Neocaridina denticulata is a small freshwater shrimp indigenous to Korea. As an indigenous species has long-adapted to particular water environments, the species can be a suitable indicator to assess environmental risks caused by hazard chemicals in the particular site. Thus Neocaridina denticulata, a small freshwater shrimp indigenous to Korea, is worth considering for a test species for such purpose. N. denticulata were exposed to pentachlorophenol sodium salt, sodium azide and potassium dichromate using automatic flow-through system for 96 hours. The 96 hr lethal concentrations ($LC_{50}$) of these chemicals were calculated as $0.53{\pm}0.09\;mg/L$, $2.40{\pm}0.61\;mg/L$ and $1.21{\pm}0.09\;mg/L$ respectively and showed relatively small deviation from repetitive test results. When compared with the toxicity values of other species for each chemical, N. denticulata had moderate or high sensitivity to the toxicity of these chemicals. It can be concluded that N. denticulata is a good test species to evaluate acute toxicity of various hazardous chemicals.

2,4-Dinitrophenol(DNP) is a metabolic uncoupler that prevents cells from creating energy for growth and it has been suggested that the availability of sodium ions may be important in mitigating the effects of uncouplers. Accordingly, the degradation of DNP was investigated using activated sludge which had been adapted to mineralize DNP. After the acclimation of the activated sludge, the effect of sodium ions on the toxicity of high concentrations(80 to 100mg/L) of DNP was investigated over a sodium ion concentration range of 9.3$\times$10-5 to 94mM. The concentration of sodium ions in the activated sludge mixed liquor seemed to have little effect on the DNP toxicity. However, a lack of sodium in the grwoth media resulted in a reduction of the DNP degradation rate by a bacterial isolate from the activated sludge culture identified as Nocardia asteroides.

This study was conducted to examine the functionality of the fire retardant treated wood. The hygroscopic property, leaching resistance, metal corrosive efficacy and gas toxicity of retardant treated wood were analyzed. Sodium silicate was penetrated to the wood for making fire retardant treated wood. The subsequent treatment agents such as boric acid, ammonium borate, di-ammonium phosphate were treated after sodium silicate treatment due to fixation. As results for the test, the leaching resist was improved by subsequent treatment. The fire retardant combination such as sodium silicate, boric acid and di-ammonium phosphate showed high hygroscopic property, metal corrosive efficacy. The gas toxicity was also satisfied KS standard.
This study was investigated to evaluate the effect of the sodium ion and pH on toxicity of dinitrophenol at high concentrations (0.41 to 0.54 mM), over a sodium concentration range of 0.1 mM to 107 mM and over a pH range of 5 to 9. The concentration of sodium ions in the activated sludge mixed liquor seemed to have very little effect on dinitrophenol toxicity. However, lack of sodium in the growth media resulted in a reduction of the dinitrophenol degradation rate by bacterial isolate from the activated sludge culture, which has been identified as Nocardia asteroides. Dinitrophenol inhibition was found to be strongly dependent on mixed liquor pH. The dinitrophenol degradation rate was highest in the pH range of 6.95 to 7.84; at pH 5.94 degradation of 75 mg/L dinitrophenol was significantly inhibited; at pH < 5.77, dinitrophenol degradation was completely inhibited after approximately 30% of the dinitrophenol was degraded.
The objective of this investigation was to characterize the subacute toxic potency of orally administered poly(sodium acrylic acid-acrylic acid), super absorbent polymer. Four groups of rats were maintained on diets containing 0, 1.25, 2.5 or 5% of poly(sodium acrylic acid-acrylic acid). The mean dosages of poly(sodium acrylic acid-acrylic acid) were estimated to be 1025 mg/kg/day, 2009 mg/kg/day and 4728 mg/kg/day in the male groups. The estimated average dosages of poly(sodium acrylic acid-acrylic acid) in the female groups were 1011 mg/kg/day, 2088 mg /kg/day and 4576 mg/kg/day, respectively. Few test compound-related toxic effects were observed in body weight gain, clinical signs, hematological parameters and serum biochemical values. Urinalyses, gross necropsy and histopathology revealed no evidence of specific toxicity. Food and water consumption tended to increase in the animals fed the diet of 2.5% and 5%. Our data indicate that no-observed effect level of poly(sodium acrylic acid-acrylic acid) was estimated to be 1.25% in the diet (mean dosage: 1025 mg/kg/day in male rats, 1011 mg/kg/day in female rats).
