  • The demands for longer span and reduction of story height have greatly increased as building structures become much larger and higher in recent years. Although the development of flexural members for reducing story height or making long span has been studied by many researchers and engineers, there is still a lack of efficient systems that meet these two demands simultaneously. This study aimed at developing a new composite beam system suitable for long span and reduction of story height, and proposed a prestressed composite beam with corrugated web. It has great resistance against non-symmetric construction load due to its strong out-of-plane shear strength with relatively small member height as well as good constructability and economic efficiency by removing/minimizing form work. The corrugated webs also make accordion effect introducing larger effective prestressing force to top and bottom flanges, which causes larger upward camber reducing the member deflection. Five full-scale specimens with key test parameters, which are web sectional shapes and number of drape points, were tested to understand their flexural behavior and to verify the performance of the proposed method. The experimental test results showed that the proposed prestressed composite beam had greater flexural strength and stiffness than the ordinary non-prestressed composite beam.

  • This study applied satellite radar imagery to identify flooded areas and examined post-flooding conditions using time-series satellite radar imagery for the development of flood damage mitigation strategies. Using time-series satellite radar images, this study constructed a map delineating areas vulnerable to frequent flood damage. The extracted flooded areas were combined with reference land use maps to examine flood damage by land use type. Major landuse types with severe flood damage were agricultural and forested areas. The analysis of the damage conditions, in terms of land use, served as the basis for developing flood damage mitigation policies, in conjunction with land use planning. The policies for flood damage mitigation can be summarized as land use regulations, land use planning, and flood damage mapping. A preventive measure to minimize flood damage of properties, which regulates developing areas with high flooding potential, is highly recommended. Although this study suggested a number of policies for flood damage mitigation, they represent only a small number of possible policies useful for mitigating flood damage and other environmental problems. Based upon the results of this study, it may be concluded that satellite radar imagery has great potential in providing basic data for large-scale environmental problems such as flooding and oil spills. Nevertheless, further examinations should be conducted and the application of satellite radar imagery should be used to examine other environmental problems.

  • To investigate the stability problem of irrigation-drainage channel excavation slope on soft ground, analyzed the behavior of the soft ground with excavation slope by the limit equilibrium method and the finite element method, and compared with field tests. The results of this study were summarized as follows; 1. When rapid drawdown the water level, the crack was occurred by the effect of the excess pore water pressure, and the pore water pressure was decreased slowly. 2. As the width of excavation was larger, the crack width was larger. And, excavated depth was deeper, the progressive failure was appeared. 3. When the soft ground excavation was small-scale, the minimum safety factor was more effected by cohesion(1.0, 1.5, 2.0, 2.5, 3.0) than excavated slope inclination(1:l, 1:1.5, 1:2). 4. As excavation was progressed, the settlement occurred on the top-slope due to plastic domain, and heaving was occurred at the bottom of excavation. 5. The maximum shear stress was appeared greatly as the base part of slope went down. Because of the increase of the maximum shear stress, tension area occurred and local failure possibility was increased. 6. As the excavation depth was increased, the maximum shear strain was appeared greatly at the base of slope and distribution pattern was concentrated beneath the middle of slope.

  • All the major ports around the world as well as those in Korea have been exploring their own strategies to survive rapidly changing marine transport environment worldwide. In particular, Busan New Port under development still fails to meet expected logistical traffic, although it operates 6 berths. That is why it is necessary to point out current challenges in logistical strategy of Busan New Port for fully dealing with logistical traffic. Therefore, this study can propose the following ways to facilitate logistical traffic of Busan New Port. First, it is necessary to apply equal tariff to incentives given to shipping agent under the associations between existing harbors and Busan New Port. Second, it is required to increase governmental subsidy for truck freight transport. Third, it is demanded to seek possible ways to transport export and import freight and thereby create independent logistical traffic. Fourth, it is necessary to contact shipping agents residing in new ports and establish a logistical program for shipping freights via Europe, Middle East and Russia as well as those by way of North America, Japan, Korea and China, ultimately making sustainable marketing strategy to create a series of continuous transshipment freight, not temporary one. Finally, it is advisable to operate networked logistical programs with small- or medium-sized overseas shipping agents in business association with large-scale overseas shipping agents.

  • This study was conducted to understand the settlement process of Ascotis selenaria larvae into citrus orchards with respect to oviposition site and analysis of the spatial distribution pattern of the larvae. A. selenaria eggs were not found on citrus trees in field and green house, but not on citrus trees in the field. A. selenaria larvae showed a significant clump distribution in the greenhouse. In the open citrus field, the index of dispersion was around 1.0 in most cases, with a weak clumping degree. However, the d-statistic was between -1.96 and 1.96, indicating a statistically significant random distribution. In addition, the Green's index (a clumping index) was very low in all cases, even though the clump distribution was accepted. for most samples, the probability distribution of larval frequency in the field satisfied the probability distribution functions of Poisson (random pattern) and the negative binomial (clump pattern) distribution. In addition, the temporal distribution of the larvae in the open field showed a pattern which was formed by colonizers from outside oviposition sites. Further, the difference in larval spatial distribution between field and greenhouse orchards was discussed.

