  • In this paper, we summarize the lessons learned from the applications of the software reliability engineering to a large-scale software project. The considered software is the software system of the TDX-10 ISDN switching system. The considered software consists of many components, called functional blocks. These functional blocks serve as the unit of coding and test. The software is continuing to be developed by adding new functional blocks. We are mainly concerned with the analysis of the effects of these software components to software reliability and with the analysis of the reliability evolution. We analyze the static characteristics of the software related to software reliability using failure data collected during system test. We also discussed a pattern which represents a local and global growth of the software reliability as version evolves. To find the pattern of software of the TDX-10 ISDN system, we apply the S-shaped model to a collection of failure data sets of each evolutionary version and the Goel-Okumoto (G-O) model to a grouped overall failure data set. We expect this pattern analysis will be helpful to plan and manage necessary human/resources for a new similar software project which is developed under the same developing circumstances by estimating the total software failures with respect to its size and time.

  • Recently, component-based software development is getting accepted in industry as a new effective software development paradigm. Since the introduction of component-based software engineering (CBSE) in later 90's, the CBSD research has focused largely on component modeling, methodology, architecture and component platform. However, as the number of components available on the market increases, it becomes more important to devise metrics to quantify the various characteristics of components. In this Paper, we propose metrics for measuring the complexity, customizability, and reusability of software components. Complexity metric can be used to evaluate the complexity of components. Customizability is used to measure how efficiently and widely the components can be customized for organization specific requirement. Reusability can be used to measure the degree of features that are reused in building applications. We expect that these metrics can be effectively used to quantify the characteristics of components.

  • The accuracy of global navigation satellite system(GNSS) positioning has been studied during the last decades. Early GPS software was developed as monolithic tool in which all functions packed in the same software. But, these GPS software have the problems of the high cost of constructing system. close system architecture and the reusability. And there is a lack of interoperability between them because most of them have their own unique data format according to their application fields. In this paper, we have introduced requirements for design and specifications based on business process for the GPS system. commonly used to extract components from the requirements of the GPS business-based development process is presented. These components extracted by the process can be used to assemble components only. In particular, applications for developers to add features specific case without affecting the other components that can be modify the component.

  • Software reuse is a method which increases the productivity of software, nevertheless software reuse is not employed well in real world. One of the important factors occured this proplem is insufficinet inforamtion in understanding and adapting the existing components. Understanding and adapting of components can be measured emplying user's experience and the attributes which the existing programs provide. Especially user's experience is very important attribute in understanding and adapting components, and it can't be measured by simple metrics. We propose in this paper, the reuse-easingess measurement system using fuzzy logic. This system can provide information regarding reusing components by reflecting user's experience from user's point of view, and can reduce the reuse effort signinificantly.

  • Hardware-software codesign becomes improtant to effectively sagisfy perfomrance goals, because designers can trade-off in the way hardware and software components work teogether to exhibit a specified behavior. In this paper, a hardware-software pratitioning algorithm is presetned, in which the system behavioral description containing a mixture of hardware and software components is partitioned into hardware part and software part. The partitioning algorithm tries to minimize the given cost function under constraints on hardware resources or latency. Recursive moving of operations between the hardware and software parts is used to find a near optimum partition and the list scheduling approach is used to estimate the hardware area and latency. Since memory may take substantial protion of the hardware part, memory cost is included in sthe hardware cost. Experimental resutls show that our algorithm is effective.

  • This paper describes a model-based software development methodology for AUTOSAR-ready light software architecture(AUTOSAR-Lite). The proposed methodology briefly represents an application software modeling technique using Matlab/Simulink. Using the proposed technique, application software architecture elements (e.g. software components, runnables, and interfaces) and functional behaviors can be designed in a single modeling environment. From the designed model, the codes of application software is automatically generated using Real-Time Workshop Embedded Coder. The generated application software is easily integrated with hand-coded basic software using the proposed method. In order to evaluate the proposed methodology, a diesel engine management system for a passenger car was employed as a case study. Based on the methodology, 8 atomic software components and 52 runnables are successfully developed, and they are evaluated by engine experiments. From this case study, AUTOSAR compatible model-based application software was successfully developed, and the effectiveness of the proposed methodology was evaluated.

  • Embedded products are becoming richer in features. Simulation tools facilitate low-costs and the efficient development of embedded systems. SID is an open source simulation software that includes a library of components for modeling hardware and software components. SID components were originally written using C/C++ and Tcl/Tk. Tcl/Tk has mainly been used for GUI simulation in the SID system. However, Tcl/Tk components are hampered by low performance, and GUI development using Tcl/Tk also has poor flexibility. Therefore, it would be desirable to use a more advanced programming language, such as Java, to provide simulations of cutting-edge products with rich graphics. Here, we describe the development of the Java Bridge Module as a middleware that will enable the use of Java Components in SID. We also extended the low-level SID API to Java. In addition, we have added classes that contain default implementations of the API. These classes are intended to ensure the compatibility and simplicity of SID components in Java.

  • Recently, the necessity of accessing spatial data from remote computer via network has been increased as distributed spatial data have been increased due to their size and cost. Many methods have been used in recent years for transferring spatial data, such as socket, CORBA, HTTP, RPC, FTP, etc. In this paper, we propose spatial clearinghouse components to access distributed spatial data sources via CORBA and Internet. The spatial clearinghouse components are defined as OLE/COM components that enable users to access spatial data that meet their requests from remote computer. For reusability, we design the spatial clearinghouse with UML and implement it as a set of components. In order to enhance interoperability among different platforms in distributed computing environment, we adopt international standards and open architecture such as CORBA, HTTB, and OpenGIS Simple Features Specifications. There are two kinds of spatial clearinghouse: CORBA-based spatial clearinghouse and Internet-based spatial clearinghouse. The CORBA-based spatial clearinghouse supports COM-CORBA bridge to access spatial data from remote data providers that satisfy the OpenGIS Simple Features Specification for OLE/COM using COM and CORBA interfaces. The Internet-based spatial clearinghouse provides Web-service components to access spatial data from remote data providers using Web-browser.

  • There has recently been a trend that IT industry is united with traditional industries such as military, aviation, automobile, and medical industry. Therefore, embedded software which controls hardware of the system should guarantee the high reliability, availability, and maintainability. To guarantee these properties, there are many attempts to develop the embedded software based on COTS (Commercial Off The Shelf) hardware components. However, it can cause additional faults due to software/hardware interactions beside general software faults in this methodology. We called the faults, Linkage Fault. These faults have high severity that makes overall system shutdown although their occurrence frequency is extremely low. In this paper, we propose a new software reliability model which considers those linkage faults in embedded software development with COTS hardware components. We use the Bayesian Analysis and Markov Chain Monte-Cairo method to validate the model. In addition, we analyze real linkage fault data to support the results of the theoretical model.
