  • The purpose of this study is to develop the dyeing method with dry leaves of indigo plant. Coloring matter was extracted from dry leaves of indigo plant with hot sodium hydroxide solution. The extract was reduced with sodium dithionite, and it was used for dyeing cotton fabrics under various conditions. UV-visible absorption spectra of extract, reduction rate of extracts by reducing agent, and the surface color of dyed cotton, lightfastness were examined. For the initial 20 minutes, the absorbance of indigo solution rapidly decreased. However, several hours later, the decreasing rate retarded. By repeating the dyeing process, the shade looked deeper and deeper. At $30-40^{\circ}C$, the value of K/S reached the highest point. The concentration of indigo solution in dye bath seemed to playa critical role for the reaction of the reducing agent. It was observed that the surface color of cotton fabrics was getting bluish and its degree of value and chroma seemed slightly decreased as the K/S value was increasing. The lightfastness was clearly enhanced by increasing the K/S value.

  • In dyeing cotton fabric with the Indigo Pulverata Levis, this research examined the effect of the sodium dithionite($Na_2S_2O_4$). For the separation of the Indigo-calcium hydroxide complex in the alkaline solution of the Indigo Pulverata Levis, the reduction with the $Na_2S_2O_4$ at $25^{\circ}C$ was more effective than the solution boiling. The concentration of Indigo in the cotton fabric increased with the increase of Indigo Pulverata Levis, but the concentration of indirubin did not increase particularly. The optimum temperature for the reduction was $60^{\circ}C$, and K/S value of dyed fabric decreased at over $60^{\circ}C$. The concentration of indigo and indirubin in the cotton fabric decreased as $Na_2S_2O_4$ concentration increased. In treating cotton fabric dyed with the Indigo Pulverata Levis by the $Na_2S_2O_4$, the concentration of indirubin decreased and the surface color of dyed cotton changed from purple blue to blue while the treatment temperature was getting higher.

  • 4,5-Diphenyl Imidazolone is synthesized from Benzoin, Urea, and Acetic acid catalyser. Nowadays, it is being used as an optical bleaching agent for wool and nylon textiles. Up to now, only one process of synthesis has been known. In order to find out the best conditions governing the yield were examined under various catalysers and conditions. In this experiment, the summary of results were as follows. a. On Acetic acid catalyser. The maximum yield conditions were mol ratio (Benzoin: Urea: Acetic acid) 1 : 2 : 14, Acetic acid concentration 99.9%. Reaction temperature 115$^{\circ}$. Under reaction time of 2 hours, above yield was 96.4%. b. On Mineral acid Catalyser. In using of Sulfonic acid, the color of solution was changed dark purlish black. With other mineral acid catalysers, in spite of increasing of temperature, it was proved that Benzoin floats on the solution, so that this reaction could not be continue. c. On Phosphoric acid catalyser. It was made clear that it can not be used for this reaction. d. On Sodium hydroxide catalyser. As one of Alkali catalyser, Sodium hydroxide was examined but this was unsuitable substance for this reaction. e. On Formic acid catalysers. • Four polymorphic forms (I, II, III and IV) of hydrochlorothiazide have been characterized on the basis of x-ray diffractometry and differential thermal analysis. Form I was obtained by crystallization from N, N-dimethylformamide and Form II was crystallized from hot methanol. Form III was precipitated from sodium hydroxide aqueous solution by treatment with hydrochloric acid and Form IV was crystallized from 50% methanol. The metastable form I was a most stable form among four polymorphs, which was stable more than ten months at room temperature. The thermodynamic parameters such as heat of solution, enthalpy, entropy, free energy difference and transition temperature were determined by the measurement of intrinsic dissolution rate. The transition temperature and the heat of transition between the metastable Form I an Form II were determined to be $299.15^{\circ}$K and 5.03 Kcal/mole, respectively and free energy difference ($\delta$ F) was 302. 13 cal/mole. Diuretic action of these four polymorphic forms was also evaluated by monitoring the difference in urinary excretion of sodium, potassium and magnesium in rats.

