  • A field experiment was conducted to selection of ground-based remote sensor and reflectance indices to estimate rice production, estimation of suitable season for ground-based remote sensor and N top dressing fertilizer application rate in 2010. Fertilizer application was determined by "Fertilizer management standard for crops" (National Academy of Agricultural Science, 2006). Four levels of N-fertilizer were applied as 0%, 70%, 100% and 130% by base N-fertilizer application and were fertilized as 70% of basal dressing and 30% as top dressing. Rice (Oryza sativa L.) of Chucheong and Joonam (Korean cultivar) were planted on May 22, 2010 in sandy loam soil and harvested on October 6, 2010. Reflectance indices were measured 7 times from July 5 to August 23 by Crop circle-amber and red version and GreenSeeker-green and red version. Remote sensing angle from the sensor head to the canopy of rice was adjusted to $45^{\circ}$, $70^{\circ}$ and $90^{\circ}$ degree because of difference in the density of plant and the sensing angle. The reflectance indices obtained ground-based remote sensor were correlated with the biomass of rice at the early growth stage and at the harvest with $70^{\circ}$ and $90^{\circ}$ degree of sensor angle. The reflectance indices at the 52th Day After Transplanting (DAT) and the 59th DAT, critical season, were positively correlated with dry weight and nitrogen uptake. Specially NDVI at the 59th was significantly correlated with the mentioned parameters. Based on the result of this study, rNDVI by GreenSeeker on $70^{\circ}$ degree of angle at the 59th DAT in Chucheong and rNDVI by Crop Circle on $70^{\circ}$ degree of angle and gNDVI by GreenSeeker on $70^{\circ}$ degree of angle at the 59th DAT in Joonam can be useful for estimation of dry weight and nitrogen uptake. Moreover, sufficiency index estimated by reflectance index at the 59th DAT can be useful for the estimation of N-fertilizer level application and can be used as a model for N-top dressing fertilizer management.

  • The GOCI imagery can be an effective alternative to monitor short-term changes over terrestrial environments. This study aimed to assess the radiometric characteristics of the GOCI multispectral imagery for land applications. As an initial approach, we compared GOCI at-sensor radiance with MODIS data obtained simultaneously. Dynamic range of GOCI radiance was larger than MODIS over land area. Further, the at-sensor radiance over various land surface targets were tested by vicarious calibration. Surface reflectance were directly measured in field using a portable spectrometer and indirectly derived from the atmospherically corrected MODIS product over relatively homogeneous sites of desert, tidal flat, bare soil, and fallow crop fields. The GOCI radiance values were then simulated by radiative transfer model (6S). In overall, simulated radiance were very similar to the actual radiance extracted from GOCI data. Normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) calculated from the GOCI bands 5 and 8 shows very close relationship with MODIS NDVI. In this study, the GOCI imagery has shown appropriate radiometric quality to be used for various land applications. Further works are needed to derive surface reflectance over land area after atmospheric correction.

  • This study was conducted to develop system for high speed rice transplanting machines. The control system includes a sensor detecting the tilt angle of the seedling bed, a micro-controller and a hydraulic system consisting of a double acting cylinder, a four-way three-position solenoid valve, a relief valve and a hydraulic pump. The levelling system shared the pump with the existing steering control, resulting in a tandem center circuit for the steering and levelling control systems. Using the input signal from the sensor, the micro-controller determined and generated the output signal to control the cylinder through the solenoid valve to keep the seedling bed always parallel to the water surface regardless of soil unevenness during the transplanting operations. Both an ON/OFF and a PWM control schemes were tested. When the flow rate was more than 1 ι/min in the ON/OFF control, the system showed unstable rolling. However, in the PWM control, the system worked stably although the flow rate was more than 1 ι/min. The PWM control showed a better performance when a large difference between the angle and the dead band of the control system occurred. The characteristics of tile system response to given tilt angles were predicted by a computer simulation. Both the ON/OFF and the PWM control systems worked well providing that the operating and waiting times were properly adjusted.

  • This study presents a paper on the implementation of a Raspberry Pi-based educational smart farm system. It confirms that in a real smart farm environment, the control of temperature, humidity, soil moisture, and light intensity can be smoothly managed. It also includes remote monitoring and control of sensor information through a web service. Additionally, information about intruders collected by the Pi camera is transmitted to the administrator. Although the cost of existing smart farms varies depending on the location, material, and type of installation, it costs 400 million won for polytunnel and 1.5 billion won for glass greenhouses when constructing 0.5ha (1,500 pyeong) on average. Nevertheless, among the problems of smart farms, there are lax locks, malfunctions to automation, and errors in smart farm sensors (power problems, etc.). We believe that this study can protect crops at low cost if it is complementarily used to improve the security and reliability of expensive smart farms. The cost of using this study is about 100,000 won, so it can be used inexpensively even when applied to the area. In addition, in the case of plant cultivators, cultivators with remote control functions are sold for more than 1 million won, so they can be used as low-cost plant cultivators.

