvement of clay and silt as selected materials. For CKD-stabilized sediment as soil cement subbase material, the use of 8% CKD was suggested as optimal content for clay, whereas 6% CKD was recommended for silt; the overall CBR value agreed with the UCS test. The reaction products calcium silicate hydrate and ettringite are the controlling mechanisms for the mechanical performance of CKD-stabilized sediments, whereas calcium aluminate hydrate is the control for lime-stabilized sediments. These results will contribute to the use of CKD as a sustainable and novel stabilizer for lime in highway material applications.
Recycling of industrial products as the stabilizers can be proper handling of industrial products and has positive side in terms of recycling of wastes. In this study, the final aims were to evaluate the usability as stabilizer of Bio-solids which was generated from contaminated soil with heavy metals after primary process and to compare the treatment efficiency with slag being currently applied in many existing sites. Soluble and exchangeable forms have closely related to pollution of groundwater and plant growth and they can be used to determine the effect of the stabilization efficiency. Slag and Bio-solids were tested to investigate the capacity of stabilizing arsenic. Slag treatment process 4 (PS-ball 5%) showed higher leachate concentration rather to 0.84% compared to treatment 1 (blank) based on an average of 0.63%. The other hand treatment 4 (Bio-solids 5%) showed the lowest soluble and exchangeable forms to 0.57% when Bio-solids was applied to stabilize arsenic. Thus, the leaching of arsenic will be more reduced if the Bio-solids are used as stabilizer in stead of slag which is being currently used in many fields.
This paper presents the engineering property of light weight soil made of soil mixed with recycled Styrofoam and stabilizer. Recycled Styrofoam is widely used for lightweight fill material because it has important geotechnical characteristics which are light, adiabatic, and effective for vibration interception. It is very easy to get the disposal styrofoam. For this study, dynamic compaction test, static compaction test and pH and leaching tests were performed. Based on the test results, it is concluded that the static compaction method is recommened to prevent from crushing materials and pH values of embankment materials are satisfied with these of domestic and RCRA configuration.

It has been reported that current amount of coal ash remains almost 100 million tons and 5.85 million tons of blast furnace slag are generated annually in Vietnam. Vietnam government has encouraged the industries to increase the use of coal ash and blast furnace slag as construction materials as well as in cement production institutionally. However, limited can be applied in the construction field yet. Therefore, in this study, basic performance analysis on five different kinds of fly ash from Vietnam was conducted. In addition, the performances of blast furnace slags generated in Vietnam and Korea were compared and evaluated. Soil stabilizer compressive strength test and solidified soil unconfined compressive strength test were conducted as the basic data for the development of soil stabilizer applied to the soil mixing method using fly ash and blast furnace slag generated in Vietnam. The results showed that the Vietnamese fly ash and blast furnace slag can be used as the raw materials for soil stabilization and improvement.
In the South Korea, 47% of abandoned mines are suffering from the mining hazards such as the mine drainage (MD), the mine tailings and the waste rocks. Among them the mine drainage which has a low pH and the high concentration of heavy metals can directly contaminate rivers or soil and cause serious damages to human health. The natural/artificial treatment facilities by using neutralizers and coagulants for the mine drainage have been operated in domestic and most of heavy metals in mind drainage are precipitated and removed in the form of metal hydroxide, alumino-silicate or carbonate, generating a large amount of mine drainage treated sludge ('MDS' hereafter) by-product. The MDS has a large surface area and many functional groups, showing high efficiency on the fixation of heavy metals. The purpose of this study is to develop a ingenious heavy metal stabilizer that can effectively stabilize arsenic (As) and heavy metals in soil by recycling the MDS (two types of MDS: the acid mine drainage treated sludge (MMDS) and the coal mine drainage treated sludge (CMDS)). Various analyses, toxicity evaluations, and leaching reduction batch experiments were performed to identify the characteristics of MDS as the stabilizer for soils contaminated with As and heavy metals. As a result of batch experiments, the Pb stabilization efficiency of both of MDSs for soil A was higher than 90% and their Zn stabilization efficiencies were higher than 70%. In the case of soil B and C, which were contaminated with As, their As stabilization efficiencies were higher than 80%. Experimental results suggested that both of MDSs could be successfully applied for the As and heavy metal contaminated soil as the soil stabilizer, because of their low unit price and high stabilization efficiency for As and hevry metals.
