  • Changes in the characteristics of dissolved organic matter was studied at selected stations in the Nakdong river basin using physical and chemical methods. Characteristics of dissolved organic matters were analysed and assessed. Production of disinfection byproducts were also investigated. 1. Result of relatedness study among each items of analyses showed that relatedness on BOD values were highest with cattle excrement treatment facilities where there is no synthetic organic materials and relatedness on $COD_{Mn}$ were highest at the mainstream Nakdong river. In case of $COD_{Cr}$ (which has more oxidative power than $COD_{Mn}$), the values were higher in the sidestreams indicating the higher content of recalcitrant compounds. The relatedness values for the $UV_{254}$ also showed higher values in the sidestreams and treatment facilities than mainstream indicating the presence of organic aromatic compounds. 2. Ratio of DOC on total organic carbon were higher in the mainstream which is attributable to the influent particulate organic materials produced by agricultural activities. The values were 10-15% higher in the mainstream compared with sidestreams. 3. Result of biodegradability test indicate that concentrations of recalcitrant DOC were higher in the sidestreams than in the mainstream. The values of recalcitrant DOC were higher with the forest stream indicating the effect of soil oriented humic substances. 4. Result of THM production test carried out at 10 stations in the Nakdong river show that $CHCl_3$ was detected with the highest value and the value was highest at Waekwan station.

  • We threat sludge by heating methods with low pollution and high efficiency. Organic and inorganic components in Sludge can be almost removed through the heaging treatment process, and thefinal products are called artifical aoil or artificial media which are depended on temperature control. It can be recycled on the agricultural sites. Because it contained sort of organic matters while high heaging process with addition. To use them as agricultural materials, it need to know their characteristic transform in the nature. So we have planting bean and corn for two years with standard planting methods and to anticipate changing characteristics of artificial media and artificial soil by staying it natural condition, analyze it physical and chemical characteristics. This study will be contributed to reduce mass enviornmental problems by the treatment of Sludge and make it possible application for a agriculture use.

  • A study was carried out on the physico-chemical properties of soil and content of heavy metals and benzo(a)pyrene that might have been introduced through by-product fertilizers or air pollution to growing turfgrass at natural turfgrass playgrounds in elementary schools located at the western coast and eastern mountain areas in Jeollabuk-do, Korea. The soil of turfgrass playgrounds is composed of loamy sand, and the CEC and organic matters were very low. Compared to agricultural land in Korea, the concentrations of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium were very low, requiring control in terms of nutrients. The contents of total and fraction heavy metals in soil were found to be background level. The reason may lie in the fact that unpolluted sand soil or sand was used to construct the foundation for the natural grass playground in the first place. However, any change in oxidation-reduction conditions or acceleration of decomposition of organic compounds may release some heavy metals from the soil and be transformed into forms that may be easily absorbed by plants or grass. It is believed that sustained monitoring and environment impact assessments should be carried out. The contents of benzo(a)pyrene in soil showed an average 0.60ng/g with a range between 0.06 to 1.47ng/g. The detected contents were found as background level.

  • The soil of the reclaimed tidal land, located in Chogi-ri, Is. Kanghwa, Korea was used in this experiment. The experimented soil samples were collected from 18 sites with its time elapsed after the shore-protection works, soil-depth and the vegetation of saline plants, and at each site samplings were conducted monthly from March through October, 1968, for the purposes of examining the changes of microbial populations for the microbes such as bacteria, actinomycetes and fungi, by using the dilution plate method. The numbers of the microbes in these soils generally showed lower levels comparing with those of other soils. The more time elapsed after the reclamation, the higher numbers of the microbes inhibited the soils. Higher populations were there in the surface soils than in the lower part of the area. The surface soils included comparatively better conditions in aeration and contents of organic matter than in the lower part, and this fact was. same as in general soils. However, not so was this in the case of March, April and October due to the higher soil temperatures in the lows. At the experimental sites where the halophytes such as Salicorniu were grown vigourously, the more densly the plants grew, the higher populations of actinomycetes and fungi were, but not in the case of bacterial population. This means, in this soil with dense Salicornia, it is difficult to obtain good-natured soils in short time without a higher population of bacteria. For the rapid utilization of the land soil, in this view of point, the methods increasing the number of bacteria in the soil are needed as well as the cultivation and harvesting Salicorniu which indicated in the privious paper(Hong, et al., 1969a). According to the results of this experiment, the changes of soil-microbial populations in the reclaimed tidal land soil containing high salinity depend deeply upon the interrelations of many environmental factors such as soil-salinity, soil-components and contents, concentration of organic matters, pH, aeration, and air and soil temperatures, as in the general soils.

