This study was intended to investigate and analyze the current status of the plant community structure in order to provide basic data for the systematic conservation and management of the Buxus sinica area appearing on the ridgeline connecting the Gyeokjabong(Mt.) and Keungiljae, on Bogildo Island. In consideration of location characteristics such as density, topography, and direction of B. sinica appearing in the shrub layers, a total of 26 sites were set as the survey area for representative vegetation communities or areas with changes in topography. According to DCA and TWINSPAN, it was classified into 6 communities, namely Carpinus turczaninovii-Deciduous broad-leaved, C. turczaninovii, C. turczaninovii-B. sinica, C. turczaninovii-Evergreen broad-leaved, Q. acuta, and D. trifidus-Q. acuta. The community dominated by C. turczaninovii maintains the status quo for the present moment, however, Q. acuta will dominate the surrounding area in the long term, so Q. acuta has high succesion potential. In the case of the Q. acuta and D. trifidus-Q. acuta communities, Q. acuta, known as the climax species of warm-temperate forests, will maintain dominant status. In a case of B. sinica, the community dominated by C. turczaninovii will remain in good status due to the topographical conditions, but the community dominated by Q. acuta growth difficulties are expected due to the high coverage. In the relationship between environmental factors and vegetation distribution, analysis showed that only soil pH affect vegetation distribution. Furthermore, the soil acidity (pH) was 3.78-5.30, the electrical conductivity was 0.186-0.543 dS/m, and the organic matter content was 2.25-2.89%.

Background : The genus Cypripediums are typically adapted to the low temperature and cold climates of the high land in Korea. The species which were reported in Korean peninsula are C.japonicum, C.macranthos, C.calceolus and C.guttatum. We had already reported the successful germination of the C.macranthos and C.guttatum. The small spotted lady's slipper orchid(C.guttatum) is most endangered plants to extinction of which population was reported less than 100 in Korea. The objective of the present research is restoration of the C.guttatum in ex situ and adaptation in high land and nursery. Methods and Results : The 350 seedlings of C.guttatum were transplanted in soil at alpine area(altitude 750m) and the nursery of Korea National Arboretum(KNA) in YangPyeong city on May 2019 and 2020 in order to verify the possibility of ex situ restoration. The sprouted ratio of the seedlings were less than 10% in the alpine area and 83% in the nursery of KNA. The reasons of the diverse survival ratio are presumed as the low moisture content in the soil and heavy shade of the alpine area. The 15 cypripedium species and 29 hybrids were also effectively adapted in the KNA rare plant garden. Conclusion : These results demonstrated the difficulties of the restoration for small spotted lady's slipper orchid in the natural habitation. From the above results, we may conclude that the critical factors of the genus Cypripedium are intensive care for the fragile seedlings during the 1st year acclimatization.
The wooden building is mainly damaged by the termite which have an effect of the structure by making emptied inner part of wood. One class, Japanese termite, inhabits throughout Korea and is often detected. So the deterioration by termite attacking the wooden building needs to be controlled. Termites are over 2,800 species in the world, usually they inhabit in the tropical or subtropical region and don’t over winter in dormant condition. So their activity and distribution are chiefly restricted by temperature and humidity. The termite inhabiting in Korea is Reticulitermes speratus kyushuensis Morimoto, which known to have an optimal temperature range at $12~30^{\circ}C$ and minimum temperature at $6^{\circ}C$ for activation. These temperatures correspond to the mean temperature($5.6^{\circ}C$~$25.8^{\circ}C$) from March to November and the activity time of termitein Seoul. In addition, as a result of environmental pollution by industrial development, the climate of Korea is getting warm. The increase of mean temperature in Korea has been $1.1^{\circ}C$ for the past seventy five years, so it is expected that the damage of wooden building by termite will increase gradually. Therefore, in order to protect wooden building from damages by termite, it needs not only development of new pest control methods, but also studies on the control of environmental factors having an effect on the activity and growth of termite. For the conservation of the large cultural properties such as the wooden building in the open air, it would be effective to use the methods of fumigation, insecticidal and antiseptic chemical treatment of wood materials, soil termiticideinjection treatment, and termite colony elimination system.
The purpose of this study was to examine the potentiality of urban forest roads as an environment for enhancing physical fitness. Six male university students participated in the study as subjects. The subjects walked on an urban forest road for 30 minutes. As a control experiment, they also walked on a national park trail for 30 minutes. Subjects' heart rates were monitored during the walks to calculate the ratio of the average time their heart rates were within the target range (from 60% to 80% of the maximal heart rate) for Enhancing Physical Fitness. After the walks, images of the spaces were analyzed using the semantic differential (SD) method. During the walk on the urban forest road, subjects' heart rates were within the target range 63.3% of the time, and lower than the target range 36.7% of the time. During the control experiment on the national park trail, subjects' heart rates were within the target range only 23.3% of the time, and higher than the target range 76.7% of the time. From the spatial perception evaluation using the SD method, subjects' comfortable and natural feelings when they were on the national park trail were significantly greater than when they were on the urban forest trail, but there were no differences in terms of other SD descriptors, such as friendliness and likeability. The results of our study indicate that the urban forest road provides a good environment for walking to enhance physical fitness. Although not as close to nature as national park trails, urban forest roads offer similar natural environments and have a high potentiality for serving as leisure spaces for urban residents who seek physical activities.
