Case Study of Software Education for Students of Child Welfare Center (지역아동센터 학생 대상 소프트웨어교육 사례)

  • Software education enhances creative thinking and critical thinking for students living in the era of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, and helps them choose jobs in software-related industries. This study is an example of software education applied to the vulnerable students of the child welfare center to narrow the software gap and achieve the equity in education. This education was conducted in Unplugged activity, Entry coding, and Physical computing classes for 170 students from 20 institutions in South Chungcheong Province, North Chungcheong Province, and Daejeon city in Korea. The curriculum utilized a total of four types of student and teacher level materials, with a total of 10 hours of classes per child welfare center. In addition, the surveys of the students and institutions confirmed that this education influenced their interest in software education and their desire for continuous software education.

Optimized Implementation of Interpolation Filters for HEVC Encoder

  • In this paper, a fast algorithm of discrete cosine transform-based interpolation filter (DCT-IF) for HEVC (high efficiency video coding) encoder is proposed. DCT-IF filter accounts for around 30% of encoder complexity, according to the computational complexity analysis with the HEVC reference software. In this work, the proposed DCT-IF is optimized by applying frame-level interpolation, SIMD optimization, and task-level parallelization via OpenMP on a developed C-based HEVC encoder. Performance analysis is conducted by measuring speed-up factor of the proposed optimization technique on the developed encoder. The results show that speed-up factors by frame-level interpolation, SIMD, and OpenMP are approximately 38-46, 3.6-4.4, and 3.0-3.7, respectively. In the end, we achieved the speed-up factor of 498.4 with the proposed fast algorithm.

  • In order to prevent tampering and reverse engineering of executive code, this paper propose a new tamper resistant software mechanism. This paper presents a cryptographic MAC function and a relationship which has its security level derived by the importance of code block instead of by merely getting the encryption and decryption key from the previous block. In this paper, we propose a cryptographic MAC function which generates a dynamic MAC function key instead of the hash function as written in many other papers. In addition, we also propose a relationships having high, medium and low security levels. If any block is determined to have a high security level then that block will be encrypted by the key generated by the related medium security level block. The low security block will be untouched due to efficiency considerations. The MAC function having this dynamic key and block relationship will make analyzing executive code more difficult.

  • The intake noise, a major source of vehicle noises, has rapidly become a noticeable, and has been studied to reduce the level. Traditionally, the intake system has been developed through a experiment, namely, the trial and error process. This approach requires very high cost and long time consuming to develop the systm. Recently, FEM and BEM are becoming useful in analysis of the intake system, and the results of analysis are very valid. But because this techniques also require high cost and long analysis time, this technique is generally not practical tool at the early stage of the development. In this study, the software was developed to predict and analyze the acoustic characteristics of the intake system. It was based on the Transfer Matrix Method and operated to analyze a simplified intake system in a personal computer. It can be used early in the design stage of development of the intake system. This study presented a improvement to reduce the level of the intake noise, which modified the specification of the intake system. And the improvement were verified by NIT/SYSNOISE, FE analysis commercial software, and testing a prototype.

SW-HW Co-design of a High-performance Dehazing System Using OpenCL-based High-level Synthesis Technique (OpenCL 기반의 상위 수준 합성 기술을 이용한 고성능 안개 제거 시스템의 소프트웨어-하드웨어 통합 설계)

  • This paper presents a high-performance software-hardware dehazing system based on a dedicated hardware accelerator for the haze removal. In the proposed system, the dedicated hardware accelerator performs the dark-channel-prior-based dehazing process, and the software performs the other control processes. For this purpose, the dehazing process is realized as an OpenCL kernel by finding the inherent parallelism in the algorithm and is synthesized into a hardware by employing a high-level-synthesis technique. The proposed system executes the dehazing process much faster than the previous software-only dehazing system: the performance improvement is up to 96.3% in terms of the execution time.

