  • Recently, train control system is adopting computer system replacing mechanical system and its software is taking more responsibility than ever. Train control system software is a safety-critical embedded software with realtime and high reliability requirements. In this paper, we propose a safety assessment method for the train control system software. We review characteristics of train control system software and analyze related international software safety standards to derive requirements for safety assessment. Testing tools used for embedded software are surveyed to find a feasible safety assessment architecture. The proposed safety assessment method is to use safety activity results generated during development processes and feed them to the runtime embedded software testing tool.

  • Software evolution is an ongoing process carried out with the aim of extending base applications either for adding new functionalities or for adapting software to changing environments. This brings about the need for estimating and determining the overall impact of changes to a software system. In the last few decades many such change/impact analysis techniques have been developed to identify consequences of making changes to software systems. In this paper we propose a new approach of estimating change/impact analysis by classifying change based on type of change classification e.g. (a) nature and (b) extent of change propagation. The impact set produced consists of two dimensions of information: (a) statements affected by change propagation and (b) percentage i.e. statements affected in each category and involving the overall system. We also propose an algorithm for classifying the type of change. To establish confidence in effectiveness and efficiency we illustrate this technique with the help of an example. Results of our analysis are promising towards achieving the aim of the proposed endeavor to enhance change classification. The proposed dynamic technique for estimating impact sets and their percentage of impact will help software maintainers in performing selective regression testing by analyzing impact sets regarding the nature of change and change dependency.

  • Software testing is an activity to find defects included in software through creating test cases from the software system specification. In order to perform software testing effectively, it is required to prepare the full test plan, to create well-defined test cases, and to execute test monitoring activities systematically. Most existing researches for the test approaches focus on automating the activities from the test cases generation to the test execution. Contrary to those approaches, we study automatic approaches for test monitoring activities. For this, we identify the research issues that should be solved to automate test monitoring activities. Next, with those solutions, we suggest the construction method for an automatic framework for test monitoring.

  • This paper proposes a new non-homogeneous Poisson process software reliability growth model based on the coverage information. The new model incorporates the coverage information in the fault detection process by assuming that only the faults in the covered constructs are detectable. Since the coverage growth behavior depends on the testing strategy, the fault detection process is first modeled for the general testing strategy and then realized for the uniform testing. Finally the model for the uniform testing is empirically evaluated by applying it to real data sets.

  • The design of safety computer system is described along with the case of software design and testing in the Core Protection Calculator System (CPCS). The application of computer system in safety system requires not only hardware qualification but thorough testing on software to verify its correctness and completeness. The testing on software for CPCS is performed by comparing the outputs of two versions of code. One is implemented in assembly language and the other is in Fortran. The testing is performed in sequencial and overlapping manner. Phase I test verifies that each software module is implemented correctly by executing every branch. Phase II test verifies that the integrated software is complete, meeting its requirements specification and also the integrated system meet its requirement and timing constraints. Through these testing, the Yonggwang Nuclear Power Plant Units (YGN) 3 and 4 CPCS software is verified to be correct and complete, and the integrated system is designed as in its requirements specification.

  • Rapid increase of embedded systems in electronic and mechanical control systems requires reliable and error-free embedded software. State-based testing methods like FSM are usually used to assure the reliability of embedded software. However, because of possibility of explosion of test cases, only partial test cases are considered in practical tests, which cannot guarantee that all the possible errors are investigated. This study proposes a test procedure based on failure mechanisms that may occur in embedded systems, which can not only assure that certain kinds of possible errors are detected but reduce the testing time. The proposed procedure is applied to vehicle air control system.

  • In the testing of a software component-based robot system, generating test cases for the system is a time-consuming and difficult task that requires the combining of test data. This paper proposes an adaptive combinatorial testing method which is based on the input/output relationship among components and which automatically generates the test cases for the system. The proposed algorithm first generates an input/output relationship graph in order to analyze the input/output relationship of the system. It then generates the reduced set of test cases according to the analyzed type of input/output relationship. To validate the proposed algorithm some comparisons are given in terms of the time complexity and the number of test cases.

  • This paper presents a new approach to automotive embedded systems development and validation. Recently automotive embedded systems become even more complex and the product life cycle is getting reduced. To overcome these problems AUTOSAR, a standardized software platform and component based approach, was introduced. Model-based approach has been widely applied in the development of embedded systems and has strong benefits such as early validation and automated testing. In this paper cooperative development and validation of AUTOSAR and model-based approach are introduced and automated testing techniques are proposed. With the proposed techniques we can improve complexity management through increased reuse and exchangeability of software module and automated testing is realized.

  • A simulation of eddy current testing has been utilized for predicting the signal characteristics to the various defects and developing the probes. Especially, CIVA which is a simulation tool dedicated to nondestructive testing has a good accuracy and speed, and provides a three-dimensional graphical user interface for improved visualization and familiar data displays consistent with NDE technique. Although internal validations have been performed by the CIVA software development specialists, an independent validation study is necessary for the accuracy assessment of the software prior to practical use. For this purpose, in this study, eddy current testing signals of ASME FBH calibration standard tube for bobbin probe were simulated using CIVA and the results were compared to the experimental inspected signals based on the relationship between each flaw signal in terms of amplitude and phase, and the shape of the Lissajous curve. And then we verified the accuracy of the simulated signals and the possible range for simulation. Overall, there is a good qualitative agreement between the CIVA simulated and experimental results in the absolute and differential modes at the two inspection frequencies.
