  • Although the drought impacts are comparably not catastrophic, the results from the drought are fatal in various social and economical aspects. Different from other natural hazards including floods, drought advances slowly and spreads widely, so that the preparedness is quite important and effective to mitigate the impacts from drought. Soil moisture depletion directly resulted from rainfall shortage is highly related with drought, especially for crops and vegetations, therefore a drought can be evaluated using soil moisture conditions. In this study, SMI (Soil Moisture Index) was developed to measure a drought condition using soil moisture model and frequency analysis for return periods. Runs theory was applied to quantify the soil moisture depletions for the drought condition in terms of severity, magnitude and duration. In 1994, 1995, 2000, and 2001, Korea had experienced several severe droughts, so the SMI developed was applied to evaluate applicability in the mid-range hydrologic unit watershed scale. From the results, SMI demonstrated the drought conditions with a quite sensitive manner and can be used as an indicator to measure a drought condition.

  • Approximately 80% of rice field in Africa conducts in rainfed (Nishimaki 2017). The rice is damaged by water stress because fields like rainfed lowland repeat drying and humidity of soil because of impossible water control. Then water stress is one of the major limiting factors for decreasing rice yield. So, in initial growth stage, quick and efficient root development is useful way to avoid drought stress by getting water from deeper soil layer with roots elongation as the hypothesis. Daniel et al (2016) reported that NERICA1 and NERICA4 show different patterns of root plasticity for drought stress. NERICA1 has greater development of lateral root in shallow soil layer, while NERICA4 has greater development in deep root elongation to underground. This study was aimed to evaluate the effect of root development in initial growth stage on growing NERICA1 and NERICA4 under different soil moisture condition in rainfed lowland rice field. They were grown in same water condition until 35 days after sowing (35DAS), and after that each varieties were separated in dry and wet condition. The rice plants were grown until 60DAS. The results of soil moisture, the root extension angle, shoot dry weight and bleeding ratio showed that NERICA4 can mitigate dry stress from surface soil compered to NERICA1.

  • Rail transit lines usually pass through many complicated topographies in mountain areas. The influence of inclined bedrock on the train-induced soil vibration response was investigated. Model tests were conducted to comparatively analyze the vibration attenuation under inclined bedrock and horizontal bedrock conditions. A three-dimension numerical model was built to make parameter analysis. The results show that under the horizontal bedrock condition, the peak velocity in different directions was almost the same, while it obviously changed under the inclined bedrock condition. Further, the peak velocity under inclined bedrock condition had a larger value. The peak velocity first increased and then decreased with depth, and the trend of the curve of vibration attenuation with depth presented as a quadratic parabola. The terrain conditions had a significant influence on the vibration responses, and the inclined soil surface mainly affected the shallow soil. The influence of the dip angle of bedrock on the peak velocity and vibration attenuation was related to the directions of the ground surface. As the soil thickness increased, the peak velocity decreased, and as it reached 173% of the embedded pile length, the influence of the inclined bedrock could be neglected.

  • In this study, the soil characteristics are analyzed using the result of various soil tests as an object of the soil layer of natural slopes in landslides areas. Also, the relationship with landslides and interrelation with each soil properties are analyzed. The landslides in three areas with different geological condition are occurred due to heavy rainfall in same time. The geology of Jangheung area, Sangju area and Pohang area is gneiss, granite, and the tertiary sedimentary rock, respectively. However soil characteristics have a little differentiation to geological condition, the soils sampled from landslide area have higher proportion of fine particle and porosity, and lower density than those from non landslide area. In case of same geological condition, landslides are occurred in the terrain slope with high permeability. The permeability is mainly influenced by the soil characteristics such as particle size distribution, porosity, particle structure, and the geological origins such as weathering, sedimentary environment. The soil layer with high internal friction angle is more stable than that with low internal friction angle in all geological condition. The permeability is mainly influenced by effective particle size, coefficient of uniformity, coefficient of gradation, porosity, density and so on. Also, those have interrelation with each factor. These interrelations are similar in all study area. Meanwhile, in proportion as the void ratio and the porosity rises the permeability increases.

