A model was developed to describe the microbial decontamination of diesel contaminated soil in a soil column. The biodegradation rate of diesel in nature depends on temperature and the pH of soil, availability of nutrients, oxygen and water. The soil moisture content is one of the essential factors because it characterizes the availability not only of water to microorganisms but also of oxygen and nutrient dissolved in soil. In this work, the rate of biodegradation was modeled by coupling Michaelis-Menten kinetics for the aqueous-phase solute with adsoption-desoption equation for diesel sorption and desorption from soil.
Aspen demand has increased recently in the Great Lakes region in the United States. Since aspen has moved into the region in late 1800's, its growing stock has increased so as to change forestry industry of the Lake States. Intensive timber harvesting and biomass removal may cause nutrient depletion, especially on nutrient-poor sites. Forest nutrients and nutrient cycling were investigated in aspen stands of 7-10, 27-33, and 41-42 year-old growing on sandy soils in Minnesota. Nutrients added to the aspen stands by atmospheric deposition and soil weathering were efficiently absorbed and stored in the tree biomass. Aboveground biomass increased from $24.4t{\cdot}ha^{-1}$ at young stands to $139.2t{\cdot}ha^{-1}$ at mature stands. Nutrients accumulated in the tree biomass showed same magnitude of difference. Nutrients added to the site through atmospheric deposition were in the order of Ca, N, K, Mg, and P. Annual litterfall was greater in older stands. However, the amount of nutrients returned by litterfall was not significantly different among stand ages due to the greater nutrient contents in the litterfall of young stands. Litter decomposition and nutrient release rates were greater at young stands than at older stands. Likewise, nutrient availability was higher in young aspen stands and became lower as the stands grew older. Nutrient leaching loss was minimal at all stand ages. Soil N mineralization was greater at young stands than at older stands. Nutrient cycling process was facilitated in young aspen stands with an increased level of available nutrients, Based on the estimations of nutrient balance and nutrient removal by harvesting, Ca was the most critical element which was likely to be depleted if aspen stands are intensively harvested with short rotations.

The practice of supplying nutrients for paddy soil with sustaining human health and ecological soundness is to utilize indicators considering soil chemical reactions. The long-term basis experiment of fertilizer and amendment of paddy soil and an experiment of yield response of soil types on nitrogen level from 2000 till 2002were used to search indicators of nutrient supplying capacity related to soil chemical reactions. Chemical reactions of paddy soil was composed of dissociating and/or adsorbing nutrients and of decomposing soil organic matter (SOM) into $H^+$, $e^-$, $CO_2$ in paddy soil. The indicators of nutrient supplying capacity, which were established by considering soil chemical reactions, were SOM or soil protein for nitrogen and available phosphate for phosphorus and cation exchangeable capacity (CEC) and exchangeable potassium for potassium. Korea has used fertilizer recommendation equations established with the indicators of nutrient supplying capacity for paddy soil.
An experiment was conducted to detect aquaculture pond bottom soil nutrients, pH and electrical conductivity with a view to optimize production and to incorporate the scientific method of fish nursing, rearing and culturing at Noakhali district in Bangladesh. The soil samples were collected from the recently dug ponds (1 - 5 years) and older ponds (> 5 years). Samples were taken from five different spots in a Z shape from each pond and were mixed to get a composite sample. The composite samples from the ponds were collected in polyethylene bags and shipped to the laboratory for analysis. The soil samples were analyzed with respect to pH, electrical conductivity (EC), organic carbon (OC), organic matter (OM), nitrogen (N), phosphorous (P), potassium (K) and sulfur (S). The average value of pH, OC, OM, N, P, K and S were $7.43{\pm}0.40$, $2.21{\pm}1.43%$, $1.47{\pm}0.53%$, $2.52{\pm}0.94{\mu}g\;g^{-1}$, $0.126{\pm}0.047{\mu}g\;g^{-1}$, $3.84{\pm}1.77{\mu}g\;g^{-1}$, $0.191{\pm}0.106{\mu}g\;g^{-1}$ and $306.72{\pm}222.05{\mu}g\;g^{-1}$ respectively, in Noakhali. The average EC, OC, OM, N and P contents were found to be higher in Subornachar than those in Sonapur. On the other hand pH, K and S were found to be higher in Sonapur than the values of Subornachar. The pH, EC, OC, OM, N and S contents were found to be higher in new ponds than old ponds whereas P and K contents were found to be higher in old pond than in new pond.
In this study, bio-electrokinetics was used to increase migration of arsenic by activating endemic microorganisms in the soil. In this technology, bio-electrokinetics which the cultured soil microorganisms and nutrients injected combines with biological technology. This technology using electrical movement of microorganisms could overcome the weakness of late degradation speed and low removal efficiency. And, various soil microorganisms reduce ferreous, manganese, etc., using organic matter by as an electron donor by injecting mixture of soil microorganisms and nutrients instead of using electrolyte of the electrode. Accordingly, surrounding metal oxide microorganisms convert arsenic (III) to arsenic (V) to increase migration of arsenic (III), in consequence, migration of arsenic increased in 60 to 70% compared to about 30% of conventional electrokinetics.

