Mothers play a major role in children's consumer socialization but little is known about differences in mother's consumer socialization tendencies and the antecedents causing the differences. This study addresses two research questions: First, what are the underlying dimensions of mother's consumer socialization? Second, what are the antecedent variables causing differences in mother's consumer socialization tendencies; can parental style, consumption-related attitudes (attitude toward marketplace and ads., attitude toward consumerism and consumption-oriented attitude) be used as a conceptual basis for hypothesizing these differences? The findings of this research were as follows: 1. Factor analysis suggested five underlying dimensions of mother's consumer socialization of children; Mother-child communication about consumption, Mediation of media, Reaction to purchase requests, Restriction of allowances and Restriction of consumption. 2. The differences in the mother's consumer socialization tendencies among different parental groups matched the differences in child-rearing behaviour suggested by Developmental Psychology and this provided support for expected relationships between general-consumer socialization tendencies, as measured by mothers' behaviour. 3. Differences were found on all factors according to mothers consumption-related attitude. This provided support for the expectation that mothers' consumption related attitudes are important antecedent variables causing differences in consumer socialization tendencies. Some implications and directions for future research were discussed.
Purpose : The concept of organizational socialization has been regarded as an abstract concept of organizational learning process and it has been used as strategy for the organizational goal attainment. New graduated nurses' organizational socialization has been a very important process for learning knowledge, skills and behaviors in hospital setting. This study was to analyze and clarify the meaning of the concept of Organizational Socialization. Method : This study use the process of Walker & Avant's concept analysis. Results : The critical attributes of organizational socialization were identified as : 1) Internalization of Value and belief of organization; 2) Learning of organizational rules and modes of living; 3) Improvement of job performance; 4) Maintenance of supportive relationship; 5) Formation of occupational identity. The antecedents of organizational socialization consist of those facts that 1) negative feeling of role; 2) difficulties of interpersonal relationship; 3) unskilled work performance. And the consequences of organizational socialization consist of those facts that 1) organizational commitment; 2) job satisfaction; 3) intention of leave work setting; 4) improvement of job performance; 5) improvement of decision making; 6) maintenance of supportive relationship. Conclusion : Through this concept analysis, the concept of organizational socialization is defined as internalization of value and belief of organization, learning of organizational rules and modes of living, improvement of job performance, maintenance of supportive relationship and formation of occupational identity.
This study conceptualized the factors affecting college students' consumer decision-making styles from the perspective of consumer socialization. A number of antecedent variables identified by preceding studies (age, gender, place where one grew up, job experience, main reason for working, amount of allowance, family income, socio-economic status) and socialization agents such as family, peers, mass media were included in the analysis. This study extends previous studies by examining a theoretical link between the antecedent variables and socialization agents. Three hundred and forty one undergraduate students in Daejeon were participated in this study. Stepwise multiple regression md path analysis were conducted. The results of this study are as follows: 1. Six consumer decision-making styles were identified. 2. The influence of the socialization agents, especially mass media and several antecedent variables, especially gender and main reason for working, played important roles in consumer decision-making styles. 3. Several antecedent variables, especially gender and family income, were related only with the influence of socialization agents. 4. Six path-analysis models that illustrate the relationships among the antecedent variables, the socialization agents and consumer decision-making styles were proposed.
Objectives: This study investigated the factors influencing organizational socialization of new dental hygienists and provides basic data for successful organizational socialization. Methods: Data were collected using self-report questionnaires from 199 new dental hygienists of dental clinic and hospital between June and September 2018. Data analysis using SPSS 22.0 included Independent t-test, one way ANOVA, Scheffe post-hoc test, Pearson correlation coefficients, and multiple regression analysis. Results: The new dental hygienists' professional self-concept, interpersonal ability, and organizational socialization value were $3.27{\pm}0.50$, $3.55{\pm}0.45$, and $3.03{\pm}0.37$, respectively. There were significant positive correlations between professional self-concepts, interpersonal relations, and organizational socialization. A positive correlation was found between professional self-concept and interpersonal relations. Factors affecting organizational socialization of new dental hygienists included the strength of work, interpersonal relations, and professional self-concept. Professional self-concept was the most influential factor leading to 54.7% of the variance in organizational socialization. Conclusions: Therefore, to improve the organizational socialization of new dental hygienists and reduce the turnover rate, it is necessary to develop and implement programs promoting professional self-concept and interpersonal relations.
The purpose of this study was to explore ethnic socialization enacted by Japanese marriage migrant women currently raising 7- to 18-year-old children in Korea. To accomplish this goal, we examined the following research questions: (1) What is the level of ethnic socialization enacted by Japanese marriage migrant mothers? (2) Does the level of ethnic socialization vary by demographic and ethnocultural factors? (3) To what extent do demographic and ethnocultural factors influence the enactment of ethnic socialization by Japanese marriage migrant mothers? The sample consisted of 243 Japanese marriage migrant women currently raising 7- to 18-year-old children in Korea. For data analysis, T-test, correlation, ANOVA, and hierarchical regression analyses were used. Also, we performed separate analyses for two subtypes of ethnic socialization in particular, namely cultural socialization and preparation for bias. Ethnocultural factors examined in this study were the level of discrimination experience, Japanese ethnic identity, and husbands' ethnic orientation in childrearing. The main results of this study were as follows. First, results showed that Japanese marriage migrant women enacted moderate levels of cultural socialization and preparation for bias. Second, Japanese marriage migrant women's cultural socialization and preparation for bias were both positively related to the levels of women's discrimination experience and Japanese ethnic identity. Also, the younger the age of the firstborn child, the more preparation for bias these women performed. In addition, women whose Korean husbands wanted to raise their children more biculturally performed more cultural socialization compared to those with Korean husbands who wanted to raise their children as Korean. Third, hierarchical regression analyses revealed that women's discrimination experience and ethnic identity positively predicted both types of ethnic socialization. Also, Korean husband's bicultural orientation towards childrearing predicted a higher level of cultural socialization by Japanese marriage migrant women. Results of this study provide basic information about ethnic socialization among multicultural families in Korea, which can be useful for promoting positive self-identity among multicultural children. Furthermore, the results suggest that husbands' support and cooperation in ethnic socialization can be crucial for marriage migrant women to socialize their children utilizing their cultural and experiential resources.
