Recently, IoT technology has been widely used in many industries. Also research on integrating IoT technology with IoT sensors is actively underway. One of the important challenges in IoT is to support low-latency communication. With the development of communication networks and protocols, a variety of protocols are being used, and their performance is improving. In this paper, we compare the performance and analyze the characteristics of some of the major communication protocols in IoT application, namely MQTT, HTTP, and HTTPS. IoT sensors acquired data by connecting an Arduino equipped with ESP8266 and a temperature and humidity sensor (DHT11). The server measured the performance by building servers for each protocol using AWS EC2. We analyzed the packets transmitted between the Arduino and the server during the data transmission. We measured the amount of data and transfer time. The measurement results showed that MQTT had the lowest data transmission time and data amount among the three protocols.
Recently, several research studies on things abstraction framework have been proposed in order to implement the multi-service Internet of Things (IoT) system, where various IoT services share the thing devices. Distributed things abstraction has an IoT service duplication problem, which aggravates power consumption of mobile devices and network traffic. On the other hand, cloud server-centric things abstraction cannot cover real-time interactions due to long network delay. Fog server-centric things abstraction has limits in insufficient IoT interfaces. In this paper, we propose Smart Fog which is a fog server-centric things abstraction framework to resolve the problems of the existing things abstraction frameworks. Smart Fog consists of software modules to operate the Smart Gateway and three interfaces. Smart Fog is implemented based on IoTivity framework and OIC standard. We construct a smart home prototype on an embedded board Odroid-XU3 using Smart Fog. We evaluate the network performance and energy efficiency of Smart Fog. The experimental results indicate that the Smart Fog shows short network latency, which can perform real-time interaction. The results also show that the proposed framework has reduction in the network traffic of 74% and power consumption of 21% in mobile device, compared to distributed things abstraction.
The LED technology advancement introduce cuttingedge technology on Internet of Things (IoT) to connect the physical world to the digital realm, using digital smart lighting infrastructure called Internet of light (IoL). This paper proposes an Integrated IoT agent on networked smart LED lighting controller called IoL Filed Gateway using lighting infrastructure in which a lighting system that can connect to a network and can be monitored and controlled from a centralized system or via the cloud. The IoL Field Gateway defines new world of smart connected intelligence, lighting can become an integral and responsive part of everyday human life environments. The proposed connected lighting gateway uses the concept of multi-hop ad hoc network using visible light communication (VLC) with RF wireless technologies and Wired PLC (Power Line Communication). This connectivity and intelligence integrated into LED-based luminaires form the backbone of smart buildings and cities and make the Internet of Things (IoT) vision feasible and enables the lighting administrator can control numerous lightings easily and visitors can get visual information from the lightings with their smart devices. The proposed IoL gateway design is emulated on Arduino based HW platform with VLC, RF, and PLC connectivity and evaluated with four sensor interface.

Recently, the Internet of Thing (IoT) technology is expanding explosively in the number of devices and applications in many application areas. In IoT systems, sensors and actuators are connected to the Internet and cooperate to do some applications by exchanging information. In this paper an IoT smart home system is developed to monitor and control home devices easily. Our system consists of sensor devices, IoT gateways, and an IoT server. Sensor devices developed using Rfduino sense the physical world and transmit their data using BLE to the IoT server thru the IoT gateway. We implemented the IoT gateway using Raspberry Pi and the IoT server using ARTIK cloud. We installed our system and made a test in our lab, which showed that our system can be installed and managed easily and extended its functionality in an easy way. By taking advantage of the rule mechanism and action messages of ARTIK cloud, we implemented the control of device parameters easily by sending action messages to the ARTIK cloud.

IoT utilized network vitalization between objects are being rapidly established within current IT communication environment. Therefore the worth of smart mirrors is rising for it is a tool to allow online network between objects to be possible in human communication environment. For effective IoT generation's communication, this research intends to evaluate the smart mirror's value for practical uses based on the users' experiences. For the UX evaluation according to the locations where it will be used, Peter Morville's Honeycomb model and Jocob Nielsen's usage evaluation principles were referred to analyze effectiveness of 4 factors, utilization convenience, communication effectiveness, mass interest and space adequateness on households, public places and work places. Hence, we have were led to an objective result through statistical analysis method based on survey. As a result, we have confirmed the smart mirror's positive influence on the users' effective communication in all places. Especially in households, utilization convenience and space adequateness appeared to be high that confirmed sufficient users' need for the home-automation services. In public places, the communication effectiveness and space adequateness ranked high to confirm that the smart mirror utilization is adequate to provide location information. Also, in work places, the mass adequateness was high that we were able to confirm that supply of work place-specific service contents would bring meaningful results to the users. The smart mirrors are the adequate method to provide effective communication in IoT generation with high possibilities in further development.

The smart farm for livestock, in which information and communication technology (ICT) is combined with livestock farm, is mostly based on the cloud computing paradigm. A cloud-based smart livestock farm has disadvantages such as increased response time, burden on cloud resource caused by the increased number of IoT sensors, traffic burden on the network, and lack of failure resilience mechanisms through collaboration with adjacent IoT devices. In this paper, with these problems in mind, we propose an IoT collaboration system based on edge computing. By using the relatively limited computing resources of the edge device to share the cloud's web server function, we aim to reduce the cloud's resources needed and improve response time to user requests. In addition, through the heartbeat-based failure recovery mechanism, IoT device failures were detected and appropriate measures were taken.

This paper presents a smart parking guidance system based on IoT car-stoppers. The car-stopper embedding an IoT sensor module has the advantage of easy installation compared to conventional parking sensors buried in ground. The parking status data are transferred to the IoT gateway by the sequential point-to-point communication between the car-stoppers. The data transferred from the IoT gateway are stored in the web server, and parking spaces can be monitored remotely through the Android app in a smart device. An active/sleep cycle method using a watch dog timer is employed to reduce the power consumption of the battery powered car-stopper. The power consumption of the car-stopper is measured to be 80 and 25 mW at the active and sleep mode, respectively. A configuration of ultra-low-power IoT sensor module is proposed to minimize the power consumption in the sleep mode. The operation of the implemented system has been verified in a real-world parking lot.
Purpose: This research focused on the fact that the Internet platform is integral to IoT products such as Smart home and studied consumer buying decisions when products are sold bundled with internet service. Contrary to the sales strategies of telecommunication companies, some companies sell IoT products alone, for example Google, Kakao, and Naver. In this market situation, the sales strategies of Korean telecommunication companies were analyzed with bundling theory and technology acceptance model, then it was conducted to figure out which sales and distribution strategies could affect consumers' purchase behavior. Research design, data, methodology: Data was collected by149 questionnaires from groups who are familiar with IoT smart home systems, then exploratory factor analysis and regression were used to analyze the research model. Results: The results revealed that the perceived ease of use and the perceived usefulness affect the purchase intention of IoT-based products; however, this effect was not found in the case of bundled products. In other words, it is found that selling and distributing Internet services and IoT products together does not affect consumers' purchases. Conclusion: It is suggested that Korean telecommunications companies' existing sales and distribution strategies for IoT products need to be changed according to its characteristics.
