PURPOSES : This study is to investigate the countermeasures against heavy snow on road in Seoul: Focusing on Seocho 1-dong. METHODS : Since 2000, three cases of the top 10 in the highest snow fall depth in a day occurred in 2001(234mm, 156mm) and 2010(258mm) and the possibility of heavy snow is getting higher. 10 days after heavy snow fall when the snow thaws, socio-economic damages occurred often. For example, the insufficient snow removing, difficulty in patients transfer, crash accidents, injuries from a fall, the increasing cost of snow removing etc. RESULTS : For the effective deploying snow removing equipment and workers, it is necessary to understand emergency snow removing spots. Seocho 1-dong was tested because it contains mountains, hill and urban areas as well as various buildings and road types exposures. CONCLUSIONS : Based on the domestic and international heavy snow researches, the elements for vulnerability were analyzed and vulnerable areas to snow fall were derived.

This study was attempted to provide some fundamental data for safety structrural design of biological production facility. Wind load and snow load, acting on agricultural structures is working more sensitive than any other load. Therefore, wind speed and snow depth according to return periods for design load estimation were calculated by frequency analysis using the weather data(maximum instantaneous wind speed, maximum wind speed, maximum depth of snow cover and fall) of 68 regions in Korea. Equations for estimating maximum instantaneous wind speed with maximum wind speed were developed for all, inland and seaside regions. The results were about the same as the current eqution in general. Design wind speed and snow depth according to return periods were calculated and Local design wind load and snow load depending on return periods were presented together with iso-wind speed and iso-snow depth maps. The calculated design snow depth by maximum depth of snow cover were higher than design snow depth by maximum depth of snow fall. Considering wind speed and snow depth, protected cultivation is very difficult in Ullungdo, Gangwon seaside and contiguity inland regions, and strong structural design is needed in the west-south seaside against wind speed, and structure design of biological production facility in these regions need special consideration.
Wind load or snow load, acting on agricultural structures is working more sensitive than any other load and therefore plays an important role in determination of design loads of agricultural structures. In this study, unit snow weight, greatest gust speed and depth of snow fall were analyzed and applied to determine the amount of frames. The unit snow weights were statistically classified and calculated in the basis of mean temperature and showed considerable differences between the unit snow weights at below and above -1$^{\circ}C$. Equations for estimating greatest gust speed with fastest wind speed were developed for inland and seaside districts. The calculated values from developed equations were little higher than those from the current equation in general. The difference between the depths of snow cover and snow fall, which shows the possibility of reduction of design loads under the adequate management. Design wind speed estimated by a modified equation suggested the amount of frames less than those by current one, and the depth of snow fall as a design snow depth suggested the amount of frames more than those of snow cover. Therefore, it is very important to select the adequate design values considering the characteristics of agricultural structures.
When trains run over a snow-covered track at high speed, the snow accereted under car bodies may drop during train running. The dropped snow/ice lumps scatter the ballast on the track damaging the car body and the environment along the track in snowy regions. In this study, the snow-fall condition in winter around the Seoul-Busan high-speed line has been investigated to yield the countermeasure for the high-speed line. The climate near Japanese and French high-speed line as well as the relationship between the climate and countermeasure has also been investigated and the direction of countermeasure for Seoul-Busan high-speed line has been deduced. Consequently, the amount and frequency of snow-fall near Seoul-Busan high-speed line is less than that of Japan and France, so the speed restriction could be the fundamental countermeasure for Seoul-Busan high-speed line, and additional measure on rolling stock and infrastructure should be followed.
Commercial formulation of fungicides was studied in the golf course for evaluation against Typhula incarnata causal agents of gray snow mold. Efficacies of fungicides application, fungicide mixture, fungicides applied method (irrigation and spray) and fungicides applied time (early fall and late fall) were evaluated for their influence on the chemical control of gray snow mold of turfgrass during the winter season in Yongpyeong golf course, Korea. Unsprayed control has significantly more disease severity than three fungicides (azoxystrobin, propiconazole, and tebuconazole) were applied to field plots. Effect of three fungicides was over 80% with control value for controlling gray snow mold on Kentucky bluegrass and creeping bentgrass species. Effect of fungicide mixture with different family groups had an over 93% control value of gray snow mold on Kentucky bluegrass species. It was not significantly difference in fungicidal effect according to applied method (irrigation and spray) with azoxystrobin on Kentucky bluegrass and creeping bentrasss species. Effect of fungicides applied time was a significantly difference on disease control by tebconazole early fall spray.
Objective: The purpose of this study is to design a snow-removing tool using an ergonomic approach. Background: It is necessary to remove snow on the garden of a house or side street to prevent a fall hazard. When a user removes snow using a snow-removing tool, he or she experiences lots of physical discomfort. Therefore it is necessary to design a snow-removing tool to reduce a user's physical discomfort. Method: In this study, a new design for a snow-removing tool was developed considering user needs. The design prototype was compared with an existing tool through electromyography and subjective evaluation. Results: From the comparison evaluation, significant differences between the new design and the existing tool were identified in both muscle fatigue and subjective rating of discomfort. Conclusion: The result showed that the new design is better from the aspect of easing physical discomfort. Application: A new snow-removing tool can be developed using the design so that it can reduce a user's physical discomfort.
This study was designed to investigate the effect of the late fall fertilization applied with methyl urea(MU), compound chemical fertilizer(CF), humate(HM), and organic compost fertilizer(NS) on spring greenup of creeping bentgrass at following year. The plots were treated with various snow cover periods before transforming to ski slopes from golf holes during 2007 fall to 2008 spring. The highest visual quality and greenup rate were shown on MU or HM applications at 10 days before snow cover treatment. The CF treatment which had a highest phosphorus rate was most effective with a 13 cm of root length at the reconversion date to golf hole from ski slope of the following spring. However, the application of CF followed by immediate snow cover showed the worst results on visual quality and green color caused by a leaf burning damage from the residual effect of CF. At least 10 days were required to avoid phytotoxicant from undissolved granular of CF before snow cover practise. The application of NS showed the highest result on leaf dry weight at no snow cover plot in next spring, but not on green color and visual quality. Therefore, the proper interval period of snow cover after late fall fertilization should be an important management skill on the spring greenup of creeping bentgrass on following year transforming from ski slope to golf hole.
We need water equivalent unit data of snowfall for the purpose of forecast and hydrology related research area. This study developed new method of automatic recording snowfall as weight unit with circle type plate using stain-gauge loadcell. Field test of instrument carried out at Daegwallyeong Obs. Station from 20 to 23 Jan. 2008 during heavy snowfall. There is 74.2cm snow depth and 54.6mm precipitation by Daegwallyeong Obs. Station. But the instrument of this study recorded 71.0mm of precipitation amount. Because of different observation method can cause more 15.4mm than Daegwallyeong Obs. Station. But this study gives the possibility of observation of new snow fall measurement under freezing conditions of snow. From the observation data the density of snowfall calculated from 0.09 to $1015g/cm_3$ from the observation period. And have a good relations between manual observation and automatic observation data from this study instrument with slope of 1.35 to 1.39.

