Water content of subgrade soil in water supply systems has a large effect on performance. Many researchers lately make use of time-domain reflectometry (TDR) probes to measure the soil water content of subgrade soil from monitoring. The laboratory calibration test of TDR probe should be performed with soil field, because TDR probe can cause an error by type, gradation, density, and temperature of soil. This study shows the laboratory calibration test using TDR CS616, TDR-P3, TDR-T3. The calibration equations of TDR were then proposed. It was confirmed from the study that the data of TDR probe monitored in field could be used to estimate the freezing, unfrozen water content, and matric suction of soil.

The characteristics of compaction and unconfined compressive strength were investigated by mixing with lime to all soils adjusted by given percentages of two kinds of clays to sand to obtain the most effective distribution of grain size and the optimum lime content for soil stabilization. In addition, unconfined compressive strength and durability tested by adding of sodium metasilicate, sodium sulfate, sodium carbonate, sodium gydroxide and magnesium oxide to lime-soil mixture mixed with 8 percent lime to adjusted soil having the mixing percentage of 60 percent of cohesive black clay and 40 percent of sand by weight to get the effect and the optimum content of chemicals. The results obtained were as follows; 1.With the addition of more lime, the optimum moisture content was increased, and the maximum dry density was decreased, whereas the more the amount of clay and the less was the maximum drt density. 2. In the soil having more fine grain size the unconfined compressive strength was larger in the earlier stage of curing period, in accordance with the longer period, the mixing percentages of sand to clay showing the maximum unconfined compressive strength, on the basis of 28-day strength, were 60% : 40% (black clay) and 40% : 60% (brown clay) respectively. 3. The reason why the soil adjusted with black clay was remarkably bigger in the unconfined compressive strength than ones adjusted with brown clay for all specimen of lime-soil mixture was the difference in the kind of clay, the amount of chemical compositions the value of pH. Black clay was mainly composed of halloysite that reacted with lime satisfactorily, whereas the main composition of brown clay was kaolinite that was less effect in the enhance of unconfined compressive strength. Also the difference of unconfined compressive strength was because black clay was larger in the amount of composition of calcium oxide and magnesium oxide in the value of pH affecting directly on the unconfined compressive strength of lime-soil mixture than brown clay. 4. In the lime-soil mixture mixed with 8 percent of lime to soil that mixing percentage of sand to black clay was 60% : 40%, on the standard of 7-day strength, the effect of chemical was arranged in the order of magnesium oxide, sodium carbonate, sodium sulfate, sodium hydroxide and sodium metasilicate. 5. The optimum amount of chemical being applicable to the maximum unconfined compressive strength of lime-chemical-soil mixture was 1 percent by weight for air dry soil in the case of adding sodium carbonated and 0.75 percent on sodium hydroxide, the unconfined compressive strength was increased continuously with increase of the amount of chemical up to 2 percent of chemical content is the lime-chemical-soil mixture added sodium metasilicate, sodium sulfate and magnesium oxide. 6. It was considered that the chemical played and accelerant role of early revelation of strength because the rate of increase of unconfined compressive strength of all of lime-chemical-soil mixtures was largest on the 7-day cured specimen. 7. The effect of test on freezing and thawing after adding suitable amount of chemical on the lime-soil mixture mixed with 8 percent of lime to soil that mixing percentage of sand to black clay was 60% : 40% was arranged in the order of magnesium oxide, sodium carbonate, sodium sulfate, sodium metasilicate and sodium hydroxide.

Recently, the Arctic resource development project, where undeveloped energy resources (oil, natural gas, etc.) are deposited, is actively being promoted for the perspective of diversifying the construction market and developing future energy resources. However, the frozen ground always has problems such as sinking and frost-heaving due to extreme weather. Therefore, it is necessary to analyze the thermal characteristics of the frozen soil to secure the stability of the ground structure. In this study, a series of laboratory tests were performed to evaluated the thermal characteristics of frozen soil samples in the oil sand field in Alberta, Canada. In additon, it was compared with the results of domestic(Gangwond-do) sample performed under the same conditions. As a comparison results of the experiments, it was clarified that the different frozen water content and thermal conductivity characteristics by temperature after completion of freezing could affect the frozen soil behavior.

Soil and rock were yielded during construction of subway in Taegu. Produced rock is a kind of a sedimentary rock with low strength and low durability of shrinkage. So it is difficult using for resources engineering. But in our country, it is very important to use material resources due to lack of natural resources. In this study, after cracking sedimentary rock like black shale and red shale, they are compared with granite which usually used road constriction field to investigate property of use for road construction. Consequently, the engineering character of origin rock is satisfactory, but the soundness test, black shale and red shale are less than KS 12.9%, 37.5% respectively. The result of concrete freezing-thawing test shows that the strength among three materials is not a wide difference but red shale has relatively low strength. The result of asphalt freezing-thawing test with 50 cycles indicates that the stability of red shale in lower than KS 484~561kg on base course, 336~375kg on surface course respectively. A further research should be needed for propriety to the material of shale.
Nowadays abnormal coldness happens frequently in Korea and frost heaving causes unexpected ground deformation which results in severe problems for structures such as roadway, railroad and cutoff slope. 'Frost heave' as one of the primary phenomenon is considered to be an important factor together with 'adfreeze bond-strength' and 'creep deformation' for structural design process in permafrost area. Therefore, the fundamental study for frost heave has to be preceded for design of geo-structures in cold region. While various experimental apparatuses have been developed, there still exist a certain level of limitation to evaluate the frost-heave characteristics as design parameters. There are no standard testing method and criteria for analyzing frost heaving in Korea because temperature controlled testing apparatuses including a freezing chamber are expensive. In this paper, a new standard freezing and thawing testing apparatus is introduced, which simulates various freezing and thawing conditions in a soil specimen by using a temperature controlled triaxial cell. Frost heaving tests were performed to assess the new testing apparatus and experimental procedure to evaluate frost heaving for soils is proposed.

