Soil nailing, as an effective stabilizing method for slopes and excavations, has been widely used worldwide. However, the interaction mechanism of a soil nail and the surrounding soil and its influential factors are not well understood. A pullout model using a hyperbolic shear stress-shear strain relationship is proposed to describe the load-deformation behavior of a cement grouted soil nail. Numerical analysis has been conducted to solve the governing equation and the distribution of tensile force along the nail length is investigated through a parametric study. The simulation results are highly consistent with laboratory soil nail pullout test results in the literature, indicating that the proposed model is efficient and accurate. Furthermore, the effects of key parameters, including normal stress, degree of saturation of soil, and surface roughness of soil nail, on the model parameters are studied in detail.

The optimal design of floating type fisheries facilities in the open sea is demanded considering with the severe hydrodynamic forces on floating body, mooring tension and holding force of anchor. For conserving the facilities in most effective state, design and selection of anchor system is one of the most important fundamental subject. To enhance the design procedure of anchor system the holding forces of anchor are investigated by the hydraulic model test and are compared with the typical conventional results for various anchors. Applicability of previous estimation methods of holding force are checked and holding mechanism of anchor is discussed. Using the results a new computational concept of holding force is suggested considering mainly the effects of passive soil pressure (resistance), steady soil pressure, and surface friction etc. The new estimation method is proved as a feasible one by comparing the results of hydraulic model experiments. Applicability of various anchors to the anchor system on open sea fisheries structures is comprehensively reviewed using the present model tests and previous study results in the viewpoint of economy, construction and stability etc. Using the results, fundamental anchoring system design procedures are suggested to apply huge marine ranching complex with increase of the holding capacity of anchor under the optimum cost.
This is a study on rectangular-shaped passive row piles in inclined sand-ground by model tests. The experiment controlled the angle of inclination of ground and induced the ground destruction. We also measured the behavior of row piles, by adjusting the shape, position and spacing of piles. As a result, we confirmed the earth pressure, the lateral resistance, and the effect of depressing on the ground variation working on passive pile. The effect of B-type pile of which the front width is wide is bigger than that of H-type pile of which the side width is wide. We can find out the failure angle of slope, the shared force of pile and soil by using the lateral resistance graph based on slope angle.
This study proposes a conceptual framework of in-situ vibration tests and analyses for quality appraisal of non-slender, cast-in-place piles with irregular cross-section configuration. It evaluates a frequency index from vibration recordings to a series of impulse loadings that is related to total soil-resistance forces around a pile, so as to assess if the pile achieves the design requirement in terms of bearing capacity. In particular, in-situ pile-vibration tests in sequential are carried out, in which dropping a weight from different heights generates series impulse loadings with low-to-high amplitudes. The high-amplitude impulse is designed in way that the load will generate equivalent static load that is equal to or larger than the designed bearing capacity of the pile. This study then uses empirical mode decomposition and Hilbert spectral analysis for processing the nonstationary, short-period recordings, so as to single out with accuracy the frequency index. Comparison of the frequency indices identified from the recordings to the series loadings with the design-based one would tell if the total soil resistance force remains linear or nonlinear and subsequently for the quality appraisal of the pile. As an example, this study investigates six data sets collected from the in-situ tests of two piles in Taipu water pump project, Jiangshu Province of China. It concludes that the two piles have the actual axial load capacity higher than the designed bearing capacity. The true bearing capacity of the piles under investigation can be estimated with accuracy if the amplitude of impact loadings is further increased and the analyses are calibrated with the static testing results.
In this study, an assessment method was proposed to evaluate the pullout resistance between geosynthetic and backill soil by using a stress-strain relationship of the orthotropic composite material subjected to both longitudinal and vertical loadings. For this analysis friction characteristics of geosynthetic-soil and stress-strain relationships subjected to soil confined pressure were investigated by performing the laboratory pullout tests for three types of geosynthetics and performing the confined extension tests far seven types of geosynthetics having geotextiles, composite geosynthetics and geogrids. A comparison was made between unconfined an confined moduli far each geosynthetic material to quantify the soil confinement effect on stress-strain properties. A comparison was also made between the relative increase of moduli at the same strain level among the seven geosynthetic materials to demonstrate the different responses of these geosynthetic materials under soil confinement. Based on the proposed procedure, it was shown that values of the increased tensile force are applicable fur the evaluation of friction strengths between five types of geosynthetics and sands in light of the soil confinement effect.

