The bearing mechanism of pile during installation and loading process which controls the deformation and distribution of strain and stress in the soil surrounding pile tip is complex and full of much uncertainty. It is pointed out that particle crushing occurs in significant stress concentrated region such as the area surrounding pile tip. The solution to this problem requires the understanding and modeling of the mechanical behavior of granular soil under high pressures. This study aims to investigate the sand behavior around pile tip considering the characteristics of sand crushing. The numerical analysis of model pile loading test under different surcharge pressure with constitutive model for sand crushing is presented. This constitutive model is capable of predicting the dilatancy of soil from negative to positive under low confining pressure and only negative dilatancy under high confining pressure. The predicted relationships between the normalized bearing stress and normalized displacement are agreeable with the experimental results during the entire loading process. It is estimated from numerical results that the vertical stress beneath pile tip is up to 20 MPa which is large enough to cause sand to be crushed. The predicted distribution area of volumetric strain represents that the distributed area shaped wedge for volumetric contraction is beneath pile tip and distributed area for volumetric expansion is near the pile shaft. It is demonstrated that the finite element formulation incorporating a constitutive model for sand with crushing is capable of producing reasonable results for the pile loading problem.
Atmospheric dry deposition flux and ambient particle mass size distribution were measured to evaluate the impact of atmospheric deposition around the Nanjido landfill sites. Wind direction affects greatly on the variation of mass flux and mass size distribution and made two times higher when the wind was blown from the road side. The effect of Nanjido landfill on the mass size distribution was significant comparing to simultaneously measured mass size distribution at the other sampling site. The results showed that the particle diameter bigger than $10{\mu}m$ explained the majority of atmospheric dry deposition flux. A survey was also carried out to investigate the contamination of soils in a completed Nanjido landfill. The chemical properties of the soil analyzed in the present study include pH, oxidation-reduction potential (ORP), anion and cation concentration, total organic carbon(TOC), and some-metal elements concentrations were analyzed. Microbial activity in the soils was also evaluated by measuring dehydrogenase activities. TOC in the soil contaminated with leachate was $467.0{\mu}g/g-dry$ soil, and the TOC in the soil, where Nanjido landfill gases were emitted from, was $675{\mu}g/g-dry$ soil. The highest microbial activity of $968.0{\sim}2147{\mu}g-TPF/g-dry$ soil day was found in the soil spouting Nanjido landfill gases. Compared with those in the uncontaminated soil, the concentrations of Cr, Cu and Ph in the contaminated soil were higher.
This study was carried out to examine the effect of soil improvement according to the shape of charcoal and the kind of carbonized tree species. As the results, all of the seedlings of Thuja occidentalis and Aesculus turbinata grew better in the charcoal-treated soil than the non-treated soil. In case of powder charcoal, Thuja occidentalis seedlings grew up best in the soil treated with powder charcoal of Pinus koraiensis and then grew well in order of Larix leptolepis > particle board > Quercus acutissima. In case of granulated charcoal, the seedlings grew well in order of the granulated charcoal of Larix leptolepis > particle board > Pinus koraiensis. It was analyzed that the soil porosity and the organic matter content were mo re in the charcoal -treated soil than the non-treated soil also. It is inferred that because the aeration property and the absorption of organic matter were increased in the root zone, the growth of seedlings was better in the char-coal-treated soil.

Soil washing equipment was developed for decontamination of radioactively contaminated soil generated during normal operation or decommissioning and verification experiments were performed. Decontamination effciency above $80{\%}$ was achieved. In case of low radiation level and large particle size, decontamination efficiency was higher. According to the ratio of volume of water to soil quantity, decontamination efficiency was higher in case of high radiation level. Re-decontamination using decontaminated soil was effective in case of small particles. Using soil washing equipment, radioactivity of contaminated soil generated in nuclear power plant can be decreased and volume of soil for disposal can be decreased. And this equipment can be used in decommissioning.
First, methods of numerical analysis of gas-particle flows is classified into micro, meso and macro scale approaches based on the concept of multi-scale mechanics. Next, the explanation moves on to discrete particle simulation where motion of individual particles is calculated numerically using the Newtonian equations of motion. The author focuses on the cases where particle-to-particle interaction has significant effects on the phenomena. Concerning the particle-to-particle interaction, two cases are considered: the one is collision-dominated flows and the other is the contact-dominated flows. To treat this interaction mathematically, techniques named DEM(Distinct Element Method) or DSMC (Direct Simulation Monte Carlo) have been developed DEM, which has been developed in the field of soil mechanics, is useful for the contact -dominated flows and DSMC method, developed in molecular gas flows, is for the collision-dominated flows. Combining DEM or DSMC with CFD (computer fluid dynamics), the discrete particle simulation becomes a more practical tool for industrial flows because not only the particle-particle interaction but particle-fluid interaction can be handled. As examples of simulations, various results are shown, such as hopper flows, particle segregation phenomena, particle mixing in a rotating drum, dense phase pneumatic conveying, spouted bed, dense phase fluidized bed, fast circulating fluidized bed and so on.
