Chemical characteristics and their interrelationships of 156 soils included by 74 sandy loam and 82 loam soils collected from plastic film house in Chungbuk area were investigated from 1998 to 2001. Seventeen chemical properties including pH, organic matter (OM), electrical conductivity (EC), inorganic nitrogen, available phosphorus, exchangeable cations, CEC, etc., were analyzed by correlation, standardized partial regression coefficient, and principal factor analysis. Standardized partial regression coefficients of chemical properties were estimated to determine the degree of contribution of EC and OM contents in soils. Principal factor analysis was applied to classify the studied chemical properties into different groups having similar chemical properties. The pH of experimental soils ranged from 4.24 to 7.14 and 4.95 to 7.35 for loam and sandy loam soils, respectively. The EC of soils varied from 0.93 to $15.65dS\;m^{-1}$ for loam and $0.91{\sim}22.30dS\;m^{-1}$ for sandy loam soils, respectively with significant differences among them. The EC measured by 1:5 $H_2O$ dilution method and saturation method were significantly related with 8.163 and 8.599 as the slopes of regression equation for loam and sandy loam soils, respectively. These slopes more than 8.0 in this regression equation was higher than the slope of 5.0 that is estimated from dilution coefficient suggesting that EC measured by 1:5 dilution method might be erratic. The standardized partial regression coefficient of different chemical properties for the estimation of EC was in the order of $NO_3{^-}$ > $Cl^-$ > OM > exchangeable Mg for loam soils and $NO_3{^-}$ > exchangeable Mg > $Cl^-$ for sandy loam soils. Contribution order of the chemical properties based on standardized partial regression coefficient differed 1:5 dilution method and saturation method, indicating that different chemical compounds might be present in the extract solutions of these two methods. Consequently the measurement of EC by saturation method was thought be still better for estimation of chemical property because accuracy of EC measurement by 1:5 dilution method can't be improved by any specific coefficient for adjustment of EC. Regardless of differences in soil textures and extraction methods, correlation coefficients between EC and the other chemical properties were routinely in the order of $NO_3{^-}$ > $Cl^-$ > degree of base saturation > exchangeable Mg > exchangeable Ca > $SO{_4}^{2-}$. The principal factor analysis revealed four factor groups of the chemical properties studied. The groups for sandy loam were as follows; ; 1. salt components, 2. soil reaction components, 3. fixed and adsorption components, 4. CEC components. The groupings of loam soils were similar to sandy loam except that exchangeable Na substituted the CEC of sandy loam.
The behaviour of insectcide ethoprophos (O-ethyl S,S-propyl phosphorodithioate) in soil was investigated. In a laboratory study, the degradation of ethoprophos in soil followed first-order reaction kinetics. The half-life of the insecticide in the soil incubated with 10, 18 and $25^{\circ}C$ was 12.4, 5.5 and 2.5 days, respectively. Arrhenius activation energy was 73.8 KJ/mole. The half-life was 46.4, 17.6 and 6.9 day in the soil with 7, 14 and 19% of soil water content, respectively. The moisture dependence B value in empirical equation was 1.67. The adsorption isotherm for ethoprophos in the soil agreed with freundlich equation. The adsorption distribution coefficient (Kd) was 0.27. In a field study prepared in autumn with undisturbed soil column in a mini-lysimeter system, ethoprophos residues were largely distributed in the top $0{\sim}2cm$ soil layer and moved down to the top 6cm soil layer. Persistence of ethoprophos in field soil was correlated with variation in weather pattern during the period of experiments. The half-life of ethoprophos treated at March and October was about 17 and 5 days, respectively. The ethoprophos woil was degraded up to 90% at 37day after the both treatment. In persistence and mobility of ethoprophos in field soil, the observed data were reasonably corresponded with predicted data by some computer model of pesticide behaviour.

