In this paper, we investigate array calibration algorithms to derive a further improved version for correcting antenna array errors and RF transceiver errors in CDMA smart antenna systems. The structure of a multi-channel RF transceiver with a digital calibration apparatus and its calibration techniques are presented, where we propose a new RF receiver calibration scheme to minimize interference of the calibration signal on the user signals. The calibration signal is injected into a multi-channel receiver through a calibration signal injector whose array response vector is controlled in order to have a low correlation with the antenna response vector of the receive signals. We suggest a model-based antenna array calibration to remove the antenna array errors including mutual coupling errors or to predict the element patterns from the array manifold measured at a small number of angles. Computer simulations and experiment results are shown to verify the calibration algorithms.
This paper describes the basic design and fabrication of smart skin antenna for phased array applications. The smart skin phased array antenna, of which radiation pattern can be electrically steerable without mechanical rotation, has to meet the both mechanical and electrical performance. The smart skin antenna is a honeycomb sandwich structure to enhance the mechanical performance such as strength, weight and so on. The example of smart skin antenna integrated with radome is designed with the resonant frequency of 5 GHz, circular polarization, 2 by 2 subarray, and a coaxial probe-fed excitation. In addition, the performance of raw microstrip patch antenna uncovered radome is investigate. The fabricated smart skin antenna shows a reasonable performance with gain of 12.2 dBi and frequency bandwidth of 6.4 %.

A compact and broadband $4{\times}1$ array antenna was developed for 3G smart antenna system testbed. The $4{\times}1$ uniform linear array antenna was designed to operate at 1.885 to 2.2GHz with a total bandwidth of 315MHz. The array elements were based on the novel broadband L-probe fed inverted hybrid E-H (LIEH) shaped microstrip patch, which offers 22% size reduction to the conventional rectangular microstrip patch antenna. For steering the antenna beam, a commercial variable attenuator (KAT1D04SA002), a variable phase shifter (KPH350SC00) with four units each, and the corporate 4-ways Wilkinson power divider which was fabricated in-house were integrated to form the beamforming feed network. The developed antenna has an impedance bandwidth of 17.32% ($VSWR{\leq}1.5$), 21.78% ($VSWR{\leq}2$) with respect to center frequency 2.02GHz and with an achievable gain of 11.9dBi. The design antenna offer a broadband, compact and mobile solution for a 3G smart antenna testbed to fully characterized the IMT-2000 radio specifications and system performances.

We propose a new scheme combining the compensation of HPA nonlinearity and the calibration of the path imperfections in the downlink OFDM smart antenna systems. We use a two term third-order polynomial (without second-order term) and the feedforward method for compensation and calibration to make each path of the antenna array have equal characteristics. Since the proposed scheme does not alter the base-band signal, it can be applied to the smart antenna system independently of the base-band signal processing section. The result of computer simulations shows that, with the addition of only one third-order term, the adverse nonlinear effects can be effectively compensated, and the those of linear imperfections can be calibrated as well.
In this paper, the performance of W-CDMA system with smart antenna is analyzed for angular spread in spatio-temporal wideband vector channel. We consider correlation between any two elements of antenna array, the angle spread of multipath, and structure of antenna array in this channel model. And each multipath is assumed as a reflective wave from only one direction. Several multipaths within one chip are distinguished into each one and the strongest signal is selected. As a result, the performance of the W-CDMA system with smart antenna in spatio-temporal wideband vector channel has been considerably improved in proportion to the increase of angular spread.
This paper proposes the interference cancellation improvement in smart antenna system by using Applebaum array covariance matrix adjustment. This technique adds the specific adjustable multipliers with both desired signal covariance matrix and interference signal covariance matrices in order to overcome some disadvantages and improve the interference cancellation efficiency of Applebaum array. It is based on the desired and undesired signal power or desired signal-to-interference-plus-thermal noise ratio (SINR). As the result from demonstration, the proposed technique can improve and increase the interference cancellation efficiency in smart antenna better than the conventional technique.

This study is a Ku-band array antenna for the manufacture of low-orbit satellite communication terminals, designed to have miniaturization, high gain, and wide beam width. The transmission of low-orbit satellite communication has a right-rotating circularly polarized wave, and the reception has a left-rotating circularly polarized wave. The 4×8 array antenna was separated for transmission and reception, and it was combined with the RF circuit part of the transmitter and receiver, and was terminated in the form of a waveguide for RF signal impedance matching in the form of a transition from the microstrip line to the waveguide. The 30° beam width of the receiver maximum gain of 19 dBi and the 29° beam width of the transmitter maximum gain of 18 dBi are shown. Through this antenna configuration, the system was configured to suit the low-orbit satellite transmission/reception characteristics.

It has been studied about smart antenna that track the beau according to the position of users, and improving the communication quality. In this paper, we designed the smart antenna algorithm for realtimeg and implemented that using CPLD. The algorithm structure has systolic array compatible with adaptive filters. The performances of the propose algorithm were evaluated via computer simulation. The used software was MAX+plus II which is made by Altera.
