  • A significant number of renewable energy systems have been connected to the grids as supplement power source. The renewable energy systems require control algorithm to maintain the power-supply reliability and quality. This paper proposes a novel control algorithm for smart Power Conditioning System (PCS) with harmonics and reactive power compensation. The smart PCS is used to feed Photovoltaic (PV) power to utility and compensate harmonics and reactive power at the same time. The experimentation is carried out on the proposed grid-connected PV generation system, and controlled by digital signal processor. The grid-connected PV generation system injects PV energy into the grid and performs as Active Filter (AF) and Static Synchronous Compensator (STATCOM) without additional devices. The experiment results show that the proposed control algorithm is effective for smart PCS with harmonics and reactive power compensation.

  • Smart Grids are intelligent next generating Electric Power System (EPS) that provide environment-friendliness, high-efficiency, and high-trustworthiness by integrating information and communication technology with electric power technology. Smart grids help to supply power more efficiently and safely than past systems by bilaterally exchanging information between the user and power producer. In addition, it alleviates environmental problems by using renewable energy resources. However, smart grids have many cyber security risks because of the bilateral service, the increase of small and medium-sized energy resources, and the installation of multi-sensors or control devices. These cyber risks can cause critical problems within a national grid through even small errors. Therefore, in order to reduce these risks, it is necessary to establish a cyber security strategy and apply it from the developmental stage to the implementation stage. This thesis analyzes and recommends security strategy in order to resolve the security risks. By applying cyber security strategy to a smart grid, it will provide a stepping-stone to creating a safe and dependable smart grid.

  • Internet of Things(IoT) has become a key available technology for efficiently implementing device to device(D2D) services in various domains such as smart home, healthcare, smart city, agriculture, energy, logistics, and transportation. A lightweight publish/subscribe(Pub/Sub) messaging protocol not only establishes data dissemination pattern but also supports connectivity between IoT devices and their applications. Also, a Pub/Sub broker is deployed to facilitate data exchange among IoT devices. A scalable edge-based publish/subscribe (Pub/Sub) broker overlay networks support latency-sensitive IoT applications. In this paper, we design a hypercube grid quorum(HGQ) for distributed Pub/Sub systems based IoT applications. In designing HGQ, the network of hypercube structures suitable for the publish/subscribe model is built in the edge layer, and the proposed HGQ is designed by embedding a mesh overlay network in the hypercube. As their applications, we propose an HGQ-based mechansim for dissemination of the data of sensors or the message/event of IoT devices in IoT environments. The performance of HGQ is evaluated by analytical models. As the results, the latency and load balancing of applications based on the distributed Pub/Sub system using HGQ are improved.

  • Obsolescent control systems for power systems are evolving into intelligent systems and connecting with smart devices to give intelligence to the power systems. As networks of the control system are growing, vulnerability is also increasing. The communication network of distribution areas in the power system connects closely to vulnerable environments. Many cyber-attacks have been founded in the power system, and they could be more critical as the power system becomes more intelligent. From these environment, new communication network architecture and mitigation method against cyber-attacks are needed. Availability and Fault Tree analysis used to show that the proposed system enhances performance of current control systems.

  • The rapid growth of data has successfully promoted the development of modern information and communication technologies, which are used to process data generated by public urban departments and citizens in modern cities. In specific application areas where the ciphertext of messages generated by different users' needs to be transmitted, the concept of broadcast encryption is important. It can not only improve the transmission efficiency but also reduce the cost. However, the existing schemes cannot entirely ensure the privacy of receivers and dynamically adjust the user authorization. To mitigate these deficiencies, we propose an efficient, secure identity-based broadcast encryption scheme that achieves direct revocation and receiver anonymity, along with the analysis of smart grid solutions. Moreover, we constructed a security model to ensure wireless data transmission under cloud computing and internet of things integrated devices. The achieved results reveal that the proposed scheme is semantically secure in the random oracle model. The performance of the proposed scheme is evaluated through theoretical analysis and numerical experiments.

  • Big data processing is a broad term for processing data sets so large or complex that traditional data processing applications are inadequate. Widespread use of smart devices results in a huge impact on the way we process data. Many organizations are contemplating how to incorporate or integrate those devices into their enterprise data systems. We have proposed a way to process big data by way of integrating Raspberry Pi into a Hadoop cluster as a computational grid. We have then shown the efficiency through several experiments and the ease of scaling of the proposed system.

  • Water is a limited source that needs to be properly managed and distributed to the ever-growing population of the world. Rapid urbanization and development have increased the overall water demand of the world drastically. However, there is loss of billions of liters of water every year due to leakages in water distribution systems. Such water loss means significant financial loss for the utilities as well. World bank estimates a loss of $14 billion annually from wasted water. To address these issues and for the development of efficient and reliable leakage management techniques, high efforts have been made by the researchers and engineers. Over the past decade, various techniques and technologies have been developed for leakage management and leak detection. These include ideas such as pressure management in water distribution networks, use of Advanced Metering Infrastructure, use of machine learning algorithms, etc. For leakage detection, techniques such as acoustic technique, and in recent yeats transient test-based techniques have become popular. Smart Water Grid uses two-way real time network monitoring by utilizing sensors and devices in the water distribution system. Hence, valuable real time data of the water distribution network can be collected. Best results and outcomes may be produced by proper utilization of the collected data in unison with advanced detection and management techniques. Long term reduction in Non Revenue Water can be achieved by detecting, localizing and repairing leakages as quickly and as efficiently as possible. However, there are still numerous challenges to be met and future research works to be conducted in this field.

  • There is a high demand for energy efficiency improvement of factories that make up a large part of national electric energy. Therefore, research on smart FEMS technology for monitoring, analyzing and controlling energy consumption patterns is under way, but there is still a lack of research on detailed element technology for communication and control inside the factory. In this paper, we proposed OFDM VLC system based on MODBUS protocol for communication between gateways, sensors, and devices to implement smart FEMS in indoor factory environment. Assuming a conveyor belt load control, we validated the proposed system by simulating the inverter motor control and checking the performance.