Hwangtoh is the rich resource that accounts for about 15.0% of the domestic soil, and can be used as the admixture of concrete with Pozzolan characteristics if activated by rapidly freezing after burning with high temperature. In this study, the mortar curbs containing active hwangtoh were produced, based on the mixture for the mortar curbs sold on the market. The substitution rate of active hwangtoh were considered 10.0% and 25.0%, and the test items were selected to compressive and flexural strength tests, freezing/thawing resistance tests, accelerated carbonation tests, and accelerated chloride diffusion tests. In the results of the mechanical performance, it was showed that the highest strength was evaluated in OPC mixture, and the increase in strength was small by the increase of age, which was believed to be due to the fact that most of the strength in each mixture was created in three days of steam curing. The results of the freezing/thawing tests for 28 aged days showed the reduction rate of compressive strength was 85.0% or higher for all specimen, meeting the criteria presented. The accelerated carbonation tests were carried out on the specimen at 28 days of age, and the results showed that the mortar with active hwangtoh had lower carbonation resistance performance than mortar with OPC. The passed charge of each mixture was assessed in accordance with ASTM C 1202 on 28 and 91 aged days. The OPC mixture had "Low" rate and the mortar with active hwangtoh had "Moderate" rate. So it was thought that the mortar with active hwangtoh had appropriate resistance performance for chloride attack.
Producing consistent, accurate soil moisture data to be utilized as a reference dataset for researches related to hydrological cycle and natural disaster is being critical, but such techniques (e.g. quality control) are still limited to improve reliability of soil moisture data. In this study, analyses of soil moisture's behavior and quality control based on International Soil Moisture Network's (ISMN's) criteria were carried out in Yongdam study watershed, which is UNESCO-IHP' representative examination area in South Korea, to suggest a direction to improve the quality of soil moisture data. The results of the behavior analysis showed normal increasing/decreasing patterns following precipitation events in all stations except two (i.e. Bugui, Ancheon). As a result of applying quality flagging technique, there were no observation recordings in abnormal range, and freezing of soil moisture occurred within general range (~20%). Soil moisture rise without prior rainfall appeared about 4% and there were less than 0.01% for spike and 5% for plateau. Producing more reliable reference data will be possible if site-specific criteria for quality control are considered enough in the future.
This paper presents the results of an investigation into the effect of cyclic wetting-drying on the compressive strength characteristics of decomposed granite soils. A series of plane strain compression (PSC) tests were performed on test specimens with varying fine contents under different wetting-drying cycles to investigate the change in compressive strength under the process of wetting-drying cycles. The effect of wetting-drying cycles on the structural particle rearrangement at a micro-scale level was also examined using scanning electron microscope (SEM) tests. It was shown that the soil containing larger fines showed more significant decrease in compressive strength compared with the soils with less fines. Also found was that the wetting-drying cycle did not have significant effect on the particle arrangement.
Studies were conducted to determine the effect of undersoil heating on growth and quality of turfgrasses including Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis L.‘Nuglade’), perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.‘Accent’), tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea Schreb.‘Pixie’), and Korean lawngrass (Zoysia japonica Steud.) in simulated athletic field during winter season in Korea. Mineral contents in clippings of turfgrasses grown at different soil mixtures and temperatures were also analyzed. Undersoil heating (approximately 20$\pm$2$^{\circ}C$) was effective in protecting turfgrasses except Korean lawngrass from freezing injury and discoloration of shoots due to extremely cold temperatures during midwinter. Among turfgrasses grown at undersoil heating zone, tall fescue and perennial ryegrass showed the highest clipping weights and chlorophyll contents, respectively. However, anthocyanin contents of shoots were higher in Kentucky bluegrass. There was little or no difference in clipping weights, chlorophyll contents, anthocyanin contents and greenness of shoots between turfgrasses grown at two soil mixtures composed of 80% sand+10% peat moss+10% soil (v/v/v) and 80% sand+20% pea moss (v/v). Contents of mineral K, Ca and Mg in clippings of cool-season turfgrasses were comparatively higher in a soil mixture composed of 80% sand+10% peat moss+10% soil, but little difference in contents of N and P was observed between two soil treatments. Results indicated that undersoil heating can improve quality of turf surface by thawing soil, melting snow, and maintaining shoot growth and greenness of turfgrasses in sports field during winter season.
This experiment was carried out to find out the effects of heat conservation materials (burying in soil, lagging, lagging +straw, nonwoven fabric, nonwoven fabric+straw) on freezing damage, labor saving, and crown gall occurrence of 'Kyoho' grapes. Temperature differences in burying in soil and lagging with $2.8^{\circ}C$ and $6.4^{\circ}C$, respectively and were considered favorable for over-wintering of grapevines. Heat conservation index in lagging +straw and burying in soil calculated from degree-hours below $-10^{\circ}C$ was 5 to 7 times higher than that of open field. Budbreak started earlier in lagging with+straw and nonwoven fabric+straw covering, and percent budbreak was increased by 22% and 7%, respectively, as well as higher than burying in soil. Diameter of bearing mother branch and length of internode and daughter branch were gross or long with soil and lagging straw and nonwoven fabric+straw. Cane growth was enhanced by burying in soil and lagging with+straw treatment. Crown gall occured higher in soil covered grape vines Labor saving was obtained in lagging with as much as 44% compared to burying in soil.
