Model pile tests, using a calibration chamber in which the stress state and the relative density can be controlled, were performed in order to study the effects of pile diameter on the plugging rate and bearing capacity of open-ended pile. The model piles used in the test series were devised so that the bearing capacity of an open-ended pile could be measured out into three components. The test results showed that fully plugging depth of an open -ended pile increased with increase in pile diameter and soil density. Moreover, it was found that unit plug capacity decreased with increase in pile diameter, though the penetration ratio or plugging rate of piles was constant. However, the existing formulae for estimation of plug capacity give plug capacity which is constant or increased with increase in pile diameter, when penetration ratio or plugging rate of piles is equal. Thus, it is proposed that the effect of pile diameter as well as plugging rate on bearing capacity of pile must be considered in plug capacity estimation.

The manufacturing of the solid fuel using wastes has been studied on the purpose of the reduction of green house gases and the profit-making as alternative fuel, and thus, it has become as technically improved as to be used as business. However, the production of solid fuel with multi-wastes combination needs a caution while the solid fuel with one-waste has not a significant component change. This study analyzes the solid fuel components through the practical plant experiment to the various wastes. The resulted data shows a different pattern than the theoretical one in the component analysis, and it can be concluded that the adequate uniform mixing has a great influence on the manufacturing of the solid soil.

At the present time, annually about 2 million tons of coal ashes are generated from thermal power plants in Korea, however, they are dumped into ash ponds mixed with sea water very expensively. In this thesis, engineering characteristics of bituminous and anthracite ashes are studied to utilize them as construction materials. The coal ash is non-plactic material and its grain size falls in the range of silt, but it has better soil engineering characteristics than general soils of same grain size. For example, the permeability, shearing strength, CBR, and consolidation properties match to that of sandy soils, moreover, strengthening by hydration can be expected with the lapse of year because of CaO presence in the components. So, utilizing those coal ashes in a productive way as reclamation or banking materials is expected.

This research conducted component analysis of pellet fuel using livestock waste and agricultural by-product and combustion characteristics. As the result of analyzing the characteristics of solid fuel using livestock waste, three components, element analysis, and heating value were suitable for the standard of solid fuel. In addition, content of ash consisted of high concentration of K, P, Na indicating the possibile usage as a soil conditioner. However, it was not suitable for solid fuel using only livestock waste due to the relatively low heating value. To improve the heating value and early ignition, we mixed agricultural by-products (i.e., chaff and sawdust) into livestock waste. The mixed material showed significant increase of combustibles and heating value with decrease of moisture content compared to the livestock waste only.

This study was carried out to characterize sources of suspended particulate matter(SPM) in Mt. Soback area from January to Novembver in 1993. The collection and major water soluble ion analysis of SPM were conducted by using a High Volumn Air Sampler(HVAS; W&A Inc., PM-10) and ion chromatograph(DIONEX 4000i), respectively. The variations of SPM and major ion concentrations were found to be 9. sim. 156.mu.g/ $m^{3}$, $F^{-10}$ 0.00 .sim. 0.15.mu.g/ $m^{3}$, C $l^{-10}$ 0.06 .sim. 3.79.mu.g/ $m^{3}$, N $O_{3}$$^{-10}$ 0.90 .sim. 6.85.mu.g/ $m^{3}$, S $O_{4}$$^{2-}$ 1.99 .sim. 9.36.mu.g/ $m^{3}$ N $a^{+}$0.00 .sim. 0.27.mu.g/ $m^{3}$, N $H_{4}$$^{+}$0.72 .sim. 5.77.mu.g/ $m^{3}$, $k^{+}$0.03 .sim. 0.88.mu.g/ $m^{3}$ and $Ca^{2+}$0.12 .sim. 2.76.mu.g/ $m^{3}$. Tree sources were identified by Principal Component Amalysis(PCA) using a SPSS/P $C^{+}$. The explanation ability of forst, second and third Principal Component were 60.8%, 13.6%, 8.2%, of total variance. The sources classfied by PCA were found to be secondary aerosol/fuel combustion, soil dust related cement production/yellow sand and aerosol related waste burning.related waste burning.g.