  • An Experimental study was conducted on $CO_{2}$ recycle combustion heating system using pure oxygen instead of conventional air as an oxidant, which is thereby producing a flue gas of mostly $CO_{2}$ and water vapor($H_{2}O$ and water vapor($H_{2}O$) and resulting in higher $CO_{2}$ concentration. The advantages of the system are not only the ability to control high temperatures characteristic of oxygen combustion with recycling $CO_{2}$ but also the possibility to reduce NOx emission in the flue gas. A small scale industrial reheating furnace simulator and specially designed variable flame burner were used to characterize the $CO_{2}$ recycle oxy-fuel combustion, such as the variations of furnace pressure, temperature and composition in the flue gas during recycle. It was found that $CO_{2}$ concentration in the flue gas was about 80% without $CO_{2}$recycle. The furnace temperature and pressure and pressure were decreased due to recycle and the NOx emission was also reduced to maintain under 100ppm.

  • It is considered necessary to renewal a considerable number of water supply facilities in Korea because they began to be intensively buried in the period of rapid economic growth. Accordingly, local water providers are required to take measures against this situation, but they have currently been caught in a vicious circle of the lack of budget spent in renewing water supply facilities because county-based small-scale local water supply cannot afford to cover annual expenditures with their revenues from water rates. Therefore, this study developed an optimal renewal planning model capable of achieving a balance of financial revenue and expenditure in local water supply using nonlinear programming and furthermore of minimizing the total cost incurred during the analysis. To this end, this study selected the water supply area located in County Y as a research area to build the financial revenue and expenditure and used Solver function provided by Microsoft Excel to use nonlinear programming. As a result, this study developed an optimal renewal planning model minimizing incurred costs in consideration of 6 items in the financial revenue and expenditure. The optimal renewal plan was modeled according to the available annual budget. As a result, this study proposed SICD, a scenario to minimize total costs from the perspective of water suppliers, and SITS, a scenario to minimize the increase in water rates from the perspective of consumers. It can be said that the method proposed in this study is the core of the optimal financial and renewal plans as a final stage of asset management for water supply facilities. Therefore, it is considered possible for local water providers to use the method proposed in this study according to circumstances for the asset management of water supply facilities.

  • The purpose of the study is to develop an index for basic management diagnosis of domestic industrial crafts companies. After the verification processes aimed at experts working in industrial crafts companies, the index of basic management diagnosis that has been researched and developed so far was turned out to be inappropriate to investigate the management of industrial crafts companies, in which the organized management system is not equipped due to their small-scale business environment. It is because the current index of management diagnosis was designed for diagnosis from the functional perspective. Therefore, in this study, the new index of management diagnosis was developed in order to diagnose the management of industrial crafts companies from the process perspective. This index is divided into three elements of Plan, Do, and See, which represents the management process cycle with focus on activities of industrial crafts companies. In addition, through literature study and Focus Group Interview (FGI) based on this index, detailed aspects and items of diagnosis, and checklists were emerged. This index of management is designed for the basic management diagnosis of industrial crafts, and it is possible to figure out management problems from diverse perspectives. For further research, the effectiveness of the index of management should be verified through diagnosing the management of industrial crafts companies and grasping management problems from varied perspectives.

  • In the tele-medical system, the broadband network for multimedia telecommunication and the multimedia terminal equipment for the remote access of the tele-medical information are essential. Especially, the tele-medical terminal equipment should provide the multimedia GUI environment in order to support the similar medical process by the tele-medical system. In this paper, we present a multimedia GUI (Graphic User Interface) for a Multimedia Tele-Medical System (TeleMedi_GUI) based on ATM/B-ISDN. In the tele-medical system, one workstation is used for the multimedia data server that is supporting multiple client terminals that are connected by the ATM network. The client terminals are based on Multimedia Personal Computers, and provide the remote access environment of the tele-medical database. We also developed the remote access protocols among the clients and the server to access multimedia medical information of the multimedia server. With using the TeleMedi_GUI, the doctors can examine and treat patients efficiently, using image data like X-ray/CT and voice data such as the S-ray diagnosis. The result of this paper can be applied to the following areas: 1) the implementation of the advanced medical service system interconnecting the small-scale health center and general hospitals, 2) the development of a fully computerized medical information system within the hospital.
