Development of new approaches to achieve naturally good ecological potential of forest road cut-slope by making the best use of advantages of gabion systems with vegetation base materials to prevent slope failure and erosion, in the area with highly erodible soil. As a result on the type analysis of gabion systems already installed in road cut-slopes, gabion systems were generally established to prevent slope failure. Existing gabion systems can be divided into monolithic and modular system and can be divided into ten subtypes according to the purpose of establishment and combination of other measures. As a result on the monitoring of erosion amount from forest road cut-slopes in the test applications, the order of erosion amount from largest to smallest is as follows : the curved road cut-slope site where normal gabion system was established ($7,911cm^3$); the control site ($7,632cm^3$); the straight road cut-slope site where normal gabion system was established ($7,301cm^3$); the curved road cut-slope site where the new gabion system was established ($5,684cm^3$); and the straight road cut-slope site where the new gabion system ($5,325cm^3$). Therefore, the result shows that the new gabion system is more effective than the normal gabion system to reduce erosion amount from forest ! road cut-slopes. During the study period, vegetation coverages of the straight and curved road cut-slope site where the new gabion system was established were about 45% and about 36%, so average vegetation coverage of the sites where the new gabion systems was established was higher than the sites where the normal gabion systems was established. Therefore, it was concluded that the new gabion system can be more effective for cut-slope revegetation.
The heavy downpour caused by unusual weather has destroyed a railroad bed. It caused a large amount of soil loss due to soil erosion. Hence, there is necessary to rehabilitate the destructed railroad bed as quickly as possible. Application of geotextile bag can standardize the rehabilitation process. Geotextile bag method can be more stable, faster, and more economical. In this study, the stress to geotextile bag was estimated to select the appropriate geotextile material. Geotechnical characteristics of geotextile were also determined.
In this study, a two-dimensional model for identifying areas of erosion and deposition over a basin was developed based on the mass balance principle in a distributed model. The program consists of three steps: (a) estimation of soil erosion; (b) determination of flow amount and direction; and (c) estimation of mass balance. Soil erosion was estimated with USLE. A single-direction (SF) and a multi-direction flow algorithm (MF) were applied to estimate slope length (L). The Maximum Downhill Slope Method (MDS) and the Neighborhood Method (NBH) were used to estimate the slope degree (S). Sediment transport resulting from eroded soil was estimated using Ferro's (1998) and Swift's (2000) sediment delivery ratio (DR). The model was validated by comparing the predicted sediment yields for three basins with measured data. The developed algorithm showed that Ferro's DR method combined with the MDS and MF produced the best agreement with the dredging records of three agricultural reservoir basins in Korea.

The objective of this study is to estimate quantitatively soil salinity and soil loss at upland soils in agriculture land region in Saemangeum reclaimed land on the south Korea coasts. Soil loss and soil salinity are the most critical problem at reclaimed tidal saline soil in Korea. The several thematic maps of research area such as land cover map, topographic and soil maps, together with tabular precipitation data used for soil erosion and soil salinity calculation. Meteorological data were measured directly as air temperature, wind speed, solar radiation, and precipitation. The experiment was conducted 2% sloped lysimeter ($5.0m{\times}20.0m$) with 14 treatments and it were separated by low salinity division (LSD) and high salinity division (HSD) install. The cation content in ground water increased during time course, but in the case of land surface water the content was variable, and $K^+$ was lower than that of $Na^+$ and $Mg^{2+}$. At the LSD under rainproof condition, the salinity was directly proportional to soil water content, but at the HSD the tendency was no reversed. In condition of rainproof, the amount of soil salinity was higher at the HSD than at the LSD. Positive correlation was obtained between the soil water content and available phosphorous content at the rainfall division, but there was no significance at the surface soil of the rainproof division. Sodium adsorption ratio and anion contents in soil were repressed in the order of vinyl-mulching > non-mulching > bare field. According to the result of analyzing soil loss, soil loss occurred in a vinyl-mulching, a non-mulching and a bare field in size order, and also approximately 11.2 ton/ha soil loss happened on the reclaimed land area. The average soil loss amount by the unit area takes place in a non-mulching and bare field a lot. Our results indicate that soluble salt control and soil erosion are critical at reclaimed tidal saline soil and the results can provide some useful information for deciding management plans to reduce soil loss and salt damage for stable crop production and diverse utilization or cultivation could be one of the management options to alleviate salt damage at reclaimed tidal saline soil in Korea.

In order to examine the amount and rate of soil erosion on Ridge Traversing Trail in Jirisan National Park, a cross-sectional area of hiking trail were monitored at 16 sites in Nogodan - Samdobong section from November 2011 to April 2012. Although all sites demonstrates an enlarged cross-section of trail, the amount of soil erosion varies from site to site: 54.9 to $908.8cm^2$. It suggests that the erosional rate ranges from $0.1cm^2/day$ to $1.72cm^2/day$. The erosional amount is also varied with a trail type: $109.3cm^2$ for a shallow gully-like trail to $573.2cm^2$ for a unilateral trail. However, the cross-sectional change is larger on a sidewall than a tread irrespective of a trail type. The erosional amounts of November to April are smaller than that of May to October. In particular, the erosional amount of November 2011 to April 2012 is smaller than the depositional amount, implying a reduced cross-section of trail. Pipkrake action puts loose soil particles on a sidewall on March and April, and then rainwash due to a heavy rainfall takes them away after May. It seems to be the most predominant erosional process in Ridge Traversing Trail. A sidewall facing north shows a larger amount of erosion than a sidewall facing south. It also implies a difference in the development of a pipkrake according to an aspect. The small amount of erosion and cross-sectional decrease, which is usually observed on April, results from the combined effect of frost heaving, pipkrake action, a small rainfall and a temporary suspension of trampling. It is necessary to establish the monitoring system of trail erosion in terms of the management of hiking trail in a mountain national park.

