  • Total primary production resulting from the photosynthetic process can be defined as the amount of organic matter produced in a given period of time. It is proportional to the chlorophyll-a (chl-a) values in the surface layer of the ocean. The MODIS board on Aqua satellite measures visible and infrared radiation in 36 wavebands, providing simultaneous images of chl-a concentration and sea surface temperature (SST) in the upper layer of the sea. The seasonal distribution of chl-a concentration during one year from April 2005 to March 2006 was examined. Light has a role of starting the seasonal cycle. The Kuroshio Current in this area induces many oceanographical features affecting to the change of seasonal control. The chl-a concentration is also seasonal, which is low in summer and high in winter. In summer, the meandering of Kuroshio Current induces strong eddies and increases the chl-a concentration. In autumn, the delayed small autumn bloom occurred until last December due to the Kuroshio Current. When the Kuroshio axis moves far from the coast, the coastal water dominates and increases the concentration even in the winter. The spring bloom starts early at the beginning of March and decreases during the spring.

  • In general, stereo images are widely used to remote sensing or photogrametric applications for the purpose of image understanding and feature extraction or cognition. However, the most cases of these stereo-based application deal with 2-D satellite images or the airborne photos so that its main targets are generation of small-scaled or large-scaled DEM(Digital Elevation Model) or DSM(Digital Surface Model), in the 2.5-D. Contrast to these previous approaches, the scope of this study is to investigate 3-D stereo processing and visualization of true geo-referenced 3-D features based on anaglyph technique, and the aim is at the prototype development for stereo visualization system of complex typed 3-D GIS features. As for complex typed 3-D features, the various kinds of urban landscape components are taken into account with their geometric characteristics and attributes. The main functions in this prototype are composed of 3-D feature authoring and modeling along with database schema, stereo matching, and volumetric visualization. Using these functions, several technical aspects for migration into actual 3-D GIS application are provided with experiment results. It is concluded that this result will contribute to more specialized and realistic applications by linking 3-D graphics with geo-spatial information.

  • The optics of Space telescope is one of the major parts of space mission used for imaging observation of astronomical targets and the Earth. These kinds of space mission have a bulky and complex opto-mechanics with a long optical tube, but there are attempts have been made to observe a target with a small satellite in many ways. In this paper, we describe an optical design of a reflecting telescope for use in a CubeSat mission. For this design, we adopt the off-axis segmented method of astronomical observation techniques based on the Ritchey-Chr$\acute{e}$tien type telescope. The primary mirror shape is a rectangle with dimensions of $8cm{\times}8cm$, and a secondary mirror has dimensions of $2.4cm{\times}4.1cm$. The focal ratio is 3 which can obtain a $0.3{\times}0.2$ degree diagonal angle in a $1280{\times}800$ CMOS color image sensor with a pixel size of $3{\mu}m{\times}3{\mu}m$. This optical design can capture a ${\sim}4km{\times}{\sim}2.3km$ area of the earth's surface at 700 km altitude operation. Based on this conceptual design, we will keep trying to study more for astronomical observation with Attitude control system.

  • On 2016 April $13^{th}$ the Jovian satellite Ganymede occulted a $7^{th}$ magnitude star. The predicted occultation track (occultation shadow) crossed the Northern Pacific Ocean, Japan, and South Korea. Hence, it was a very favorable event due to the star brightness in order to be accessible for small-aperture telescopes as well. While no other similar event is expected for the next 10 years, only two occultation events are reported in the literature in the past, from Earth in 1972 and from Voyager, in large disagreement in respect to the atmospheric detection. However, evidence of an exosphere around Ganymede was inferred through H Lyman alpha emission detected by Galileo UVS, through HST/GHRS detection of far-UV atomic O airglow emissions, signature of dissociated molecular oxygen. We organized a short-notice international coordinated occultation monitoring network with the aim to search for a signature of Ganymede's exosphere in the occultation light-curve by using facilities on Mauna Kea (NASA-IRTF) and Sobaeksan Optical Astronomy Observatory (SOAO) in South Korea.

