Influencing of drying-wetting cycles on mechanical behaviors of silty clay with different initial moisture content

  • To get a better understanding of the effect of drying-wetting cycles (DWC) on the mechanical behaviors of silty clay hiving different initial moisture content (IMC), the direct shear tests were performed on sliding band soil taken from a reservoirinduced landslide at the Three Gorges Reservoir area. The results indicated that, as the increasing number of DWC, the shear stress-displacement curves type changed from strain-hardening to strain-softening, and both the soil peak strengths and strength parameters reduced first and then nearly remain unchanged after a certain number of DWC. The effects of DWC on the cohesion were predominated that on the internal friction angle. The IMC of 17% is regarding as the critical moisture content, and the evolution laws of both peak shear strength and strength parameters presented a reversed 'U' type with the rising of the IMC. Based on it, a strength deterioration evolution model incorporating the influence of IMC and DWC was developed to describe the total degradation degree and degradation rate of strength parameters, and the degradation of strength parameters caused by DWC could be counterbalanced to some extent as the soil IMC close to critical moisture content. The microscopic mechanism for the soil strength caused by the IMC and DWC were discussed separately. The research results are of great significance for further understanding the water-weakening mechanicals of the silty clay subjected to the water absorption/desorption.

  • Landfarming that supplies aerobic biodegradation condition to indigenous microbes in soils is a biological remediation technology. In this research, volatilization and biodegradation rate by indigenous microbes in the soil contaminated with total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH) were measured. Soils were contaminated with diesel artificially and divided into two parts. One was sterilized by autoclave to remove indigenous microorganism and the other was used as it was. Various moisture contents and number of tillings were applied to the soil to find out proper condition to minimize volatilization and enhance bioremediation. Volatilization of TPH was inhibited and biodegradation was enhanced by increase on moisture content. Tilling was usually used to supply air for microbes, but tillings did not affect the growth of microbes in our study. Enough moisture content and proper aeration are important to control volatilization in landfarming. Also, TPH degradation was a function of the microbe counts (x1), numbers of tilling (x2), and moisture content (x3) from the application of the response surface methodology. Statistical results showed the order of significance of the independent variables to be microbe counts > numbers of tilling > moisture content.

흙의 다짐에 있어서 최대건조밀도(最大乾燥密度)와 최적함수비(最適含水比)의 추정(推定)에 대(對)하여 (A Study on the Prediction of Maximum Dry Density and Optimum Moisture Content in Soil Compaction)

  • 최대습윤밀도(最大濕潤密度)로서 함수비시험(含水比試驗)을 하지 않고 직접최적합수비(直接最適合水比)와 최대건록밀도(最大乾綠密度)를 추정(推定)하는 관계식(關係式)을 구(求)하기 위(爲)하여 전국(全國)에서 최근(最近)에 공사(工事)를 실시(實施)하였거나 또는 공사중(工事中)에 있는 157개(個) 지구(地區)의 다짐시험(試驗) 결과(結果)를 분석(分析)하여 다음과 같은 결론(結論)을 얻었다. 최대건조밀도(最大乾燥密度)와 최적합수비(最適合水比)의 사이에는 ${\gamma}=0.9636$의 높은 상관성(相關性)을 나타냈고 ${\gamma}_{dmax.}={\frac{1}{0.4193+0.00937W_{opt.}}$의 관계식(關係式)을 얻었다. 최적합수비(最適合水比)에 대응(對應)하는 습윤밀도(濕潤密度)와 최적합수비(最適合水比)는 $W_{opt.}={\frac{1-0.4193{\gamma}_{tmax.}}{0.937_{\gamma}_{tmax.}-0.01}$의 관계식(關係式)을 얻었고 최대습윤밀도(最大濕潤密度)(${\gamma}_{tmax}$)로 추정(推定)한 최적합수비(最適合水比)는 실측치(實測値)와 큰 차이(差異)가 없었다. 최대습윤밀도(最大濕潤密度)로 추정(推定)한 함수비(含水比)에 의하여 최대건조밀도(最大乾燥密度)를 추정(推定)한 결과실측치(結果實測値)와의 오차(誤差)는 ${\pm}5%$내(內)에 속했다. 최대건조밀도(最大乾燥密度)와 공극비(空隙比)는 ${\gamma}=0.9706$의 높은 상관성(相關性)이 인정(認定)되고 ${\gamma}_{dmax.}={\frac{1}{0.3938+0.3426e}}$의 관계식(關係式)을 얻었다.

