This study was carried out to examine the salting and desalting of small casings from hog and to determine the shelf-life during cold storage. The concentration of salt in the casings equilibrated with that of the added salt after 1 day for 10%, after 2 days for 20% after 7 days for 40% salting level. During desalting at 15 and $30^{\circ}C$, residual salt concentrations in the casings decreased to less than 1% after 1 hour for 10% salt, after 12 hours for 20% salt and after 24 hours for 40% salt. The total colony count of the freshly prepared casing was about log10 4.2. The initial microflora of the prepared casings was dominated by lactic acid bacteria. The higher the salting level, the greater the microbial growth was suppressed during 6 months of storage at refrigerator temperature ($4^{\circ}C$). A salt content of 20% is satisfactory if the casings are being stored for less than 1 month before being used.
This experiment was conducted to evaluate the effects of single or multi-particle size limestone on the egg shell quality, egg production, egg quality and feed intake in laying hens. A total of 280 laying hens (ISA brown) were used in this 10-wk trial. Laying hens were randomly assigned to 4 treatments with 14 replications per treatment and 5 adjacent cages as a replication (hens were caged individually). The experimental treatments were: i) L, basal diet+10% large particle limestone; ii) LS1, basal diet+8% large particle limestone+2% small particle limestone; iii) LS2, basal diet+6% large particle limestone+4% small particle limestone; iv) S, basal diet+10% small particle limestone. The egg production was unaffected by dietary treatments. The egg weight in S treatment was lighter than other treatments (p<0.05). The egg specific gravity in S treatment was lower than other treatments (p<0.05). The eggshell strength and eggshell thickness in S treatment were decreased when compared with other dietary treatments (p<0.05). The laying hens in LS1 and LS2 treatment had a higher average feed intake than the other two treatments (p<0.05). Collectively, the dietary multi-particle size limestone supplementation could be as efficient as large particle size limestone.
After pubertal, cohort of small antral follicles enters to gonadotrophin-sensitive development, called recruited follicles. This study was aimed to identify candidate genes in follicular cyclic recruitment via analysis of protein-protein interaction (PPI) network. Differentially expressed genes (DEGs) in ovine granulosa cells of small antral follicles between follicular and luteal phases were accumulated among gene/protein symbols of the Ensembl annotation. Following directed graphs, PTPN6 and FYN have the highest indegree and outdegree, respectively. Since, these hubs being up-regulated in ovine granulosa cells of small antral follicles during the follicular phase, it represents an accumulation of blood immune cells in follicular phase in comparison with luteal phase. By contrast, the up-regulated hubs in the luteal phase including CDK1, INSRR and TOP2A which stimulated DNA replication and proliferation of granulosa cells, they known as candidate genes of the cyclic recruitment.
Alimentary lymphoma accounts for approximately 5% of neoplasm and diffuse lesion is more common than solitary nodular form in dogs. An eleven year-old male Yorkshire terrier was examined because of nonspecific gastrointestinal symptoms such as anorexia and vomiting for 10 days. An abdominal mass was palpated, which was originated from small intestinal wall in abdominal ultrasonography. Small intestine was obstructed by hypoechoic mass and lost normal layering and measured 24.5m. After fine-needle aspiration, septic peritonitis due to intestinal rupture occurred and emergency surgery was performed. Solitary mass was found in small intestine and diagnosed as alimentary lymphoma through histopathologic examination. Conclusively, abdominal ultrasonouaphy could verify the thickened bowel, loss of wall layering and decrease of motility and percutaneous ultrasound-guided fine-needle aspiration is considered as useful diagnostic technique, especially in nodular form of alimentary lymphoma.
A 10-year-old intact female Miniature Schnauzer dog was referred with the primary complaint of persistent anorexia, remittent fever, vomiting and abdominal pain. Hemogram suggested a chronic inflammatory disease. Serum biochemistry showed moderate hepatobiliary cellular damage with severe cholestasis. Abdominal radiography and ultrasonography revealed hepatomegaly, choleliths and sludges in gall bladder and small stones in urinary bladder. Based on diagnostic findings, the case was diagnosed as cholelithiasis complicated with biliary sludge and urolithiais. Using cholecystectomy and cystectomy, choleliths and uroliths were removed from gall bladder and urinary bladder, respectively. The clinical condition was dramatically improved after surgery.