  • This study was conducted to analyze soil physico-chemical properties of agricultural land composed from the river-bed sediments. We investigated the changes of soil physico-chemical properties at 30 different sampling sites containing paddy, upland and plastic film house from 2012 to 2015. pH, exchangeable calcium and magnesium decreased gradually in paddy soils during the four years, whereas the available $P_2O_5$, exchangeable Ca, Mg and EC increased in upland and plastic film house soil. For the soil physical properties, bulk density and hardness of topsoil were $1.47g\;cm^{-3}$ and 21.5 mm and those of subsoil were $1.71g\;cm^{-3}$ and 25.7 mm in paddy soils. In upland soils, bulk density and hardness of topsoil were $1.48g\;cm^{-3}$ and 15.9 mm and those of subsoil were $1.55g\;cm^{-3}$ and 16.9 mm. In plastic film house soils, bulk density and hardness of topsoil were $1.42g\;cm^{-3}$ and 14.4 mm and those of subsoil were $1.40g\;cm^{-3}$ and 18.5 mm, respectively. The penetration hardness was higher than 3 MPa below soil depth 20 cm, and it is impossible to measure below soil depth 50 cm. As these results, in agricultural anthropogenic soils dredged from river basins, the pH, amount of organic matter and exchangeable cations decreased and soil physical properties also deteriorated with time. Therefore, it is needed to apply more organic matters and suitable amount of fertilizer and improve the soil physical properties by cultivating green manure crops, deep tillage, and reversal of deep soils.

  • For the environmental protection, it is more desirable to use compost rather than chemical fertilizer. So in this paper, the effects of compost upon the rice quality were investigated with Hwajin Rice as the test variety. The rice quality and physicochemical characteristics were examined and the resrlts are as follows. As to the rice quality, the rate of polished rice was high in the non-fertilizer and the compost plot, the degree of transparency was high in the order of the traditional, the compost+urea, the compost and the non-fertilizer plot. The amylose content (one of the physicochemical characteristies of the rice), the rate of Mg/K, and the adhesivity and the cohesion power (charateristies of texturogram which show the density of boiled rice) were also high in the compost polt. Among the amylogram characteristics, the gelatinization temperature was lowest in the compost plot ; the lowest and the highest degree of viscosity and the break down were also inclined to be higher in the compost plot than in the traditional plot. After the soil test, the components of available phosphorus, organic matters, calcium, magnesium, potassinm and silicate increased in the soil as compared with those before test.

  • In order to enhance a biogas production by the hydro-thermal pre-treatment of piggery manure, the effects of hydro-thermal reaction temperature at thermal hydrolysis of piggery manure on the methane potential and anaerobic biodegradability of thermal hydrolysate were analyzed. The increase of hydro-thermal reaction temperature from $170^{\circ}C$ to $220^{\circ}C$ caused the enhancement of hydrolysis efficiency, and most of organic matters were present in soluble forms. However, the methane potentials ($B_u-TCOD$) of hydrolysate were decreased from 0.239 to $0.188Nm^3kg^{-1}-TCOD_{added}$ by increasing hydro-thermal reaction temperature from $170^{\circ}C$ to $220^{\circ}C$, and also the anaerobic biodegradability (DTCOD) decreased from 74.6% to 58.6% with increase of hydro-thermal reaction temperature. The increase of hydro-thermal reaction temperature from $170^{\circ}C$ to $220^{\circ}C$ resulted in the decrease of easily biodegradable organic matter content, while persistent organic matter contents increased.

  • Measurements of phosphatase activity in peatlands are made difficult by the low levels of activity and the characteristically high concentrations of dissolved organic matter within the sediments. These materials may cause high background absorbances in colorimetric assays, and quenching interference in fluorimetric assays. This review describes the development of a new approach which allows such problems to be overcome by using HPLC to separate the interferences from the products of enzymic hydrolysis. This approach is applicable to various environmental samples such as peat, wetland sediment, and sludge which may contain a large amount of interfering organic matters.

  • Background: As the decomposition of lignocellulosic compounds is a rate-limiting stage in the nutrient mineralization from organic matters, elucidation of the changes in soil enzyme activity can provide insight into the nutrient dynamics and ecosystem functioning. The current study aimed to assess the effect of thinning intensities on soil conditions. Un-thinned control, 20 % thinning, and 30 % thinning treatments were applied to a Larix kaempferi forest, and total carbon and nitrogen, total carbon to total nitrogen ratio, extractable nutrients (inorganic nitrogen, phosphorus, calcium, magnesium, potassium), and enzyme activities (acid phosphatase, ${\beta}$-glucosidase, ${\beta}$-xylosidase, ${\beta}$-glucosaminidase) were investigated. Results: Total carbon and nitrogen concentrations were significantly increased in the 30 % thinning treatment, whereas both the 20 and 30 % thinning treatments did not change total carbon to total nitrogen ratio. Inorganic nitrogen and extractable calcium and magnesium concentrations were significantly increased in the 20 % thinning treatment; however, no significant changes were found for extractable phosphorus and potassium concentrations either in the 20 or the 30 % thinning treatment. However, the applied thinning intensities had no significant influences on acid phosphatase, ${\beta}$-glucosidase, ${\beta}$-xylosidase, and ${\beta}$-glucosaminidase activities. Conclusions: These results indicated that thinning can elevate soil organic matter quantity and nutrient availability, and different thinning intensities may affect extractable soil nutrients inconsistently. The results also demonstrated that such inconsistent patterns in extractable nutrient concentrations after thinning might not be fully explained by the shifts in the enzyme-mediated nutrient mineralization.
