  • This study was conducted to compare the physical and chemical properties of soils in Quercus acutissima, Q. mongolica, Q. serrata, and Q. variabilis stands. A total of 423 plots (Q. acutissima 72 plots, Q. mongolica 150 plots, Q. serrata 97 plots, and Q. variabilis: 104 plots) were examined to determine the soil properties of A and B horizons throughout the country. The physical and chemical properties of soils were significantly different among the four different Quercus spp. stands. The sand content in both horizons was significantly higher in Q. acutissima stands than in the other three oak stands, whereas the clay content was lowest among the four stands. The soils in Q. mongolica and Q. serrata stands were more acidified than those in Q. acutissima and Q. variabilis stands. The concentrations of organic carbon and total nitrogen in both soil depths were significantly higher in Q. mongolica stands than in Q. serrata, Q. variabilis, and Q. acutissima stands. The content of available phosphorus was significantly higher in Q. mongolica and Q. serrata stands than in Q. acutissima and Q. variabilis stands; whereas the contents of exchangeable potassium, calcium, and magnesium were lower in Q. mongolica and Q. serrata stands than in Q. acutissima and Q. variabilis stands. The cation exchange capacity was highest in Q. mongolica stands, followed by that in Q. serrata, Q. variabilis, and Q. acutissima stands. These data indicate the need to design a nutrient management plan to enhance the low soil pH and exchangeable cation in Q. mongolica and Q. serrata stands.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the physical and chemical properties of soils in Saemangeum reclaimed lands. The investigated areas were total 5,020 ha which included 220 ha for Agricultural Life site, 2,450 ha for Tourism & Leisure site, 1,130 ha for Industrial & Research site, 820 ha for Bioenergy crop production site, and 400 ha for Rural City site. Soil samples consisting of the upper 20 cm from the surface were collected in every $200m{\times}500m$ of the each site in March and September, 2015. Particle size distribution of soils in the reclaimed land was 83.2% sand, 8.6% silt and 8.2% clay in average. Soil texture was distributed as 40.8% sandy soil, 35.5% loamy sand, and 19.7% sandy loam. Based on the investigation of soil chemical properties conducted in March, 2015, soil pH, electrical conductivity of a saturated soil paste extract (ECe), and exchangeable (Exch.) $K^+$ and $Mg^{2+}$ concentrations were higher than those of the optimum levels for upland soil, whereas soil organic matter content, available (Avail.) phosphate concentration, and Exch. $Ca^{2+}$ concentration were lower than those of the optimum ranges. Depending on the results of the soil chemical properties measured in September, 2015, soil pH, ECe, and Exch. $K^+$ concentration were higher than those of the optimum levels, but soil organic matter, Avail. phosphate, and Exch. $Ca^{2+}$ concentration were lower than the optimum ranges. In addition, distribution of sodic soil ranged between 41.4% and 50.0%, and saline soils were from 16.4 to 31.8%. Soils with pH values above 7.0 increased from 15.3% in March to 35.2% in September. Soils with ECe values over $4.8dS\;m^{-1}$ increased from 45.6% to 50.7%, whereas soils with the values below $2.0dS\;m^{-1}$ decreased from 42.8% to 36.9%.

  • Predicting forest productivity is essential to evaluate sustainable forest management or to enhance forest ecosystem services. Ordinary least squares (OLS) and partial least squares (PLS) regression models were used to develop predictive models for forest productivity (site index) from the site characteristics and soil profile, along with soil physical and chemical properties, of 112 Quercus mongolica stands. The adjusted coefficients of determination (adjusted R2) in the regression models were higher for the site characteristics and soil profile of B horizon (R2=0.32) and of A horizon (R2=0.29) than for the soil physical and chemical properties of B horizon (R2=0.21) and A horizon (R2=0.09). The PLS models (R2=0.20-0.32) were better predictors of site index than the OLS models (R2=0.09-0.31). These results suggest that the regression models for Q. mongolica can be applied to predict the forest productivity, but new variables may need to be developed to enhance the explanatory power of regression models.

  • In order to establish the fertilization and soil management method in Gyehwa reclaimed tidal land, we investigated soil property and actual farming condition. Soil properties of 100 field paddy soil and farming surveys of 177 farm households were conducted. Average of effective soil depth was 17.8 cm, which was very smaller than the optimum level 50 cm. The hardness and bulk density of subsoil were $12.40kg\;cm^{-2}$ and $1.59g\;cm^{-3}$, respectively. These results showed that soil physical condition of Gyehwa reclaimed tidal land was very poor. Soil salinity ranged from 0.03 to 0.12%, and average of pH was 6.0, which implied that desalinization of Gyehwa reclaimed tidal land was progressed. However, soil nutrients in Gyehwa reclaimed tidal land were very unbalanced conditions as following, available phosphate $58mg\;kg^{-1}$, available silicate $85mg\;kg^{-1}$, cation exchangeable capacity $7.4cmolc\;kg^{-1}$ and organic matter $8.6g\;kg^{-1}$. On the farm household in Gyehwa reclaimed tidal land, fertilization amounts were $200-54-61(N-P_2O_5-K_2O)kg\;ha^{-1}$ They mainly practiced spring tillage(84%) rather than autumn tillage(16%), and only 14% of them applied rice straw annually in the paddy soil.