BACKGROUND: Petroleum-contaminated soil from leaking above- and underground storage tanks and spillage during transport of petroleum products is widespread environmental problem in recent years. Application of compost may be the most promising, cost-effective, and eco-friendly technology for soil bioremediation because of its advantages over physical and chemical technology. The objective of this study was to evaluate effect of compost application on degradation of total petroleum hydrocarbon (TPH) in petroleum hydrocarbon-contaminated soil.METHOD AND RESULTS: An arable soil was artificially contaminated by diesel, and compost was applied at the different rate of 0, 10, 30, and 50 Mg/ha. Concentration of TPH in the soil decreased as application rate of compost increased. Degradation efficiency was highest at compost 30 Mg/ha; however, it slightly decreased with compost 50 Mg/ha. Kinetic modeling was performed to estimate the rates of chemical reaction. The correlation coefficient (R2) values for the linear plots using the second-order model were higher than those using the first-oder model. Compost 30 and 50 Mg/ha had the fastest TPH degradation rate in the second-order model. Change of microbial population in soil with compost application was similar to that of TPH. Microbial population in the soil increased as application rate of compost increased. Increasing microbial population in the contaminated soil corresponded to decreased in TPH concentration.CONCLUSION: Conclusively, compost application for soil bioremediation could be an effective response to petroleum hydrocarbon-contaminated soil. The increase in microbial population with compost suggested that compost application at an optimum rate might enhance degradation of TPH in soil.

Since fine dust (PM10) has a significant influence on soil and groundwater composition during dry and wet deposition processes, it is of a vital importance to understand the fate and transport of aerosol in geological environments. Fine dust is formed after the chemical reaction of several precursors, typically observed in short intervals within a few hours. In this study, deep learning approach was applied to predict the fate of fine dust in an urban area. Deep learning training was performed by combining convolutional neural network (CNN) and recurrent neural network (RNN) techniques. The PM10 concentration after 1 hour was predicted based on three-hour data by setting SO2, CO, O3, NO2, and PM10 as training data. The obtained coefficient of determination value, R2, was 0.8973 between predicted and measured values for the entire concentration range of PM10, suggesting deep learning method can be developed into a reliable and viable tool for prediction of fine dust concentration.
The long-term performance of plates resting on viscoelastic foundations is a major concern in the analysis of soil-structure interaction. As a powerful mathematical tool, fractional calculus may address these plate-on-foundation problems. In this paper, a fractionalized Zener model is proposed to study the time-dependent behavior of a uniformly loaded rectangular thin foundation plate. By use of the viscoelastic-elastic correspondence principle and the Laplace transforms, the analytical solutions were obtained in terms of the Mittag-Leffler function. Through the analysis of a numerical example, the calculated plate deflection, bending moment and foundation reaction were compared to those from ideal elastic and standard viscoelastic models. It is found that the upper and lower bound solutions of the plate response estimated by the proposed model can be determined using the elastic model. Based on a parametric study, the impacts of model parameters on the long-term performance of a foundation plate were systematically investigated. The results show that the two spring stiffnesses govern the upper and lower bound solutions of the plate response. By varying the values of the fractional differential order and the coefficient of viscosity, the time-dependent behavior of a foundation plate can be accurately captured. The fractional differential order seems to be dependent on the mechanical properties of the ground soil. A sandy foundation will have a small fractional differential order while in order to simulate the creeping of clay foundation, a larger fractional differential order value is needed. The fractionalized Zener model is capable of accounting for the primary and secondary consolidation processes of the foundation soil and can be used to predict the plate performance over many decades of time.
In order to illustrate adsorption phenomena of herbicides(alachlor and paraquat) on soils, absorption equation of herbicides and the relationships between soil properties and adsorption constants were investigated with 22 soils. The results were as follows : 1. The shaking time for approaching equillibrium reaction of herbicides(alachlor and paraquat) with woils were about 30 minutes for paraquat and 4 hours for alachlor, respectively. 2. The distribution coefficients of alachlor were inbetween 0.81-33.83 in 5 ppm and 0.09-15.52 in 50 ppm, respectively. 3. The adsorption of alachlor was positively correlated with organic matter and paraquat was with clay content of soils. 4. Both paraquat and alachlor were highly adsorbed in Chunpo series soil containing low contents of organic matter and clay on account of different mechanism from other soils, 5. Freundlich's adsorption constant(K) was greater than distribution coefficient(Kd), and the differences between K and Kd's were to be increased with increasing equillibrium concentrations.