Family environment plays a significant role in adolescent development. Multicultural adolescents in Korea are brought up in a distinctive family environment, where they get to experience two different cultures within their families. Thus, it is important to examine how internal characteristics of the family environment in multicultural families and interactions between family members influence adolescents. The aim of the current study was to examine structural relationships among Southeast Asian mothers' and Korean fathers' bilingual socialization, adolescents' attitude toward mothers' native culture, and mother-adolescent relationship satisfaction. Specifically, the following two questions were addressed in this study: 1) Does bilingual socialization of each parent affect adolescents' attitude toward mothers' native culture? 2) Does children's attitude toward mothers' native culture affect mother-adolescent relationship satisfaction? To answer these questions, the survey data from the '2012 Nationwide Survey of Multicultural Families' was analysed, using SEM. The sample consisted of 318 multicultural adolescents (aged 9-17) living with Korean fathers and immigrant mothers from Southeast Asia. The main findings were as follows. First, Korean fathers' bilingual socialization had a positive effect on immigrant mothers' bilingual socialization. The path from Korean fathers' bilingual socialization to adolescents' attitude toward mothers' native culture was significantly mediated by immigrant mothers' bilingual socialization. Second, adolescents' attitude toward mothers' native culture had a positive effect on mother-adolescent relationship satisfaction. Results suggest that Korean fathers' bilingual socialization is an important factor for bilingual socialization of multicultural adolescents. It is also worth noting that each parent's bilingual socialization helps multicultural adolescents to form a positive identity as a member of multicultural families.
Purpose: This study investigates the influence of education satisfaction, communication competence, and group cohesion on organizational socialization in nursing students. Method: The subjects were 175 third year nursing students. Data were collected from June 3 to 14, 2013 through a self-reporting questionnaire. Data analysis was performed by multiple regression using the SPSSWIN 21.0 program. Results: The organizational socialization score of nursing students averaged 3.79 points (5 Likert scale). Practice education satisfaction, communication competence and group cohesion of nursing students influenced organizational socialization ($R^2$ 52.5%, F=49.051, p<.001). Conclusion: For nursing students, practice education satisfaction, communication competence and group cohesion are significant variables for organizational socialization. Thus, in order to enhance the organizational socialization of nursing students, there is a need to develop a differentiated practicum curriculum that considers nursing student demands in collaboration with nursing faculty and administrators on the basis of education programs, including concepts of communication competence and group cohesion.
Purpose: This study aimed to examine the effects of self expression and perceptional justice on the organizational socialization of nurses. Methods: Participants were 188 nurses in 3 regions at 4 different general hospitals with 400 beds each. Data were collected using self-report questionnaires from August 15 to September 15, 2012. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test, one-way ANOVA, Pearson correlations, and multiple regression using SPSS 18.0. Results: Organizational socialization was positively correlated with self-expression and perception of justice. The significant predictors of organizational socialization of nurses were Perception of justice, self-expression, marital status, department of work, and hospital size. These variables explained 41% of the variance in organizational socialization of nurses. Conclusion: These results suggest that organizational socialization of nurses could be enhanced by increasing self-expression and perception of justice.
Purpose: To exam image of nurses and factors on professional socialization of nursing students. Method: A descriptive study was performed and data was analysed with SPSS-PC Win(version 11.0). Image of nurses was measured by traditional-personal image and professional-social image(20 items, 5-Likert). Professional socialization was measured by revised Professional Socialization Scale(52 items, 5-Likert). A total of 135 students were participated. Result: Professional-social image showed stronger effect rather than traditional-personal image on Professional socialization. Commitment and Decision making were potent factors on traditional-personal image, and Commitment, Maturity, Independence and Decision making were statistically significant to explain professional-social image. Factors influenced positively professional socialization were job satisfaction and professional-social image. Conclusion: The results of this study suggest that focus of nursing education have to shift in values and personality traits to professional-oriented value system. Results indicate the importance of encouraging professional socialization and cultivation of positive, personal self-esteem for nursing students through establishing nursing identity. Also, clinical role model was trained effectively.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the impact of workplace bullying experience and resilience on the organizational socialization among new graduate nurses. Methods: This is a descriptive correlational study with 148 new graduate nurses working in the hospitals in B city of Korea. The instruments that were used for measuring main variables were the negative acts questionnaire-revised (NAQ-R), the Korean version of the Connor-Davidson resilience scale (CD-RISC), and the measurement tool for new nurses' organizational socialization. Results: The prevalence of workplace bullying was 22.3%, and the subjects reported moderate level of resilience. Significant negative correlations between workplace bullying and resilience, and organizational socialization were found. A significant positive correlation was found between resilience and organizational socialization. As a result of multiple regression analysis, resilience, workplace bullying, and a working in desired unit turned out to be variables that explained new graduate nurses' organizational socialization (adjusted $R^2=.514$, p<.001). Conclusion: The results of this study suggested that new graduate nurses with higher resilience and less experience of workplace bullying would show higher organizational socialization. Further research is needed to identify the regulation effect of resilience in between workplace bullying and organizational socialization.
