A Study on Social Distance of Nursing Students toward Minority Groups in a Metropolitan City (일 도시 간호대학생의 소수집단에 대한 사회적 거리감)

  • Purpose: To survey the social distance of nursing students toward minority groups (immigrants, foreign workers, Saeteomins, and foreign students) and compare them according to general and multicultural characteristics. Methods: The subjects were 409 students from two nursing schools at G metropolitan city. Data were collected with self-reported questionnaires from April 2012 to June 2012, and analyzed by descriptive statistics (t-test, analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Scheffe test) using the SPSS/WIN 17.0 program. Results: The mean scores of social distance were $1.90{\pm}0.57$ (out of 4 points) and scores significantly differed according to religion (t=3.095, p=.002), tourist experiences in foreign countries (t=-2.651, p=.008), and for Asian background of minority groups. There were also differences according to the number of foreign friends(F=4.924, p=.008) and duration of friendships(F=3.913, p=.021). Conclusion: The level of social distance of nursing students was lower than average but needs to be reduced. We suggest further studies on the social distance toward each minority group and the development of valid scales for social distance and its related variables.

Minority Protect Policies and Social Enterprises : Focusing on North Korean Defectors (소수자 보호정책과 사회적기업 : 북한이탈주민을 중심으로)

  • This study made fundamental approaches on the significance of social enterprises on minority protection policies. In particular, it offered discussions focused on the relationship between social enterprises and North Korean defectors which greatly affect minority policies. Study results can be summed up as follows. First, the greatest difficulties for North Korean defectors in their adjustment to Korean society are economic activities and a sense of social differences and social enterprises are a policy which can resolve these problems in the most effective way. Second, existing social enterprises were excessively run by the central government and they were support models which lacked creativity and development. To resolve such problems, a lesson was learned that these must change into policy models with local coproduction. Third, a lesson was learned that social enterprises offer more than simple economic activity, offering the proper functions of society, culture, living, and language, and thus the participation of North Korean defectors in social enterprises should be made mandatory in certain sectors. Such research results will contribute to theoretically explaining the relationship between North Korean defectors and social enterprises as minority policies.

Factors Affecting the Social Distance between Minority Groups and Nursing Cadets (국군간호사관생도의 소수집단에 대한 사회적 거리감에 영향을 미치는 요인)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify factors affecting the social distance between minority groups and nursing cadets. Methods: A cross-sectional survey design was used. A questionnaire was distributed to the entire Armed Forces Nursing Academy cadets. Data from 273 nursing cadets were analyzed using t-test, ANOVA, Pearson correlation coefficients and Stepwise multiple regression. Results: Social distance had positive correlations with collective identity (r=.28) and multiculturalism (r=.37). A negative correlation was found between social distance and perceived threat (r=-.38). Perceived threat, multiculturalism, collective identity, and frequency of contact with minorities were identified as factors affecting the social distance. The model explained 24% of the variables. Conclusion: To effectively respond to the minority groups' nursing needs in the army, educational programs which help to reduce the perceived threat, to strengthen multiculturalism, and to establish a healthy collective identity of nursing cadets need to be developed.

  • Ethnic tourism is utilized by many countries to improve the economic status. Ethnic tourism in Xishuangbanna started from the 1980s and grew rapidly during the past 2 decades. Although many researchers had stressed economic and socio-cultural impacts of ethnic tourism on ethnic minority people, little was done to identify their subjectivities. This research revealed the social and economic benefits from ethnic tourism, representing the identity of ethnic minority people. This research investigated the ethnic groups' subjectivities toward ethnic tourism and identity in Xishuangbanna, Yunnan, China, using the Q-methodology. It was found that the community residents did not get much benefits regardless of the social welfare that ethnic tourism had brought about. Finally, this research also made several implications with regard to tourism management.

Impact of Vocational Training on Wages of Ethnic Minority Labors in Vietnam

  • This research investigates the impact of vocational training on wages of ethnic minority labors in emerging countries; Vietnam is the case study. The study uses secondary data from 2014 to 2018 collected through Vietnam Household Living Standards Surveys (VHLSS) conducted by the General Statistics Office. In order to analyze the impact of vocational training on wages of ethnic minority areas in Vietnam, this research creates ethnic area variables. According to Vietnamese regulations, ethnic areas are communes of 51 different provinces, inhabited by ethnic minority people. The statistics from VHLSS in 2018, show that the proportion of labors of working age with a certificate was 22.5%. The research employs Heckman Sample Selection Model to estimate the impact of vocation training on wage of labors in ethnic minority areas. The results show that vocational training plays a crucial role in improving the wages of ethnic minorities and has a positive impact. However, apart from the achieved outcomes, vocational training and job creation for ethnic minorities are not without limitations and shortcomings. Based on the findings, some recommendations to ethnic minority labors, enterprises and the Government are proposed to encourage participation in vocational training for the purpose of promoting the efficiency of the labor market.