Last review papers on Korean geomorphology and physical geography had been published in 1997 and 2000 respectively. A proposal to publish a book on Korean geomorphologists' achievement resulted in series of review papers in Journal of the Korean Geomorphological Association. This article aims to summarize these papers and introduce their findings to foreign scholars. On remarkable achievement is a fierce debate on the effectiveness of traditional mountain concept to explain the shape of Korean peninsula, which made the public's understanding of geomorphology widen to the general public. Reflecting public demands, concerns for the effects of coastal facilities on coastal erosion and conservation mind and scientific researches for the coastal sand dunes have increased so much. Geomorphological hazards such as debris flow attracted many concerned scientists, and geotourism-related papers in scientific journals increased thanks to the designation of first geopark in Korea. Research papers submitted to the famous foreign academic journals are increasing in numbers these days.

The purpose of this study is to decide the suitability of the land use on eco-city by analysing ecological elements using GIS. Selected ecological elements for suitability analysis were altitude, slope, watershed, biotope, soil productivity, visual sensitivity, vegetation, and green connection. The category of each element was classified into 5 grades, and was given weight according to each element. The maximum value of each element was extracted from overlay analysis process. The result of analysis was classified into 5 grade finally. As a result, land use was proposed to be development, conservation, and preservation area.
This study was carried out to find the problems of assessment on terrestrial ecosystem part in environmental impact analysis(EIA) and to suggest the proper amelioration measures by analyzing 19 environmental impact statements(EIS) published during the period from 1991 to 1994. The results obtained from this study were as follows. Field survey for the investigation of fauna and flora in project areas should be conducted at least 3 times a year and name of investigator should be written on the EIS clearly. Increase or decrease in degree of green naturality and productivity cannot be an absolute criteria for expressing the amount of changes in ecosystem. Evaluation for the ecosystems and their composition in project area is more important than presenting merely the increase or decrease in degree of green naturality and productivity. Alleviation measures in 19 EISs analyzed in this study were summarized into 6 types: They are establishment of landscape plan, transplanting of useful trees preservation of big tree and protected species, restoration and preservation of existent vegetation, establishment of soil conservation measures and diminution of the impact on animal. However, they were somewhat insufficient because they wouldn't suggest the alleviation measures in detail. The more positive counter-proposals are needed to decrease the impact of the project on terrestrial ecosystem.
The author of this paper has participated for research on soil conservation and watershed management for two years as an associate Personnel at the Inter-American Institute for Co-operation on Agriculture (IICA-OAS), in Jamaica. This paper is fundamentally based on the author's experience of researches as well as the results of studies with the references cited. The island of Jamaica having $11,440km^2$ was divided into 33 groups of watersheds and eighteen watersheds were identified as severely disturbed areas of mostly upstream. There are approximately 164,000 ha of land in urgent need of rehabilitation and protection including a 36,900 ha of five watersheds first priority needed. A national programme of watershed management to conserve all the watersheds, particularly those inhabited by small farmers is urgently necessary.
This study was carried out in degraded and non-degraded community forests (CF) in the Terai region of Kanchanpur district, Nepal. A total of 63 concentric sample plots each of 500 ㎡ was laid in the inventory for estimating above and below-ground biomass of forests by using systematic random sampling with a sampling intensity of 0.5%. Mallotus philippinensis and Shorea robusta were the most dominant species in degraded and non-degraded CF accounting Importance Value Index (I.V.I) of 97.16 and 178.49, respectively. Above-ground tree biomass carbon in degraded and non-degraded community forests was 74.64±16.34 t ha-1 and 163.12±20.23 t ha-1, respectively. Soil carbon sequestration in degraded and non-degraded community forests was 42.55±3.10 t ha-1 and 54.21±3.59 t ha-1, respectively. Hence, the estimated total carbon stock was 152.68±22.95 t ha-1 and 301.08±27.07 t ha-1 in degraded and non-degraded community forests, respectively. It was found that the carbon sequestration in the non-degraded community forest was 1.97 times higher than in the degraded community forest. CO2 equivalent in degraded and non-degraded community forests was 553 t ha-1 and 1105 t ha-1, respectively. Statistical analysis showed a significant difference between degraded and non-degraded community forests in terms of its total biomass and carbon sequestration potential (p<0.05). Studies indicate that the community forest has huge potential and can reward economic benefits from carbon trading to benefit from the REDD+/CDM mechanism by promoting the sustainable conservation of community forests.
Objectives The present study analyzes metal contamination in sediment of the East Kolkata Wetlands, a Ramsar site, which is receiving a huge amount of domestic and industrial wastewater from surrounding areas. The subsequent uptake and accumulation of metals in different macrophytes are also examined in regard to their phytoremediation potential. Methods Metals like cadmium (Cd), copper (Cu), manganese (Mn), and lead (Pb) were estimated in sediment, water and different parts of the macrophytes Colocasia esculenta and Scirpus articulatus. Results The concentration of metals in sediment were, from highest to lowest, Mn ($205.0{\pm}65.5mg/kg$)>Cu ($29.9{\pm}10.2mg/kg$)>Pb ($22.7{\pm}10.3mg/kg$)>Cd ($3.7{\pm}2.2mg/kg$). The phytoaccumulation tendency of these metals showed similar trends in both native aquatic macrophyte species. The rate of accumulation of metals in roots was higher than in shoots. There were strong positive correlations (p <0.001) between soil organic carbon (OC) percentage and Mn (r =0.771), and sediment OC percentage and Pb (r=0.832). Cation exchange capacity (CEC) also showed a positive correlation (p <0.001) with Cu (r=0.721), Mn (r=0.713), and Pb (r=0.788), while correlations between sediment OC percentage and Cu (r=0.628), sediment OC percentage and Cd (r=0.559), and CEC and Cd (r=0.625) were significant at the p <0.05 level. Conclusions Bioaccumulation factor and translocation factors of these two plants revealed that S. articulatus was comparatively more efficient for phytoremediation, whereas phytostabilization potential was higher in C. esculenta.
