BACKGROUND: The utilization of green manures as alternatives to reduce the use of chemical fertilizers is considered a good agricultural practice. Effect of incorporation of green manure to soil on change of inorganic nitrogen (N) is well literatured. However, there have been few studies on examining entire dynamic of N including inorganic N and N gases in soil incorporated with green manure. The objective of this study was to examine the changes of inorganic N and N gases with single and mixture applications of hairy vetch and barley in the soil. METHODS AND RESULTS: Hairy vetch(H) and barley (B) were applied at the mixture ratio of B:H=0:0, B:H=100:0, B:H=0:100, and B:H=50:50 in soil. The soil-green manure mixtures were incubated in the dark at $25^{\circ}C$ for 17 weeks under aerobic conditions. Cumulative emission of $NH_3$ and $N_2O$ from soils amended with mixture of barley and hairy vetch(B:H=50:50) were less than those from amended with mono hairy vetch(B:H=0:100). Incorporation of single hairy vetch or mixture of barley and hair vetch application could significantly increased concentration of plant available N ($NH_4{^+}$) in early stage of plant growth and plant available N ($NO_3{^-}$) in later stage. However, high concentration of $NO_3{^-}$ in soil could cause adverse environmental impact through $NO_3{^-}$ leaching from soil. CONCLUSION: Conclusively, it might be a good soil management practice to incorporate mixture of barely and hairy vetch in the view point of increase in plant available N concentration and decrease in N losses through volatilization, denitrification, and leaching.
Soil N mineralization and nitrification can be measured conveniently using mixed bed (cation and anion) exchange resin bags. However, appropriate use of these resin bags requires pretreatment to avoid colorimetric interference and standardize N ion adsorption. Three pretreatments were evaluated : control (untreated), 2 M NaCl with a distilled water rinse, and 4 M NaCl. The 4 M NaCl treatment was effective at removing background levels of $NH_4{^+}$ and $NO_3{^-}$, but adsorbed low amounts (about 40%) of inorganic N from standard solutions. Untreated resin bags adsorbed a constant, higher amount of $NO_3{^-}$ (60%), but did not remove background levels of $NH_4{^+}$. The 2 M NaCl treatment followed by a distilled water rinse performed best : it removed background $NH_4{^+}$ and adsorbed a constant amount of both $NH_4{^+}$ (70%) and $NO_3{^-}$ (60%). Because the ion exchange resin is fairly expensive, we also tested if the resin bags could be reused. Resin bags were either loaded with $NH_4{^+}$ and $NO_3{^-}$ in the laboratory or incubated in soil in the field, desorbed with the 2 M NaCl treatment, and then loaded with standard $NH_4{^+}$ and $NO_3{^-}$ solutions. Lab loaded resin bags adsorbed about 60% of inorganic N then loaded with 2.5 or $5.0mgN\;1^{-1}$ and 70% when loaded at 10 or $20mgN\;1^{-1}$, whereas reused field incubated bags showed the opposite adsorption efficiency. These results demonstrate that resin bags can give reproducible results, but care must be taken to evaluate the effect of pretreatment and potential for reuse.
This study was conducted to identify the parameter better representing the nitrogen supply capacity of soils for the vegetable crops growing in vinylhouse. All the parameters showed significant positive correlation with the yield of chinese cabbage. The correlation coefficients were in the order of $NO{_3}^--N+NH{_4}^+-N(2M\;KCl)$ > $NO{_3}^--N(2M\;KCl)$ > OM > T-N > 0.01M $NaHCO_3$ > 0.01M $CaCl_2$ > $NH{_4}^+-N(2M\;KCl)$ > 6N HCl. Between the soil N and N absorbed by plant, the correlation coefficients were in the order of $NO{_3}^--N+NH{_4}^+-N(2M\;KCl)$ > $NO{_3}^--N(2M\;KCl)$ > 0.01M $NaHCO_3$ > $NH{_4}^+-N(2M\;KCl)$ > 0.01M $CaCl_2$ > OM > T-N > 6N HCl. The results of this study suggest that 2M KCl extractable inorganic N. 2M KCl extractable $NO{_3}^--N$ are recommendable parameters for the estimation of N supply capacity of the vinylhouse soils. The sum of soil $NO{_3}^--N$ and fertilizer nitrogen showed highly significant positive correlation with the yields of chinese cabbage and nitrogen absorbed by the plant, while negative correlation with the nitrogen use efficiency.