This study is to analyze location conditions for erosion control dams to be constructed in Chungcheongnam-do, Daejeon Metropolitan City, Chungcheongbuk-do and Gyeongsangbuk-do in order to establish proper conditions for erosion control dams in the future. 199 sites where erosion control dams are expected to be built in 2010 were chosen and investigated in terms of 12 factors including basin area, basin slope, and landslide risk. The results showed that erosion control dams for Chungcheongnam-do and Daejeon Metropolitan City are mostly impermeable gravity dams mainly composed of concrete. In contrast, Chungcheongbuk-do and Gyeongsangbuk-do are increasing the number of permeable or compound erosion control dams. Basin analysis at planned erosion control dam sites showed that at least 44.5% of the total area has high landslide risk. Gyeongsangbuk-do had the largest basin area for erosion control dam sites at 157.3ha, followed by Chungcheongbuk-do at 64.4ha and Chungcheongnam-do at 54.8ha. Analysis of sand deposits in the Chungcheongnam-do erosion control dam built in 2010 confirmed an average deposit of 971.8m3. The sand deposit capacity and amount of sediment control for erosion control dams have a very low correlation with basin area or flow path slope, and this needs to be addressed in future sand deposit capacity designs.
The slope failure in the country is caused by mainly rainfall and its type is reported shallow slope failures in general. To investigate the cause of slope failure, the unsaturated soil slope behavior in accordance with rainfall amount studies actively, but there are little studies related the slope erosion and scour by rainfall. The slope erosion and scour by rainfall cause environmental pollution and slope instability, however there are few methods to effectively control them. This research analyzed experimentally how infinite gradients are infiltrated according to the changes of amount of rainfall and the slope of gradients by manufacturing the model of gradient in order to investigate how rainfall infiltrates regarding homogeneous gradients and slope protection method. For this, this experiment measured and analyzed discharge, storage rate occurring in gradients by going on changing amount of rainfall, slope of gradients.
This study was performed to estimate the soil loss on a national scale and grade regions with the potential risk of soil erosion. Universal soil loss equation (USLE) for rainfall and runoff erosivity factors (R), cover management factors (C) and support practice factors (P) and revised USLE for soil erodibility factors (K) and topographic factors (LS) were used. To estimate the soil loss, the whole nation was divided into 21,337 groups according to city county, soil phase and land use type. The R factors were high in the southern coast of Gyeongnam and Jeonnam and part of the western coast of Gyeonggi and low in the inland and eastern coast of Gyeongbuk. The K factors were higher in the regions located on the lower streams of rivers and the plain lands of the western coast of Chungnam and Jeonbuk. The average slope of upland areas in Pyeongchang-gun was the steepest of 30.1%. The foot-slope areas from the Taebaek Mountains to the Sobaek Mountains had steep uplands. Total soil loss of Korea was estimated as $50{\times}10^6Mg$ in 2004. The potential risk of soil erosion in upland was the severest in Gyeongnam and the amount of soil erosion was the greatest in Jeonnam. The regions in which annual soil loss was estimated over $50Mg\;ha^{-1}$ were graded as "the very severe" and their acreage was $168{\times}10^3ha$ in 2004. The soil erosion maps of city/county of Korea were made based on digital soil maps with 1:25,000 scale.
The purpose of this study is to estimate quantitatively soil loss and sediment yield in alpine farmland. For this purpose, Naerinchon watershed in Gangwon province was selected as our study area and total annual soil loss and sediment yield was estimated respectively by the Revised Universal Soil Loss Equation (RUSLE) model and the Sediment Delivery Distributed (SEDD) model. The results of this study clearly show that dry field areas have significant impact on the total soil erosion and sediment yield compared with other land use. Dry field areas represent only $2.6\%$ of the total area of the watershed but soil loss and sediment yield account for $10.9\%$ and $33.12\%$ of the total amount respectively Especially as with alpine farmland, this result is more clearly shown. These areas account for $1.8\%$ of the entire watershed but contribute to $7.7\%$ and $15\%$ of the total soil loss and sediment yield respectively. From the above results, we can know that alpine farmland is important source of soil loss and sediment yield and it is need to prevent and control. soil erosion from alpine filmland urgently.
For this study the 4 sub-watersheds Okdong A, Hankang B, Jecheon A and Hankang C which are the main streams of the Han River within the mid-level region of Chungju Dam are selected and the analysis of soils has been carried out through the soil basic survey. When it comes to the soil erosion amount the soil nutrient load has been calculated by utilizing the RUSLE erosion equation. In case of the data related to the measurement of water flow and quality the information available from the "Water Information System" one of the websites run by the Ministry of Environment has been used to calculate the water pollution load. The correlation between the soil nutrient load and the water pollutant load has been analyzed through making comparison. According to the results related to the soil nutrient load of each sub-watershed the Hankang C shows the highest values TOC 29,986.92 ton/yr, TN 3,860.33 ton/yr and TP 973.97 ton/yr respectively. Even when it comes to the loads related to water quality the Hankang C shows also comparatively high values TOC 6,625.64 ton/yr, TN 7,335.01 ton/yrand TP 145.49 ton/yr respectively. The soil nutrient loads of the sub-watersheds are shown to increase towards the lower stream meaning the load increases in the order of Hankang CHankang B and Okdong A. When it comes to the water pollutant load the value goes up along down the water system meaning the load gets higher in the order of Hankang C, Hankang B and Okdong A while utilizing the mainstream within the mid-level region of Chungju Dam as the basis. The correlation study showed that the nutrient content of soil is proportional to the pollutant load in water with the strongest positive correlation with TOC.