  • In order to improve dye uptime and wash fastness on dyeing of cotton fabrics with Amur cork tree, twitter ionic groups, acid groups, hydrophobic groups or cross linkage were introduced into cotton fabrics. Results obtained were as follows, 1 The optimum modification of cotton fabrics was carbosy methylation in the water solution containing 15% sodium chloroacetate and 15% sodium hydroxide and then introducing hydrophobic groups by treating in the solution containing $30m\ell$ DMSO and $3m\ell$ 2,4-TDI 2. Numbers of carbon, diisocyanate group than monoisocyanate group and aromatic compound than aliphatic compound in introduced hydrophobic groups were effective. 3. The dye uptake and wash fastness wore enhanced significantly by treating only with 2,4-TDI. 4. The wash fastness seems to correlate to the degree of swelling of the fabric during washing and also depend on the Interaction between dyes and acid groups as well as hydrophobic groups.

  • Industrial use of waste oyster shells is limited because of requiring excessive energy for converting natural oyster shells in the form of calcium carbonate ($CaCO_3$) into calcium oxide (CaO) for this purpose. This study aimed to develop energy-saving process for producing solidifying agent using waste oyster shells for backfill materials. It was suggested that oyster shells were converted to calcium sulfates which were mixed with sodium hydroxide solution and red clay, forming solid specimen. The optimal concentrations of sulfuric acid for sulfation of oyster shell and sodium hydroxide to generate calcium hydroxide ($Ca(OH)_2$), were determined. Unconfined compressive strength of solid specimen increased with increasing the content of solidifying agent while it increased also with increasing ratio of natural oyster shells to coal ash. The result clearly demonstrates that solidifying agent consisting of sulfuric acid-treated oyster shell, coal ash, and sodium hydroxide solution, can be effectively utilized for preparing backfill materials using natural oyster shell and coal ash. Sulfuric acid-treated oyster shell-based solidifying agent has not been previously developed and will contribute to broaden industrial application of waste oyster shells.

  • The objective of this study was to investigate the efficient pretreatment method for bioethanol production from rice hull. Ammonia and sodium hydroxide as an alkaline solution and dilute sulfuric acid as an acidic solution were used in a batch reactor under high-temperature and high-pressure conditions. The highest enzymatic saccharification efficiency of 82.8% and ash removal rate of 94.7% were obtained in the dilute sulfuric acid treated sample after the sodium hydroxide solution treatment. The enzymatic saccharification efficiencies and ash removals of pretreated rice hull samples have very similar variation tendency. This means that the maximum obstructive factor for the enzymatic saccharification of rice hull is the ash (silicate) content in biomass. The findings suggest that the combined sodium hydroxide-dilute sulfuric acid treatment system under high-temperature and high-pressure conditions is a promising pretreatment method to enhance the enzymatic saccharification of the silica-rich biomass.

  • Gallium is an important material and is used by industry of oxide semi-conductor and LED chip. However, the most of the gallium-containing waste resources became outflow abroad and the most of which is imported from oversea by following technical problem and low circulation rate. In this research, the recovery of high purity Gallium metal from Gallium scrap, which containing about 30% of Gallium, was investigated by using hydro-metallurgical process. As pretreatment, the Gallium scrap was pulverized and leached by strong acid such as hydro chloric acid. At the leached solution, Indium was separated as an Indium sponge by substitution reaction and then Gallium and Zinc hydroxide separated and filtrated using strong alkaline solution such as sodium hydroxide by precipitation method. Also, Gallium metal and Zinc metal was recovered by electrowinning method. To make an electrolytic solution, Gallium and Zinc hydroxide was leached by strong alkaline solution. Finally, High purity Gallium metal was recovered by vacuum refining process to remove the Zinc impurity.

  • Bleaching effect of ozone on unsaturated coloring material was compared quantitatively with the change of composition of reactants through the ozone oxidation of ${\beta}$-carotene. Beeswax colorized by carotenoids was reacted with ozone in water, 0.5 % and 1.0 % sodium hydroxide solution, and 20 % and 95 % acetic acid solution and bleaching effect of each reaction condition was compared with each other. And then the additive effect of hydrogen peroxide was investigated. Decrease of unsaturated double bond of ${\beta}$-carotene was proportioned quantitatively to the bleaching effect of ozone on ${\beta}$-carotene and was in accordance with the bleaching effect on beeswax. The bleaching effect of ozone on coloring material in 1.0 % sodium hydroxide solution was better than any other condition and the absorbance of beeswax at 390 nm was improved to 0.045 with the addition of hydrogen peroxide(2 % of wax). For the bleaching of beeswax, it was concluded that the ozone oxidation was more effective than physical adsorption.