  • In this study, Real Time Kinematic GPS(RTK GPS) was conducted twice at the same site in two different seasons, respectively to check the possibility of it as the mapping tool, and how the factor affecting the accuracy of it. As a result, most parts of a small garden except f3r the worst environments surrounded with lots of tree canopy and several buildings were mapped using RTK GPS even in spring, full of a green foliage and winter as well. However, the mapping accuracy and the availability of RTK GPS were not so high. The study showed that it is recommended in RTK GPS mapping to utilize Total Station, etc. in the worst urban environments unable to track the satellite signals with ease.

  • Exact estimation of evapotranspiration is important to understand natural phenomena and social issues associated with the climate such as irrigation scheme, reservoir water management, and many other meteorological and climatological problems. To overcome limits of point measurement of evapotranspiration, several models have been developed through the techniques of remote sensing and Geographical Information System. SEBAL model is one of them, based on the energy balance equation, and it has a lot of advantages such as that it requires relatively small empirical relations. In this study, the SEBAL model has been calibrated and validated in Geumgang upper basin, Bochung-stream basin, Korea with 5 satellite images Landsat 5 TM. In validation, the results of SEBAL model were compared with those by Merton method. After validation, the spatial and temporal characteristics of the distribution of evapotranspiration within the basin were analyzed with 3 factors, the aspect of slope, the angle of slope, and the land cover.

  • Hongdo and Huksando belong to the Dadohae national park parks in Korea and are famous sightseeing spots in Shinahn-gun. One of the keystone species in this area is otter (Lutra lutra). We accomplished field works for finding its present habitat and condition analyses for the potential habitat in the area via spatial analyses with digital elevation model and satellite imagery. Isolated condition with coastal cliffs was one of the superior conditions over habitat in the main land, but the road kills of small animals were also observed. Three underground eco-corridors were suggested for the protection of otter habitat in the Shinahn-gun area. Regional development strategies of Shinahn-gun should be focused on the protection of safe and pristine habitat for otter population.

  • This study was conducted to establish inventory and propose conservation strategy of 'village wetlands' in Cheonan. As results, the village wetlands are defined as such places as palustrine wetland, village embankment, agricultural reservoir or small reservoirs located in or near the village and related to everyday life or farming. Firstly 791 provisional village wetlands were identified in Cheonan by using Arc-GIS 10.1, then 104 wetlands were defined as village wetlands and listed the inventory of Cheonan Village Wetlands after being validated through their area (greater than $1,000m^2$), satellite images, Korea Land Information System, land use map, land coverage map and field survey. Finally the 49 wetlands were selected for detailed surveying, and function assessment. As the result of the wetland function assessments, 11 wetlands were found to have 'high' wetland function (conservation) 30 wetlands were 'average' (enhancement) and 8 wetlands were 'low' (restoration or enhancement). Enhancing biodiversity and ecosystem services through ecological management of wetlands in Cheonan and connecting with an ecological network were proposed.

  • Dramatic price increases of fossil fuels and the economic development of emerging nations accelerates the transformation of forest lands into monocultures, e.g. for biofuel production. On this account, cost efficient methods to enable the monitoring of land resources has become a vital ambition. The application of remote sensing techniques has become an integral part of forest attribute estimation and mapping. The aim of this study was to evaluate the potentials of the kNN method by combining terrestrial with remotely sensed data for the development of a pixel-based monitoring system for the small scaled mosaic of different land use types of the off-reserve forests of the Goaso forest district in Ghana, West Africa. For this reason, occurrence and distribution of land use types like cocoa and non-timber forest resources, such as bamboo and raphia palms, were estimated, applying the kNN method to ASTER satellite data. Averaged overall accuracies, ranging from 79% for plantain, to 83% for oil palms, were found for single-attribute classifications, whereas a multi-attribute approach showed overall accuracies of up to 70%. Values of k between 3 and 6 seem appropriate for mapping bamboo. Optimisation of spectral bands improves results considerably.