  • This experiment was designed to find out the effects of soil conditioner, Polyacrylamide (PAM) and Bitumen, on the changes of soil aggregate properties and crop yields. The soil conditioners were treated at the rates of 0.5% and 1% to sandy loam and silty clay loam soils. The aggregate stability, wetting angle, mean weight diameter and air permeability were analyzed. Pot experiments were carried out to investigate the soybean growths and soil property changes after the soil conditioners were sprayed to surface soils. Soil aggregate stability was increased remarkably by the soil conditioner, PAM and Bitumen, treatments. PAM was more effective in sandy loam than silty clay loam, but Bitumen was better in silty clay loam. Wetting angle of the soil was changed slightly by PAM treatment, but it was greatly changed to hydrophobic by Bitumen treatment. Air permeability, water infiltration rate and moisture retention of the soils were increased by surface application of soil conditioners, PAM and Bitumen. The growths of soybean in conditioner applicated pots were better than those of untreated pots from early stage, and the yields were increased 6-13%.

  • 180 different 2D numerical analyses have been carried out to estimate the factor of safety (FOS) for rooted slopes. Four different types of vegetated coverage and a variety of slope geometry considering three types of soil have been evaluated in this study. The highly influenced parameters on the slope's FOS are determined. They have been chosen as the input parameters for developing a new practical relationship to estimate the FOS with an emphasis on the roots effects. The dependency of sliding mode and shape considering the soil and roots-type has been evaluated by using the numerical finite element model. It is observed that the inclination and height of the slope and the coverage type are the most important effective factors in FOS. While the soil strength parameters and its physical properties would be considered as the second major group that affects the FOS. Achieved results from the developed relationship have shown the acceptable estimation for the roots slope. The extracted R square from the proposed relationship considering nonlinear estimation has been achieved up to 0.85. As a further cross check, the achieved R square from a multi-layer neural network has also been observed to be around 0.92. The numerical verification considering different scenarios has been done in the current evaluation.

  • This experiment was performed to study growth and yield of rice (cv. Dongjinbyeo) and soil properties affected by the application of rice straw, compost, and hairy vetch. An application of rice straw and compost led to the decrease in plant heights and tillers compared with chemical fertilizer whereas hairy vetch application resulted in slight increase. Panicle no per plant was the highest in chemical fertilizer and there was no difference among organic matters. Grain per panicle was no difference among chemical fertilizer, rice straw, and compost whereas was the lowest in hairy vetch application. The 1,000 grain weights did not show any statistic difference and the ripened rate was enhanced in all treatments of organic sources compared with chemical fertilizer. Therefore, an index of rice yield of compost, rice straw, and hairy vetch to chemical fertilizer (100%) was 77, 72, and 103%, respectively. In addition, an application of organic sources led to the increase of soil pore space and this contributed to the improvement of soil physical property.

  • The recycled soil that is proceeded from demolition concrete structures was analyzed by the methods of the physical and mechanical tests of soil and TCLP test to use the soil in low landfilling for the construction of an industrial complex. The laboratory test for diffusion of alkali ion in soil mass was analyzed by the methods of XRF and ICP. The fish toxicity test was also conducted to find an environmental influence. The recycled soil through the laboratory test satisfied the engineering property for low landfilling and the criteria of soil contamination. However, the solution which producted by 1:1 ratio of recycled soil and water contained the high pH concentration by alkali ion. The calcium hydroxide solution by CSH cement paste was estimated as the main reason why pH concentration is increased more than 9.0. The high pH concentration in recycled soils causes a toxicity to the livability of fishes. A diffusion area of pH concentration in the ground was analyzed by the Visual Modflow Ver. 2009 program based on geotechnical investigation. The high pH concentration in the recycled soils can be remained as high value due to cement paste in the long term period. Therefore, in the early stage of landfilling work, the mixing with the weathered granite soil is necessary to control the pH concentration.

  • Colluvial sell has a very unique deformation property, particularly when it is subject to the cutting work entailed in a variety of construction. In this study, the cut slope tying on a colluvial layer in which the transmission tower had been installed were investigated to find out the cause of deformation. In-situ tests such as boring, surface-wave analysis (MASW) were employed to look into the physical composition of underground layers and FEM including LEM were carried out to simulate the construction steps. The result shows that the stress relaxation followed by road construction induced the deformation of the slope and damage in the foundation of the transmission tower.