U.S. cotton production is suffering from the yield loss caused by the reniform nematode (RN), Rotylenchulus reniformis. Management of this devastating pest is of utmost importance because, no upland cotton cultivar exhibits adequate resistance to RN. Nine populations of RN from distinct regions in Alabama and one population from Mississippi were studied and thirteen morphometric features were measured on 20 male and 20 female nematodes from each population. Highly correlated variables (positive) in female and male RN morphometric parameters were observed for body length (L) and distance of vulva from the lip region (V) (r = 0.7) and tail length (TL) and c' (r = 0.8), respectively. The first and second principal components for the female and male populations showed distinct clustering into three groups. These results show pattern of sub-groups within the RN populations in Alabama. A one-way ANOVA on female and male RN populations showed significant differences ($p{\leq}0.05$) among the variables. Multiple sequence alignment (MSA) of 18S rRNA sequences (421) showed lengths of 653 bp. Sites within the aligned sequences were conserved (53%), parsimony-informative (17%), singletons (28%), and indels (2%), respectively. Neighbor-Joining analysis showed intra and inter-nematodal variations within the populations as clone sequences from different nematodes irrespective of the sex of nematode isolate clustered together. Morphologically, the three groups (I, II and III) could not be distinctly associated with the molecular data from the 18S rRNA sequences. The three groups may be identified as being non-geographically contiguous.
In this paper, we constructed the integrated watershed model system, SWAT-Nak Dong that include areal mean precipitaiton, runoff and water balance components in the Nak Dong river basins and with this model system we are capable of estimating streamflows for ungaged river stations and analyzing the variations of the streamflows. SWAT(Soil and Water Assessment Tool) is a conceptual, continous time model that was developed in the early 1990s to assist water resource managers in assessing the impact of management and climate on water supplies and non-point source pollution III watersheds and large river basins. Using the SWAT-Nak Dong system and various scenarios, we analyzed and evaluated the dams and water uses effects on the streamflows.
A new methyltrophic bacterium which utilizes methanol as a sole source of carbon and energy was isolated from soil. It was Gram-negative, nonmotile, nonspore-forming rod, and strictly aerobic bacterium. Catalase and oxidase activities were present. Nitrate was reduced to nitrite. Vitamins and other growth factors were not required. Generation time was 1.6 hr under the optimal condition. The isolate assimilated methanol via the ribulose mono-phosphate pathway (Enter-Doudoroff varient) and did not have .alpha.-ketoglutarate dehydrogenase. It assimilated ammonia through glutamate dehydrogenase. The guanine plus cytosine content of the DNA was 61.0 mol%. The celular fatty acid composition was primarily straight-chain saturated $C^{16 : 0}$ acids (palmitic acids) and unsaturated $C_{16 :1}$ acid (palmitoleic acids), and the isolate also contained two unidentified $C_{17}$ branched fatty acids. The major ubiquinone was Q-8, and Q-6 and Q-7 were present as minor components. Phosphatidylethanolamine and phosphatidylglycerol were predominantly present, and diphosphatidyglycerol was also detected. Based on the physiological and biochemical properties, the isolate was assigned to a novel species of the genus Methylobacillus, Methylobacillus methanolovorus sp. nov.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons(PAHs) have known as potentially hazardous air pollutants(HAPs0 to human health because of its carcinogenic and mutagenic behaviors. The purpose of this study was to determine the level of 6 PAHs(Fluoranthene, Pyrene, Benzo[a]anthracene, Chrysene, Benzo[b]fluoranthene, and Benzo[a]pyrene) as well as 10 inorganic elements(Cr, Na, K, Zn, Pb, Fe, Cu, Ti, Al and Cd) in the ambient PM-10. The total of 115 samples had been collected from February, 1996 to June, 1996 on quartz fiber by a PM-10 high volume air sampler near the Yong-Tong Apartment complexes. A statistical analysis was performed for the PAHs and inorganic elements data set using a principal component analysis in order to identify qualitatively the potential sources of PM-10. A total of 6 principal components were separated by intensive data pretrement and transformation processes, such as soil, refuse incineration, oil burning, coal burning, field burning, vehicle emission sources. The results showed that PAHs were associated with various burning activities like refuse and field burning, coal burning, and oil burning emissions in the study area. These derived sources were well matched with the previously known source profiles in terms of compositonal order and level of measured species. The combination data set consisted of both organic and inorganic species might provide more powerful source signature and might increase the number of potentially derived sources than PAHs or inorganic data alone.
The purpose of this study is to provide the ways of recycling of by-product limes as lightweight fill, backfill materials, and lightweight blocks by performing experimental study. New lightweight fill materials and blocks were devised by mixing by-product lime, weathered granite soil, small pieces of waste EPS, and Portland cement. Physical, geotechnical, and environmental properties of the lightweight mixed soils and blocks were analysed by laboratory experiments for mixed samples manufactured with various mixing ratios. KMS tests were also performed to evaluate the concentration variation of the chemical components of the light weight blocks leachates. It is expected that this study will contribute to resolving the problem of by-product lime disposal as well as to recycling the by-product limes as fill materials and blocks.
