Factors affecting the electrical properties of bentonite slurry were identified and electric conduction mechanism in slurry was examined. Electrical conductivity of bentonite and soil-bentonite slurry linearly increases with the bentonite content. Test result indicated that the change In electrical conductivity of slurry was mainly caused by dissolved cations from bentonite particles. The relationship between electrical conductivity and bentonite content was affected by the initial electrical conductivity of slurry solution and fine content in soil-bentonite mixture. Such influences were evaluated and the calibrated relationships were suggested. Based on the suggested relationship between electrical conductivity and bentonite content, bentonite content in various bentonite and soil-bentonite slurry can be quantitatively evaluated by using electrical conductivity measurement method.
Estimating the electrical conductivity of the saturation-paste (SP) is a common method to assess soil salinity. To assess soil salinity realistically, it is important to extract soil solution under field capacity. However, few studies on salinity assessment have been conducted for soil solution extracted under field capacity (-33 kPa; FC) moisture condition due to difficulty in soil solution extraction. This study was conducted to evaluate whether saturation-paste can represent field condition. Soil solutions were extracted from 22 soils in the plastic film house (PFH) and 18 soils in the reclaimed land (RL) at saturation and field capacity moisture conditions. Those were analyzed for pH, EC, cations ($K^+$, $Ca^{2+}$, $Mg^{2+}$, $Na^+$) and anions ($Cl^-$, ${NO_3}^-$, ${PO_4}^{3-}$, ${SO_4}^{2-}$). Both cations and anions of soil solution extracted from FC showed high correlations with ions extracted from SP in the PFH and the RL, except for ${NO_3}^-$, ${PO_4}^{3-}$ in the RL. Results of the t-test, the ECe and $EC_{FC}$ were not significant at significance level 0.05. The slopes of the equations between $EC_{FC}$ and ECe at more than sand 50% soils were higher than less than sand 50% soils, and differences of saturation percentage between SP and FC showed larger as increasing sand percentage. EC was related to soil water retention by soil texture. To determine the EC, soil texture and other soil properties which effect the soil moisture should be considered.
Monitoring solute transport has been known to be difficult especially for the unsaturated soil. The object of this study is to investigate the TDR application to monitoring solute concentration in the vadose zone. The TDR calibration test was conducted for soil samples with various water contents and concentrations. The voltage attenuation of electromagnetic wave of TDR was used to estimate the bulk electrical conductivity of a soil. The relationship between the bulk soil electrical conductivity and the solute concentration was assumed to be linear at a constant volumetric soil water content. In this study four proposed relationships were compared using data obtained from KCI solution at three different concentrations. Relationships given by Topp, Daltaon, Yanuka showed the linearity between the bulk soil electrical conductivity and the solute concentration, which were more pronounced than Zegelin's. The three relationships were found to be useful to measure the solute concentration in the vadose zone. In addition, TDR method was proven to be a viable technique in monitoring solute transport through unsaturated soils in transient flow condition.
Effect of Nutrient Concentrations, fertigation frequency, and learching percentage on crop growth and nutrient concentrations in root media were evaluated. The treatment of each irrigation with $50 mg.L^{-1}$ of nitrogen in stage 2 and increase to $80 mg.L^{-1}$ nitrogen in stage 3 had the highest crop growth at 34 days after sowing among treatments tested. Feeding with low nutrient concentrations and elevated frequency decreased crop growth. In treatments of each leaching percentage, feeding with low nutrient concentrations and elevated frequency resulted in increased tissue nutrient contents. The less tissue potassium content and higher calcium and magnesium contents were observed in treatment of 50% leach than those in 0% leach. All treatment tested had soil solution pH higher than 6.8. Electrical conductivity in treatments of 50% leach were lower than those of 0% leach. Feeding with low nutrient concentrations and elevated feeding frequency in each leaching percentage resulted in increased electrical conductivity in soil solution of root media. Trends of medium nutrient concentrations were similar to those of electrical conductivity.

