  • Social capital is an important resource for Korean immigrant children's successful school life in the U.S. because most immigrants are not familiar to new language and culture. However, immigrant parents and their children have limited ability to join and create social networks freely both inside and outside school. We, the researchers of this study, adopted qualitative research method: open-ended in-depth interview, coding and analysis based on grounded theory. The result of this study reveals that Korean immigrant parents utilize their coethnic networks in getting educational information and English plays important role in educational decision-making process of the parents.

  • In this paper, we propose a researcher modeling technique based on ontology and construct social network for researchers using diverse relational properties. User ontology schema is created by extending the existing HR-XML model for a researcher model. User ontology schema and instance are created by OWL. We compose social network model for efficient cooperation between researchers using static relational properties such as educational background and dynamic relational properties such as co-authors and co-workers, etc. Closeness has direction because researcher network is differently configured by the researchers. We define inferencing rules using SWRL and inference ontology rules using racer inference machine to compose direct relationships between researchers. The proposed model for researchers can be applied to the cooperation model for researchers by retrieving common expert group dynamically.

  • Marketing channels have been characterized as social systems by the recent channel literatures. Under this assumption, many channel behavioral theories were developed by examining hypothetical relationships among several channel variables. Among them, interrelationship of channel cooperation with other variables has been one of major concerns to channel managers. From this point of view, the objective of this paper is to examine the role of cooperation in the franchise system of garments goods. In order to achieve our goal, data was collected from garment retailers and a simple random sample of 150 dealers was drawn and tested. Major findings through the data analysis are as follows : 1. Higher levels of dependence lead to higher levels of cooperation. 2. Noncoercive sources of power tends to increase intrachannel cooperation. However, the hypothesis that higher levels of coercive sources of power will lead to lower levels of cooperation was not statistically supported. 3. Another hypothesis that higher levels of conflict will lead to lower levels of cooperation was partially supported. 4. Higher levels of cooperation lead to higher levels of cooperation. In this study, data was gathered from the retail side of the franchise channel dyad for garments goods. Therefore, future research are suggested to investigate respondents of both sides(franchiser and franchisee) of the channel dyad.

But it is true that profits from the outcome of patents resulting from such cooperation, such as technology transfer and royalty fees, are lower than they are supposed to be, because of excessive patents applications, although some of them have little commercial potential. Therefore, this research aims to suggest a way to analyze and recognize patents, which enable efficient industry-university cooperation and technology transfer. For the analysis, data on 1,061 patents was collected from 4 different universities. With the data, a quality-strategy matrix was arranged targeting the industry-university cooperation foundations', US patents owned by universities, text mining, and social network analysis were carried out, particularly focusing on the patents in the advanced quality technology section of the matrix. Then core key words and IPC codes were obtained and key patents were analyzed by universities. As a result of the analysis, it was found that 4 key patents, 2 key IPC codes were drawn for University H, 4 key patents, 2 key IPC codes for University K, 6 key patents, 1 key IPC code for University Y, 14 key patents, and 2 key IPC codes for University S. This research is expected to have a great significance in contributing to the invigoration of industry-university cooperation based on the analysis result on patents and IPC codes, which enable efficient industry-university cooperation and technology transfer.
