A small-sized turbocharger is generally used in downsizing engine for various vehicles. When a centrifugal compressor, which is one of the crucial units of the turbocharger, is downsized, the compressor has much more possibilities of being damaged because of its high rotating speed, causing insecure structural soundness. Thus, it is of essential to study on the improvement of the structural soundness of a small-sized turbocharger. In this study, numerical analysis on the various blade geometries and mass flow rate of the compressor was performed using the commercial software ANSYS CFX. In addition, the evaluation on the structural soundness of a compressor impeller for respective cases was conducted using ANSYS Mechanical. As a result, it was shown that the compressor had higher efficiency with increasingly secured structural soundness.
Turbocharger steels were manufactured by the powder metallurgical and casting method. They consisted primarily of a large amount of ${\gamma}$-Fe, a small amount of ${\alpha}$-Fe, and fine $Nb_6C_5$ precipitates. The casting method was better than the powder metallurgical method, because a sound matrix with little oxides were obtained. When turbocharger steels were oxidized at $900^{\circ}C$ for 50 h, $Mn_2VO_4$ and (Mn,Si)-oxides were formed along grain boundaries, while $Mn_2O_3$ and $CrMn_2O_4$ were formed intragranularly. Fe, Nb, and Ni were depleted in the oxide scale.

Turbocharger has a main purpose on recycling of the exhaust gas from the engine cylinder. On the basis of the facility characteristics, the turbocharger supported on floating ring bearings has some problems such as the large volume, oil supplement for lubrication and high power loss due to high operating torque. The air foil bearing has been studied as the bearing element to be able to alternate the floating ring bearing without the problems of the floating ring bearing. In this study, the air foil bearing has 2 parts; journal and thrust bearings, and the test facility consists of the engine, exhaust and intake parts. In addiction, the specification of the turbocharger follows a small turbocharger for SUV engine. The engine speed is varied from 750 (idle rpm) to 2,500 rpm and then, the rotating speed of the turbocharger rotor is accelerated from 0 to 100,000 rpm. From those experiments, the comparison between the performances of the air foil bearing and floating ring bearing is conducted and the results show that the air foil bearing has less power loss, maximum 770 watt, than the floating ring bearing, maximum 5,110 watt. This result verifies that the air foil bearing is more efficient and able to output more power under the same condition of the input power.
The small turbocharger for the automotive application is designed to operate up to 200,000 rpm to increase system efficiency. Because of high rotation speed of turbocharger, floating ring bearing are widely adopted due to its low friction loss and high rotordynamic stability. This paper presents a linear and nonlinear analysis model for a turbocharger rotor supported by a semi-floating ring bearing. The rotordynamic model for the turbocharger rotor was constructed based on the finite element method and fluid film forces were calculated based on the infinitely short bearing assumption. In linear analysis, we considered fluid film force as stiffness and damping element and in nonlinear analysis, the fluid film force was calculated by solving the time dependent Reynolds equation. We verified the developed theoretical model by comparing to modal test results of test rotors. The analysis results show that there are two unstable modes, which are conical and cylindrical modes. These unstable modes appear as sub-synchronous vibrations in nonlinear analysis. In nonlinear analysis, frequency jump phenomenon demonstrated when vibration mode is changed from conical mode to cylindrical one. This jump phenomenon was also demonstrated in the test. However, the natural frequency measured in the test differs from those obtained using nonlinear analysis.