In this study, the fly ash was employed as a possible alternative to the bentonite for its high sorption capacity against cationic heavy metal. To consider the constituents of barrier possibly used, the specimens were mixed with different material contents (fly ash : weathered soil : bentonite), then sorption test was performed. Also the specimens were molded on the wet side of optimum moisture contents like mixing ratio of sorption test and their hydraulic conductivities were measured in flexible-wall permeameters. And to confirm the effect of dissolved cations, the hydraulic conductivity tests were repeated by converting the permeant liquids from water to $Cd^{2+}$ solution. Finally, the Cd-concentration at the effluent was analyzed for 500hrs to compare the effectiveness of each specimen in contaminant retardation. Test results showed that the more the ratio of fly ash increase, the more Kd value increase, and the hydraulic conductivity of weathered soil/bentonite (95:5) mixture was the lowest $(2.9*10^{-8}cm/sec)$, and specimens made of fly ash and fly ash/weathered soil mixtures showed similar hydraulic conductivity. Although the permeant liquid was changed from water to $Cd^{2+}$ solution, the hydraulic conductivity of all specimens except for weathered soil maintained similarly like before. Consequently, the initial breakthrough point of Cd in weathered soil specimen was observed at about 5hrs after the test started while that of fly ash specimens was not observed during the whole test period of 500hrs. The results implied that fly ash had a sufficient retardation capacity against contaminant transport possibly by its high sorption capacity although it showed little effect on the reduction of hydraulic conductivity. Based on the test results, it could be concluded that the fly ash can be possibly used as a suitable barrier material in containment system to attenuate the contaminant transport for its high retardation capacity and for the low cost.
Time domain reflectometry (TDR) is a newly developed method for measuring simultaneously solute concentrations and volumetric water content of soil. Bulk electrical conductivity ($EC_a$) of soil is obtained from TDR signal using several equations proposed, and electrical conductivity of soil solution ($EC_w$) can be calculated using the linear relationship $EC_a=EC_w\theta(a\theta+b)+EC_s$ between $EC_a$ and $EC_w$ at constant soil water content. The objectives of this study were to evaluate $EC_a$ proposed by several workers and to obtain the empirical constants (a, b, and $EC_s$) for $EC_w$ of the soils from A, Bl, and B2 horizon of an agricultural field (Coarse loamy, Fluvaquentic Eutrudepts). The $EC_a$ proposed by Yanuka et al. responded most sensitively to the KCl solute concentrations. The empirical constants of a, b, and $EC_s$ for $EC_w$ were -0.249, 1.358, and 0.054 for A horizon, -2.518, 2.708, and 0.097 for Bl horizon, and 2.490, -0.250, and 0.103 for B2 horizon, respectively. Therefore, the results of this study showed that Yanuka et al. equation was most useful one in determining $EC_a$, from TDR signal for agricultural soil with low salinity and that the empirical constants for the calculation of $EC_w$, from $EC_a$ can be obtained through a simple calibration experiment.
This study was carried out to analyze the characteristics of pH and electrical conductivity(EC) at each stand and soil depth by the artificial acid rain sprinkling in the upper watershed of Mt. Palgong and furthermore to clarify the relationships between forest soil and water purification function. The results obtained in the experimental sites of Quercus acutissima and Larix leptolepis were summarized as follows ; 1. The average soil pH at each soil layer(0~5cm, 0~10cm, 0~20cm in depth) were 4.8, 4.3 and 4.5 for the Quercus acutissima soil and 5.15, 5.19 and 5.21 for the Larix leptolepis soil. The soil pH of Larix leptolepis stand was higher than that of Quercus acutissima stand. In addition, the deeper soil depth was, the higher soil pH was. 2. The soil solution pH of Larix leptolepis stand was higher than that of Quercus acutissima stand. It was due to the high soil pH of Larix leptolepis stand itself and the difference of humus layer thickness. 3. It took time to show the pH buffer capacity of forest soil after application of artificial acid rain in the forest soil. The pH value of soil solution in each experimental site was maximum at this time and then did not increase pH value any more. 4. Soil solution EC increased slowly with pH 3.0 treatment, but it decreased slowly with pH 5.0 treatment over time. It was assumed that the amount of the leached cation and the ions leading buffer action changed at the stands with ranges of acidity treatment. 5. From the trend of soil solution EC at each soil depth, it seemed that the water buffer capacity of the forest soil increased as the soil depth increased.