Characterizations of Yields and Seed Components of Sesame (Sesamum indicum L.) as Affected by Soil Moisture from Paddy Field Cultivation

  • Accurate and optimal water supply to cereal crop is critical in growing stalks and producing maximum yields. Recently, upland crops are cultivated in paddy field soils to reduce overproduced rice in Korea. In order to increase productivity of cereal crops in paddy fields which have poor percolation and drainage properties, it is necessary to fully understand crop response to excessive soil water condition and management of soil drainage system in paddy field. The objectives of this study were to investigate effects of excessive soil water to sesame growth and to quantify stress response using groundwater levels. Two cultivars of sesame were selected to investigate; Gunbak and Areum. These sesames were planted in paddy fields located in Miryang, Gyeongnam with different soil drainage levels and drainage systems. The experiment site was divided into two plots by drainage class; very poorly and somewhat poorly drained. Two different drainage systems were applied to alleviate excessive soil water in each plot: open ditch and pipe drainage system. Soil water contents and groundwater levels were measured every hour during growing season. Pipe drainage system was significantly effective to alleviate wet injury for sesame in paddy fields. Pipe drainage system decreased average soil moisture content and groundwater level during sesame cultivation. This resulted in greater yield and lignan contetns in sesame seeds than ones from open ditch system. Comparison between two cultivars, Gunbak had greater decrease in growth and yield by excessive soil water and high groundwater level than Areum. Seed components (lignan) showed decrease in seeds as soil water increased. When soil moisture content was greater than 40%, lignan content tended to decrease than ones from less soil moisture content. Based on these results, pipe drainage system would be more effective to reduce wet injury to sesame and increase lignan component in paddy field cultivation.

토양수분함량이 수수속작물과 옥수수의 생육 및 건물합성에 미치는 영향 II. 건물축적 및 성분함량의 변화 (Effects of soil Moisture Levels on Growth and Dry Matter Accumulation of Sorghum and Corn II. Changes of dry matter accumulation and chemical composition)

  • 생육기간중(生育期間中) 토양수분함량(土壤水分含量)의 차이(差異)가 수수속작물(屬作物)의 건물생산(乾物生産)과 성분함량(成分含量)에 미치는 영향을 알기 위하여 공시작물(供試作物) 및 품종(品種)으로 수수의 Pioneer 931, 수수${\times}$수단그라스교잡종(交雜種)의 Pioneer 988, 수단그라스의 Piper 및 옥수수의 수원(水原)19호(號)를 공시(供試)하였으며, 토양수분함량(土壤水分含量)은 포장용수량(圃場容水量)의 100, 80, 60 및 40%로 유지(維持)하며 시험(試驗)을 실시(實施)하였는바 그 결과(結果)를 요약(要約)하면 다음과 같다. 1. 주당건물수량(株當乾物收量)은 토양수분(土壤水分) 60%에서 각각(各各) Pioneer 931, 176.2g, Pioneer 988, 180.8g 및 옥수수 164.0g으로 가장 높았다. 2 토양수분함량(土壤水分含量).에 따른 생육시기별(生育時期別) 건물축적량(乾物畜積量)은 수단그라스를 제외(除外)하고는 각작물(各作物)에서 공히 60>40>80>100%수분구(水分區)의 순(順)이었다. 3. 절대생장율(絶對生長率)(AGR)은 각품종(各品種) 모두 60% 수분구(水分區)에서 가장 높았으나 수단그라스는 80% 수분구(水分區)에서 높았다. 상대생장율(相對生長率)(RGR)은 각품종 모두 생육초기(生育初期)에 높고 생육후기(生育後期)에는 낮았으며, 순동화율(純同化率)(NAR)은 6월(月)29일(日)${\sim}$7월(月)5일(日) 기간중(期間中) 60% 토양수분구(土壤水分區)에서 $72{\sim}467g/m^2$/일(日)으로 가장 높았다. 4. 건엽중(乾葉中)의 조섬유함량(粗纖維含量)은 Pioneer 931의 경우 100% 및 80%수분구(水分區)($28.6{\sim}28.8%$)에서 높고 60 및 40%수분구(水分區)($23.6{\sim}24.1%$)에서 낮은 편이었다. 그러나 옥수수의 조섬유함량(粗纖維含量)에 따라 큰 차이(差異)가 없었다. 건엽(乾葉)의 조단백질함량(粗蛋白質含量)에 따라 큰 차이(差異)가 없었다. 건엽(乾葉)의 조단백질함량(粗蛋白質含量)은 60%수분구(水分區)($14.2{\sim}21.6%$) 및 40%수분구(水分區)($13.8{\sim}16.0%$)가 다른 고토양수분구(高土壤水分區)($7.3{\sim}13.9%$)보다 높은 편이었다. 5. 건경중(乾莖中)의 조섬유함량(粗纖維含量)은 $24.6{\sim}36.7%$로서 건엽중(乾葉中)의 함량(含量)보다 월등히 높았고 조단백질함량(粗蛋白質含量)은 $2.0{\sim}5.3%$로서 건엽중(乾葉中)의 함량(含量)보다 현저히 낮았다. 특(特)히 P.931의 건경중(乾莖中)의 조섬유함량(粗纖維含量)은 다른 작물(作物)에 비해 현저(顯著)히 높은 편이었다.