  • This study was conducted to analyze the change of soil characteristics effect on the condition of urban forest in Sasang parti located near Sasang Industrial Complex. The results of this study are as follows; 1. Soil hardness is increasing from the area of forest, to the entrance, to facilities in that order. Soil acidity pH4.19∼4.23 in Sasang park indicated a high acidity condition. High levers of K, Na, Mg, Ca are shown in the areas composed of high soil hardness. 2. Pinus thunbergii in the overstory tree layer, Alnus japonica in the understory tree layer, and Rhus sylvestris in the shurb layer are shown respectively as dominant species based on the ground survey and the compution of important value. Pinus thunbergii is decreasing, while Alnus japonica and increasing. 3. Oplismenus undulatifolius which has a strong tolerance for air pollution, is shown as a dominant species of herbaceous plants in Sasang park. There are 10 species of Harbaceous in Sasang park compared to 20 species in Molundae park. This shows that deversity in herbaceous plants are imported by air pollution. 4. Species diversity indices of Sasang park is 0.8738∼0.9700 compared to 1.0817∼ 1.233 in Molundae park is due to the good condition of soil environment in addition to air pollution effects. 5. The vitality of Pinus thunbergii is 16.41∼20.42ER in Sasang park, and 12.42∼ 16.81ER, in Molundae park. This shows that tree vitality are impacted by soil characteristics. The regression analysis between tree vitality and soil environment shows the effects of is soil hardness, soil moisture, soil acidity, K, Na, Mg, Ca.

  • Helical steel piles are being widely used in foundation for the buildings in urban areas because of their high compressive and tensile capacities. Helical steel piles have many advantages; ease installation, a vibration-free and low level of noise process, and so on. However, the most researches are about the capacity of helical steel piles under uplift condition. Therefore, this paper focuses on the capacity under compressive loading according to the soil condition. The bearing capacity of helical steel piles varies with the diameter of the helix and shaft and the bearing area of helical steel piles is not always identical with the sum of helix and shaft area due to the difference of each bearing mechanism. Therefore, the experiment with the parameters of the ratio of helix and shaft diameter and soil condition will be carried out to survey the effective helix area under a given soil condition for the bearing capacity of helical steel piles.

  • Urea intercalated into montmorillonite (MT) exhibits remarkably enhanced N use efficiency, maintaining its fast effectiveness. This study dealt with the release property of urea from metal-urea-clay hybrid with MT (MUCH) under continuous-flow conditions and the cumulative impacts of its successive application on physicochemical properties of soils. Releases of urea were completed within 4 hrs under continuous-flow condition regardless of the types and the leaching solutions. However, urea release property was significantly affected by both the form of fertilizer and the presence of electrolytes in solution. The fast release property of urea from MUCH in continuous-flow condition was not significantly affected by soil properties such as soil pH and soil texture. In addition, its successive application did not lead to any noticeable change in soil physicochemical properties, water stable aggregate rate, water holding capacity and cation exchange capacity in both sandy loam and clay loam soils. Therefore, this study strongly supported that urea intercalated into MT could be applied as fast-effective N fertilizer, in particular for additional N supply.

  • Characteristics of sedimentation of dredged soil is depended on the field condition and characteristics of dredged soil because dredged fill ground was formed by various field condition, sedimentation and self-weight consolidation process of dredged soil. Dredged fill ground is formed as separated sedimentary layer by characteristics of dredged soil. Therefore, it requires some special test method to consider a various field condition, characteristics of sedimentation and self-weight consolidation of dredged soil. In this study, in order to identify the characteristics of sedimentation of dredged soil with disposing velocity geo-centrifuge test and laser particle size analyzer were performed. As a results, river and mixed dredged soil show the separation sedimentation by soil particle size. And sedimentation of clayey dredged soil is parallel to the bottom surface of dredged fill space.