This study introduces soil resistance multipliers at locations encompassed by the zone of influence of the helix plate to consider the added lateral resistance provided to the helical pile. The zone of influence of a helix plate is a function of its diameter and serves as a boundary condition for the modified soil resistance springs. The concept is based on implementing p-multipliers as a reduction factor for piles in group action. The application of modified p-y springs in the analysis of helical piles allows for better characterization and understanding of the lateral behavior of helical piles, which will help further the development of design methods. To execute the proposed method, a finite difference program, HPCap (Helical Pile Capacity), was developed by the authors using Matlab. The program computes the deflection, shear force, bending moment, and soil resistance of the helical pile and allows the user to freely input the value of the zone of influence and Ω (a coefficient that affects the value of the p-multiplier). Results from ten full-scale lateral load tests on helical piles embedded at depths of 3.0 m with varying shaft diameters, shaft thicknesses, and helix configurations were analyzed to determine the zone of influence and the magnitude of the p-multipliers. The analysis determined that the value of the p-multipliers is influenced by the ratio between the pile embedment length and the shaft diameter (Dp), the effective helix diameter (Dh-Dp), and the zone of influence. Furthermore, the zone of influence is recommended to be 1.75 times the helix diameter (Dh). Using the numerical analysis method presented in this study, the predicted deflections of the various helical pile cases showed good agreement with the observed field test results.

The touch down zone (TDZ) and top connection point of the vessel are most critical part of fatigue damage in the steel catenary riser (SCR). In general, the linear soil model has been used to evaluate fatigue performance of SCRs because it gives conservative results in the TDZ. However, the conservative linear soil model shows the limitation to accommodate real behavior in the TDZ as water depth is increased. Therefore, the riser behavior on soft clay seabed is investigated using a nonlinear soil model through time domain approach in this study. The numerical analysis considering various important parameters of the nonlinear soil model such as shear strength at mudline, shear strength gradient and suction resistance force is conducted to check the adoptability and applicability of nonlinear soil model for SCR design.
The steel plate-girder bridges with concrete gravity piers have possibilities of overturning by lateral inertial force which can be reproduced by sudden earthquake attack. This paper explores an overturning mechanism of existing concrete gravity pier onto the sandy soil in the event of lateral push-over load by in-situ experimental observation. The in-situ push-over experiment for pier with earth anchors between spread footing and rock beds exhibits a reasonable enhancement of ductility against overturning. In unanchored system, a flexural crack at cold joint of concrete pier is not developed because of the over-turning of the pier. This leads a global instability (rotation) of pier-footing system with relatively low stresses in pier itself. While a lateral load is persistently increased in anchored system, the successive flexural cracking failure at cold joint is observed even after the local shear failure of soil due to redistribution of stress equilibrium between soil and pier structure as long as a tensile action of anchor cable is active.

This study proposes a penetration model in soil considering the wake separation and reattachment based on the integrated force law (IFL). Rigid body dynamics, the IFL, and semi-empirical resistance function about soil are utilized to formulate the motion of the hard projectile. The model can predict the trajectory in soil considering the spherical cavity expansion phenomenon under various oblique angles and angles of attack (AOA). The Mohr-Coulomb yield model is utilized as the resistance function of the soil. To confirm the feasibility of the proposed model, a comparative study is conducted with experimental results described in the open literature. From the comparative study, the penetration depth estimated from the proposed model had about 13.4% error compared to that of the experimental results. In general, the finite element method is widely used to predict the trajectory in soil for a projectile. However, it takes considerable time to construct the computational model for the projectile and perform the numerical simulation. The proposed model only needs to the dimension of the projectile and can predict the trajectory of the projectile in a few seconds.
This study was carried out to investigate experimentally the effect of the tire inflation pressure of a tractor on soil compaction and tractive performance. Two kinds of field experiments were conducted using an agricultural tractor. One experiment is concerned with the tractive performance of the tractor at the three levels of tire inflation pressure; 50kpa, 100kpa and 200kpa, and the other one is about the soil compaction at the four levels of tire inflation pressure; 50kpa, 100kpa, 150kpa and 200kpa, at three different numbers of passes; 1, 3 and 5 passes. From the results of the field experiment, it was found that decreasing the tire inflation pressure decreased the motion resistance of tractor and increased the tractive force and tractive efficiency. The tractive and working performance of the tractor could be improved by the reduction of tire inflation pressure. Increasing the inflation pressure and the number of passes increased the soil compaction. Rate of compaction increased rapidly at the first pass and declined at subsequent passes. To reduce the effect of soil compaction for the whole field, it is recommended that tractor should follow the rut of the first pass from the subsequent passes, and decrease the inflation pressure of the driving tires up to allowable minimum level.
