Since the term smart city was coined, theories and practices of smart cities have flourished. Regarding the theoretical aspect, user-driven innovation has been discussed in studies on the innovation ecosystems of smart cities. Smart cities have been built in various countries around the world in recent years, including in Japan, which has experienced the same global trends in smart cities since 2010. Four smart community projects run by the Agency for Natural Resources and Energy between 2010 and 2014 followed such trends. The present study addressed user-driven innovation using the quadruple helix model as an analytical framework for the four smart community projects, and the outcomes of the projects were evaluated. In conclusion, the smart community projects were evaluated as successful. However, it was revealed that these projects were not completely conducive to user-driven innovation.
In this paper, we propose a strategy to distribute the energy consumption over the network. The proposed strategy is based on geographic routing. We use a smart base station that maintains the residual energy and location information of sensor nodes and selects a head node and an anchor node using this information. A head node gathers and aggregates data from the sensor nodes in a target region that interests the user. An anchor node then transmits the data that was forwarded from the head node back to the smart base station. The smart base station extends network lifetime by selecting an optimal head node and an optimal anchor node. We simulate the proposed protocol and compare it with the LEACH protocol in terms of energy consumption, the number of dead nodes, and a distribution map of dead node locations.

Piezoelectric materials have become the most attractive functional materials for sensors and actuators in smart structures because they can directly convert mechanical energy to electrical energy and vise versa. They have excellent electromechanical coupling characteristics and excellent frequency response. In this article, the research activities and achievements on the applications of piezoelectric materials in smart structures in China, including vibration control, noise control, energy harvesting, structural health monitoring, and hysteresis control, are introduced. Special attention is given to the introduction of semi-active vibration suppression based on a synchronized switching technique and piezoelectric fibers with metal cores for health monitoring. Such mechanisms are relatively new and possess great potential for future applications in aerospace engineering.
The microgrid system is the combination of photovoltaic(PV) array, load, and battery energy storage system. The control strategies were defined as multi-modes of operation, including rest operation without use of battery, power charging, and power discharging, which enables grid connected mode or islanded mode. Photovoltaic power is a problem of the uniformity of power quality because the power generated from solar light is very sensitive to variation of insolation and duration of sunshine. As a solution to the above problem, energy storage system(ESS) is considered generally. There fore, in this study, we did basic research activities about optimization method of the amount of energy used, using a smart microgrid test-bed constructed in building. First, we analyzed the daily, monthly and period energy pattern amount of power energy used, and analyzed PV power generation level which is built on the roof. Utilizing building energy pattern analysis data, we was studied an efficient method of employing the ESS about building power consumption pattern and PV generation.
In this research, we consider a smart grid network of electricity with multiple consumers connected to a monopolistic provider. Each consumer can be informed the real time price changes through the smart meter and updates his consumption schedule to minimize the energy consumption expenditures by which the required power demand should be satisfied under the given real time pricing scheme. This real-time decision making problem has been recently studied through game-theoretic approach. The present paper contributes to the existing literature by incorporating storage appliance into the set of available household appliances which has somewhat distinctive functions compared to other types of appliances and would be regarded to play a significant role in energy consumption scheduling for the future smart grid. We propose a game-theoretic algorithm which could draw the optimal energy consumption scheduling for each household appliances including storage. Results on simulation data showed that the storage contributed to increase the efficiency of energy consumption pattern in the viewpoint of not only individual consumer but also whole system.
The work reported in this paper identifies the thermal-hydraulic phenomena that are expected to occur during a number of key transients in SMART(System-integrated Modular Advanced ReacTor) which is under development at KAERI. The result of this effort is based on the current design concept of SMART integral reactor. Although the design is still evolving, the preliminary phenomena Identification and Ranking Table(PIRT) has been developed based on the experts' knowledge and experience. The preliminary PIRT has been developed by consensus of KAERI expert panelists and AHP(Analytical Hierarchy Process). Preliminary PIRT developed in this paper is intended to be used to identify and integrate development areas of further experimental tests needed, thermal hydraulic models and correlations and code improvements for the safety analysis of the SMART.
With increasing interests in renewables, more consumers are installing an energy storage system (ESS) in their backyards, and thus, the ESS will play a critical role in the emerging smart grid. Due to mechanical properties, however its operational dynamics must be well understood before connecting the ESS to the smart grid (and eventually to an IT system). To this end, we investigate charging and discharging processes in detail. This paper, then, proposes methods for four type tests (state of charge test, conversion efficiency test, response time test, and ramp rate test) that can assess the dynamics of the ESS. The proposed methods can capture accurate delay values of mechanical processes in the ESS, and it is expected for those values to help design real-time communication systems in the smart grid involving the ESS.

The current electricity networks will undergo profound changes in the years to come to be able to meet the growing demand for electricity, while minimizing the costs of consumers and producers, etc. The electricity network of tomorrow or even the intelligent « Smart Grids » network will be the convergence of two networks: the electricity network and the telecommunications network. In this context falls our work which aims to study the impact of the integration of energy decentralization into the electricity network. In this sense, we have implemented a new smart grid model where several coexisting suppliers can exchange information with consumers in real time. In addition, a new approach to energy distribution optimization has been developed. The simulation results prove the effectiveness of this approach in improving energy exchange and minimizing consumer purchase costs and line losses.