The snow brings affluence if it is dealt with appropriately. but causes huge damages if it is dealt with improperly when it snows heavily. Following with the development of road transportation, tile snow causes damages by becoming a serious obstacle for traffic, increasing traffic accidents, causing damages to the road, and requiring a lot of snow removal expense. As farming in the winter becomes flourishing, damages to agricultural facilities and farm produces caused by the snow become bigger and bigger. Now in our country, heavy snow or heavy rain is likely to fall at anywhere and at any time without restricted to a particular area. Safety first is one way of practicing human respect. Disasters will disappear from our neighborhood if we adopt prevention measures and follow them thoroughly. And also this is the shortcut to achieve a welfare society.

When we research a landscape or make a Landscape Impact Assessment, we use the image of a specific season like summer or fall. Since there are four distinct seasons, each with a different landscape, researchers need to understand viewers′visual preferences for individual seasonal landscapes. The purpose of this study is to investigate viewers′visual preferences according to seasonal change and the respondent′s age, gender and profession. In this research, the independent variable is season: suing, summer, fall, winter and snowy winter. Three landscape types used in the experiment: forest, street and agriculture. Each landscape type has two sites for reliability. The assessment media for this research are pictures featuring landscapes taken in each of the four seasons. The study used the "paired comparison" method for taking the score of visual preference. The results of this study are as follows: 1. The summer landscape has the highest visual preference score. However, spring and fall landscapes should also be considered for visual landscape evaluation. 2. The visual preference of winter landscape covered with snow is very high, but since snow is temporal and irregular, it is difficult to consider this factor for visual landscape evaluation. 3. The visual preference score of winter is the lowest of four seasons. The attractive factors of spring are flowers, summer is greenery and fall is autumnal tints. But these are not present in winter. 4. The result of visual preferences according to age groups, gender and profession have no serious differences. 5. Visual preference to scenery of 4 seasons by age group was not different from general preference and thus was concluded to have no connection with age. 6. As a result from the research of visual preference to scenery of 4 seasons by sex, women were shown to like snow-scene more than men. This study presents an indication of general preferences of seasonal landscapes. It is expected that more advanced study will proceed after this one.