A laboratory experiment was performed to investigate nitrogen removal by the soil column. The addition of 20% waste oyster shell to the soil accelerated nitrification in soil column. The $NO_3^--N$ concentration in the effluent decreased with the decrease of HRT(Hydraulic Retention Time). When methanol and glucose added as carbon sources, the average removal rates of T-N(Total Nitrogen) were 82% and 77.9%, respectively. The $NO_3^--N$ removal by methanol supplementation in soil column can likely be attributed to denitrification. In continuous removal of nitrogen using the soil column, the COD(Chemical Oxygen Demand) and $NH_4^+-N$ removed simultaneously in organic matter decomposing column. The greater part of $NH_4^+-N$ was nitrified by the percolated through nitrification column, and the little $NH_4^+-N$ was found in the effluent. The T-N of 87.4% removed at HRT of 36 hrs in denitrfication column. Because of nitrified effluents from nitrification column are low in carbonaceous matter, an external source of carbon is required.
Nitrogen and phosphorus loads from an agricultural watershed of the Yulmun-chon tributary in the Buk-Han River Basin were quantified based on total amounts of water stream flow. The water quality and soil loss were estimated. Levels of the stream were recorded automatically using the water level meter. The flow velocities, along with the cross-sectional areas of the riverbed, were measured to estimate total amounts of water flow at three monitoring sites in this tributary. Water samples were collected at nine sites with two weeks interval from May to August and analyzed for the water quality parameters. Amounts of soil loss were estimated by the USLE. The size of the Yulmunchon watershed was 3,210 ha, of which paddy and upland soil areas were composed about 41%. The total amounts of soil loss from the watershed areas were estimated to be $13,273Mg\;year^{-1}$, showing 53%, 46% and 0.7% of the soil loss ratio from upland, forest, and paddy areas, respectively. Electrical conductivities and Nitrogen concentrations of the stream water were higher in the lower watershed area than in the upper area. Increments of N were higher for $NO_3-N$ than $NH_4-N$. Nitrate nitrogen was the major N form to pollute the water due to the agricultural activity. Total runoff was about 72% of the total precipitation in the watershed. The maximum loads of T-N and T-P due to the runoff were estimated to be 1,500 and $5kg\;day^{-1}$, respectively. Concentrations of $NO_3-N$ and $NH_4-N$ in the runoff were 13.5 and 1.8 times higher than those in precipitation. The N loads were mainly from soil loss, application of fertilizer, and livestock wastes, which were 52% of total N load. Results demonstrated that reduction of fertilizer use and the soil loss would be essential for water quality protection of the agricultural watershed.
In order to get some basic data to check the environmental sound function against soil and water pollution and the safe vegetable production by korean organic farming where an internationally recognized basic concepts of soil fertility management for organic farming is not practiced and only applying the organic fertilizer to maintain the soil fertility, the chemical characteristics of soils and $NO_{3}^{-}$ content of chinese cabbage and lettuce cultivated by the conventional farming, greenhouse cultivation and organic farming were investigated. The highest value of $NO_{3}^{-}$-N in 0~30cm subsoil among the three different farming systems was found in the subsoil of organic farming and it was 3.6 and 6.6 times higher than those of conventional farming in chinese cabbage and lettuce respectively. $P_2O_5$ accumulation in the rhizosphere by organic farming also showed the highest value. The accumulation of $NO_{3}^{-}$-N and $P_2O_5$ in organic farming soil were similar or even more higher to those of greenhouse cultivation. The $NO_{3}^{-}$ accumulation in the vegetable by organic farming reached 3224ppm for chinese cabbage and 2543ppm for lettuce, and it were 4.7 and 6.4 times higher than those by conventional farming. It was concluded that there is urgently necessary to introduce the main concepts of soil fertility management of the Basic Standard of IFOAM, EU regulation and FAO/WHO Codex Alimentarius on organic agriculture(draft) into korean organic agriculture for the operation of environmental sound system and the production of sate vegetable in terms of $NO_{3}^{-}$ content.
Tobacco plant(8-leaf seedlings) were grown on water culture fertilized with different N sources ($NO_3-N$, $NH_4-N$, $NO_3+NH_4-N$) during 15 days. Daily uptake of nutrients and inorganic constituents in plants were investigated in relation to growth responses of them. 1. Nitrate-fed plant showed higher daily uptake of inorganic cations than those in other treatments, and reached about two times higher uptake of nitrogen and three times more uptake of cations (K, Ca, Mg). Potassium was preferentially uptaken at a very fast rate from the beginning after treatment. Also $NO_3-N$ tended to be taken up selectively by the plant from the mixture of nitrate and $NH_4-N$. 2. The initial pH (pH 6.0) of culture medium drastically changed into acid (pH 4.0) in the $NH_4-N$ medium, but into slightly higher (pH 6.4) in the nitrate when measured after exposure of 24 hours. The mixture also tended to show an acidity but much weaker than $NH_4-N$ solution. 3. Nitrate-fed plant had a normal growth pattern but $NH_4-N$ fed plant almost stopped growing. Those plants containing both nitrate and ammonium N were also showed very poor growth.