The Mental Health of Ethnic Minority Youths in South Korea and Its Related Environmental Factors: A Literature Review

  • Objectives: With increasing concerns for the rapidly growing minority population in South Korea, this literature review addressed a range of mental health risks among multiethnic youths (MY) in South Korea by 1) comparing mental health outcomes with those of native-born youths and 2) identifying multiple layers of relevant environmental factors, from family and school relationships to culture. Methods: We reviewed 54 studies that fulfilled specific inclusion criteria. Results: Multiple common risk/protective factors, including family separation, family relationship quality, parental socioeconomic and mental health status, social relationships at school, and cultural acceptance, were noted. Conclusion: In general, empirical evidence indicates that minority youths have relatively heightened risks for emotional and behavioral problems. Future studies must elucidate the complex interplay between multiple risk and protective factors and the long-term adaptation and mental health service utilization of MY.

A Study on the Korea Welfare Programs for the Social Minority : Focusing on the Welfare Programs by Regions (사회적 약자를 위한 복지 프로그램에 대한 분석: 지역별 프로그램들을 중심으로)

  • The aim of this study is to analyze the domestic and international trends and cases of welfare programs for the social minority to provide implications for policy development. This study examined the trends of Community Care in the UK and Local Governance in Japan as overseas policy trends. In addition, along with the trend of welfare programs provided for the social minority in each region in Korea, as a domestic cases, case of Bucheon city as a case of gender policy, Daejeon city as a case of palate policy for the disabled, and Seongdong-gu, Seoul as a case of policy for children are analyzed. As implications obtained through this analysis, it was suggested that at the regional level, the demand survey appropriate to the situation of the region and the connection with the cooperative entities in various regions are important.

Current Status and Agenda for Regional Central Library Social Minority Service (국내 지역대표도서관 소수자서비스의 현황과 과제)

  • The purpose of this study is to derive and propose agenda to improve the quality of minority services provided by regional cental libraries at the present time when information gap is deepening. First, text mining and topic modeling were conducted on 144 studies in the field of library and information science that dealt with minorities, and the discussions surrounding minorities in the domestic library world were examined in detail. Next, the current status of services for minorities in Regional central libraries were examined in detail, and tasks requiring discussion were sought in planning and operation of services for minorities in Regional central libraries. To this end, interviews were conducted with practitioners, in charge of services for minorities at Regional central libraries. Specifically, 1) awareness of minorities by practitioners, 2) current status of minority services, and 3) responsibility and role of Regional central libraries for planning and operating minority services and necessary support were analyzed. Based on the analysis results, the following tasks were derived. 1) Recategorization of minority groups, 2) Establishment of reference resource, 3) Reinforcement of education, and 4) Cooperation support between regional representative libraries and local public libraries were derived and suggested.

The Trend and Prospect of Study on 'Sexual Minority' in Social Welfare and Practice : Implications of Feminist Theories on Sexuality (사회복지(학)에서의 '성적 소수자' 연구의 동향과 인식론적 전망 : 페미니스트 섹슈얼리티 이론의 가능성)

  • The main purpose of this study is to critically examine the existing theoretical as well as analytical scope of 'sexual minority' in Social Welfare, and to (re)construct and expand it incorporating feminist theories on sexuality. The body of literature on sexual minority or homosexuality in social welfare in Korea as well as in the West can be characterized as two distinct features: first, medical discourse leaning on pathological perspective which perceives homosexuality as a disease or defect, homosexual as a pervert; and second, human rights perspective premised upon the idea of diversity and multi-culturalism, both which are anchoring at 'essentialism.' Based upon the understanding of sexuality as a social construct, we argue that feminist insight on sexuality can lead to reconceptualizing homosexuality and reorienting theories and practices in social welfare. From radical feminism to postmodern queer theories, feminists have developed diverse ideas and complex theories on sexuality and homosexuality, including the concept of 'compulsory heterosexuality,' 'lesbianism as political resistance,' and 'performative gender.' For feminists, particularly, sexuality which is constructed in the complex power matrix of dominations to producing and maintaining inequalities and discriminations is not merely a distinctive variable, but one of the important organizational principles such as gender, class, race, age, and nationality. This epistemological principle will hopefully shed lights on alternative 'knowledge' on homosexuality in social welfare, and lead to significant contribution to its critical expansion in theory and practice.

How Does The Capital Market Respond To Diversity Management? Lessons From The U.S. Firms' Valuation With Respect To Their LGBT Policies (자본시장은 기업의 다양성 성과에 어떻게 반응하는가? 미국 기업 의 소수 성정체성 옹호 정책에 대한 자본시장의 기업가치 평가 간의 관계를 중심으로)

  • Purpose - This study starts with the question of whether the capital market is likely to give positive valuations to companies that pursue diversity in their management and corporate governance structure. In this study, minority gender identity is considered as a diversity issue in management that has a socially negative perception. Design/methodology/approach - This study analyzed the relationship between corporate value in the capital market and the policies of companies that advocated minority gender identities, based on listed U.S. company data. Findings - This study finds that companies that support minority gender identities had a lower Tobin's q value than companies that did not. However, in the case of authenticity in terms of corporate governance diversity, the study finds that companies that advocate minority gender identities rather receive high firm valuation. In particular, companies with a high percentage of female directors show high corporate value even when implementing policies that support minority gender identities. Research implications or Originality - This study explores the capital market's response to diversity using past data in the U.S., but provides more practical implications for how companies should respond to a situation where an advocacy policy, based on more social recognition, for LGBT groups is established in Korea.
