Physicochemical Properties of Organo­Smectites Modified by HDTMA, BDTDA, and CP (HDTMA­, BDTDA­ 및 CP­스멕타이트의 물리­화학적 특성)

  • This study aims to provide the physicochemical properties of three kinds of organo­smectites which can be diversely used in industries. Some properties of them were compared with Na­smectite. Three kinds of organo­smectites such as Hexadecyltrimethylammonium(HDTMA), Benzyldimethyltetradecylammonium(BDTDA), and Cetylpyridinium(CP) exchanged smectites were manufactured for this study. Three types of organo­smectites showed the alkaline character(pH 9), very low swelling property and viscosity, and a fast flocculation behavior because of strong hydrophobic property in contrast to hydrophilic Na­smectite. Three organo­smectites showed the strong interlayer expansion with basal spacing from $19\AA$ to $23\AA$ compared with the Na­smectite of about 12 $\AA$. Organic cations such as HDTMA, BDTDA, and CP exchanged into smectite were completely decomposed in the temperature range from $250^{\circ}C$ to $400^{\circ}C$. Generally, three organo­smectites showed the similar mineralogical, physicochemical and thermal properties. But their properties are quite different from Na­smectite. Considering economically, CP exchanged smectite would be used for the diverse utilization field in the future time.

  • XRD patterns of biedellite-nontronite and saponite-iron saponite series were investigated using one-dimensional pattern simulation method. Ethylene-glycolate smectites show stronger 002 and 003 reflections than hydrated specimens do. The intensities of the 002 and 003 reflections change systematically as a function of Fe enrichment in both types of smectites. The intensity ratio of 002/003 increases with increasing. Fe in both dioctahedral to the higher scattering factor of Fe than those of Al and Mg, and the scattering power of various smectites can be compared quantitatively by calculating the scattering factors of octahedral cations. Interlayer cations cause less effect on XRD profile than octahedral cations as Fe do. Although 001 reflections provide informations about the overall scattering power of the octahedral sheet, some ferrous dioctahedtal smectite cannot be distinguished unambiguously from trioctahedral smectites on the basis of XRD profile. Simulation showed that heterogeneous smectites exhibit 001 intensity distribution that is almost identical to that of homogeneous smectites having the average composition of heterogeneous ones. The broadening of 001 reflections may not be useful in evaluating the degree of heterogeneity of smectite unless other factors affecting the broadening are well known.

  • The fate and the behavior of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and heavy metals in the environment are mainly controlled by their interactions with various components of soils and sediments. Due to their large surface area and abundance in many soils, smectites may greatly influence the fate and transport of the contaminants in the environment. In our experiment, PAH sorption by hexadecyltrimethylammonium (HDTMA)-modified smectite linearly increased in proportion to the amount of HDTMA added on the clay. However, trimethylammonium (TMA)-modified smectite did not show superiority in its sorption of PAH compared with the HDTMA-smectite or dodecyltrimethylammonium (DTMA)-smectite. Meanwhile, the smectites modified with the same cationic surfactants adsorbed Cd$^{2+}$ (heavy metal) significantly from water at low surfactant loading level, but the Cd$^{2+}$ adsorption linearly decreased as the loading of surfactant increased. The result shows that the sorption tendency of organoclays for organic or inorganic contaminants was significantly influenced by the amount and size of the surfactants added on the clay. It means that the stabilization and configuration of cationic surfactant formed on the clay interlayer according to the loading amount of each surfactant of different sizes may be an important factor in effectively sorbing environmental pollutants.nts.

Mineralogy and Genesis of Bentonites from the Tertiary Formations in Geumgwangdong Area, Korea (제(第)3기층(紀層)에 부존(賦存)하는 점토광물(粘土鑛物)에 대(對)한 광물학적(鑛物學的) 및 성인적(成因的) 연구(硏究))

  • Bentonites from the Janggi Group of the Lower Miocene age from the Geumgwangdong area, Korea, have been studied for mineralogical and genetic characterization. The Janggi Group is subdivided, in ascending order, into the Janggi Conglomerate, the Nuldaeri Tuff, the Geumgwangdong Shale, the Lower Coal-bearing Formation, the Basaltic Tuff, and the Upper Coalbearing Formation. Bentonites occur as thin or thick beds in all sedimentary units of the Janggi Group, except for the Janggi Conglomerate. Significant bentonite deposits are found in the Nuldaeri Tuff, the Lower Coal-bearing Formation and the Basaltic Tuff. Bentonites consist mainly of smectite (mainly montmorillonite), with minor quartz, cristobalite, opal-CT and feldspar. Occasionally, kaolinite, clinoptilolite or gypsum is associated with bentonites. Bentonites were studied by the methods of petrographic microscopy, X-ray diffraction, thermal analysis (DT A and TG), infrared absorption spectroscopic analysis, SEM, intercalation reaction, and chemical analysis. Smectites commonly occur as irregular boxwork-like masses with characteristic curled thin edges, but occasionally as smoothly curved to nearly flat thin flakes. Most of smectites have layer charge of 0.25-0.42, indicating typical montmorillonite. Crystal-chemical relations suggest that Fe is the dominant substituent for Al in the octahedral layer and there are generally no significant substituents for Si in the tetrahedral layer. Ca is the dominant interlayer cation in montmorillonite. Therefore, montmorillonite from the study area is dioctahedral Ca-montmorillonite. Occurrence and fabrics of bentonites suggest that smectites as well as cristobalite, opal-CT and zeolites have been formed diagenetically from tuffaceous materials. The precursor of smectites is trachytic or basaltic tuff. Smectites derived from the former contain relatively more $Al_2O$ a and less $Fe_2O_3$ than those from the latter.

