The aim of the work described in this paper is to develope a pavement method for farm road. To this ends, a series of material test are conducted on in-situ soil which was mixed additives-coarse aggregate, polypropylene fiber, excellent soil compound etc. With the laboratory test results, in-situ pavement test was conducted during two years. The serious problem of the pavement is not appeared up to this time. And the measurement of field data is continued presently. The majority merits of this pavement method is low cost and using environmental materials.
PURPOSES : The purpose of this study is to determine the optimum addition rate of SBR latex through the evaluation of durability and strength of SBR latex applied soil pavement. Formerly used materials such as fly ash and cement in soil pavement had resulted in decreased durability due to micro crack by heat of hydration and shrinkage crack in winter. However, that agglutinated polymers help adhesion to aggregate increased comes up with preventing the crack opening when the number of capillary tubes of SBR latex get decreased in the hydration process of cement. Therefore, in this study, it is suggested that the evaluation of the field applicability of soil pavement be conducted through the performance lab test in terms of strength increment, adhesion improvement, and crack resistance based on SBR latex addition rate. METHODS : In order to evaluate the field applicability of soil pavement, SBR latex was added 0 to 3% by 1% increment, with fixed cement contents of 3% and 5%. The resistance of shear failure and crack of soil pavement were evaluated by performing the uniaxial compressive strength test and indirect tensile strength test at -20 and $20^{\circ}C$, respectively. RESULTSCONCLUSIONS : It was found out that from both tests, resistance of shear failure and crack were improved with increment of curing time, and especially more than 2% of SBR latex addition rate and 5% cement content gave better results.
In this search, by evaluating the field applicability of soil mixed pavement of Red mud is mixed into the soil mixed pavement field applicability, and tries to present the basic data about the site application of recycling of red mud and low carbon construction material to. As a result, the conventional soil concrete organization standards (SPS-KSCICO-001: 2003) meets the criteria for parking lot, making use of red mud, natural color as well as the natural loess is expressed.
Decrease in availability of suitable subbase and base course materials for highway construction leads to a search for economic method of converting locally available troublesome soil to suitable one for highway construction. Present study insights on evaluation of benefits of stabilization of subgrade soils in term of extension in service life (TBR) and layer thickness reduction (LTR). Laboratory investigation consisting of Atterberg limit, Compaction, California Bearing Ratio, unconfined compressive strength and triaxial shear strength tests were carried out on two types of soil for varying percentages of stabilizers. Vertical compressive strains at the top of unstabilized and stabilized subgrade soils were found out by elastoplastic finite element analysis using commercial software ANSYS. The values of vertical compressive strains at the top of unstabilized and stabilized subgrade, were further used to estimate layer thickness reduction or extension in service life of the pavement due to stabilization. Finite element modeling of the flexible pavement layered structure provides modern technology and sophisticated characterization of materials that can be accommodated in the analysis and enhances the reliability for the prediction of pavement response for improved design methodology. If the pavement section is kept same for unstabilized and stabilized subgrade soils, pavement resting on lime, fly ash and fiber stabilized subgrade soil B will have service life 2.84, 1.84 and 1.67 times than that of unstabilized pavement respectively. The flexible pavement resting on stabilized subgrade is beneficial in reducing the construction material. Actual savings would depend on the option exercised by the designer for reducing the thickness of an individual layer.
This paper reports a case study of aboutment displacement and pavement settlement observed at the construction site for highway bridges. The emphasis was on quantifying the horizontal deflections of about and pavement settlement on the backfill surface. It is shown that in soft clay, bridge aboutments on pile foundations are subjected to lateral earth pressures due to lateral soil movement. Based on the results analyzed, the earth pressure was predicted by deflection shape of piles based on the results of a numerical analysis and an analytical study. Also, the long term settlement of soil below pavement was estimated.