The turbocharger is an essential component to realize the engine down-sizing. The moment of inertia of turbocharger rotor is an important parameter with respect to acceleration performance of the vehicle. It can be calculated from the CAD software based the geometry data and the material properties. But the accurate value of the inertia of turbocharger rotor must be measured through the experimental method. In this study, the measurement of moment of inertia of turbocharger rotor for 2.0 L spark-ignition engine was carried out. First, an experimental equipment using a trifilar method was designed and fabricated. Some optical devices, that is, photo sensor, counter, convex lens, etc, were used to increase the accuracy of the measurement. Second, error sensitivity for the equipment was analyzed. The error of period time and the radius can give big affects to the accuracy of the moment of inertia. When the amount of error of these two were each 1.0 %, maximum error of the moment of inertia was under 3.0 %. Third, the calibration for the equipment was performed using a calibration rotor which has similar shape to turbine rotor but simple. Calculated value from CAD software and measured one for the calibration rotor were compared. The total error of the equipment and the measurement is about 1.3 %. This result shows that the equipment can give the good result with resonable accuracy. Finally the moment of inertia of the turbine rotor and compressor wheel were measured. The coefficient of variations, the ratio of standard deviation to mean value, were reasonably small at 0.57 % and 0.73 % respectively. Therefore this equipment is suitable for the measurement of the moment of inertia of the turbine rotor and compressor wheel.
In this paper, the effect of oil conditions in rotor dynamic behaviors of a FFRB (Fully-Floating Ring Bearing) is investigated. Through the characteristic of a FFRB has two films, it has several advantages such as less friction loss and better stability over a wide speed range. However, it is difficult to supply a oil to the inner film. Thus, turbocharger makers have been paid significant attention to the lubrication of a FFRB because of its importance. This work focuses on the influence of oil inlet pressure and temperature. The methodologies of computational simulation and experimental test were used to estimate the rotor dynamic behaviors. In experimental test, the single-scroll turbocharger for the 1.4L diesel engine was used. The results show that the oil inlet pressure and temperature will place considerable influence on the rotor response. Oil conditions affect RSR (Ring Speed Ratio) which is cause of sub-synchronous vibrations, which also cause of oil whirling and whip even a critical speed. At higher speed range, the phenomenon of self-excited vibrations which is cause of instability of fluid whirl is investigated through the orbit shapes that consist of small orbit and large amplitude orbit. It is shown that some performance of a FFRB can be controlled by the conditions of oil supply. Finally, it was revealed that the oil induced operating conditions will strongly affect the turbocharger rotor dynamics behaviors.
In order to compliant the stringent exhaust emission regulations, higher fuel efficiency and cleaner exhaust gas in combustion engines have been required. To improve combustion efficiency, an exhaust gas temperature is increasing, therefore higher temperature resistance is required for components in exhaust system, especially turbine wheel in turbocharger. IN100 looks quite attractive candidate as it has high temperature properties with low density, however it has low castability due to poor ductility at high temperature. In this study, the balance of Al and Ti composition was optimized from the base alloy IN100 to improve the high temperature ductility by expanding the γ single phase region below the solidification temperature, while obtaining the high temperature strength by maintaining the volume fraction of γ' phase equivalent to IN100 around 1000℃. Furthermore, the high temperature creep rupture life increased by adding a small amount of Ta. The alloy developed in this study has high castability, low density and high specific strength at high temperature.

Measurements of the moment of inertia of a small turbocharger rotor were studied. A measuring device was manufactured using the trifilar method and the moment of inertia of the calibration rotor was measured to verify the device. The coefficient of variation was 0.43% and the error was 0.75%. The results showed that the device is suitable for measuring the moment of inertia of a turbocharger rotor. Next, the moment of inertia for two turbine rotors and compressor wheels was measured. Those for the turbine rotors showed precise and accurate results in that the coefficients were under 1.0% and the errors were under 3.0%. On the other hand, those for the compressor wheel were precise but inaccurate in that the coefficients were under 1.0% and the errors were over 24.4%. Therefore an indirect method for the compressor wheel was suggested. The results showed that the coefficients were under 1.2% and the errors were under 7.88%.

In this study linear and nonlinear dynamic stability characteristics of a medium-size high-speed turbocharger, whose rotor is supported by two 3-lobe journal bearings, are analyzed to evaluate and identify the effects of its bearing design variables. The rotor has the rated speed of 40,500 rpm and maximum continuous speed of 45,000 rpm. At first, utilizing the linear stability analysis method, bearing designs of yielding stable or unstable LogDecs as small as possible are searched by manipulating with machined bearing clearances and preloads. As next, utilizing the nonlinear analysis method, limit cycles of the rotor responses at the rated and maximum continuous speeds are simulated to check their acceptances. Results have shown that for the turbocharger rotor-bearing system considered, the 3-lobe journal bearing design with a smaller machined clearance and a larger preload are preferred for the stable rotor responses. More importantly, since there exists a good correlation between the linear and nonlinear stability analysis results, it is concluded that firstly the linear stability analysis method may be applied to screen quickly the ranges of bearing designs for stable or least unstable solutions and then, lastly the nonlinear stability analysis method may be deployed to check an absolute motion stability in terms of the limit cycle.

The modal characteristics of a compressor wheel of an automotive turbocharger have been investigated using an experimental method based on an acoustic frequency response function, p/f(${\omega}$), where p is sound pressure radiated from a structure, and f is impact force. First, a well-defined annular disc with narrow radial slots was examined to check whether the vibro-acoustic test could precisely determine natural quencies and vibration modes of structures showing that the vibro-acoustic test proposed in this paper was comparable to the conventional modal test with an accelerometer and the numerical analysis. The conventional method has been found to be inappropriate for compressor wheel because of additional mass due to the accelerometer and additional damping from the accelerometer cable alter the dynamic responses of the wheel blades. odal characteristics of the wheel have been defined using vibro-acoustic test and verified with the results from another conventional method using a laser vibrometer. Natural quencies and mode shapes of a turbocharger wheel, which can't be precisely obtained with onventional method, could be defined accurately without the additional effects from sensor and cable. Proposed method can be applied to small structures where conventional sensors and cables could generate troubles.