개간지 상전에 발생하는 발아불량 현상의 원인 및 방제에 관한 연구 (Studies on the Cause and Control for Non-sprouting Bud in the Utility Reclaimed Hill Side Mulberry Field.)

  • 본 연구는 산지개간상전에 발생하는 발아불량현상의 원인을 구명하고 방제법을 대립코자 1971∼1974년까지 4개년간에 걸처 실시하였으며 그 결과는 다음과 같았다. 1. 피해증상은 춘기에는 지조의 선단부가 발아를 하지 않거나 발아도중 즉 탈포∼연구기까지 진행되다가 갑자기 말라 죽는다. 발아불량지조의 피층 및 인피부에는 Necrosis 현상이 일어나고 갈색으로 변한다. 추기에는 엽의 노화, 선단엽의 이상, 엽맥, 엽병이 양변한다. 2. 발아불량상전토양은 화강암모재에 점질의 비율이 매우 낮은 사양토로 되어 있으며 하층토가 치밀 견고하고 공극률이 너무 적어서 근군발달에 매우 불량한 토양구조로 되어 있었다. 특히 발아불량극심지의 심토는 건전지에 비하여 고상이 과대하여 한발시에는 수분부족현상이 일어나기 쉬운 조건을 갖추고 있었다. 3. 발아불량극심상전은 건전상전에 비하여 토양수분함량이 유의하게 적었으며 특히 심토의 수분함량은 건전지가 적당한 수분함량을 유지하고 있었는데 반하여 발아불량극심지는 거의 위조점에 가까운 수분함량이었다. 4. 유방토심은 발아불량상전이 건전상전에 비하여 얕았고, 발아불량정도가 기한곳일수록 유방토심은 얕아지는 경향을 나타냈다. 5. 토양수분함량의 경시적변화는 토양내 유방붕소함량에 영향을 미쳤으며 발아불량상전의 수분함량은 건전상전에 비하여 6월 5일부터 9월 5일까지 계속 적은 함량을 유지하고 있었고, 유방붕소함량도 수분함량의 증감과 같은 경향으로 변화되였다. 6. 토양의 pH(4.7-5.6)와 유방붕소함량간에는 상관관계가 없었으나 유기물함량과 유방붕소함량간에는 고도의 정상관관계가 있었다. 7. 토양중 유방붕소함량은 발아불량상전이 0.19∼0.28ppm, 건전상전이 0.34∼0.43ppm으로서 발아불량상전보다 유의하게 많았다. 8. 엽 및 피층내의 붕소함량은 발아불량수가 건전수보다 유의하게 적었다. 9. 사경시험의 붕소결제구에서는 발아불량현상이 유발되었으며 그 피해증상은 포장에서 발생되는 증상과 동일하였다. 10. 석회의 시용은 시용량이 증가할 수록 발아불량현상을 다소 높게하는 경향이 있었다. 이상의 결과를 종합하여 볼때 뽕나무의 발아불량현상은 붕소의 결핍에 기인되나 붕소의 결핍피해정도는 토양모재, 토양내 유기물함량 및 수분함량 그리고 석회시용등에 의해서도 좌우되는 것으로 인정된다. 11. 발아불량현상은 붕사를 10a 당 6∼9kg을 춘, 하2회분시하면 방제할 수 있으며, 10a당2,000kg의 퇴비를 수년간 계속시용하는 방법도 상당한 방제방과를 얻을 수 있다고 믿어진다.

남산 삼림 토양에서의 효소 활성도와 중금속 함량에 관한 연구 (Studies on the Enzyme Activities and Heavy metals of Forest Soil in Mt. Nam. Seoul)