Thermodynamic Prediction of Groundwater-Rock Interaction Products around Underground Disposal Sites (심부 처분장 주변 지하수-암석 반응 생성물의 열역학적 예측)

  • Thermodynamic prediction of weathering products from primary aquifer minerals around underground disposal sites was investigated. The distribution of solubility quotients for kaolinite-smectite reactions showed the trend of reaching at equilibrium with Ca-, Mg-, and Na-smectite for deep groundwaters in granitic aquifers. The values of $10^{-14.56}$, $10^{-15.73}$, and $10^{-7.76}$ were proposed as equilibrium constants between kaolinite and Ca-, Mg-, and Na-smectite end members, respectively. On stability diagrams, most of deep groundwaters were located at equilibrium boundaries between stability fields of kaolinite and smectites or on stability fields of smectites and illite. Shallow groundwaters in basic rock aquifer were plotted at the same stability areas of deep granitic groundwaters on stability diagrams. The results indicated that the primiary mineralogical composition may be important to predict weathering products in deep aquifers.

Hydrothermal Synthesis of Smectite from Zeolite (제올라이트로부터 스멕타이트 수열 합성에 대한 연구)

  • Smectites were synthesized from Na-P type and Na-A type zeolites by the hydrothermal synthetic method, and their physicochemical properties were studied. The optimal synthetic conditions for producing smectite were $290^{\circ}C$, 72 hr and $75{\sim}100kgf/cm^2$ in autogenous pressure. pHs of initial reaction solutions for the synthesis of smectites from Na-P type and Na-A type zeolite s were pH 6 and pH 10, respectively. The synthetic smectite was confirmed as $12{\AA}$-beidellite by a series of analysis such as X-ray diffraction analysis with random and oriented mounts, ethylene glycol treatment, and Greene-Kelly test, and their several physicochemical properties were studied.

Mineralogical and Physico-chemical Properties of Sludge Produced During Artificial Sand Processing (국내 화강암류를 이용한 일부 인공쇄석사 제조과정에서 발생되는 슬러지의 광물.물리화학적 특성)

  • The consumption of artificially crushed sands exceeds more than 30 percent of the domestic sand supply in South Korea, and its rate is still increasing. For the manufacture of crushed sand granites and granitic gneisses are preferred, fine fractions (i.e. sludge, particles finer than 63 microns) are removed by use of flocculation agents, and its amount occupy about 15 wt%. The sludges consist of quartz, feldspars, micas, chlorite/vermiculite, kaolinites, smectites and occasionally calcite. Among the clay minerals micas are usually predominant, and $14{\AA}$ minerals, kaolinites and smectites are rather scarce. Jurassic granites usually contain more kaolinites and smectites than those of Cretaceous to Tertiary granites, probably due to longer geologic ages. On the other hand, sludge from Precambrian gneiss does not contain kaolinites and smectites. Chemical analyses for the granites and their sludges show rather clear differences in most of major chemical components. Except for $SiO_2,\;Na_2O\;and\;K_2O$, all other components represent rather clear increase. Decrease of $SiO_2$ content is attributed to the relative decrease of quartz in the sludges. And the $Na_2O decrease is caused by a relatively stronger weathering property of albite compared to Ca plagioclase. The $K_2O$ content shows rather small differences throughout the whole samples. The increases of $Al_2O_3$ and other major components resulted from weathering processes and most of colored components are also concentrated in the sludges. Particle size analyses reveal that the sludges are categorized as sandy loams in a sand-silt-clay triangular diagram. The sludge is now classified as industrial waste because of its impermeability, and this result was also confirmed by rather higher hydraulic conductivities. For the environmental problems, and accomplishing effective sand manufacture, more fresh rocks with little weathering products must be chosen.

Layer Charge Characteristics of Smectite from the Pohang Area (포항지역에서 산출되는 스멕타이트의 층전하 특성)

  • The layer charge characteristics of smectites from the Tertiary basins in the Pohang area have been studied in detail using the alkyl-ammonium method. On the basis of layer charges, the smectite in the Pobang area can be classed as normal and high-charge (hc) smectite. The layer charge of the normal smectite averages 0.3, and ranges from 0.25 to 0.38/half unit cell. The hc-smectite collapses on K-saturation to become illite-like material and shows $10{\AA}$-series reflections on X-ray diffraction. The layer charge of the he-smectite ranges from 0.5 to 1. The layer cbarges of the Pohang smectite are in general heterogeneous. The layer charges distribute between 0.21 and 0.45, and the most frequent layer charge is 0.30~0.32. The layer charge and the layer charge distribution do not appear to be related to stratification or basins of occurrence. Thus, the layer charge may not have developed as a result of burial. Rather, it may have developed due to heat and hydrothermal solutions associated with volcanic activities. Volcanic sills and dykes are ubiquitous in the region.
