This experiment was done to evaluate the effects of green manure cropping in green house soil on the changes of soil nutrients and soil microorganisms. The biomass of green manure crop was the highest in ryegrass and nitrogen absorption was the highest in hairy vetch. After cropping, soil phosphate content was the lowest in ryegrass, however, biomass C was the highest of all the green manures. Nitrogen uptake of plant and nitrogen content of the soil after the experiment showed a negative correlation. Total N content of soil was increased in hairy vetch plot, but decreasing tendency showed in the ryegrass and common crabgrass plots. In this results are summarized that green manure cropping greatly reduced salt accumulation in green house.
In order to observe the factors affecting light utilization efficiency in the canopy of a rice crop grown in reclaimed saline areas in Korea, 22 varieties of rice were cultured at the average salt concentration of 6.05mmhos/cm $25^{\circ}C$, (0.39%) in saline soils and non-saline silty loam soils. The inhibition of tillering ability by salt damage at the maximum tillering stage was greater than to growth in height. A significant direct correlation was observed between both ratios and salt concentration with each variety. In the salty areas the length of the flag leaf of the maturing stage showed a positive correlation with the production of rough rice while other living leaf showed a negative correlation. LAI of maturing stage was less in the salty area than in the non-salty area, while the former showed higher ratio in net assimilation and translocation to head with greater RGR before and after the heading stage.
In order to investigate the possibility of sugar beet culture in reclaimed area of our country and the salt tolerance of sugar beet, a variety Kawemegapoly was used for experimentation in plots of various salt concentration arranged in Kimpo reclaimed area located at Kyongkido Province. The salt concentration of cultivating layer of the field in the west coast of Korea began to decline from the middle of June and rises again in the middle of October growing season of sugar beet as generally seen in relaimed paddy fields of Korea. The soil of less than 0.5% salt concentration is most suitable for the culture of sugar beet has bery strong salt tolerance. The sugar accumulation of sugar beet in each plot declined once in the middle part or in latter September and began to proceed again from the early of October. Such temporary retrocession of sugar accumulation was observed.

The mechanical behavior of granular soils is affected by particle bonding including natural cementation. This study addresses a simple model of small strain stiffness and salt concentration based on wave measurements of salt-cemented particulate media. Published models of artificially cemented soils with different curing methods and several types of cementation agents are reviewed. Glass beads with the median diameter of D50 = 0.5mm are prepared in rectangular cells using the water-pluviated method in salt water with different concentrations. Piezo disk elements and bender elements embedded in the cell are used for the measurements of compressional and shear waves. The relationships between elastic wave velocities and salt concentration show an exponential function. The measured small strain stiffness matches well the predicted small strain stiffness based on micromechanics for simple cubic monosized sphere particles. This study demonstrates that the salt concentration in salt-cemented specimen may be evaluated by using elastic wave velocities.

Plants suffer from various abiotic stresses among them; soil salinity is one of major adverse factor in declining agricultural productivity. So, development of salt stress tolerance crops have potential role to increase crop production. The RING finger proteins are known to play crucial roles in abiotic stress environment to plants. In this study, we identified one Salt-responsive Really${\underline{I}nteresting}$${\underline{n}ew}$${\underline{g}ene}$ (RING) E3 ubiquitin ligase gene OsSIRF1 from rice root tissues during salt stress and studied its molecular function. Expression of OsSIRF1 was induced under various abiotic stress conditions, including salt, heat, drought, and ABA. Result of an in vitro ubiquitination assay clearly showed that OsSIRF1 Possess an E3 ligase activity. Moreover, OsSIRF1 was found to be localized to the nucleus within the cell. Heterogeneous overexpression of OsSIRF1 in Arabidopsis improved seed germination and increased root length under salt and Manitol stress conditions. Taking together, these results suggested that OsSIRF1 may be associated with plant responses to abiotic stressors and positively regulates salt and osmotic stress environment.
Increasing atmospheric $CO_2$ affects the soil carbon cycle by influencing microbial activity and the carbon pool. In this study, the effects of elevated $CO_2$ on extracellular enzyme activities (EEA; ${\beta}$-glucosidase, N-acetylglucosaminidase, aminopeptidase) in salt marsh sediment vegetated with Suaeda japonica were assessed under ambient atmospheric $CO_2$ concentration (380 ppm) or elevated $CO_2$ concentration (760 ppm) conditions. Additionally, the community structure of sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) was analyzed via terminal restriction fragments length polymorphism (T-RFLP). Sediment with S. japonica samples were collected from the Hwangsando intertidal flat in May 2005, and placed in small pots (diameter 6 cm, height 10 cm). The pots were incubated for 60 days in a growth chamber under two different $CO_2$ concentration conditions. Sediment samples for all measurements were subdivided into two parts: surface (0-2 cm) and rhizome (4-6 cm) soils. No significant differences were detected in EEA with different $CO_2$ treatments in the surface and rhizome soils. However, the ratio of ${\beta}$-glucosidase activity to N-acetylglucosaminidase activity in rhizome soil was significantly lower (P < 0.01) at 760 ppm $CO_2$ than at 380 ppm $CO_2$, thereby suggesting that the contribution of fungi to the decomposition of soil organic matter might in some cases prove larger than that of bacteria. Community structures of SRB were separated according to different $CO_2$ treatments, suggesting that elevated $CO_2$ may affect the carbon and sulfur cycle in salt marshes.