This paper presents a preliminary investigation of the optimum nutrients combination required for bioremediation of spent-engine oil contaminated soil using Box-Behnken-Design. Three levels of cow-manure, poultry-manure and inorganic nitrogen-phosphorus-potassium (NPK) fertilizer were used as independent biostimulants variables; while reduction in total petroleum hydrocarbon (TPH) and total soil porosity (TSP) response as dependent variables were monitored under 6-week incubation. Ex-situ data generated in assessing the degree of biodegradation in the soil were used to develop second-order quadratic regression models for both TPH and TSP. The two models were found to be highly significant and good predictors of the response fate of TPH-removal and TSP-improvement, as indicated by their coefficients of determination: $R^2=0.9982$ and $R^2=1.000$ at $p{\leq}0.05$, respectively. Validation of the models showed that there was no significant difference between the predicted and observed values of TPH-removal and TSP-improvement. Using numerical technique, the optimum values of the biostimulants required to achieve a predicted maximum TPH-removal and TSP-improvement of 67.20 and 53.42%-dry-weight per kg of the contaminated soil were as follows: cow-manure - 125.0 g, poultry-manure - 100.0 g and NPK-fertilizer - 10.5 g. The observed values at this optimum point were 66.92 and 52.65%-dry-weight as TPH-removal and TSP-improvement, respectively.
This study was conducted to check the applicability of pilot-scale co-composting for the remediation of diesel contaminated soil during the winter. Nutrients and microbes were added to enhance the efficiency of bioremediation and fermenting composts were also added to stimulate the microbial activities. As a result. the soil pile was kept at adequate temperature for the bioremediation during the test period of 30∼40 days and initial concentration(2,340mg TPH/kg dry soil) was reduced to 216mg TPH/kg dry soil (approximately 91% removal). During the initial 10∼30 days, it was found that the TPH concentration and the microbial population were rapidly reduced and increased. respectively. The co-composting technology studied can be effectively applied to remediate the diesel contaminated soil during the winter.
Although the quantity of dredged soils has increased owing to recent new harbor construction, sea course management, polluted sediment dredging, and four-river project, the reuse or recycling of those dredged soils has not done properly in Korea. To develop measures to utilize them in various ways for reuse or recycling, the biophysicochemical properties of dredged soils and sediment were assessed in this study. Samples were classified according to their sources-river and sea-by location, and as dredged soil and sediment depending on storage time. The results showed that dredged materials from the sea have high clay content and can be used for making bricks, tiles, and lightweight backfill materials, while dredged materials from the river have high sand content and can be used in sand aggregates. Separation procedures, depending on the intended application, should be carried out because all dredged materials are poorly sorted. All dredged soils and sediments have high salinity, and hence, salts should be removed before use for cultivation. Since dredged materials from the sea have adequate concentrations of nutrients, except phosphate, they can be used for creating and restoring coastal habitats without carrying out any additional removal processes. The high overall microbial activities in dredged materials from the river suggested that active degradation of organic matter, circulation of nutrients, and provision of nutrients may occur if these dredged materials are used for cultivation purpose.

This study is conducted to evaluate the effects of chelating agents for improving plant growth and reusing accumulated nutrients in soils of plastic film house. Two experiments were carried out at follows: i) The incubation test was conducted using soils treated with 0, 300 mM of EDTA and DTPA to examine the availability of nutrients. ii) For the pot test, chinese cabbages were cultivated in soils with 0, 0.1, 0.5, 1, and 5 mM of EDTA and DTPA to examine the impacts of plant growth response. The application of chelating agents increased ther availability of soil nutrients in the following order: DTPA > EDTA > control. Inorganic concentration of chinese cabbages in DTPA treatments consderably increased in nitrogen, phosphate, iron and aluminium contents than that of the other treatments. The optimal concentration of DTPA for vigorous plant growth as 0.5 mM. Thus, DTPA was more effective than other chelating agents for healty growth of cabbages and the availability of nutrients accumulated in plastic film house.

When microorganism is injected into porous medium such as soils along with appropriate substrate and nutrients, biomass retained in the soil pore. Soil pore size and shape are varied from the initial condition as a result of biofilm formation, which make hydraulic conductivity reduced. In this research, hydraulic conductivity reduction was measured after microorganism are inoculated and cultured with synthetic substrates and nutrients. Biomass-soil mixture was evaluated its applicability to the field condition as an alternative liner material in landfill by measuring hydraulic conductivity change after repetitive freeze-thaw cycles. Resistance of biofilm to chemical solution and degree of biodegradation were measured through column test.