To evaluate the cytogenetic toxicity, of cadmium and the reducing effect of selenium or zinc on cadmium toxicity, the induction of SCEs in cultured human lymphocytes by the concentraion of 0.5 $\mu$M to 16.0 $\mu$M of cadmium chloride and those of cadmium chloride combined with sodium selenite or zinc chloride 1.2 $\mu$M, respectively was investigated. The induction of SCEs by cadmium chloride in the range of 0.5 $\mu$M to 16.0 $\mu$M increased in a dose-dependent manner. A notable increase in SCEs by sodium selenite as well as zinc chloride was also observed. However, the frequency of SCEs by cadmium chloride was inhibited by the simultaneous addition of sodium selenite and zinc chloride 1.2 $\mu$M, respectively. The mitotic index significantly decreased in higher concentration of cadmium chloride but not was significantly different in any concentration of cadmium chloride with the simultaneous addition of sodium selenite or zinc chloride. The results showed that the decreased additive SCE effect was observed when induced by the combined treatment which could suggest that sodium selenite and zinc chloride have a protective effect on cadmium chloride.
Ethanolic leaf extract of Bauhinia variegata has been tested for its possible antioxidant potentials against sodium arsenite induced toxicity in mice. Mice were randomized into two groups of five and fifty mice. Group I consisting of 5 mice without any treatment with food and water ad libitum which served as normal control. Group II mice were fed with sodium arsenite in drinking water at 100 ppm concentration for two monthsthen they were segregated into five groups which were treated differently. Group II a mice received only arsenic as sodium arsenite with drinking water, Group II b were fed chronically 1 : 20 alcohol to distilled water (vehicle), Group II c, d, e mice were orally fed 50 mg/kg, 150 mg/kg and 250 mg/kg of B. variegata leaf extract of once daily for 15 and 30 days respectively along with arsenic. Several toxicity marker enzymes such as gamma glutamyl transferase, lactate dehydrogenase, aspartate and alanine aminotransferase, acid and alkaline phosphatase, catalase and superoxide dismutase along with haematological variables such as glucose 6-phosphate dehydrogenase, creatinine, bilirubin, haemoglobin and sugar in different groups of treated and control mice were studied. Results obtained from the in vivo experiment revealed that administration of sodium arsenite caused a significant increase in some enzymes while decrease in some. A similar trend was also observed with haematological variables. In contrast B. variegata treatment at 150 mg/kg favourably modulated these alterations and maintained the antioxidant status than other two doses i.e. 50 mg/kg and 250 mg/kg thereby making it a good candidate to be used as supportive palliating measures in arsenic induced toxicity.
The acute toxicity of orally administered poly(sodium acrylic acid-acrylic acid), powerfully water-absorbent polymer, was el'aluated in Sprague-Dawley rats and feR mice. Rats and mice aging 6 weeks were gavaged with 0, 2.0, 3.0, 4.4, 6.7, or 10 g of poly(sodium acrylic acidacrylic acid)/kg in com oil. No animal died by treatment and any toxic symptom was not observed in the treated animals during 2 weeks. The body weight of the treated animals was not significantly different from the controls. The results of macroscopic examination on the organs of the treated animals revealed no abnormal findings. Therefore, it was concluded that poly(sodium acrylic acidacrylic acid) was practically non-toxic when it was orally administrated to rats and mice up to 10 g/kg, and its $LD_{50}$ was evaluated more than 10 g/kg in rats and mice.
The effects of ethanol on the toxicity of 2, 4-Dichlorophenoxyacetic acid in ICR mice were examined. The results were summerized as follows; 1. The LD$\sub$50/ of 2.4-dichlorphenoxyacetic acid sodium injected intraperitoneally in mice was approximately 367 mg/kg. When the animals were administered with ethanol, 2 ml/kg or 4 ml/kg the LD$\sub$50/ of 2.4-D sodium were decreased to 338 mg/kg or 32 mg/kg, respectively. 2. In the acute experimental group, spontaneous motor activity in the ANIMEX system exhibited dose-dependent decrease in mice administered with 2.4-D sodium and ethanol. 3. However, in subacute experimental group, spontaneous motor activity in the ANIMEX system exhibited dose-dependent increase in mice treated with ethanol.