To predict behaviors of offshore wind turbines which are highly laterally loaded structures and to design them rationally, evaluating the soil-foundation interaction is important. Nowadays, there are many soil modeling methods for structural analysis of general structures subjected to vertical loads, but using the methods without any consideration for design of a monopile foundation is eschewed because it might cause wrong structural design due to the deferent loading state. In this paper, we identify the differences of the member forces and displacements by design methods. The results show that fixed end method is barely suitable for monopile design in terms of checking the serviceability because it underestimate the lateral displacement. Fixed end method and stiffness matrix method underestimate the member forces, whereas virtual fixed end method overestimates them. The results of p-y curve method and coefficient of subgrade reaction method are similar to the results of 3D soil modeling method, and 2D soil modeling method overestimates the displacement and member forces as compared with other methods.
In this study, a study related to laboratory and pilot test were performed to use an environmental soil stabilizer developed to induce a hardening reaction similar to that of Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC) by using industrial by-products of blast furnace slag and the combustion ash of a circulating fluidized bed boiler as the main material. For this, specimens were prepared using liquid A of sodium silicate and silica sol, and liquid B of an environmental soil stabilizer (or OPC), and laboratory tests were performed to analyze the strength and environmental characteristics. And pilot test was performed on the aging reservoir, field permeability test and electrical resistivity survey were performed in the field to analyze the applicability. As a result of the laboratory test, the homo-gel compressive strength of the chemical injection material using the environmental soil stabilizer as liquid B was about 2.88 to 3.23 times greater than that of OPC. In addition, the elution amount of most heavy metals was lower than that of OPC, and the survival rate in the fish, acute toxicity test was 100%. Therefore, when judged based on the results of the laboratory test, it was analyzed to be superior to OPC in terms of strength and environment. In the results of the pilot test in the aging reservoir, when the environmental soil stabilizer was reinforced with liquid B of the chemical injection material, the coefficient of permeability in the aging reservoir decreased to 1/50 level. In addition, as a result of the electrical resistivity survey, it was analyzed that the electrical resistivity inside the aging reservoir increased as time passed, the saturation zone disappeared, and the overall reinforcement.
To improvement the swelling characteristics of the existing cutoff wall against the moisture, the permeability of the sand, calcium bentonite and solidifier mixture according to the contact with trichloroethylene (TCE) was evaluated. Characteristics analysis and the permeability test of the research materials were performed. The permeability was decreased as the mixing ratio of the calcium bentonite was increased and it was increased as the mixing ratio of the solidifier was increased. In conclusion, when mixing 15% of calcium bentonite and more than 30% of solidifier, the permeability coefficient in the underground water movement was analyzed as more than α × 10-4 cm/sec showing that it does not block the underground water movement. In addition, as the permeability coefficient of mixtures after TCE reaction was analyzed as less than α ×10-7 cm/sec, it satisfied the condition of blocking layer (less than 1.0 × 10-6 cm/sec). Therefore, the calcium bentonite and solidifier can be utilized as barrier that showing the characteristic of percolation ability conversion in soil and underground water contaminated with TCE.
To reinforce bearing capacity-changed section or different foundation in the same building, empirical or simple tools have been used. To solve this problem, an analytical solution which can evaluate and reinforce the stability of foundation is introduced. To suggest a clue for the problems, current foundation reinforcing method is studied through recent literature studies and the structural analyses of foundation slab are performed on the pile foundation of 49$m^2$, 59$m^2$ and 84$m^2$ I type apartments in 15 story building. The analyses are conducted with SAP 2000, a computer program for ordinary structural analysis. To predict the moments of slab by ground non-uniformity, the structural analysis results for the foundation slab of 3 types 15 story apartment buildings in 49$m^2$, 59$m^2$ and 84$m^2$ I type on non-uniformity ground are shown in the diagrams.