PURPOSES : Hollows are easily made, and bearing capacity can be lowered near underground structures because sublayers of pavement settle for a long time due to difficult compaction at the position. If loadings are applied in this condition, distresses may occur in pavement and, as the result, its lifespan can decrease due to the stress larger than that expected in design phase. Although reinforced slab is installed on side of box culvert to minimize the distresses, length of the reinforced slab is fixed as 6m in Korea without any theoretical consideration. The purpose of this paper is investigating the behavior of concrete pavement according to the cover depth of the box culvert ad the length of the reinforced slab. METHODS : The distresses of concrete pavement slabs were investigated and cover depth was surveyed at position where the box culverts were located in expressways. The concrete pavements including the box culverts were modeled by finite element method and their behaviors according to the soil cover depth were analyzed. Wheel loading was applied after considering self weight of the pavement and temperature gradient of the concrete pavement slab at Yeojoo, Gyeonggi where a test road was located. After installing pavement joint at various positions, behavior of the pavement was analyzed by changing the soil cover depth and length of the reinforced slab. RESULTS : As the result, the tensile stress developed in the pavement slab according to the joint position, cover depth, and reinforced slab length was figured out. CONCLUSIONS : More reasonable and economic design of the concrete pavement including the box culvert is expected by the research results.
Red mud is an inorganic by-product produced from the mineral processing of alumina from Bauxite ores. the development of alkali-activated slag-red mud cement can be a representative study aimed at recycling the strong alkali of the red mud as a construction material. This study is to investigate the pore characteristics of alkali-activated slag-red mud soil pavement according to the red mud content. The results showed that the porosity of alkali-activated slag-red mud soil pavement increased but the compressive strength of that decreased as the red mud content increased.
This paper presents laboratory investigation of stabilization of subgrade soil. One type of soil and three types of stabilizers i.e., hydrated lime, class F fly ash and polypropylene fibres are selected in the study. Atterberg limit, compaction, california bearing ratio (CBR), unconfined compressive strength and triaxial shear strength tests are conducted on unstabilized and stabilized soil for varying percentage of stabilizers to analyze the effect of stabilizers on the properties of soil. Vertical compressive strains at the top of unstabilized and stabilized subgrade soil were found out by elasto-plastic finite element analysis using commercial software ANSYS. Strategy for design of optimum pavement section was based on extension in service life (TBR) and reduction in layer thickness (LTR). Extension in service life of stabilized subgrade soil is 6.49, 4.37 and 3.26 times more due to lime, fly ash and fibre stabilization respectively. For a given service life of the pavement, there is considerable reduction in layer thicknesses due to stabilization. It helps in reduction in construction cost of pavement and saving in natural resources as well.
Recently, for industrial development period, concrete structures in domestics have been increased. They were deteriorated by attack of carbonation, freeze-thaw and corrosion etc. In hence they were demolished and reconstructed, resulted in waste concrete particles. In this paper, waste concrete particles (WCP) by product from different crushing and selecting process were used in soil cement-based pavement in the various recycling. For using WCP in soil cement-based pavement, the Qualities, physical and chemical properties, of WCP should be researched. In the first step, the specified compressive strength of mortar for two types of clay sand soil and clay soil respectively was experimented to be 15 Mpa and then optimum mixing ratio of chemical solidification agent were decided in the range of $1.5\~3.0\%$ in the replacement with cement weight content. In the second step, based on the prior experimental results, recycling possibility of WCP in soil cement-based pavement was studied. In the result of experiment the mixing ratio of WCP were 5, 10, 15 and $20\%$ in the replacement with soil weight and the compressive strength of mortar was somewhat decreased according to the increase of the mixing ratio of WCP.
PURPOSES : It is to evaluate lightweight soil as a subgrade material based on mechanical tests and calculation of pavement performance. METHODS : In this research, various contents of cement and air foam are used to make lightweight soil using wasted dredged soil. Uniaxial compressive strength test is conducted to evaluate strength of 7 and 28 day cured specimens. Secant modulus was calculated based on the stress and strain relationship of uniaxial compressive strength test. Resilient modulus test was measured using by repeated triaxial compression test. The measured resilient modulus was used in layered elastic program to predict fatigue and rutting life at a given pavement structure. RESULTS : Uniaxial compressive strength increases as cement content increases but decrease as air foam content increases. Resilient modulus also increases as cement content increases and decrease as air foam content decrease. CONCLUSIONS : It is concluded that dredge clay soil can be used as subgrade layer material using by lightweight treated soil method.