Cowpea [Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walp] is one of the most important grain legumes that enhance soil fertility and is well-adapted to various abiotic stress. Also, it is cultivated worldwide as a tropical annual crop, and the semi-arid regions are known as the main cowpea-produced regions. However, accumulation of soil salinity induced by low rainfall in these regions is reducing crop yields and quality. In general, plants exposed to soil salinity cause an accumulation of high ion chloride, which leads to the degradation of root and leaf proteins. In this study, we identified candidate genes associated with salinity tolerance through an analysis of differentially expressed genes (DEGs) in four cowpea germplasms with contrasting salinity tolerance. A total of 553,776,035 short reads were obtained using the Illumina Novaseq 6000 platform for RNA-Seq, which were subsequently aligned to the reference genome of cowpea Vunguiculata v1.2. A total of9,806 DEGs were identified between NaCl treatment and control of four cowpea germplasms. Among these DEGs, functions related to salt stress such as calcium transporter and cytochrome-450 family were associated with salt stress. In GO analysis and KEGG analysis, these DEGs were enriched in terms such as the "phosphorylation", ''extracellular region", and "ion binding". These RNA-seq results will improve the understanding of the salt tolerance of cowpea and can be used as useful basic data for molecular breeding technology in the future.
In Australia, many cropping areas are affected by salt. In these regions, Chenopodiaceous plants, such as Atriplex, Kochia and Bassia spp have been planted to improve soil conditions. These plants have become invaluable feed resources for grazing animals in dry summers, but have a high sodium content. To assess the impact of high salt intake on grazing deer, two experiments were conducted. The first experiment used 30 fallow weaner deer to examine the effect of salt level in the diet on feed intake, water intake and body weight of fallow deer. Salt was added to lucerne chaff at 0, 1.5, 3.0, 4.5 and 6% and fresh water was offered all the time. Increasing the salt level in the diet from 0 to 6% didn't affect feed intake, osmotic pressure and mineral concentration in blood of fallow deer. However, water intake was significantly higher (p<0.05) in deer fed diets containing more than 3% salt. Body weight was lower (p${\leq}$0.056) for fallow deer in July and August when salt content was over 3%, suggesting they can ingest over 15 g sodium/day without significant depression in both feed intake and growth rate if the fresh water is available. In the second experiment, 18 red weaner deer were fed lucerne chaff diets containing 1.5, 4.5 and 6.0% salt with 6 deer/diet. The results revealed that feed intake and blood osmotic pressure were similar (p>0.05) for red deer fed different levels of salt although the feed intake declined from 1.91 to 1.67 kg with the increase of salt level from 1.5% to 6.0% in the diet. Water intake was significantly higher for deer fed diets containing over 4.5% salt, but there was no difference in body weight during the experiment. However, no recommendation can be made on the salt tolerance of red deer due to limited increment of salt level in the diet.
This study was carried out to apply basic data of the native trees for planting in the salinity area by the vegetation ecological selection. Which focused on native woody species to the tolerances of saline soil and salt spray drift on the coastal forests in the West-Sea, Korea. The soil salinity($EC_{1:5}$) was 0.11dS$m^{-1}$, ranging of 0.00dS$m^{-1}$~0.68dS$m^{-1}$. The soil salinity was gradually decreasing from Belt I to Belt Ⅳ except the Belt I in some coastal windbreaks. The order of decreasing soil salinity was Belt I>Belt II>Belt III>Belt Ⅳ and the soil salinity was $EC_{1:5}$ 0.14dS$m^{-1}$, 0.11dS$m^{-1}$, 0.10dS$m^{-1}$, and 0.08dS$m^{-1}$, respectively. The total 181 taxa consisted of 52 families, 104 genus, 157 species, and 24 varieties were recorded as the trees tolerating to both soil salinity and salt spray drift. The trees emerged in the highest degree of salinity($EC_{1:5}$ 0.51dS$m^{-1}$) was nothing but appearanced Pinus thunbergii Parl., Smilax china L., Quercus dentata Thunb. ex Murray, Quercus serrata Thunb. ex Murray and so on at the level of singular and ideal value. The emerged trees in the high salinity of $EC_{1:5}$0.41dS$m^{-1}$~0.50dS$m^{-1}$ were Albizia kalkora Prain, Melia azedarach L., Paederia scandens (Lour.) Merr. var. scandens These species were trees of tolerance to saline soil. The emerged woody species in all belts were Pinus rigida Mill., Pinus densiflora Siebold & Zucc., Pinus thunbergii Parl., Juniperus rigida Siebold & Zucc. and so on. The woody species with high important value(I.V.) were Pinus densiflora Siebold & Zucc., Pinus thunbergii Parl., Pseudosasa japonica (Siebold & Zucc. ex Steud.) Makino, Smilax china L., Platycarya strobilacea Siebold & Zucc. var. strobilacea for. strobilacea and so on, which can be classified as highly tolerant native trees to salt spray drift.

Laboratory experiments were conducted to study the effects of pH and salt level on the soil sorption equilibrium of pentachlorophenol (PCP) which is hydrophobic and ionogenic. Experimental results indicated that the sorption equilibrium constant (Kp) of PCP increased with decreasing pH. A quantitative sorption model involving linear isotherms was estabilished to predict the pH effect on the PCP sorption equilibrium over the pH range from 3 to 8. The model prediction was in good agreement with the experimental data. Also, the Kp increased with salt concentration over the entire pH range. At added salt levels less than 0.1M, increase in Kp was larger than when the added levels were higher than 0.1M. Salt might increase the PCP sorption by inducing 'salting out-effect' or by forming deprotonated PCP-cation ion pairs such as PCP$\^$-/K$\^$+/. Taking the pH range (5-8) and the salt content (up to 50 g/L) in the groundwater of Metropolitan landfill sites into consideration, the results indicated that the retardation factor of PCP in this area might range from 3 to 550 depending upon pH and salt content.
