  • This paper proposes a zero-current-transition(ZCT) synchronous buck converter using auxiliary circuit with soft-switching for light weight and high efficiency. In this scheme, an auxiliary circuit is added to the conventional synchronous rectifier buck converter and used to achieve soft-switching condition for both the main switch and synchronous switch. In addition, the switch in the auxiliary circuit operates under soft-switching conditions. Thus, the proposed converter provides a higher efficiency. The basic operations, in this paper, are discussed and design guidelines are presented. The usefulness of the proposed converter is verified on a 200KHz, 20 W prototype converter.

The circuit achieves high efficiency and low voltage stress by adopting a soft switching method using LC resonance. This paper gives a mathematical analysis of each mode and a detailed design procedure of the proposed boost converter. First of all, the operational principles are verified through simulation results. Then, according to the design procedure, we designed and built a 1.5[kW] prototype soft switching boost converter. Through the experimental results, we demonstrated the validity and usefulness of the proposed boost converter.

  • This paper proposes the interleaved buck converter using a soft switching auxiliary circuit. In this scheme, an auxiliary circuit is added to the conventional interleaved buck converter and used to achieve soft-switching conditions for both the main switch and freewheeling diode. In addition, the switch in the auxiliary circuit operates under soft-switching conditions. Also, according to the input to output conditions, the main switch achieved zero-current-transition(ZCT) or zero-current & zero-voltage-transition(ZCZVT) at turn on. Thus, the proposed interleaved buck converter provides a higher efficiency. The basic operations, in this paper, are discussed and design guidelines are presented. The usefulness of the proposed converter is verified on a 200kHz, 180W prototype converter.

  • In this paper, a soft-switching scheme for the PWM interleaved buck converter(IBC) is newly proposed to obtain the advantages of both the conventional PWM interleaved buck and resonant converters such as ease of control, reduced switching losses and stresses, and low EMI. To obtain the soft-switching action, the proposed scheme employs an auxiliary circuit, which is added to the conventional interleaved buck converter and used to achieve soft-switching for both the main switches and the output diodes while not incurring any additional losses due to the auxiliary circuit itself. In this paper, the basic operations are discussed and design guidelines are presented. And through the experimental results, the usefulness of the proposed converter is verified.

  • This study deals with a bidirectional interleaved soft switching DC-DC converter for a wide range of input voltages. The proposed converter operates in complementary switching with the purpose of inductor size reduction and zero-voltage switching (ZVS) operation. The current ripple related to complementary switching is minimized by three-phase interleaved operation. The main characteristics of the proposed topology are its soft-switching method of operation and its simple structure. The soft-switching operation and the system efficiency of the proposed converter are verified by experimental results.

  • In this paper, the loss analyses of two soft switching techniques for two-transistor forward converter are performed. The sums of snubber conduction and capacitive turn-on losses for two transistors are calculated to compare the losses of the two techniques. While the conventional soft switching technique shows the loss difference between two transistors, the proposed soft switching technique shows equal as well as lower losses In two transistors. Thus, it can be said that even thermal distribution and higher reliability can be obtained by the proposed soft switching technique.

  • This paper proposes a novel soft starting algorithm by using PWM inverter technique to control an amplitude of the motor starting current at a single-phase induction motor (SPIM). Traditional SPIM starting methods such as a Split-Phase, Capacitor-Start, Permanent-Split Capacitor (PSC), Capacitor-Start Capacitor-Run (CSCR), basically cannot control the magnitude of starting current due to the fixed system structures. Therefore, in this paper, a soft starting algorithm based on a proportional resonant (PR) control with a variable and constant frequency is proposed to reduce the inrush current and starting up time. In addition, a transition algorithm for operation modes is devised to generate a constant voltage and constant frequency (CVCF). The validity and effectiveness of the proposed soft starting method and transition algorithm are verified through experimental results.

  • In this paper, we propose a new approach to noise estimation incorporating spectral deviation with soft decision scheme to enhance the intelligibility of the degraded speech signal in non-stationary noisy environments. Since the conventional noise estimation technique based on soft decision scheme estimates and updates the noise power spectrum using a fixed smoothing parameter which was assumed in stationary noisy environments, it is difficult to obtain the robust estimates of noise power spectrum in non-stationary noisy environments that spectral characteristics of noise signal such as restaurant constantly change. In this paper, once we first classify the stationary noise and non-stationary noise environments based on the analysis of spectral deviation of noise signal, we adaptively estimate and update the noise power spectrum according to the classified noise types. The performances of the proposed algorithm are evaluated by ITU-T P. 862 perceptual evaluation of speech quality (PESQ) under various ambient noise environments and show better performances compared with the conventional method.

  • In this paper, a high frequency flyback type zero voltage soft switching PWM DC-DC converter using IGBTs is proposed. Effective applications for this power converter can be found in auxiliary power supplies of rolling stock transportation and electric vehicles. This power converter is basically composed of active power switches and a flyback high frequency transformer. In addition to these, passive lossless snubbers with power regeneration loops for energy recovery, consisting of a three winding auxiliary high frequency transformer, auxiliary capacitors and diodes are introduced to achieve zero voltage soft switching from light to full load conditions. Furthermore, this power converter has some advantages such as low cost circuit configuration, simple control scheme and high efficiency. Its operating principle is described and to determine circuit parameters, some practical design considerations are discussed. The effectiveness of the proposed power converter is evaluated and compared with the hard switching PWM DC-DC converter from an experimental point of view and the comparative electromagnetic conduction and radiation noise characteristics of both DC-DC power converter circuits are also depicted.