Gray mold caused by Botrytis cinerea on strawberry plants is an economically significant disease in Korea. The rates for diseased fruits are high during the strawberry harvesting period from December to February, especially in hydroponic cultivation. This study assessed the effect of the nitrogen type in the soil culture and the electrical conductivity (EC) of the nutrient solution in a hydroponic culture on the gray mold incidence in 'Seolhyang' strawberry plants. The nitrogen sources assayed included calcium nitrate tetrahydrate (CN4), calcium nitrate decahydrate (CN10), ammonium sulfate (AS), and commercial fertilizer 213 (213). The effect of the EC was tested at 0.5, 0.8, 1.0, and $1.5dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$. The occurrence of gray mold varied according to the nitrogen type. The disease incidence and nitrogen content for the main nitrogen type were higher compared to the non-treated control. The AS treatment showed the highest occurrence of tipburn and gray mold. The incidence of gray mold as well as the nitrogen and phosphorus content of the leaves increased as the EC level was increased. These results indicate that the incidence of gray mold in strawberry plants is related to the nitrogen content of the leaf and the EC of the nutrient solution.
This study was carried out easily to determine the refreshing time of natural Zeolite used for the clearing of Livestock waste water and to investigate the relationship between EC of solution and adsorption amount on Zeolite. During the adsorption reaction, EC of supernatant solution decreased till the equilibrium was reached and kept a constant level after it. EC was greatly decreased with the concentration of solution and the magnitude of adsorbent. Decrease in EC of suspension was found to be lesser in addition of Na-Zeolite than Ca-Zeolite. EC change of Livestock waste water was shown to be similar tendency to that of the simulated waste water. On the cumulative adsorption isotherm, the EC of suspension increased until the EC value of the initial solution as the increase in treatment times. Therefore, it is apparent that the exchange point of natural zeolite should be in the vicinity of the EC value of initial waste water.

The objectives of this study were to monitor the changes in soil solution nutrients and to evaluate their effect on rice uptake and yield. The changes of chemical characteristics of paddy soil solution were examined from the 58th fertilization experiment in which the continuous rice cropping experiment started in 1954 at the National Academy of Agricultural Science. The treatments were no fertilization (No fert.), inorganic fertilization (NPK), inorganic fertilizer plus rice straw compost (NPKC) and inorganic fertilizer plus silicate and lime fertilizer as a soil amendment (NPKCLS). The fertilizers were added at rates of standard fertilizer application rate in which nitrogen (N), phosphate ($P_2O_5$), potassium ($K_2O$), and sililcate ($SiO_2$) were applied at rates of $75{\sim}150kg\;ha^{-1}$, $70{\sim}86kg\;ha^{-1}$, $75{\sim}86kg\;ha^{-1}$, and $7.5Mg\;ha^{-1}$ respectively and lime was applied to neutralize soil acidity until 6.5. Average Electrical Conductivity (EC) of soil solution in NPKCLS and NPKC ranged from 1.16 to $2.00dS\;m^{-1}$. The $NH{_4}^+$ and $K^+$ levels in NPKCLS and NPKC were higher than that of the other treatments, due to high supply power of rice straw compost. The content of $H_3SiO{_4}^-$ was higher in NPKCLS because of silicate application. The dominant ions in soil solution were $Ca^{2+}$, $Mg^{2+}$ and $Na^+$ among cations and $HCO{_3}^-$, $SO{_4}^{2-}$, and $Cl^-$ among anions in all treatments. The continuous application of inorganic fertilizers plus rice straw compost (NPKC) and silicate fertilizer (NPKCLS) led to the changes of various chemical composition in soil solutions. Also, they had a significant impact on the improvement of rice inorganic uptake and grain yield. Especially, inorganic uptake by rice in NPKC and NPKCLS significantly increased than those in NPK plot; 14~46% for T-N, 32~36% for P, 43~57% for K, and 45~77% for Si. Therefore, the combined application of inorganic fertilizers with organic compost as a soil amendment is considered as the best fertilization practice in the continuous rice cropping for the improvement of crop productivity and soil fertility.
