A photoluminescence (PL) imaging method using a vision camera was employed to inspect InGaN/GaN quantum-well light-emitting diode (LED) epi-wafers. The PL image revealed dark spot defective regions (DSDRs) as well as a spatial map of integrated PL intensity of the epi-wafer. The Shockley-Read-Hall (SRH) nonradiative recombination coefficient increased with the size of the DSDRs. The high nonradiative recombination rates of the DSDRs resulted in degradation of the optical properties of the LED chips fabricated at the defective regions. Abnormal current-voltage characteristics with large forward leakages were also observed for LED chips with DSDRs, which could be due to parallel resistances bypassing the junction and/or tunneling through defects in the active region. It was found that the SRH nonradiative recombination process was dominant in the voltage range where the forward leakage by tunneling was observed. The results indicated that the DSDRs observed by PL imaging of LED epi-wafers were high density SRH nonradiative recombination centers which could affect the optical and electrical properties of the LED chips, and PL imaging can be an inspection method for evaluation of the epi-wafers and estimation of properties of the LED chips before fabrication.
Accurately simulating the wind field of large-scale region, for instant urban areas, the locations of large span bridges, wind farms and so on, is very difficult, due to the complicated terrains or land surfaces. Currently, the regional wind field can be simulated through the combination of observation data and numerical model using observation-nudging in the Weather Research and Forecasting model (WRF). However, the main drawback of original observation-nudging method in WRF is the effects of observation on the surrounding field is fully mathematical express in terms of temporal and spatial, and it ignores the effects of terrain, wind direction and atmospheric circulation, while these are physically unreasonable for the turbulence. For these reasons, a spatial correlation-based observation-nudging method, which can take account the influence of complicated terrain, is proposed in the paper. The validation and comparation results show that proposed method can obtain more reasonable and accurate result than original observation-nudging method. Finally, the discussion of wind field along bridge span obtained from the simulation with spatial correlation-based observation-nudging method was carried out.

Piezoelectric actuators have long been recognised for use in aerospace structures for control of structural shape. This paper looks at active control of the swept shock wave/turbulent boundary layer interaction using smart flap actuators. The actuators are manufactured by bonding piezoelectric material to an inert substrate to control the bleed/suction rate through a plenum chamber. The cavity provides communication of signals across the shock, allowing rapid thickening of the boundary layer approaching the shock, which splits into a series of weaker shocks forming a lambda shock foot, reducing wave drag. Active control allows optimum control of the interaction, as it would be capable of positioning the control region around the original shock position and unimorph tip deflection, hence mass transfer rates. The actuators are modelled using classical composite material mechanics theory, as well as a finite element-modelling program (ANSYS 5.7).
In order to reduce the download around Smart UAV(SUAV) at hovering and transition mode, flow control using synthetic jet has been performed. Many of the complex tilt rotor flow features are captured including wing leading and trailing edge separation, and the large region of separated flow beneath the wing. First, in order to control the trailing edge separation, synthetic jet is located at 30, 95% of flap chord length. The flow control using synthetic jet on flap shows that stall characteristics depending on several mode can be improved through separation vortices resizing. Also, a flap jet and a 0.01c jet which control the separation efficiently are applied at the same time at each test case because controlling the leading edge separation is essential for download reduction. As a result, time averaged download is reduced about 18% comparing with no control case at hovering mode and 48% at transition mode. These research results show that if flow control using leading edge jet and trailing edge jet is used effectively to the SUAV in overall flight mode, flight performance and stability can be improved.
Optimal design of a piezoelectric smart structure is studied for cabin noise control. A cubic shaped acoustic cavity with a flat plate which covers one side is taken as the problem. The sensor signal is returned to the actuator through a negative gain. The acoustic cavity is modeled using the modal approach which represents the pressure fields in the cavity as a sum of mode shapes of the cavity with unknown coefficients. By using orthogonality of the mode shapes of the cavity, finite element equation for the structure with the influence of the acoustic cavity is derived. The objective function is the average pressure at a certain region, so-called silent zone, in the cavity and the design variables are the locations and sizes of the piezoelectirc actuator and sensor. The optimal design is performed at several frequencies and the results show a remarkable noise reduction. To see the robustness of the optimally designed result, the configuration is used to examine the noise reduction at different frequencies. By adjusting the gain at each frequencies, it is possible to reduce the noise in comparison with the result when the actuator is not activated.
The breast cancer susceptibility gene BRCA1 encodes a nuclear protein, which functions as a tumor suppressor and is involved in gene transcription and DNA repair processes. Many families with inherited breast and ovarian cancers have mutations in the BRCA1 gene. However, only a few studies have reported on the mechanism underlying the regulation of BRCA1 expression in humans. In this study, we investigated the transcriptional regulation of BRCA1 in HeLa cells treated with etoposide. We found that three Egr-1-binding sequences (EBSs) were located at -1031, -1005, and -385 within the enhancer region of the BRCA1 gene. Forced expression of Egr-1 stimulated the BRCA1 promoter activity. EMSA data showed that Egr-1 bound directly to the EBS within the BRCA1 gene. Knockdown of Egr-1 through the expression of a small hairpin RNA (shRNA) attenuated etoposide-induced BRCA1 promoter activity. We conclude that Egr-1 targets the BRCA1 gene in HeLa cells exposed to etoposide.
Shock wave reduction in electrorheological(ER) smart structures is studied. ER insert is a composite structure comprising two elastic outer layers between which is sandwiched layer of ER fluid. When a voltage is applied across the outer layers. the shear modulus and the loss factor of the ER fluid are enabled, and thus the dynamic properties of the composite structure is altered. For the shock wave reduction in a hull mount of a submerged structure, ER inserts are made on the hull mount structure. To investigate the ER insert shape. many types of ER insert pattern are considered. Modal test of ER insert structures is performed to obtain the mode shapes, natural frequencies and the acceleration transmissibility. The acceleration transmissibility is reduced at such a frequency region when an electric field is applied. It is observed that the natural frequencies and mode shapes can be tunable by applying electric field. The ER-inserted hull mount is installed in an integrated system and the overall performance of shock wave reduction is tested. The possibility of shock wave reduction in the hull mount is demonstrated.
In island and backcountry areas, electrical power is usually supplied by diesel generators. It is difficult for small scale diesel generators to have an economy of scale owing to the usage of fossil fuels to produce electricity. Also, there is a problem of carbon dioxide emissions that brings some environmental pollution to the entire region of the area. For solving those, this paper proposes a design method of autonomous micro-grid to minimize the fossil fuels of diesel generator, which is composed of diesel generator, wind turbine, battery energy storage system and photovoltaic generation system. The proposed method was verified through computer simulation and micro-grid operation system.