  • Nighttime construction is being adopted by many state DOT's as a way to mitigate the impact of construction operations on the traveling public. Although a number of states have developed standard specifications for nighttime lighting, these standards are usually in the form of generic requirement statements that only specify minimum illuminance levels. The lighting standards do not include specific ways to achieve this illuminance level such as lighting arrangements and configurations for various work zone plans and construction operations. This leaves confusion between the traffic engineers and the contractors and does not guarantee consistency in those plans, thus affecting productivity and safety (lighting conditions account for 18% to 28% of work zone accidents). The main objective of this study is to utilize three dimensional animation and lighting analysis software to study and model lighting conditions of a construction site. This is expected to increase the safety and productivity of construction operations by achieving consistency in work zone lighting schemes. A computerized model was developed, called Nitelite. Various lighting schemes can be studied using the software to provide for typical applications including lighting fixture's locations, luminance, mounting height, tilt angle, and fixture type. The results from the developed software tool were validated through comparisons with previous research conducted using field measurements.

  • Recently, BIM has been widely applying in civil engineering projects centering on the private construction industry in order to establish self guidelines for spreading in practice. However, most BIM technologies and software are based on the architectural projects. In these environments, it is not easy to apply the BIM to a infrastructure field. Even BIM standards with IFC (Industry Foundation Classes) are also focusing on architectural projects. Especially, both private and public sectors do not know about how BIM delivery system should be performed, and how such deliverable should be submitted to the government yet. Thus, we need to analyze an application level of BIM S/W (Software) in real projects and verify their interoperability. Besides, since there are not any common standards that can exchange IFC models for civil engineering projects, we have many issues in converting as-built infrastructure models into IFC and delivering their design documents to the government. Accordingly, this study aims to perform a BIM process with commercial software for real road project after a detailed design process is finished and verify interoperability between diverse BIM software for securing BIM data reliability.

Open Source Remote Sensing of ORFEO Toolbox and Its Connection to Database of PostGIS with NIX File Importing

  • In recent, interests regarding open source software for geo-spatial processing are increasing. Open source remote sensing (OSRS) is regarded as one of the progressing and advanced fields in remote sensing. Nevertheless, analyses or application cases regarding OSRS are not enough for general uses or references. In this study, three kinds of OSRS software in consideration of international popularity, types of functionalities, and development environments are taken into account: OSSIM, Opticks, and ORFEO Toolbox (OTB). First, functional comparison with respect to these is carried out on the level of the preliminary survey. According to this investigation, OTB is chosen as the most applicable OSRS software in this study. Running on OTB, NIX format importing module and database connecting module are implemented for widely general uses and further application. As for an example case, airborne image of NIX format is used to region growing segmentation algorithm in OTB, and then the results are stored and retrieved in PostGIS database to test implemented modules. Conclusively, local customization and algorithm development using OSRS software are necessary to build on-demand applications from the developers' viewpoint.

Improving cyclic behavior of multi-level pipe damper using infill or slit diaphragm inside inner pipe

  • Analytical and experimental studies of the innovative pipe in pipe damper have been recently investigated by the authors. In this paper, by adding lead or zinc infill or slit diaphragm inside the inner pipe, it is tried to increase the equivalent viscous damping ratio improving the cyclic performance of the recently proposed multi-level control system. The damper consists of three main parts including the outer pipe, inner pipe and added complementary damping part. At first plastic deformations of the external pipe, then the internal pipe and particularly the added core and friction between them make the excellent multi-level damper act as an improved energy dissipation system. Several kinds of added lead or zinc infill and also different shapes of slit diaphragms are modeled inside the inner pipe and their effectiveness on hysteresis curves are investigated with nonlinear static analyses using finite element method by ABAQUS software. Results show that adding lead infill has no major effect on the damper stiffness while zinc infill and slit diaphragm increase damper stiffness sharply up to more than 10 times depending on the plate thickness and pipe diameter. Besides, metal infill increases the viscous damping ratio of dual damper ranging 6-9%. In addition, obtained hysteresis curves show that the multi-level control system as expected can reliably dissipate energy in different imposed energy levels.