We developed an x-ray cone-beam micro computed tomography (micro-CT) system for small-animal imaging. The micro-CT system consists of a 2-D flat-panel x-ray detector with a field-of-view (FOV) of 120${\times}$120 mm2, a micro-focus x-ray source, a scan controller and a parallel image reconstruction system. Imaging performances of the micro-CT system have been evaluated in terms of contrast and spatial resolution. The minimum resolvable contrast has been found to be less than 36 CT numbers at the dose of 95 mGy and the spatial resolution about 14 lp/mm. As small animal imaging results, we present high resolution 3-D images of rat organs including a femur, a heart and vessels. We expected that the developed micro-CT system can be greatly used in biomedical studies using small animals.
A major obstacles to evaluation of newly-developed treatment strategy for human lung cancer has been the lack of appropriate experimental animal models. We describe a new experimental model of orthotopically-developed non-small cell lung cancer in nude rat, involving inoculation of tumor cell suspension by thoracotomy. Over 40 direct implantation to the periphery of the lung has been performed to date, each requiring less than'1 hour for completion. This model has been used to perform a series of experiments to investigate whether the rat lung and surrounding structures trapped tumor cells with 2 different non-small cell lung cancer cell lines(NCI-H46O and NCI-H1299). Every animal showed development of tumor masses, which were loculated at the periphery of the lung karenchyma and identified also by radiography. After 3 weetu of the inoculation, tumor develop meat at the mediastinal strutures were identified. The life expectancies of the victims were different between the cell lines, but were approximately 5 weeks when NCI-H46O cell line was used. This new orthotopic lung cancer model may be facilitate future studies of the new therapeutics of localized non-small cell lung cancer .
The process of drug discovery and development requires substantial resources and time. The drug industry has tried to reduce costs by conducting appropriate animal studies together with molecular biological and genetic analyses. Basic science research has been limited to in vitro studies of cellular processes and ex vivo tissue examination using suitable animal models of disease. However, in the past two decades new technologies have been developed that permit the imaging of live animals using radiotracer emission, X-rays, magnetic resonance signals, fluorescence, and bioluminescence. The main objective of this review is to provide an overview of small animal molecular imaging, with a focus on nuclear imaging (single photon emission computed tomography and positron emission tomography). These technologies permit visualization of toxicodynamics as well as toxicity to specific organs by directly monitoring drug accumulation and assessing physiological and/or molecular alterations. Nuclear imaging technology has great potential for improving the efficiency of the drug development process.
A novel method to implement a birdcage-type receiving coil sensor for use in a magnetic resonance imaging(MRI) system has been demonstrated employing a flexible printed circuit board (FPCB) fabrication technique. Unlike the conventional methods, the two-dimensional shape of the coil sensor is first implemented as a FPCB and then it is attached to the surface of a cylindrical supporting structure to implement the three-dimensional birdcage-type coil sensor. The proposed method is very effective to implement object-specific MRI coil sensors especially for small animal measurements in research and preclinical applications since the existing well-developed FPCB-based techniques can easily meet the requirements on accuracies and costs during coil implement process. The performances of the coil sensor verified through $^1H$ 1.5T MRI measurements for small animals and it showed excellent characteristics by providing a high spatial precision and a high signal-to-noise ratio.
Healing of 48 cases of radial fractures in small breed dogs treated with acrylic pin external fixation was evaluated retrospectively to investigate the factors affecting the healing of radial fractures. The mean age of the subjects was 15.02 months, the mean body weight was 3.48 kg, and the mean maximum length of the radius (MLR) was 90.77 mm. External skeletal fixation frames type 1a, 2a, and 3 were used; among them type 2a was used most frequently (75%). The mean time to clinical union (TCU) was 67.17 days, and the success rate was 95.8%. Age, bodyweight, MLR, and occurrence of complications increased TCU significantly. Among complications, pin loosening, swelling of the operated forelimb tissue for more than 2 weeks, and coexistence of two or more complications increased TCU significantly (p < 0.05). There was no relationship between location of the fracture and TCU. The results of this study may be useful to predict the prognosis of radial fractures in small dogs.