  • This study was carried out to investigate to determine seasonal variation of dehydrogenase activity, phosphatase activity, adenosine tri-phosphate content and some physicochemical properties, such as soil pH, moisture content, organic matter and several heavy metal concentrations from Apr. 1997 to jan. 1998 in Pinus densiflora and Quercus mongolica forest in Mt. Nam, to explain a relationship between enzyme activity and the soil factors. There were ranges of 4.03-4.65 in soil pH, 18.65-51.09% in moisture content and 6.69-95.95% in orgainc matter. The organic matter content decreased with soil horizon, showing the higher values in Q. mongolica forest. In comparison to the results of Kawngneung site as control area, there were slightly differences due to a development level of forest ecosystem and microbial degradation of organic matter. The heavy metal concentrations showed 32.50-75.55 ${\mu}g/g$ in Cu, 69.33-134.84 ${\mu}g/g$ in Zn, 57.02-150.32 ${\mu}g/g$ in Pb, and 0.36-1.00 ${\mu}g/g$ in Mt. Nam. These values are higher than in Kwangneung site because of long-term exposure to air pollutants from central city. On the other hand, ATP contents in Mt. Nam were lower than in Kawngneung site in relation to soil organic matter, moisture content and relatively high heavy metal concentrations. ATP contents per soil weight was largest in F+H layer and in spring time of other seasons. Dehydrogenase activity as an index of soil microbial activity had a ranges of 170.67-1,221.66 ${\mu}g$ TPF/g that showed lower values than in Kawngneung site. However, phophatase activity had a contray tendency due to P fertilization for a continuous management. Those values increased through spring to a maximum in the summer and fall in autumn. This is basically caused by metabolic state of soil on the biological activity and several and several factors, such as aeration, soil temperature, vegetation and microflora.

제주도"송이"의 시멘트안정처리 효과에 관하여 (Effects of Soil-cement Stabilization about the Song-I in Cheju Province)

  • This experiment was carried out to find out the effectiveness of soil cement stabilization about the Song-I in Cheju province. The results are summarized as follows; 1.The increasing ratio of unconfined compressive strength according to the increment of cement content was markedly low compared with the weathered granite soil, so the effect of stabilization was low. 2.The moisture content of the sample of Song-I indicates the maximum unconfined compressive strength showed at the 5% or so of dry side than the optimum moisture content and the change of the unconfined compressive strength according to the change of moisture content was not sensitive compared with the weathered granite soil. 3.Generally the primary strength of curing age within 7 days of the sulfate resisting cement was low compared with the normal portland cement and the strength of 28 curing days showed a similar tendency, especially in case of Song-I, and it seemed that the sulfate resisting cement was a little more effective than the normal portland cement. 4.As the unconfined compressive strength of grain size controlled Song-I was low compared with the weathered granite soil, so the rate of weight loss by the durability test was great, therefore it was thought that the durability was weak.

증발량 추정을 위한 지표면 가용 수분 계수 (On the Surface Moisture Availability Parameters to Estimate the Surface Evaporation)

  • In order to discuss the differences among the SMP(Surface Moisture Availability Parameter), by previous researchers on the basis of their own theoretical and empirical background, we assessed the SMP according to the soil types and volumetric soil water contents. The results are as follows. There are differences among all the five SMAPs. There's a tendency that the larger grain size, the higher value of parameters. And they divided into two groups for their value: one group has parameters with exponential function and the other with cosine and linear function. The maximum difference between the two groups appears when the volumetric soil water contents are 0.07m3m-3 for sand, 0.l1m3m-3 for loam, 0.12 for clay, and 0.13m3m-3 for silt loam. So, these differences must be considered when we estimate the surface evaporation rate. From field data, the paddy field soil around Junam reservoir is classified as a silt has high wetness, 0.56. So, the parameter obtained from the field measurement is much higher than that of Clapp and Hornberger(1978)'s Table. This study treated the SMP for a certain point of time in winter season. But if we measured the soil water contents continuously, we could obtain better time-dependent parameter. 실내조경에 있어서 양치식물의 수분환경 관리방안에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Management Plan of Water Environment of Ferns in the Interior Landscape)

  • Indoor environments are usually less than optimal for the growth of ferns, especially in regards to the water condition. These studies were performed to investigate responses involved in causing growth of ferns and presume management plan against the water deficit under indoor conditions. The effect of air humidity and soil moisture on the ferns was examined in Adiantume raddianum and Selaginella kraussiana. Results of experiments are as follows; 1. Under a low humidity condition, having a 25-50% RH. ornamental value of ferns decreased much more than under a 90% RH. Under a low soil moisture, such as sand treatment, ornamental value of ferns also decreased. 2. Leaf chlorophyll content, water content and stomata situations increased as air humidity and soil moisture went up. 3. Even if air humidity and soil water were not enough for ferns growth, the extending of irrigation cycle was helpful. 4. Under extremely low air humidity conditions, some water management, namely, using water holding soil or extending of irrigation cycle was desirable. Other methods of increasing air humidity, including water instruments such as ornamental pools, waterfalls, or fountains, grouping plants together were also helpful. But spraying water on leaves increased injury to ferns growth because of excess evaporation from the leaves. Though these studies, we learn that ferns are susceptible to water condition such as air humidity, soil water and water management. If other environmental factos are maintained with optimal conditions, water condition plays an important role in ferns growth in indoor environments.