  • To determine the critical level for optimum maturity of flue-cured tobacco leaves (KF118) at the stalk position from cutter to tips, the reflectance index using ground-based remote sensors and chlorophyll meter were investigated. The sensors estimated were Crop $Circle^{TM}$ (Holland Scientific), Green $Seeker^{TM}$ (Ntech Industries), Spectroradiometer (LICOR, LI-1800), Chlorophyll meter (SPAD502, Minolta), and Field $Scout^{TM}$ Chlorophyll meter (CM-1000, Spectrum). The L, a, b values and greenness for flue-cured leaf were measured and estimated for correlation with sensor's measurement of harvested leaf. On a reflectance curve of 340nm~1100 nm, the reflectance peaks on 550nm and 675 nm for the harvested leaf were lowered as change from light green to darker green. Darker green leaf harvested produced darker flue-cured leaf. The reflectance at 675 nm for flue-cured leaf decreased as greenness increased in the harvested leaf. This result means that the red edge band of 675 nm wavelength is related to the absorbance of chlorophyll for photosynthesis. The greenness of flue-cured leaf showed significantly positive correlation with the entire reflectance indexes for harvested leaf while the L value by colorimeter showed negative correlation with greenness of cured leaf. The critical level for optimum maturity of harvested leaf were less than 22, 135, and 0.43 for SPAD reading, CM-1000 reading, and gNDVI by Crop $Circle^{TM}$, respectively. Consequently, ground-based remote sensing providing a non-destructive real-time assessment of plant greenness could be a useful tool in the selection of optimum maturity of flue-cured tobacco leaves in relation to high quality of flue-cured tobacco.

  • Remote sensing technique in agriculture can be used to identify chlorophyll content, biomass, and yield caused from N stress level. This study was conducted to evaluate biomass, N stress levels, and yield of tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum L.) under sand culture in a plastic film house using ground-based remote sensors. Nitrogen rates applied were 40, 60, 80, 100, 120, and 140 percent of N concentration in the Hoagland's nutrient solution. Sensor readings for reflectance indices were taken at 30, 35, 40, 45, 50 and 60 days after transplanting(DAT). Reflectance indices measured at 40th DAT were highly correlated with dry weight(DW) of tobacco leaves and N uptake by leaves. Especially, green normalized difference vegetation index(gNDVI) from spectroradiometer and aNDVI from Crop Circle passive sensor were able to explain 85% and 84% of DW variability and 85% and 92% of N uptake variability, respectively. All the reflectance indices measured at each sampling date during the growing season were significantly correlated with tobacco yield. Especially the gNDVI derived from spectroradiometer readings at the 40th DAT explained 72% of yield variability. N rates of tobacco were distinguished by sufficiency index calculated using the ratio of reflectance indices of stress to optimum plot of N treatment. Consequently results indicate that the reflectance indices by ground-based remote sensor can be used to predict tobacco yield and recommend the optimum application rate of N fertilizer for top dressing of tobacco.

  • Recent Internet of Things (IoT, Internet of Things) that can be applied to various fields as the development of technology has been developed a lot of service and has been developed with the service also for crop management. To manage the essential elements of soil moisture in the crop growth but existing a direct person measuring the fluid point to carry the measuring instrument, if you take advantage of the WPAN (Wireless Personal Area Network) in this paper to manage sensor data, a fixed 3 points (30, 60, 90 cm) and can be managed can be scientifically analyzed the state of growth of the crop. Open field environment is utilized as it is less disturbance of the interference and the frequency of the radio frequency signal of the structure provides a relatively comfortable environment. Therefore, WPAN building and data transmission scheme of the minimum cost is to be developed. In addition, the operation to enter low power mode, the algorithm is necessary because a lot of restrictions on the power supply applied to the sensor nodes and the gateway is constructed in the open field. In the experiment, verifying the effectiveness by using a network configuration of each of the sensor nodes and the gateway, and provides a method for time synchronization of the operation and a low power mode. The study protocol for the RF communication with the LoRa and to enhance communication efficiency is needed in the future.

  • Measurement of electrical resistivity in soils has been used for many years with purpose of estimating in situ porosity or density. Recently electrical resistivity has also been used as an indicator of soil contaimination. This paper presents the result of laboratory experiment to investigate the resistivity variation in contaminated sandy soils. The results can be used with the Cone Penetrometer Test (CPT) result to analyse ground condition. In the experiment, the water content and leachate concentration of soils were controlled by groundwater and leachate, and then the resistivity measurement was made with 'STING-R1' by Advanced Geosciences Inc. In the case of using groundwater, the resistivity was in the range of over 1000${\omega}{\cdot}m$, but in the case of using polluted water by leachate, the resistivity decreased significantly down to 10~ 100${\omega}{\cdot}m$ for the same moisture content. Also the resistivity varied according to the degree of saturatrion. Therefore, if soil is contaminated by leachate, the CPT with electrical resistivity sensor might be used to investigate the contamination status and plume migration. But exact component of leachate and the pollutant concentration are still hard to identify.

  • Abstract: In teleoperation field robotic system such as hydraulically actuated robotic excavator, the maneuverability and convenience is the most important part in the operation of robotic excavator. Particularly the force information is important in dealing with digging and leveling operation in the teleoperated excavator. Excavators are also subject to a wide variation of soil-tool interaction forces. This paper presents a new force reflecting joystick in a velocity-force type bilateral teleoperation system. The master system is electrical joystick and the slave system IS hydraulically actuated cylinder with linear position sensor. Particularly Pneumatic motor is used newly in the master joystick for force reflection and the information of the pressure of salve cylinder is measured and utilized as the force feedback signal. Also force-reflection gain greatly affects the excavation performance of a hydraulically actuated robotic system and it is very difficult to determine it appropriately since slave excavator contacts with various environments such as from soft soil to rock. To overcome this, this paper proposes a force-reflection gain selecting algorithm based on artificial neural network and fuzzy logic.
