  • Hanji is a traditional Korean handmade paper, made of bast fibers of the paper mulberry. Its fiber furnish is much more expensive than wood fiber furnish. Hanji with a low basis weight requires additional opacity and smoothness for better writing and printing. Filler such as calcium carbonate can not be used to raise the opacity of Hanji because of its low retention in low basis weight paper and the high freeness of the Hanji fiber furnish. Addition of red algae pulp, which is prepared from marine red algae to the Hanji fiber furnish negated retention problems happening in the case of mineral filler addition, and produced a substantial improvement in the opacity and smoothness of Hanji. The higher retention was due to the much larger size of the red algae fibers compared to the mineral fillers. The improvement in opacity and smoothness were also due to the shape of the red algae fibers: that red algae fibers are narrower in widths and shorter in lengths than wood fibers results in increased surface area and smoothness.

  • To improve mean-life and reliability of power cable in this paper, we have investigated stress-strain and smoothness showing by changing the content of carbon black that is semiconductive additives for underground power transmission. Specimens were made of sheet form with the three of existing resins and the nine of specimens for measurement. Stress-strain of specimens was measured by TENSOMETER 2000. A speed of measurement was 200[mm/min], ranges of stress and strain were $400(Kgf/cm^2)$ and 600[%]. In addition tests of stress-strain were progressed by aging specimens at air oven. Finally we wished to look for protrusion of specimens by using smoothness tester. According to increasing the content of carbon black from this experimental result, yield stress was increased, while strain was decreased. And stress-strain were decreased some after aging because of oxidation reaction of chemical defect. Lastly surface of specimens smoothed generally.

  • High dimensionality and highly correlated features are the major characteristics of hyperspectral data. Linear projections such as LDA and its variants have been used in extracting low-dimensional features from high-dimensional spectral data. Regularization of LDA has been introduced to alleviate the overfitting that often occurs in a small-sized training data set and leads to poor generalization performance. Among them, a smoothness regularized LDA seems to be effective in the feature extraction for hyperspectral data due to its capability of utilizing the high correlatedness. This paper studies the performance of the regularized LDA in hyperspectral data classification experimentally with varying conditions of the training data. In addition, a new dual smoothness regularized LDA is proposed and evaluated that makes use of both the spectral-domain and spatial-domain correlations between neighboring pixels.

  • It is well-known that the smoothness of 4-point interpolatory Deslauriers-Dubuc(DD) subdivision scheme is $C^{1}$. N. Dyn[3] proved that 4-point interpolatory subdivision scheme is $C^{1}$ by means of eigenanalysis. In this paper we take advantage of Laurent polynomial method to get the same result, and give new way of strict proof on Laurent polynomial method.

  • When balancing mixed model assembly lines (MMALs), workload smoothness should be considered on the model-by-model basis as well as on the station-by-station basis. This is because although station-by-station assignments may provide the equality of workload to workers, it causes the utilization of assembly lines to be inefficient due to the model sequences. This paper presents a genetic algorithm to improve the workload smoothness on both the station-by-station and the model-by-model basis in balancing MMALs. Proposed is a function by which the two kinds of workloads smoothness can be evaluated according to the various preferences of line managers. To enhance the capability of searching good solutions, our genetic algorithm puts emphasis on the utilization of problem-specific information and heuristics in the design of representation scheme and genetic operators. Experimental results show that our algorithm can provide better solutions than existing heuristics. In particular, our algorithm is outstanding on the problems with a larger number of stations or a larger number of tasks.

  • The need for smoothness measures emerged by mathematicians working in the fields of approximation theory, functional analysis and real analysis. In the present paper, a new version of generalized modulus of smoothness is studied. The aim of defining that modulus, is to find the degree of best Lp functions approximation via trigonometric polynomials. We benefit from Jackson integrals to arrive to the essential approximation theorems.

  • This paper analyzes performance of major obstacle avoidance methods. For the analysis, numerical performance indexes are proposed: motion distance to goal point, motion time, distance to obstacles, and smoothness of the motion. Especially, the index of smoothness measures efficiency of the motion using the angular acceleration and jerk of the robot heading. Four major obstacle avoidance methods are compared in terms of the performance indexes. The four methods are artificial potential field(APF) method, elastic force(EF) method, APF with virtual distance, and EF with virtual distance. Through simulation, the four methods are compared and features of the methods are explored.

  • To measure modulus, damping properties and smoothness of semiconducting materials in power cable, we have investigated those of semiconducting materials showed by changing the content of carbon black. Then they were produced as sheets after pressing for 20 minutes at 180[$^{\circ}C$] with a pressure of 200[kg/cm$^{2}$]. The content of conductive carbon black was the variable, and their contents were 20, 30 and 40[wt$\%$], respectively. The modulus and tans were measured by DMA 2980. The ranges of measurement temperature were from -50[$^{\circ}C$] to 100[$^{\circ}C$] and measurement frequency was 1[Hz3. The modulus of specimens was increased according to a increment of a carbon black content. And modulus was rapidly decreased at the glass transition temperature. The tans of specimens was decreased according to a increment of a carbon black content. The smoothness was measured by JSM-6400. EEA resin from SEM measurement was best the dispersion of carbon back in base resin.