In this study, it was examined the effect of carbonized wastewoods on soil improvement and effect of charcoal size on tree seedling growth Thuja accidentalis seedlings grow better in the charcoal-treated soil than in the non-treated soil. Especially Pinus koraiensis charcoal with good adsorption. brought the best growth result. The charcoal treatment also improved the height growth of transplanted Aesuculus turbinate seedling However charcoal sizes(i.e. powder and particle) did not affect the growth of the seedling. Also apple trees which had been suffering from rotten roots caused by root rot was recovered by application particle-sized charcoal.
Dewatered sludge of 400,000t/y from water treatment plants in Korea is being disposed through landfill and ocean dumping. However, the disposal is posing more and more serious environmental problems at the same time not only because of landfill site shortage in municipal suburbs, but because of the concern it will contaminate the oceans. In this study, the research on utilizing the sludge dried by flash dryer as covering soil in the landfill sites was carried out to solve these problems on environmental affinity. Both dewatered and dried sludge were exposed to the natural condition and observed according to the atmospheric changes. An experiment of soil engineering characteristics of the dried sludge and tests on mixed sludge(silty sandy soil : dried sludge = 10:90 ~ 30:70) such as particle size distribution, liquid and plastic limit, moisture content, specific gravity and compaction test were carried out. According to the compaction test, the compaction was confirmed as the optimum water content ratio was observed in the condition of SM-silty sand of particle size distribution, NP of liquid and plastic limit, 101.4% of moisture content, 2.04~2.12 of specific gravity. The results showed that dried sludges mixed with at least 30% of natural soil could be used as daily covering soil in the landfill sites.

This study discusses the soil erosion on hillslopes and sediment deposition in lakes within catchments in South Korea. In order to determine seasonal variations of sedimentation in Yeongcheon and Seondong lakes, the sediment traps were set in the deep part of both lakes and lake sediments have been sampledmonthly from July 2004 to August 2005. Some properties such as highmineral content, fine particle size and high particle density in the Yeongcheon Lake indicate intensive soil erosion, sediment transportation and deposition throughout the catchment for a long time. The high sediment yield in the Seondong Lake is related with higher weathering intensity and extreme soil erosion by running water due to higher seasonal rainfall amount. Rates of erosion and sedimentation in the Seondong Lake are estimated to be higher than those of the Yeongcheon Lake, suggesting that the Seondong Lake is associated with higher precipitation, smaller catchment area, and extreme soil vulnerability to ephemeral erosion by overland flow during the heavy rainfall event. Consequently, both catchments are characterized by different erosion and sedimentation processes, as well as different geomorphic factors (bedrock, soil structure, rainfall intensity and catchment area).
The study on the performance of the nonlinear friction tuned mass dampers (FTMD) for the mitigation of the seismic responses of the structures is a topic that still inspires the efforts of researchers. The present paper aims to carry out a numerical study on the optimum tuning of TMD and FTMD parameters using a multi-objective particle swarm optimization (MOPSO) algorithm including soil-structure interaction (SSI) effects for seismic applications. Considering a 3-story structure, the performances of the optimized TMD and FTMD are compared with the uncontrolled structure for three types of soils and the fixed base state. The simulation results indicate that, unlike TMDs, optimum tuning of FTMD parameters for a large preselected mass ratio may not provide a best and optimum design. For low mass ratios, optimal selection of friction coefficient has an important key to enhance the performance of FTMDs. Consequently, a free parameter search of all FTMD parameters provides a better performance in comparison with considering a preselected mass ratio for FTMD in the optimum design stage of the FTMD. Furthermore, the SSI significant effects on the optimum design of the TMD and FTMD. The simulation results also show that the FTMD provides a better performance in reducing the maximum top floor displacement and acceleration of the building in different soil types. Moreover, the performance of the TMD and FTMD decrease with increasing soil softness, so that ignoring the SSI effects in the design process may give an incorrect and unrealistic estimation of their performance.
This study was conducted to estimate the proper particle size of Zeolite particle as the soil conditioner for sandy soil. On sand columns filled with different size of sand fractions, Zeolite particles of different size were applied. Tap water was percolated through those columns under the same water level as paddy soil during rice growth. The > 0.1mm fraction of Zeolite was not vertically moved although the water was percolated for 96 hours. The < 0.1mm fraction of Zeolite was moved out 85.7% in 2-1mm, 32.64% in 1-0.5mm, and 24.5% in 0.5-0.25mm sand column, respectively. The proper diameter of Zeolite particle for amelioration of sandy soils widely distributed around river side in Korea was estimated as 0.25-0.1mm fraction in consideration of its pore size.