This study was carried out to evaluate the effects of condensed molasses soluble (CMS) treatment on the mineralization of N, chemical properties and soil microbial population under the incubation condition with unsaturated water content during the 7 weeks at $25^{\circ}C$ in the different levels of CMS application. The results indicated that the total nitrogen content of soil was increased with increasing application rate of CMS and this trend was maintained up to 7 weeks. With CMS treatment content of $NH_4-N$ was gradually decreased. However, the content of $NO_3-N$ in the soil was gradually increased with incubation time due to the nitrification under the unsturated water condition. The CMS treatment increased the microbial populations such as bacteria, actinomycetes and fungi, which may be due to the availability of more nutrients such as amino acids, sugars and other minor elements from CMS. The pH of soil was found to be reduced by the addition of CMS, Whereas, electrical conduvtivity of soil was correspondingly increased with increasing application rate of CMS.

Objective: The present study aimed to assess the nitrogen (N) use efficiency of acidified pig slurry for regrowth yield and its environmental impacts on perennial ryegrass swards. Methods: The pH of digested pig slurry was adjusted to 5.0 or 7.0 by the addition of sulfuric acid and untreated as a control. The pig slurry urea of each treatment was labeled with $^{15}N$ urea and applied at a rate of 200 kg N/ha immediately after cutting. Soil and herbage samples were collected at 7, 14, and 56 d of regrowth. The flux of pig slurry-N to regrowth yield and soil N mineralization were analyzed, and N losses via $NH_3$, $N_2O$ emission and $NO_3{^-}$ leaching were also estimated. Results: The pH level of the applied slurry did not have a significant effect on herbage yield or N content of herbage at the end of regrowth, whereas the amount of N derived from pig slurry urea (NdfSU) was higher in both herbage and soils in pH-controlled plots. The $NH_4{^+}-N$ content and the amount of N derived from slurry urea into soil $NH_4{^+}$ fraction ($NdfSU-NH_4{^+}$) was significantly higher in in the pH 5 plot, whereas $NO_3{^-}$ and $NdfSU-NO_3{^-}$ were lower than in control plots over the entire regrowth period. Nitrification of $NH_4{^+}-N$ was delayed in soil amended with acidified slurry. Compared to non-pH-controlled pig slurry (i.e. control plots), application of acidified slurry reduced $NH_3$ emissions by 78.1%, $N_2O$ emissions by 78.9% and $NO_3{^-}$ leaching by 17.81% over the course of the experiment. Conclusion: Our results suggest that pig slurry acidification may represent an effective means of minimizing hazardous environmental impacts without depressing regrowth yield.

This batch experiment was conducted to investigate the patterns of major plant nutrients in the leachates from the soil that was incorporated with rice hull biochar adjusted pH with dry fish powder utilizing rice hull biochar for loading the soil microorganisms. The rice hull biochar adjusted pH between 6.0 and 7.0, and the mixture ratio of rice hull biochar and dry fish powder was 4:6. The treatments consisted of three; the soil incorporated with rice hull biochar non-adjusted pH with dry fish powder as control (RB + DF), the soil incorporated with rice hull biochar adjusted pH by pyroligneous acid solution and dry fish powder (RBP+DF), and the soil incorporated with rice hull biochar adjusted pH by citric acid solution and dry fish powder (RBC+DF). NH4-N, NO3-N, PO4-P, and K concentrations in the leachates were analyzed during incubation. The accumulated NH4-N and PO4-P concentrations in the leachates from the RBC+DF treatment were the highest during leaching periods. The highest accumulated NO3-N and K concentrations in the leachates from the RBP+DF treatment were observed. It observed that NH4-N and PO4-P were more released in the adjusted citric acid solution, but NO3-N and K were less released than those in the pyroligneous acid solution due to their low absorption capacity. Furthermore, it is necessary to investigate crop growth responses to the soil incorporated with adjusted pH rice hull biochar and dry fish powder for loading soil microorganisms.
